00:00:00And he was gonna make sure that that wasn't the case this time if he got him hurt still to come of course the WBC lightweight championship that between Hector Macho Camacho who I'm sure was an interested observer and Cornelius Boza Edwards now that one will be a 12 round fight and I have to think Camacho is gonna go after his man just the same way as Rosario did his I don't think he wants to hang around here for 12 rounds. I think that fight tonight with Rosario was inspirational for Camacho we should see a very aggressive Hector Camacho tonight.
00:00:29I really wonder what Camacho's feelings are as regards fighting Rosario and I think he really wanted to fight Bramble because I think he really felt well I can beat this guy he's an unknown quantity. Rosario is a known quantity.
00:00:40Well it's like being in there like I was in there with Roberto Durena first time I knew fully well the second time around would be rougher but fortunately it wasn't.
00:00:48So Camacho I'm sure as we mentioned a most interested observer we may try to get some of his comments about this fight.
00:00:57And he's gonna have to go out there now and do to Cornelius Boza Edwards what Edwin Rosario just did to Livingstone Bramble and there is a little bit of question as to the conditioning of Hector Camacho.
00:01:10Well Camacho had a weight problem at one time eight pounds he had to take off in two weeks and that could prove to be a factor here with Bozo Edwards because Bozo is a slow puncher slower foot and it may give him a better chance.
00:01:23And Edwards is a guy who usually comes on in the middle of rounds that's when he's really most effective he's not a particularly fast starter that would serve Camacho well you'd have to think.
00:01:31Well I think again Camacho is a young man so the weight might not hurt him if not he should be able to mesmerize Bozo with his hand and foot speed.
00:01:38You know Hector Camacho now is he what's what's going through his mind right now is he thinking yes I'd like to have another shot at Rosario or do you think he respects the man enough that there's just that little element of doubt we've talked about those little intangibles.
00:01:50You think he might have that little element of doubt about Rosario they're always intangibles in fact I think here because Rosario is so impressive Barry he looked great but fantastic that's going through Camacho's mind but Camacho has to stick to his plan with Bozo Edwards.
00:02:06We talked about the fact that this has become one of the toughest and most competitive divisions in the sport of boxing and while we're seeing four of the best there's a lot of other interested observers here and Larry Merchant right now is with one of them Larry.
00:02:19We talked earlier about how many good lightweights there are we're out there and at least three of the best four in the world are on this card and here is the fourth and now after this fight the third Jimmy Paul the IBF champion.
00:02:33What were your thoughts about Rosario tonight Jimmy.
00:02:36I always knew that Rosario it's the kind of point it could upset Bramwell because of the style that Bramwell carried.
00:02:42Rosario you know I thought that Bramwell I had Bramwell to win the fight but I didn't think that you know it would happen that quick Rosario to knock him out but I knew that Rosario had the power and had the talent to knock Bramwell out.
00:02:53Were you surprised that Bramwell really wasn't able to rough him around and also that he didn't show any of his defensive prowess.
00:03:01No he didn't.
00:03:02I watched very close when they came in the ring and I noticed Bramwell didn't have a sweat a drop of sweat on him and that's something that a fighter should always do warm up before a fight and that's something that he didn't do.
00:03:12He came in different this time to me for some reason.
00:03:14You think he might have been overconfident.
00:03:17Yes he did.
00:03:18He did a bad thing.
00:03:19He ran across the ring early and I think that I don't know the bell had rung or what had happened at the time but I think that he just was over anxious and then too he won the first round I gave him the first round and second round he came out like if though he had lost the first round and he fought like on a defensive fight.
00:03:37Jimmy we've been talking a lot about unifying the title WBA WBC you haven't been mentioned in this scenario.
00:03:46How do you feel about that.
00:03:48I feel that I should be mentioned and I should be into this box off because I've fought the best fighters.
