Do you remember when Pat McAfee cut a promo while making a NFL Draft ick? Well, no-fun Danny is OUT on this whole idea!
Transcript
00:00And Toby just told you in the update that Gary Clark is going to be representing the commanders at the NFL draft.
00:08Each team sends a dignitary, former great, to announce the draft pick for its organization in the second round.
00:15And for Washington, Clark, the four-time Pro Bowler and a multi-time Super Bowl champion, draws the honor.
00:22Gary Clark was a baller. 1,200 yards in 86, 1,000 yards in 87, another 1,200 yards in 89.
00:32Ended up in 90 going for 1,100, 91 on one of the great teams ever, 70 catches for 1,300 yards.
00:40I mean, he had some monster total.
00:42He was incredible. He was the quintessential deep threat.
00:44And even when he had the giveaways, the tells where his mouthpiece wouldn't be in when he wasn't running pass routes,
00:50still didn't matter if the offense was that good.
00:51He had two seasons where he averaged 19 yards per catch.
00:55Oh, yeah.
00:56Which is unheard of.
00:56Old-school Joe Gibbs offense.
00:58Smash you in the mouth for play after play after play after play.
01:02Finally get sick of it.
01:03Then he'd know the perfect time to call it the play action.
01:06Still, by the way, 46th all-time in yards, which you go, okay, that's pretty good.
01:10When he retired was, I think, in the 20s.
01:13Everybody that superseded him has played here over the last couple of decades.
01:16Passing has become way more ubiquitous.
01:18What's crazy to me is, in a year where he caught 56 passes, he was a first-team All-Pro wide receiver.
01:24Think about that.
01:25Because he averaged almost 20 a catch and went for 1,000.
01:28But it was Deshaun Jackson-like from this era, essentially, where he'd just get behind everybody.
01:33But, as I said going to break, Danny is a little bit salty about this.
01:37So, I want to allow you to explain yourself, Danny, why it was that you came in here today, frothing at the mouth a bit.
01:45You were foaming up over Gary Clark getting the nod to address the audience and make the pick for the commanders in the second round.
01:54Because I like this.
01:55I already know what's going to happen.
01:57There's going to be a twisting of my words, a misinterpretation, and, frankly, an irresponsible accusation.
02:03I love Gary Clark.
02:05You will not get me to say anything bad about Gary Clark.
02:08In fact, Gary Clark owned a restaurant at one point I did stand-up at.
02:11I could barely get on stage because I was so overwhelmed at having him shake my hand and say that he was glad to have me there.
02:17I love Gary Clark.
02:18I don't love the bit in general.
02:21Here's the deal that they do.
02:23Okay?
02:23First round, it's Goodell.
02:24There's one moment of delay where he lets everybody boo, and then they get on with the actual show.
02:29And, like, here's the actual pair of the picks that you waited so long for.
02:31He walks out, he tells you what the third pick in the NFL draft, the Miami Dolphins select, Toby Altizer, you know, offensive tackle.
02:40A bad pick if I'm grading that one, but, like, respectfully to Toby.
02:43But, like, and then they give the, it's a TV program, so they give everybody the analysis, and they do the bit.
02:47Blah, blah, blah.
02:48Second round, I don't know why they started doing this, but they do it.
02:51It's now everybody has to be, in order to try to entice viewers or get people more excited, who knows, whether it's panned into the local audience, it's there.
02:58They bring out a legend, and the legend doesn't just go, with the 41st pick in the NFL draft, the team I played for, selects, blah, blah, blah.
03:06It's always, what's up, Raider Nation?
03:14Where are my Raider fans?
03:16Shh!
03:16Pick!
03:17What's the pick?
03:17What's the pick?
03:18What's the pick?
03:19Now!
03:19I've waited months!
03:20No more delaying!
03:21Now!
03:22The pick now!
03:23Stop this!
03:23I have consumed everything you've asked me to consume!
03:27I've read all the things!
03:29I've, I've, how many mock drafts have I lathered myself in?
03:33I'm comparing mock drafts between mock drafts.
03:35You know what's 2.0 mock?
03:36What's different than it's 2.3 mock?
03:38Because they had one trade in there I didn't account for.
03:40I can't wait anymore.
03:43I don't need a WWE promo for your four seconds in the sun.
