00:00It's Wild 94.1, the base party station, Davi Rolando, with a very special guest in the building with me today, Mr. Flip Dinero.
00:08We the best in the building, man. Thank you for stopping by.
00:11Bro, if three years ago, I would have told you, you at this point have half a billion streams, you're two times platinum, would you have believed me?
00:21I don't know. Honestly, I really don't know. I don't know, bro. It's crazy looking at it now because I didn't even know I had half a billion.
00:28Oh, yeah? Oh, really? That's news to you?
00:29I don't pay attention to my streams, so thank you for your support.
00:31Yeah, man. 500 million streams. But you're an artist, you're not like an overnight celebrity, an overnight success.
00:38I'm sure a lot of people that just heard the huge record probably thought, oh, man, this guy just started.
00:43But you've been really going hard in this music thing for a really long time. When did you first start taking music seriously?
00:50Honestly, I've been taking music serious my whole life. My mom, I grew up in a church, so I was in the choir.
00:57You know what I'm saying? And from that, I just grew into music. I just took music and continued to run with it.
01:02You know what I'm saying? So, yeah, I always took music serious.
01:05Okay. And you usually hear artists that, like, I grew up in the church with, like, big voice, like singer type.
01:11As an artist, as a hip-hop artist, how did you kind of make that comparison?
01:17It was tough, you know what I'm saying? That whole comparison, it was tough, you know what I mean?
01:20Because I wasn't allowed to listen to rap music back in the day, you know what I'm saying?
01:23So I had to kind of sneak that into my ear, you know what I mean?
01:26So when I did listen to it, I just caught the attraction to it.
01:30And I don't know.
01:32You're a New York kid. What are some of, like, the artists, some of the CDs that you remember having to, like, sneak from mom to be able to listen to?
01:39I wouldn't even say CDs. I'd say songs that I used to go on the internet and search up.
01:44It'd be Jadakiss, you know what I'm saying? Styles P, Outkast, you know what I mean?
01:50Shit like that, you know what I'm saying?
01:51Okay. So you had a little, like, up-north influence, a little down-south influence?
01:55Yeah, yeah, yeah. Of course.
01:55Do you ever feel pressured to, like, sound more like a New York artist?
01:59Because you have more of, like, a universal sound than, like, an up-north sound.
02:02Not at all.
02:03Really?
02:03Not at all. Because this is me, you know what I'm saying?
02:05Like, my sound is unique.
02:06Like, I mean, I don't contemplate on my sound. I just do it, you know what I'm saying?
02:10I don't sit and say, yo, I have to sound like this individual or this individual.
02:14Like, that's the blessing about me. Like, I just got that unique sound.
02:17Okay.
02:18It's Wild 94.1 The Bass Party Station backstage with Flip De Niro.
02:21One thing I like about your vibe is you a big jersey, dude. I like jerseys, too.
02:25What are a couple of your favorites? Do you have, like, some rare ones?
02:28And do you ever feel like you have to represent NY?
02:31Because I see you heavy with, like, the Knicks stuff and things like that.
02:34But you're over here in, like, the arch-rival Celtics.
02:36No, no, no, no, no, no.
02:37I just, honestly, I just cop jerseys on the color wave, you know what I'm saying?
02:40And I'm not going front. Like, my favorite jerseys are the Lakers, the Knicks, you know what I'm saying?
02:44Yeah.
02:45Yeah.
02:45Okay.
02:46So, let's talk about how the whole DJ Khaled, we the best situation first came about.
02:52Because that, like, for an up-and-coming artist, that's like hitting the lottery, the Powerball, the big one.
02:57How did that introduction first happen?
03:00So, I'm saying that introduction happened through my big brother, Sav, you know what I'm saying?
03:03And, like, he just kept promoting my music to everyone that he knew and that he was associated with.
03:08And Khaled just caught a liking to it, of course, you know what I mean?
03:12And he reached out, and we had several conversations after that, and it was just all love, you know what I'm saying?
03:17Yeah.
03:18So, the come-up was very hard, though, bro.
03:20It wasn't just one, two, three, like, easy.
03:22It sounds like it was just a piece of cake.
03:24But, honestly, like, I was grinding for a very, very, very long time.
03:27Were there ever, like, times when you just thought about quitting, when you thought about doing something a little bit easier?
03:33Nah, I never, I never, say, thought about quitting.
