00:00Hey, what's up? It's Babs. It's Wow9401. And right now I am hanging with my girl, Ayla.
00:06What's up?
00:07What's up, girl?
00:09I'm so happy to be here.
00:11Now, have you ever been to Florida before?
00:12Okay, I was here for like a couple hours one time.
00:16Doing what?
00:16But this is my first time. I had a performance at a nightclub. And this was like five years ago. I don't even know longer than that, like seven years ago.
00:25What city was it in?
00:26It was in Tampa.
00:27Okay, so you remember which club it was?
00:29I don't remember. And I've been trying to find it and remember, and I cannot find it.
00:32It's all good.
00:33Yeah, man.
00:35So you just get it back from the VET Awards. How was that?
00:38Yes, it was great. The whole weekend was just like so awesome. I was really happy to just be there and be part of the festivities.
00:46Now, you're from L.A., right?
00:48Yes.
00:48Okay, so you were born and raised.
00:50Yes.
00:51What part of L.A.?
00:52The Valley, like North Hollywood area.
00:54I lived in Castaic for eighth grade, just for one year.
00:57That's a short little time.
01:00Yeah, I was so mad at my mom.
01:02Man.
01:03I was like, if I had to stay out there, I could have been a big star like you.
01:06Right. Oh, my goodness.
01:07Oh, my goodness.
01:08You are a star.
01:10Now, you got some dope songs out.
01:11I'm really digging your song, Shampoo.
01:14Thank you so much.
01:15Now, did you write that?
01:16Like, how did you come up with that?
01:17Yeah, I did.
01:18So, usually, like, with everything that I write, my producer, Katis, he'll kind of, like, do a beat first, and then I'll go and just lay a melody down.
01:26That was the same thing with that.
01:27And so, we basically just, I don't know, Shampoo was one of those songs that just came out.
01:33Like, I probably wrote that song in, like, 20 minutes.
01:36Wow.
01:37It just felt so, like, I feel like we've all been in that position of, like, leaving stuff somewhere or feeling, like, not seen, not heard.
01:44You know what I mean?
01:45In a relationship, and maybe it's a breakup.
01:47Maybe you left it on purpose.
01:48Oh, yeah.
01:48I leave my wigs on purpose.
01:50Totally.
01:50And then they'll be like, hmm.
01:52Like, it makes you, you know, makes them think of you.
01:55And so, for me, I don't know if it's just because of life experience or what, but it just came out.
01:59Like, I was literally writing it in a notebook, and it just was, like, the whole song.
02:02Yeah, no, I definitely felt that on a personal level.
02:05And I feel like when dudes let you leave things, that means that y'all together.
02:12Or do you think they take it and put it in, like, one of the boxes and hide it for the next year?
02:16Oh, my gosh.
02:17Like, one of 10 boxes or something.
02:19You know, I think that's true.
02:21Like, somebody asked me that, like, when do you think it's too soon to leave something at someone's house?
02:25I think it's whatever your situation is.
02:27Like, it's so based on the relationship.
02:29Right.
02:29But most of the time, if it's a dude, I feel like they're, like, or a woman, you know?
02:34I feel like it's more, like, hmm, it's a little more serious.
02:37Yeah.
02:37Like, I'm cool with having your stuff around.
02:39Have you ever found something at a dude's house that you were dating?
02:43And you were like, who's, you know, whose brush is this?
02:47I don't think I have.
02:49I don't think, not that I can think of.
02:51That's a good question.
02:52Have you?
02:52No, but, see, I can never be the mistress or the other woman because my wigs be shedding, girl, and then girls be finding strands of my hair.
03:00So, I can never.
03:01I'm not a good person to cheat with.
03:03I don't even want to do it.
03:04Same.
03:04Because I have so much.
03:05Oh, my God.
03:06It's so bad.
03:07And I have red hair, too.
03:08And it just, and it does go everywhere.
03:11Like, when I'm at the studio, my hair will just be, like, I'll be, like, what is this?
