00:00The latest in college esports from the students that play, play, play, go behind the scenes at the schools that game.
00:09The only place where esports are on campus.
00:14Welcome back to Checkpoint XP on campus, your number one resource for collegiate esports.
00:19And I'm going to throw it right back to the desk because I know Jacob is chomping at the bit to talk about the new Sonic trailer for the movie coming out.
00:28Jacob, how you feeling, man?
00:30The Sonic movie is here.
00:31They gave me a minute.
00:32I'm going to use my minute, okay?
00:34He looks good.
00:36He is not bad.
00:37When he speaks, it is not cringey.
00:39There are jokes that are funny.
00:41There's some lore stuff that's not correct.
00:44His fur is not lightning.
00:46He does not have special powers in his fur, but that is okay.
00:49Jim Carrey, he's not that great.
00:52He's kind of funny sometimes, but the combat is wicked.
00:56You saw, like, five seconds of Green Hill Zone exhilarating.
01:00He didn't say, uh, meow.
01:03He looks so good.
01:08I'm so excited.
01:09Do you even have any thoughts on it?
01:10Well, I just thought that it was a...
01:12Four.
01:13What thoughts do you have?
01:14I thought it was a really good trailer, okay?
01:16Please help me.
01:17This movie went...
01:18All right, all right, all right.
01:19Just stop, okay?
01:20Just whatever.
01:21Just whatever.
01:22You guys just can't even talk about this properly.
01:24Sonic fans get excited.
01:25Welcome back to Checkpoint XP on Camp.
01:28It's your number one resource for Collegiate Esports.
01:31For our last segment of the day, we like to have a little fun or maybe just get on our soapbox for something.
01:37So we have one of our managing editors, Kevin Kelly, joining Jacob in the studio to talk about Jedi Fallen Order and their experiences with the game.
01:47So, guys, how are you liking it?
01:50Woo!
01:50How far in are you?
01:51I'm a decent way through.
01:53I'm on Kashyyyk the second time around.
01:56Is that the red one?
01:57No, that's Dathomir.
01:58Okay.
01:59I don't know all these weird names, but I'm probably like four or five hours in.
02:02I'm really liking it.
02:03The atmosphere is really good.
02:04I know you're playing on a console, so it looks not that great.
02:07Yeah.
02:07But on a PC, man, that man's looking clean.
02:09And so everything about this is just Star Wars, right?
02:14Like, you hear the music, you're like, oh, this is nice.
02:17You see the planets, you're like, oh, this is nice.
02:19My thing is, like, initially, because, like, the graphical limitations of a PS4 Pro, by the way.
02:25Yeah, it's pretty weak.
02:26Like, it turned me off, like, initially to the game, and, like, I was just like, God, I'm not feeling it so far.
02:32But playing it on a bigger TV and getting, like, really good feel for the combat and whatnot, it's gotten me, like, you know, I've gotten, you know, a better feel for it.
02:42And I'm really getting deep into the story now.
02:44And I think Cal's a pretty compelling character.
02:46Well, I think the game opens so strong.
02:48It's, like, very much an uncharted opening, which is really cool.
02:51We're like, oh, let me hang from this bullet train as there's Cliff Face just rushing by my head.
02:57Oh, yeah.
02:57It's like, bro.
02:58The action starts right away.
03:01And it doesn't really let up until, you know.
03:03There are some aspects of it that feel more like, you know, sometimes I forget I'm playing a Star Wars game.
03:10We're tomb raiding and whatnot.
03:11They really want you to explore.
03:12Sometimes a little too much.
03:13The exploration is cool.
03:14Like, the parkour is cool.
03:16But sometimes they're like, hey, we want you to look around this planet.
03:19Can we talk about one thing, though?
03:20Hmm.
03:21Cal Kestis is a scrub.
03:23Just the biggest scrub Jedi ever.
03:25Because every time I'm trying to take out a simple scout trooper, I have the utmost difficulty.
03:31This game is hard.
03:33I don't understand.
03:37Good.
03:39Yes, Kevin.
03:41Use your fear.
03:42Now, only your fear will allow you to switch the difficulty to story mode.
03:49Then your journey towards the dark side will be complete.
03:53How can you call us out like that?
03:54But I'm a real gamer.
03:55Why are you so evil?
03:59No.
04:00You have forgotten that gaming is about fun.
04:05No.
04:07How are you so dark?
04:08I'll never lower the difficulty.
04:10We'll never listen to you.
04:12We have friendship.
04:13So, very well then.
04:16If you will not turn, then perhaps he will.
04:21He?
04:22Kevin.
04:23Kevin.
04:24Welcome back to Checkpoint XP on campus.
04:31Your number one resource for collegiate esports.
04:34Don't forget to slide on over to CheckpointXP.com slash shop.
04:38Where you can find all sorts of cool gear.
04:41And speaking of cool gear, we're going to take a look at some of college's hottest, and I mean hot, esports jerseys.
04:51And Jacob is going to take us to the fashion corner.
04:53So, guys, take it away.
04:55Welcome back.
04:56Daniel, darling.