03:47You were great, Clay Matthews Jr.
03:49You were awesome, guy that played for the Raiders in the 80s.
03:53Yes!
03:54You were awesome!
03:56Have a sit down with the local Raiders TV.
03:59Talk about the pick.
04:00Get your moment in the sun.
04:01Endorse your car dealership.
04:03Talk about your local restaurant and you're giving 2 bucks off Appy's.
04:07Stop wasting the time.
04:10I need the pick now.
04:13It's not a delay.
04:15So, to close, if they would just come up there and say the pick with the 41st pick,
04:19I keep saying 40, with the 51st pick in the NFL draft,
04:23this team selects, boom.
04:24If they did that, I'd be fine with it, but they don't.
04:26They initially were doing it that way, by the way.
04:29Like, the legend, I think of Daryl Green or some of these other guys over the years,
04:33they walk up.
04:34Now, there's always going to be a big ovation and a pop for a lot of these guys
04:37because they're superstars and they'll soak it up a little bit.
04:39So, it was a 15, 20, 30-second delay, whatever.
04:42But it was not a trolling of the audience because they played for the Bears and the things at Lambeau.
04:46So, what happened was, I think, Pat McAfee, who is...
04:51A ruiner of things.
04:52No?
04:53That's not where you're going.
04:53That wasn't where I was going.
04:54But who is, like, a entertainer and, you know, has done stand-up comedy
04:59and is in the WWE and is a promo cutter and is all about the, you know,
05:03when the mic is on and the camera's on him, he's not going to be subtle.
05:08Like, he wants the attention.
05:09So, he went up there and he cut this gigantic promo,
05:12which turned into a really funny thing.
05:14And everyone really liked it.
05:15And he was...
05:16I think it was in Nashville that year.
05:18Find this for me, Darius, if you would.
05:20McAfee, when he was introducing the Colts pick in Nashville.
05:23How long are we on for?
05:24Do we have enough time to play the whole thing?
05:25But he trolled them and went hard and basically talked about how great he was
05:29and how great the Colts are and how bad the Titans are.
05:32And the fans let him have it.
05:34And you know how this goes.
05:36Sure.
05:36Remember, a couple of unfunny people at the league office went,
05:40oh, my God, that was gold.
05:42That was the best thing that's ever happened.
05:44And now they're hunting that and they're trying to recreate it.
05:46So, I guarantee you they're telling the legends,
05:49hey, you know what you should mention?
05:50That time you caught that touchdown in the Super Bowl against this team.
05:53They're just chasing that high, you know, that sugar high of the first time McAfee did it.
05:59They've had...
06:00Now the new one is Kyle Brandt from NFL Network,
06:03who does all the skits and bits on Good Morning Football.
06:06They've had him come out and cut promos against the city.
06:09And it's the troll job.
06:11That's what they're trying to do.
06:12This was McAfee when it...
06:14I guess it ruined it for Danny.
06:15I don't really care that much either way.
06:17It certainly makes it more annoying when you're watching it that it drags on.
06:22But this was 2019 when the second round changed forever.
06:25Nashville, I'm not going to say a single word about the Tennessee Titans record
06:30against the Indianapolis Colts because I was a punter
06:34and there's no reason for me to talk about that.
06:37With that being said, we did not punt much against the Tennessee Titans.
06:42So, you probably have no clue who I am to begin.
06:46Two years ago, when I retired from the Colts,
06:52I retired alongside two greats, Robert Mathis and Joe Reitz.
06:57A couple months later, I watched the draft.
07:00Robert Mathis announced the pick.
07:02Joe Reitz announced the pick.
07:04And then an orangutan announced the fourth round draft pick.
07:08I was replaced by a zoo animal.
07:11I was not upset about it.
07:13Because the orangutan was terrible at his job.
07:16With that being said, the Indianapolis Colts are the hottest team,
07:21not only in the AFC South, but the entire NFL.
07:25A young nucleus surrounding the Stanford nerd, Andrew Luck.
07:31Two old pros were drafted last year, 10 this year.
07:36And with the 89th pick of the 2019 NFL draft,
07:41the Indianapolis Colts, Jim Irsay, and Chris Ballard select future Hall of Famer,
07:49linebacker from Stanford, Bobby O'Kariki.
07:57O'Kariki.