03:14In the booth, on the couch, like, literally everywhere.
03:16So, I feel that, for sure.
03:18Now, you sound so soulful.
03:20Like, are a lot of people shocked that you're a white girl?
03:23Like, when they first hear you and then they look you up and they're like, oh, man.
03:26I guess so.
03:28I guess so.
03:28I get a lot of messages about that and questions about that.
03:32I think, to me, like, I'm just myself.
03:34Right.
03:34I grew up listening to, you know, I guess more soulful artists.
03:38I've seen Patti LaBelle was one of your inspirations.
03:41Love her.
03:42You like her pies, too?
03:42Love her, of course, from Walmart.
03:44Are you kidding?
03:46Every single week.
03:48No.
03:48I love her, but I love everything about her, you know?
03:51And I just grew up listening to, especially soulful women, who, like, had a message, too.
03:57Like, a strong purpose and a strong message.
03:59And I don't know.
04:00I just think that soul music touches your soul.
04:03Like, what else?
04:04I can't imagine doing any other kind of music.
04:07Now, you know what else I like about you?
04:09I like that you really stand up for the women.
04:11Like, you're on the feminist wave and you want to make sure that, like, our voices is heard.
04:15Do you attend, like, any of the marches that go down?
04:18Yes, every year.
04:19Okay.
04:19I go to, like, everything that I possibly can.
04:22The Women's March in L.A. I've been to for the last couple years.
04:26And, you know, it's just powerful.
04:28Like, you can just feel it.
04:30This energy.
04:30Now, is it an email blast?
04:31Because I feel like I never know when the marches are.
04:33Okay, so I, it's usually in January in just about everywhere.
04:37But I always look it up.
04:39Like, when I feel like it's coming, because I don't get, like, an email or anything.
04:42I just always want to know, you know, even, like, Amber Rose does her thing in L.A.
04:46She does it in a couple cities, like, every year.
04:48Do you, have you ever been to any?
04:49Yes.
04:49I want to go with you next year, girl.
04:51Please do.
04:52Please do.
04:52Like, I love anything that is just, you know, standing up for human rights.
04:56Like, I'm a human rights activist.
04:58I will stand up and fight, like, literally on the street for what I, you know, for equality.
05:03I love that.
05:04Now, what's next for Isla?
05:05Like, you want to be in movies?
05:07I want to do it all.
05:09Okay.
05:09You know, right now, I'm about to have a video for my song Flowers is going to drop.
05:14Yes.
05:15And so that's going to be really exciting.
05:17You know, I have the video for Juice, for Shampoo.
05:19And this will kind of, like, I don't know, finish telling the story of my EP, War and Raindrops.
05:24And then we're working on the second EP.
05:25So there'll be new music pretty soon.
05:28People want music.
05:29Yes.
05:29I want the music.
05:31Well, I definitely feel you're a music on a spiritual level.
05:35And I think you're dope.
05:36And thank you for standing up for human rights.
05:38Oh, thank you so much.
05:39Now, they could just follow you on everything at Isla, right?
05:41Yes.
05:42IYLA.
05:43Yes.
05:43Look her up.
05:44She is a sexy ginger taking the R&B world by storm.
05:48Oh, you know what?
05:48Real quick.
05:49I saw that they said that somebody should come out with the R&B freshman class.
05:53You know how they do for the rappers?
05:54I saw that.
05:55Yeah.
05:55Who was that that tweeted that out?
05:57But I think that's a good idea.
05:58I think so, too.
05:59And I can't remember who tweeted it.
06:00I saw it on Shade Room.
06:01Yes.
06:01But I don't know who initially tweeted it.
06:03But it should happen.
06:04Definitely.
06:05Yes.
06:05We need to hit them up.
06:06Yes.
06:06Well, thank you so much, Isla, for coming by to Wild 94.1.
06:10I appreciate you, boo.
06:11Thank you so much.
06:12Thanks.
06:13I appreciate you.