03:36It was just times where I sat back and looked at my, looked at what I was doing and was like, yo, am I really doing this?
03:42Like, it was more of a shock as opposed to, like, do I want to do this?
03:46I'll never, say, I want to stop it.
03:48When was that moment that you knew Leave Me Alone was about to be out of here?
03:54Was it, like, Odell Beckham posting it?
03:56Was it Kim Kardashian?
03:57Or was it just kind of, like, feedback you were getting from the streets?
04:00Nah, no, reality, it was the feedback I was getting from the streets.
04:03When I made it, it was me and my bro Lois.
04:05That's my engineer, you know what I'm saying?
04:07We've been making music since I was a kid.
04:08And, like, when I made the song, we kept running it back.
04:13And it was just like, yo, bro, I think we got one.
04:16Take me back to that day.
04:17Where were you?
04:17Who was in the studio?
04:19How long were you in the studio that day?
04:21It was, I wrote the song the same day.
04:23Same day.
04:24I was in the crib, of course, by myself.
04:26I called Lo.
04:27Lo, we live in the same hood, so I called Lo.
04:29I was like, yo.
04:29You were in New York?
04:30Yeah.
04:31Okay.
04:31In Brooklyn, Canarsie, that's my hood.
04:33Yeah, so I called Lo.
04:34I was like, yo, I'm about to pull up.
04:35Pulled up the same day.
04:37We recorded the track, and we just kept running it back.
04:40And I was just like, yo.
04:41Did you know?
04:42Yeah, we knew.
04:43You knew?
04:43We didn't know, but we just knew it was special.
04:46It didn't feel different than everything else?
04:48No, I wouldn't say it felt different, but we just knew it was something about that one,
04:52specifically, you know what I'm saying?
04:53Because after that, I just started coming through.
04:57Yeah, just bringing them.
04:59Speaking of hits, you got a brand new record.
05:01It's called If I Tell You.
05:02Tell me about the song, and tell me about the video, because you have some real special
05:07situations in the video.
05:08All right, so pretty much, first off, If I Tell You, it's a love song.
05:12It's a poem that I created for Wifey, you know what I'm saying?
05:15And I just transitioned that to the music.
05:18It's a vibe, pretty much.
05:19It captures the whole 2000 vibe of just wanting to love and just being on that whole happy,
05:26if I tell you, love vibe, you know what I'm saying?
05:28So that's pretty much what the song is.
05:30The visual, it was directed by Tiana Taylor.
05:33Okay, and it's dope because it's showing you how you can make a variance of music.
05:38You have your Leave Me Alone club banger, but now you have something that you pretty much
05:43made from a poem to a song.
05:45The video's cracking.
05:46I really like the video.
05:47You're in the diner.
05:48You're over there sipping tequila while old girl over there sipping on a milkshake.
05:52You keep it, right?
05:52Yeah, yeah, because that's something I would do.
05:56Some of that shit, some of that shit.
05:58That's dope.
05:58So you definitely look out for that if I tell you.
06:01So what's next with the We The Best?
06:03I know you've been all over the country, all over the world.
06:06You've touched the stage with Jay-Z, touched the stage with Beyonce.
06:10I mean, dreams are coming true left and right.
06:12What's the next move for the scenario?
06:13So what's next is just this body of work I'm about to drop.
06:16You know what I'm saying?
06:16It's just we're putting in footwork right now.
06:18I'm going state to state.
06:20I'm saying just promoting, just staying busy, staying occupied, making music.
06:23And that's pretty much it.
06:24That's what's next.
06:25This visual, like the visuals I have coming up, the body of work, and just the grind.
06:30That's next.
06:31All right, man.
06:31Let me ask you a couple more questions, then I'm going to let you go.
06:34No, no, no.
06:34I'm going to let you go.
06:35So, all right.
06:36There was a couple weeks ago we reported when the father of Assad, when Khaled's album came out.
06:40They said that he stormed into the record label office, and he wasn't happy.
06:47He was upset that it didn't hit number one like he expected to.
06:51Has Khaled ever had like a blow-up moment on you that you can recall?
06:55Because I know it's all about passion.
06:57It's all about, you know, wanting to be the best.
06:58No, no, no, no.
06:59First off, I didn't even know that happened.
07:01Oh, yeah.
07:02That happened for real?
07:03Yeah, yeah.
