00:00Hey, it's Nikki Vaughn, 105.1 The Bounce, Detroit Stoveback, Hip Hop, and R&B.
00:13I am here with a very special guest, Sarah from Friends for Animals.
00:18Yes.
00:19Right? How are you today?
00:20Good. How are you? We're so glad to be here.
00:22Good. I am so glad to have you.
00:24Now tell us, who do we have here, our special guest?
00:26So today, our special guest, her name is Sherbert. She is a seven-year-old, we think maybe Black Lab Mix.
00:33We're not really sure. She came to us as a stray, actually.
00:37And she has been at the shelter for about two months now, just looking for her forever home.
00:42Oh, and she is beautiful.
00:44She's a sweetie.
00:44I love her already. We got to get her home. She's so playful.
00:49Chasing her tail. Yeah, she's a good girl.
00:52So tell me, what kind of home would you, is the ideal home for Sherbert, a dog like Sherbert?
00:57So she is, what we've seen at the shelter, she's really sweet. She's gentle. She's older. She is seven.
01:03So we think probably just a calm home. She does like to play. I mean, she'll get active, but I think just kind of chill.
01:10You know, she'd probably be a good couch buddy.
01:13Oh, that sounds perfect for me.
01:14Yeah. She's done okay with, she's been in playgroups at the shelter. She's done okay with other dogs, but I think she would be fine being an only dog because she's pretty chill.
01:24She likes the attention.
01:25Yeah.
01:26I think she'd, I think she'd be happy with pretty much anyone.
01:29That's amazing. You got some good stuff going on at Friends for Animals.
01:32We do. So our big news right now is we actually took in, it was started by MHS. They were the main partners, but we partnered with them and we took in, we have six of them, but altogether there are 73 dogs that we flew out of the path of the hurricane, Hurricane Dorian.
01:52Wow.
01:52So they were dogs that have been at the shelters down there, just waiting for adopted. They're not, a bunch of people have talked to us and they said, oh, well, you know, how are they gonna, you know, if they got lost in the hurricane, they aren't.
02:01They were previously there. Most of them have been in those shelters for a while. So we took actually in six of them and we're going through all the medical and everything now, but they should be up for adoption soon.
02:11Nice.
02:12Now, if someone was, because my fiance, I love animals. I want a dog so bad, but my fiance is, yeah, we're working on him. The kids and I, we're working on him. But if someone in that situation, they wanted to help you guys out, your organization, but they are not looking to adopt right away, what can they do?
02:35Yeah, we have a bunch of different options. Um, there's always donations, which are always helpful. Um, they can volunteer with us. Um, our adult volunteers start at 16 and we actually do have a youth program, um, that they work with an adult mentor. So if you're younger, you can do that. Um, we always have foster families. If you kind of want to give it a go, um, always need kittens, usually need puppies or dogs sometimes just to get them out of the shelter. If they've been there a while or if they're recovering from, you know, other medical issues or surgeries.
03:04And then we always have, you know, you can start a fundraiser. You can, I mean, summer's kind of over, but you can do a lemonade stand. You can start a Facebook fundraiser. I mean, there's, there's a bunch of things.
03:13Lots of ways to help. Now, how can they reach you if they're looking for your organization?
03:17All right. So our website is metrodetroitanimals.org. And that's the best thing. It has everything. Um, we're on Facebook at Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit, along with Twitter and Instagram.
03:28Nice. And is there a tip or something that I should know? Let's say I'm a cat owner.
03:34Yes.
03:34And is there a tip that you would like to share for fall? Something, you know, that I should know coming up this season?
03:42Well, with us still, it's still kitten season. Um, a lot of people, we get kittens. Um, there's still litters that are coming in. Um, a lot of people call us and ask what to do if they find kittens.
03:54Um, the best thing, if you find a litter of kittens, especially if you don't see a mom anywhere, is you can bring them.
04:01You can call either your animal control or call a shelter and they'll, we'll give you some tips. Um, sometimes it's best to leave them for a little bit and see if, you know, watch and see if the mom comes back.
04:10If the mom doesn't come back and they're abandoned, it's best to take them somewhere that they can get help.
04:14Because if they're still that small, a lot of them can't actually survive on their own.
04:18Yeah. Now, what can I do to gain their trust? Because cats aren't very trusty.
04:23When they're, if they're that little, a lot of times they're, they're fine. They're just looking for someone that'll help. So.
04:31All right. Good stuff there. Sarah, thank you again.
04:33No problem.
04:34For bringing Sherbert in. We have to find Sherbert at home.
04:37We do.
04:38Let's, let's do that.
04:39Yeah.