04:57What?
04:57How would you walk out of the house like that?
05:00Would it kill a man to put some color on his clothes?
05:04We haven't started this segment yet, and I'm not part of it.
05:07So, let's just, let's please move on.
05:09How about you just get to the jerseys?
05:10You already dropped the ball.
05:12Okay.
05:13Not fetch.
05:14Okay.
05:15Let's start off.
05:17Let's start off with UC Irvine's jersey.
05:19Let's take a look.
05:21Hot.
05:22Okay.
05:22I'm a big fan.
05:23The purple, the blue, all go well together.
05:26I like the little Gamertag bar.
05:29Usually, the different colored sleeves can be pretty ugly, but this one, I think, blends really well.
05:34Also, like, letters on the side, this is one of those things to where, like, it could be awkward, but it's not.
05:39So, I'm a big fan.
05:42Okay.
05:42How about, let's go with Maryville.
05:44Bland.
05:45Oh.
05:46Too much white.
05:47It's just, there's so much negative space, and I'm just not a fan.
05:50Like, they have, like, some weird, like, lines on the side, but they're so bright, you can hardly see them.
05:55And it just looks like some, like, YouTube channel logo.
05:59Personally.
06:00It kind of looks like body armor.
06:01Actually, yeah, it's body armor.
06:03So, not as unique.
06:04Not as hot on it.
06:05All right.
06:05Next up, we have Rutgers.
06:08Rutgers.
06:08This one is not actively bad.
06:11It does a kind of wraparound thing.
06:13I think that's kind of cool.
06:15The logo on the top is fine.
06:17I do like the white on the chest.
06:18It does the two different sleeves.
06:20So, I'd say, and, you know what, the more I look at it, the less I hate it.
06:23So, like, the middle design's pretty cool.
06:25I'd give it, like, you know, probably, like, an A-.
06:27Oh, wow.
06:28Okay.
06:29Next up, Lackawanna College.
06:31What a sick jersey.
06:33This thing is metal.
06:35I am a big fan of this.
06:37Like, look at all the weird colors.
06:39They're all just kind of touching each other, and it has the mirrored sleeves, which I like.
06:42I like what it's looking like on the sides.
06:45And see, the negative space in the middle is only a little part.
06:49You want to have negative space that's controlled.
06:50You don't want to have negative space, it's just a whole thing.
06:53So, big fan.
06:54And last, but certainly not least, we have the juggernaut of college esports, Harris Bergstorm.
07:00And this is hot.
07:02I like it.
07:03Their logo is really cool.
07:05I like how they have, like, the little designs kind of juxtapositioning, juxtapositioning against each other.
07:13I like that.
07:14Also, I think the sleeves are really cool.
07:15I'm kind of obsessed with esport jersey sleeves.
07:18Really?
07:19Because they always do something weird with them, and this one's no exception.
07:23So, again, I think mirrored is better than two different ones.
07:26But I think this is a really strong logo to go with a really strong school.
07:30So, out of the five of these, which one was the best, which one was the worst?
07:33Worst is Maryville, for sure.
07:36Then, after that, I'd probably say...
07:38I like Irvine, Irvine Top, Harrisburg...
07:42Ooh!
07:43Um, Lac...
07:45Laguana?
07:45That one.
07:46And Rutgers, which are all good.
07:48Just Maryville's just not as fetch.
07:49You heard it, Maryville.
07:51Fix your jerseys.
07:52Welcome back to Checkpoint XP on campus.
07:57And, unfortunately, this is going to be our last live recording for the year.
08:03We're going to be back at the start of the next semester in January.
08:06But we wanted to get all the on-camera folks and producers together and get them on camera
08:11and talk about some of our favorite stories from 2019.
08:15Not just that we've covered on this show, but just in general.
08:18So, we want to go around the table.
08:20We're going to start with Daniel.
08:22What was your favorite story of 2019?
08:26My favorite story of 2019 is the retirement of Reggie Fils-Aimé.
08:31Really?
08:33Reggie?
08:33What is your problem with Reggie?
08:35Do not...
08:36I don't have an issue with Reggie.
08:37I'm just saying, like, of all the things to talk about, Reggie?
08:41No Reggie slander, please.
08:42Yeah, look.
08:43Look, Reggie...
08:44I'm not slander.
08:44Let me explain myself.
08:46Let me explain myself.
08:47Reggie Fils-Aimé was kind of like their first trend of, like, CEOs who not only were CEOs,
08:52but were kind of like mascots for their respective companies.
08:55Because, you know, Reggie embraced the memes.
08:57He embraced...
08:58Every joke that happened on its expense, he embraced it.
09:01He was not afraid to laugh at himself.
09:02And you have to appreciate that.
09:04And he became so endearing to gamers.
09:07And that when he had to retire, people were sad.
09:11And it was a big moment for a lot of us.
09:13All right.
09:14I'll give you that.
09:15So we're going to move on to, I guess, Orange Cassidy over there.
09:20We'll move over to Ethan.
09:21Oh, wait.
09:22A.K.A.
