Abrsm 2025 & 2026
Grade 3 Piano Exam
Category A 1
Song Title / Song Piece Allegro Moderato
Composer Louis Köhler
ecommended tempo for this piece is 126 bpm, which is a fairly moderate tempo - not too fast, nor too slow. A generally steady tempo throughout is needed, but little touches of rubato (looseness of time) could work well, as long as not overdone.
Although mostly to be played legato, but there are quite a few moments when staccato is needed, so just keep an eye out for those details. Contrasting dynamic markings can be found between the right-hand (p) and left-hand (mf) parts from bars 8 to 11. The melody is being played in the bass part at that point, so needs to be heard above the volume of the right-hand chords. The same occurs again at bar 31 - 34.
Bars 5, 17 and 28 have the word cresc. written in, as apposed to the standard, more noticeable hairpin sign, so this detail can be easily missed. The slurred pairs of right-hand quavers, such as those that can be seen at bar 7, should be played with a lightness of touch on the last note of each of those pairs (i.e. the staccato notes) in order to create a delicate, elegant effect. A similar approach can also be taken around bar 30.