07:58Pat McAfee, everybody.
07:59He botched Bobby O'Kariki's name, but we'll let that slide.
08:03He didn't know what we know five years later, which is he's a pretty decent football player.
08:06He's good.
08:06He's a good player.
08:07Probably not headed to the Hall of Fame.
08:08No.
08:09But so that was entertaining to me.
08:12I know you don't like Pat McAfee and you wish he wears sleeves, but that was fun.
08:15If you could convince me that the draft is taking longer,
08:18here's what you're missing out on is just that the next the pick has already been made.
08:25It says, you know, the countdown clock or pick is in.
08:28It's just filling time with somebody on stage instead of watching your 93rd time of seeing
08:34Mel Kiper say who his best available is.
08:36I don't mind that that much.
08:38I don't think it's adding.
08:39Now, you may have to wait because he could have walked out there and just said,
08:41O'Kariki.
08:42Is that your whole argument?
08:43Yes.
08:44If he just comes out and says, so what if he did this?
08:46The pick's Bobby O'Kariki, and then he does a big song and dance.
08:49Is that okay with you?
08:50Way better.
08:51Okay.
08:51But they don't.
08:52They can't do that because they know they're useless as soon as they say the pick.
08:55Because what everyone's waiting for is the pick.
08:57Now, he's better at that than like the average, you know, I don't know.
09:01Like if they do it in Minnesota, here comes like a Detroit Lion from the 90s that played
09:06on a bunch of losing teams.
09:08Yeah, he controlled them.
09:09Herman Moore's a nice, quiet, polite man who might just say the name of the pick.
09:12But whatever.
09:12However, the point is, I get some me time and I get all the showcase stuff and I'm going
09:18to cut a promo or whatever.
09:20McAfee's good at it.
09:21As much as I dislike him and don't enjoy anything that he does, I acknowledge that there's talent
09:25there.
09:26The guy that, you know, again, run-of-the-mill linebacker Larry or, you know, fullback Fred
09:32doing it 10 years, 15 years, 20 years after he retires is uninteresting.
09:36I don't care about the Seahawks-Rams rivalry from long ago when they do it there.
09:41They want to play this up for like basically the people in the room to react.
09:46The rest of us, I need that pick.
09:48Yeah.
09:48The pick is the thing.
09:50You're there to announce the pick and you do that.
09:53Now we're on business.
09:54Now we can start doing anything else.
09:56I certainly understand where you're coming from.
10:00I'm not going to file this into no fun Danny drawers.
10:05You could.
10:05I'm not going to do it.
10:06It could go under that big umbrella.
10:08Because I think you're actually largely correct.
10:10Like I'm here for the draft.
10:12I want the information and you're a distraction to that.
10:16And I totally get that.
10:17When I watch Fox NFL Sunday and Terry Bradshaw's doing an awful bit, I want that to end so that
10:22I could just get back to the television show, please.
10:24And I think this is kind of feeding out of that same menu, so to speak.
10:28But I can't be moved to emotion really.
10:33Because again, it's not like a one hour draft is turning into one hour and six minutes.
10:37I think it's just what we're seeing in that moment is different.
10:40And to your point, I've waited months.
10:42The pick's about to be made.
10:44The anticipation is there.
10:45Most of the time, it's already been tipped, by the way.
10:48I mean, the idea that you don't know who someone's picking until it's set at the podium, I think, is disingenuous.
10:53Because at a 99% clip, we already know.
10:56Social media, there's a big fight over should the reporters do this or not.
11:00The last time the commanders made a pick at the podium that I didn't know who it was before the name came out of someone's mouth was probably 15 years ago.
11:08I mean, it just doesn't happen anymore.
11:11It's not a thing.
11:12So maybe it would be different if I really was like, who is it?
11:16Let me know.
11:17Or if I was getting in an elevator and the doors were closing and he had to get the word out before they closed.
11:22That's just not reality.
11:23Well, it is for those of us that they're glued to the phone and actually watching the program.
11:28I think most people now watch the draft with second screen.
11:30A lot of folks do.
11:31I think that's how the majority of people do it.
11:33When the clock expires for pick time and the second clock hasn't started yet and you're cutting promos, you're now wasting my time.
11:41And so don't do that is my kind of counter.
11:44Don't waste the time.