09:23The Grass Man.
09:24Orange Cassidy.
09:24I'm a grass man.
09:26Still mad about the money.
09:26Anyway.
09:27You'll get over it.
09:28Anyway.
09:29Keep with the theme of Nintendo.
09:31I feel like my biggest story right now has to be with Smash.
09:35And Banjo-Kazooie finally getting in Smash after years and years of japes and jokes.
09:43My favorite game finally gets its representation.
09:47And honestly, I could not be happier.
09:49And I also have, like, one more segment, too, where I think, also, another big deal is Melee being out of Evo.
09:57Yes.
09:58Praise the Lord.
10:00I was going to say that.
10:00Melee being out of Evo.
10:01Kevin, Kevin, please bring some semblance.
10:04Take us, yeah, take us to control.
10:06Bring some semblance of normalcy here.
10:08We need Master Chief.
10:09You joke.
10:10I can't wait, actually.
10:11I can't believe you went over the importance of Terry being in Smash.
10:16He's so much more important than Banjo-Kazooie.
10:18That's why everyone had to Google who he was when he came out.
10:21Well, it's just, you know.
10:22My biggest story of the year was an actual eSports story.
10:25Jacob's working real hard to get on my bad side.
10:28He's working real hard.
10:30But anyway, Kevin, please proceed.
10:31Please.
10:32My biggest story this year was the split between Tfue and FaZe Clan.
10:36It was the complete opposite of amicable,
10:39and it really showed us a lot as far as, you know,
10:42the leverage between eSports organizations and players and streamers.
10:46And it sparked a lot of interesting discussions
10:49that I feel like are going to get reignited soon
10:51as that case progresses through courts and whatnot.
10:55It's going to get ugly.
10:56Yeah.
10:57It already has been.
10:59All right.
11:00So, Jacob, let us know.
11:02For me, my story is also Call of Duty related,
11:04and it's just the announcement of the league.
11:06It's one of my favorite.
11:07I did it with the Overwatch League, too,
11:08whenever they're like, here's a new team,
11:09and I would just immediately read the brand page
11:11because it was just like, it was so good.
11:13Now it's like, here's a new Call of Duty team.
11:14Here's their brand.
11:15Here's their logo.
11:16Here's their merch.
11:17And I looked at, like, all 12 teams,
11:18and I was like, this is so exciting.
11:21And it's about to start, so it's also so exciting.
11:24For sure.
11:25And for me, it's definitely got to be Blizzard
11:27and their reaction to Blitzchung and his political statements.
11:31It was one of the first times we had seen, you know,
11:34massive public pressure on a video game company for, you know,
11:38in my opinion, the total right reasons
11:40instead of just being ridiculous as usual.
11:43And Blizzard had the cop to it,
11:45and I think that that was something that was very powerful for me,
11:48and I thought it was a really great story over 2019.
11:51But very quickly, around the horn,
11:54what's going to be big in 2020?
11:56Same order.
11:57Daniel, go.
11:58What's going to be big in 2020 is we're going to see Smash
12:00become the new hot game of the collegiate esports scene.
12:03Mm-hmm.
12:04I think so, too.
12:05Master Chief and Smash.
12:06God.
12:07Hopefully.
12:08That was a joke, man.
12:09He took it too far.
12:10It was a joke.
12:11Knack 3.
12:12What the hell?
12:13Hey!
12:14My man.
12:17And me is Sonic Adventure 3.
12:20No, it's going to be the Call of Duty League.
12:22Just all the drama that's going to spiral out of that.
12:24I cannot wait for just constant tweets that are only negative.
12:28Mm-hmm.
12:29And I'm going to say that Home and Away is going to be a bigger success
12:33than I think people give it credit for.
12:37I think it may actually work out quite well for both Overwatch.
12:40Maybe not so much for Call of Duty, but Call of Duty League may surprise us.
12:44I think the complete opposite.
12:45Mm-hmm.
12:46A lot of people love them from Call of Duty.
12:49But that's going to be it for this year's Tech Ray Expo on campus.
12:57Yeah, we will be back.
12:58So tell your friends about us.
13:00We'll be back in 2020 when the semester starts back up again,
13:04and there will be more collegiate esports news to be had.
13:08I want to thank all the guys right there at that table.
13:11Daniel Aguia, Ethan Schneider, Kevin Kelly, Jacob Brothers.
13:15I want to thank all of the UNLV staff who help out behind the scenes.
13:19They're absolutely amazing.
13:21We also want to thank all the staff here at Checkpoint XP that help out,
13:26including Weird Beer, who's looking very strangely at his phone,
13:29and now he's making a very angry face at me.
13:32And we also want to thank you guys for being listeners, for being viewers.
13:38Help us get it to the next level.
13:39If you're in college, let us know.
13:42We want you to be a part of the story.
13:44So stick around, and we will see you in 2020, the future,
13:48with more Checkpoint XP on campus.
13:52Take care of yourself, guys.
13:54I love you.
13:55Have a happy Christmas holiday.
14:00Great job, Ethan.
14:01Great job.
14:04My God.