07:04It was widely reported.
07:06Yeah, I didn't even know that happened that's one.
07:07And two, nah, me and Khaled, we never had no situations like that.
07:11That's my big brother.
07:12I don't even know him to be that type of guy.
07:14That's why I'm like.
07:15Yeah.
07:16It was like a passion thing, you know?
07:18That's why.
07:19Do you know that happened for real?
07:21The people in the room, multiple people in the room reported that.
07:25Is it like recorded on camera?
07:26No, I think it was like a private meeting.
07:30See, you don't even know.
07:31You don't know if it's real or not.
07:32No, you could be.
07:33But that came from the people from the label, though.
07:35You don't know if it's real or not.
07:36You're absolutely right.
07:38You're absolutely right.
07:39That's true.
07:40But, you know, it's about motivation and it's about, like, a passion for, you know, having the music and being viewed like, you know, he said that he was upset about streaming numbers.
07:53There were, like, a package deal or things like that.
07:56But aside from that, you were handpicked by the boss.
07:59Do you feel like some kind of, like, extra pressure or responsibility?
08:03No, not at all because that's my big brother.
08:05So we just got that connection.
08:06Like, we just connect.
08:07We just vibe out.
08:08Yeah.
08:09The way our connection came about was it wasn't like I was popping and then he just took a hold of me.
08:15I wasn't lit.
08:16You know what I'm saying?
08:17We were just conversing and we continue to work.
08:20That's how brothers work.
08:22So, yeah, I don't feel no pressure at all.
08:25Wild 94.1, the bass party station, Flip Dinero.
08:28A couple things that your fans don't necessarily know about you, something they might not have gotten just from the music.
08:33I love to read a lot.
08:36You love to read?
08:37I love poetry.
08:38Okay.
08:39What do you like to read?
08:40What's on your reading list?
08:42Ten Ways to Manage Self-Emotions.
08:44Okay.
08:44I always emphasize that book because that book is very nutritional.
08:52Is it one of those joints that you've read, like, a couple times?
08:54Yeah, of course, of course.
08:55So what are some, like, key points that you were able to take from that onto you personally and career-wise?
09:01Always remain calm.
09:02Okay.
09:03What I'm saying.
09:04Really?
09:04I always stress calm.
09:06Hmm.
09:06So is that the kind of vibe when you're, like, reading?
09:09Like, you like the self-help or?
09:12Yeah.
09:12Yeah.
09:13Self-help is definitely one of those things.
09:15The Bible, too.
09:16I like the Bible a lot.
09:16Okay.
09:17Are you still active in your church life?
09:19Of course.
09:19Yeah?
09:19I still attend church.
09:21My mom's a heavy church girl.
09:22My father as well, you know what I'm saying?
09:23My little brother and sisters.
09:25I stress on them to go to church.
09:27Church is essential.
09:28Does she ever, or does she still give you heat about lyrical content?
09:32My mom?
09:33Yeah.
09:34Of course.
09:35Like, she should.
09:35That's mom.
09:36She hates it.
09:37Like, I said, yo, I'm smoking weed in the spot.
09:39Shit is hot.
09:40She hates it.
09:40Shit like that.
09:41Yeah.
09:41But that's what it is.
09:42Mom knows best, right?
09:43She knows what it is.
09:44How do your fans and how do everybody stay in contact with you?
09:48Via social media on F-L-I-P-P-D-I-N-E-R-O.
09:52You can follow me on all DSPs, all streaming platforms, everything.
09:56Flip DeNero's Wild 94.1, my man, is not stopping.
09:59This is just the beginning.
10:00Yeah.
10:00It's crazy when you can say half a billion streams, and this is just the beginning.
10:04I didn't even know that.
10:05Yeah.
10:05That's crazy.
10:06That's what I'm saying.
10:07I ain't even know that.
10:07Yeah.
10:07I think you deserve some kind of, like, big plaque.
10:10I know you love plaques or something.
10:12Something big to hang up at the crib, because that's a hell of an accomplishment.
10:16Keep going.
10:16Just got to keep growing.
10:17Absolutely, man.
10:18Check out my man.
10:18New music, new videos on the way.
10:20If I tell you, that shit is out.
10:21Tiana Taylor.
10:22Check it out now.
10:23If I tell you, Flip DeNero, Wild 94.1.
10:25Flip.