11:46Say one thing, maybe at most.
11:49Hi.
11:50And now say the pick.
11:52Like, I'll give you half of one second.
11:55Other than that, you're now wasting time.
11:57So I want, all I want is the information.
11:59I want fit.
12:00I want analysis.
12:01I want info.
12:02That's why I tune in.
12:03So much stuff has been ruined and watered down.
12:05And they, you know, now with the other drafts, it's like what, you know, what inspired the clothing that you're wearing or what, uh, what's sewn into the patch of your blazer.
12:14All the other kind of crap.
12:15I don't care about.
12:16There's already too much of that.
12:17They've already ruined a lot of things in the draft for me.
12:20I'm way more annoyed by that.
12:21It's still special.
12:22And you're, they're taking away slowly and surely the things that make it special.
12:25See, to me, you're sleeping on what's worse is the later rounds where they're just like going to Germany because they're playing a game there this year.
12:33And some guys standing there, like I'm standing in front of the bobblehead of the first Bundesliga captain.
12:40And did you know on October 13th, the Bengals are playing here.
12:45And speaking of which their pick at 96 hit like that, get up, get off my TV screen, right?
12:50All of the selling and the, I don't care.
12:53I don't need any of that.
12:53I just want the football, but a legend was put in the time and been one of the greats.
12:58Gary Clark, man.
12:59I love Gary Clark.
13:00Have your two minutes.
13:02I'm a Rick Snyder style.
13:04I'm gonna give you two minutes, Gary.
13:06You're going to get those.
13:07You're going to steal it from Rick Snyder.
13:09No, no, no.
13:09I'm just saying I'm giving Gary Clark to two minutes.
13:12Oh, I see.
13:13He's earned it.
13:14When he taps that bell after two minutes, Rick Snyder style and gives me the pick, you get your 120 seconds.
13:21You know why you do Gary Clark?
13:22Because I got, not personally, because it was a long time ago, but there's fond memories.
13:27I've seen the highlights of those 10,856 yards.
13:31With 31 teams, 31 cities.
13:33And again, I love Gary Clark.
13:34I'd like to see Gary Clark locally.
13:35They don't care, but they get their guy when he comes up.
13:37Yeah.
13:37So then you got to sit through 31 guys to get to your guy?
13:39That's not good math.
13:40Not as fun.
13:41I don't want that.
13:42My point is, I'd like to hear from Gary Clark a lot.
13:45Local television people.
13:47Us.
13:48Let's have Gary Clark in studio to talk to Gary Clark.
13:50But it's that or they're showing the crowd.
13:53It's that or they're talking to Ashton Gentry about what's inside of his blazer jacket.
13:59I could get it.
14:00What does this message mean on your lapel?
14:02I could understand if it's the sixth and seventh round and nobody's heard of any of these dudes and it's like the 15th guy at SMU and they're going to Melanie.
14:09I'm not really sure this guy is.
14:11I don't know if he has an address.
14:12I don't know where he's from, how tall he is, what color his eyes are.
14:15Okay, fine.
14:16The second round?
14:18We got to ham it up to make it interesting?
14:20Guy, I will gladly.
14:21Analysis.
14:23Information.
14:23I will gladly move this back to the third round if that's what you want to do.
14:27Well, I'd like it never.
14:28I'd like it late on Saturday afternoons.
14:30Your contention, one of them, is that it's the second round.
14:32I think that's fair.
14:33The second round is still big boy business.
14:35This is still the top 64.
14:37This is still early.
14:37We're finding starters.
14:38We're drafting QBs that matter.
14:40But yeah, I get that.
14:42Round four, we could do the Gary Clark business on day three.
14:45If we have to have it.
14:46If you told me we have to have it.
14:47I argue we don't, but let's say I'll stipulate that we have that we're going to have it.
14:49Remember, you can't do it in like round seven because you got to do your Bundesliga.
14:53You got to do your Germany trip.
14:54Your Tom Rinaldi, like slow music story.
14:57Sure.
14:57You got to do some of those.
14:58It's all there.
14:59Give if we're going to do the stupid thing, which I, and again, I think it's stupid.
15:03Let's make it a much later round.
15:04Let's, let's not have starters and impact players being drafted.
15:08This is analysis time.
15:09This is good information time.
15:11Let's hold on to that.
