00:00I'm gonna show you how to make creamy, buttery
00:02garlic mashed potatoes.
00:04Check this out.
00:10Hey everybody, it's Natasha of natashaskitchen.com.
00:14Garlic mashed potatoes are definitely special enough
00:17for Thanksgiving dinner,
00:18but it's easy enough to make tonight.
00:21And I'm gonna show you how to make it.
00:22It's so simple, let's get started.
00:26You'll need four pounds of potatoes
00:29and by the way, by the way, wait a minute.
00:32If you haven't already, make sure to subscribe
00:33to our channel for more great recipes and tips.
00:37So we're using Yukon Gold Potatoes.
00:40These are a waxier potato and they come out super creamy
00:44and they have just this natural buttery flavor to them.
00:47That's why they're my favorite for these garlic potatoes.
00:51First, rinse them, then peel.
00:54Peel the skins away from you going around the potato
00:57and making sure to remove any dark spots.
01:00There's two kinds of potato peelers,
01:02this standard type or a Y shape.
01:05I'll link to my favorite peeler in the notes,
01:07but I'd love to hear about which kind you use.
01:10Once the potatoes are peeled,
01:12you do wanna keep them in cold water.
01:14This'll keep the potatoes from browning
01:16and removes excess starch.
01:21Cut the potatoes into halves or quarters
01:23if the potatoes are very large.
01:26Once the potatoes are all chopped,
01:28you're gonna drain that water
01:29and transfer the potatoes to a pot.
01:34I prefer using a stainless steel pot
01:37for cooking mashed potatoes
01:38because I can cook and mash them all in the same pot.
01:41Add enough cold water to the pot to cover the potatoes.
01:49Bring that to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer
01:52and continue cooking for about 15 to 18 minutes
01:56or until your potatoes are easily pierced with a fork.
01:59This can take more or less time
02:01depending on how large you cut up your potatoes.
02:05When your potatoes are close to being done,
02:08peel and smash six garlic cloves.
02:12Smash the garlic with the side of a knife
02:14and transfer them to a small sauce pan.
02:20Add one and a third cups of whole milk
02:22and I like using whole milk
02:23to add some richness to the potatoes,
02:25but you can use any kind of milk.
02:28Place that over medium low heat, stirring occasionally,
02:31and continue cooking just until you see steam,
02:34then take it off the heat.
02:35You don't wanna boil the milk.
02:37The potatoes should be just about done.
02:40You can see they're easily pierced with a fork,
02:42so it's time to drain those potatoes.
02:45Make sure the potatoes are really well-drained
02:47and if they seem very moist to you,
02:49you can place them over very low heat on the stove
02:52while you're mashing.
02:54There's several ways to mash these.
02:55You can either use a classic potato masher
02:58or use a potato ricer.
03:01Pressing your potatoes through a ricer
03:03is the best way to ensure you have zero lumps
03:05in your mashed potatoes.
03:07My favorite way to mash up potatoes
03:09is using an electric hand mixer,
03:12but really you can use any method you prefer.
03:15Also, make sure to mash your potatoes right away
03:17while they're hot.
03:19This helps to prevent the potatoes from turning gummy.
03:23Coarsely mash up your potatoes.
03:25They don't have to be perfect at this point.
03:27We're gonna add the steaming hot garlic milk.
03:30I like to use a small strainer to make sure the garlic cloves
03:35don't get into the mashed potatoes
03:36and add the hot milk to your desired consistency.
03:40I add the full one and a third cups of whole milk
03:43for four pounds of potatoes
03:45because I love super creamy mashed potatoes.
03:48Continue mashing the potatoes
03:50until they're fully smooth and creamy, then stop mixing.
03:53You don't wanna over mix your potatoes.
03:55Also use a spatula to scrape the sides and bottom of the pot
03:59to make sure you didn't miss any chunks of potatoes.
04:04To finish the potatoes,
04:05add eight tablespoons of softened unsalted butter,
04:09along with 1 1⁄4 cup of sour cream,
04:12and 1 1⁄2 teaspoons of salt or salt to taste.
04:23All right, once they are whipped and creamy,
04:25they are done and it's time to serve.
04:28And here's a great tip.
04:31If you're not gonna serve these immediately
04:33after you make them,
04:34it's a good idea to mash them up at the stove
04:37over very low heat.
04:38That way the potatoes stay hot and steamy
04:41until you're ready to serve them.
04:43All right.
04:47Little sample for the cook.
04:49Before the taste test, that's what I'm talking about.
04:53All right, just a couple little things for garnish
04:56that will take these potatoes over the top.
04:58Let me show ya.
05:02I'm gonna put them in a serving bowl.
05:08I got the potatoes on.
05:11Here we go.
05:19All right.
05:21Now to garnish this,
05:22because I'm excited for mashed potatoes.
05:24I don't know about you,
05:25but I get this craving for mashed potatoes
05:27that doesn't go away until I make them.
05:30All right, so I love to put on some softened butter
05:33over the top while the potatoes are hot,
05:35so it can kind of melt over the potatoes
05:38and it kind of keeps them from drying out.
05:42All right, here we go.
05:46I just find that little bit of melted butter
05:48over the top of mashed potatoes to be completely irresistible.
05:54Okay, a little more.
05:55Okay, and some freshly chopped chives.
05:59It adds that little pop of color
06:01and chives go really well with garlic and with sour cream,
06:05so it's a really good complimentary flavor.
06:07Lots of chives, and look at that butter
06:10getting all melty in there.
06:11Woo!
06:13I'm excited,
06:14because I get to have some homemade mashed potatoes,
06:17garlic mashed potatoes, and it's time for the taste test.
06:20I'm gonna dive right into this.
06:22While it's hot, creamy, whipped, and buttery.
06:27Really doesn't get any better.
06:28Okay, here we go.
06:29I need a bigger taste test than that.
06:31That's what I'm talking about.
06:32Ha, ha, ha.
06:33Hmm.
06:38Hmm.
06:41Hmm.
06:44Wow.
06:46This has like beautiful garlic flavor
06:48laced throughout the whole thing,
06:49but it's not overpowering.
06:51It's just so much flavor.
06:54Oh, and then you can really taste the butter.
06:55I love using softened butter,
06:57because I feel like it gives the potatoes
06:59more flavor than melting it.
07:02And those chives.
07:05It's such a treat.
07:06Really, just that little bit of garnish
07:08really goes a long way,
07:10and it really brings out the sour cream in the potatoes.
07:12You can taste it.
07:13Even though there's only a quarter cup in here,
07:15it just adds so much amazing flavor.
07:18If you've never added sour cream to your potatoes,
07:20it is a must try.
07:22Oh, these are fabulous.
07:24Oh, they're so good for any special occasion.
07:27Really, they taste like very decadent,
07:30even though there's not a ton of butter in this,
07:32but wow.
07:34Make sure to try this with our Instant Pot chicken and gravy.
07:37The gravy over these mashed potatoes is like next level.
07:41You're gonna love it.
07:42Or these are also really good with our juicy roast turkey
07:46for the holidays.
07:48Oh, wait, one more thing.
07:50These are excellent.
07:52If you have leftovers,
07:53make sure to try our mashed potato pancakes.
07:56They're so good, so easy,
07:57and a genius way to use leftover mashed potatoes.
08:01Okay, I think that's it for now.
08:03I think.
08:04Bye.
