00:00I think I'll be very happy, thank you.
00:05It's my Liberation Day.
00:12Let me first begin by saying I'm thankful for the strong support of the residents in Bishan Topayo in Marymount,
00:20who have elected me to serve five terms as their Member of Parliament,
00:24and also more than 20 years as a Minister in Government.
00:27It's been an honour and privilege to serve my residents and Singaporeans-at-large for five terms.
00:37Leadership succession is a cardinal strength and virtue for the People's Action Party.
00:44In 2011, incumbent MPs and Ministers, who could have continued for more years,
00:52stepped down to make way for new candidates like myself.
00:58It's time for me to do the same.
01:01I had informed Prime Minister Wong Summon's back that it was time for me to continue that virtuous tradition,
01:09to make room for renewal and regeneration of the PAP slate.
01:15I will not be contesting in the next General Elections.
01:20I want to thank the Bishan Topayo and Marymount residents for their trust and faith in me.
01:26After nearly 24 years as your Member of Parliament, we have become good friends and grown older together.
01:34I have watched your children receive awards each year and grow up and shared your joy when grandchildren arrived.
01:45In some families, I had given awards both to the parent and the child.
01:49Now, I specifically, especially want to thank hard-working and committed grassroots volunteers and community leaders.
01:59They serve with their hearts and are the reason why Singapore enjoys harmony and peace.
