Free reusable period products, the Afghan Resettlement Programme and new family hubs are included in this Leeds City Council news round-up.
Transcript
00:00Here's your round-up of five Leeds City Council stories, and first up, the Council have issued a reminder that local elections will not be taking place in Leeds on Thursday 1st May.
00:10As part of the election cycle, there are no local elections held once every four years.
00:15It's called a fallow year, meaning the next local elections will be on Thursday 7th May 2026.
00:21Next, Kirkstall, Armly, Garforth, Pudsey and Morley leisure centres are just some of the venues which will be removing the barrier of periods when being active.
00:31Period Poverty Charity, Freedom 4 Girls and Active Leeds are giving out free, sustainable products at Leeds leisure centres over the next few months, and you can search Active Leeds for more details.
00:42Next, Council leaders have apologised to families for the distress caused by the reversal of plans to close Queensway Primary School in Yeadon, which was earmarked for closure this summer.
00:54The Council said falling pupil numbers meant the school was facing a financial deficit, but legal action was brought as parents raised fears over the welfare of pupils, including those with special needs.
01:06It was the second time the school faced closure since 2022.
01:09Next, families from Afghanistan are due to be settled in Leeds as part of the Afghan Resettlement Programme, which is designed to help people who assisted the UK military in the country.
01:20Around 150 people are expected to settle in the city.
01:24And finally, a series of new family hubs have been launched to bring together a wide range of services for people to access help more easily.
01:32The seven hubs will host key support organisations under one roof, and can be found in Rothwell, Dewsbury Road, Armley, Horsforth, Deakin House, the Compton Centre and Chapel Town Children's Centre.
