Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris has slammed comments by U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson suggesting his Republican party may repeal the U.S. CHIPS Act if they win a legislative majority in Tuesday's election. The law allows for US$6.6 billion in direct funding for a semiconductor plant in Arizona state by Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC.

00:14We've talked repeatedly about their intention to get rid of the Affordable Care Act, now
00:18to get rid of the CHIPS Act.
00:20It is my plan and intention to continue to invest in American manufacturing and doing
00:26the work of investing in American industries, including our industries of the future.
00:31That is the way we are going to win the competition with China for the 21st century, and that
00:35is the kind of leadership that America deserves in their president.
00:40Harris was responding to Speaker Mike Johnson's statement that his Republican Party would
00:45likely try to repeal the law if they win a legislative majority in this week's election.
00:50Johnson has since walked back those comments, saying that a repeal is not on the agenda.
00:55The 2022 law authorized massive funding to boost research and manufacture of semiconductors
00:59inside the United States.
01:01That includes up to $6.6 billion in direct funding for a new plant in the state of Arizona
01:07by Taiwanese chip giant TSMC.
01:09The U.S. presidential and congressional elections will be held November 5th.