00:03:54I fought Blake, Gannigan, Arroyo, Alvin Hayes, Cubanito Perez, Daryl Tyson I just revenged my loss what four weeks ago and I fought the best quality fighter.
00:04:04And everybody out knows boxing that I have fought the better fighters and they have been denying me but I think with Rosario and Camacho and I still feel that I'm the best lightweight in the world.
00:04:14Thank you Jimmy.
00:04:15The scenario with Rosario may well indeed include Jimmy Paul as well as Hector Camacho in the near future.
00:04:24Back to ringside.
00:04:27Well let's put Jimmy Paul into this mix for just a moment Ray.
00:04:30Jimmy Paul is a guy who is the IBF champion.
00:04:32Everybody knows that he's a pretty solid fighter.
00:04:34Where does he work into this whole mix with the Brambles and the Rosarios and the Camachos and maybe even the Bose Edwards.
00:04:41There's no question about it he's right in there and it's almost like two media was about to collide.
00:04:46It's inevitable it has to happen and I can't wait for it.
00:04:49What do you think right now or who do you think I should say is the most effective lightweight around the guy who can go the furthest.
00:04:55It's tough to say because you saw what happened tonight with Rosario and Bramble.
00:05:00It's so unpredictable because each guy carries power, carries speed, talent.
00:05:04It's hard to say.
00:05:05Now what do you do if you're Jimmy Paul?
00:05:06You kind of sit back and you watch how the cards fall between Rosario and Camacho or you see what Camacho does and this is all assuming he gets by Bose Edwards.
00:05:13What he does is in terms of staying in his division or stepping up.
00:05:16Go right back to the gym and start working out.
00:05:18That's the only thing to do.
00:05:20Hector Camacho as he mentioned right now now he's watched Rosario and he's the kind of guy by his own admission he says I got a big ego.
00:05:27He said it's showtime.
00:05:28He says and I'm the dancer and I play the drums the same time.
00:05:31He's got to play the drums a little bit better tonight than Edwin Rosario does to be as pleasing to this crowd and that's really an important thing for Camacho.
00:05:39Well because of Camacho's little ego he hates to be upstaged and I'm sure he's going to try to put on an impressive performance.
00:05:45Hopefully he won't go overboard and do too much and get shocked by this kid.
00:05:51So it might be an interesting fight here.
00:05:53Alright well as we mentioned for Hector Macho Camacho this fight was billed as the preamble to Bramble.
00:05:59Hold all bets.
00:06:00That's changed greatly.
00:06:01That's not the score anymore.
00:06:03As Larry Merchant mentioned it's the scenario to Rosario and what's going through the mind of the man on stage next.
00:06:11Well you can tell everyone I'm a dumb disgrace.
00:06:17Drag my name all over the place.
00:06:21I don't care anymore.
00:06:23And a right hand by Rosario who moves in for the kill.
00:06:27You can tell everybody by the state I'm in.
00:06:31You won't catch me crying cause I just can't win.
00:06:34I don't care anymore.
00:06:36Hey I just got rocked with a good shot.
00:06:40So he kinda with a right hand.
00:06:42He kinda again and again and again.
00:06:45I don't care what you say.
00:06:51I don't play the same games you play.
00:06:58Cause I been talking to the people that you call their friends.
00:07:02And it seems to me there's a means to an end.
00:07:05They don't care anymore.
00:07:07Camacho trying to survive.
00:07:09Rosario trying to put him away.
00:07:11And you're gonna tell me how hard Rosario hit.
00:07:14Or if he knocks a building down.
00:07:16But boy I must be a building cause he hit me with 20 shots.
00:07:20Not with 20, with 30.
00:07:22And I was able to survive the round like a true champion.
00:07:24I won't be there anymore.
00:07:25Get out of my way.
00:07:26Let me by.
00:07:27I got a better thing to do with my time.
00:07:30I don't care anymore.
00:07:31I don't care anymore.
00:07:32I don't care anymore.
00:07:33The winner by the Chinese Republican.
00:07:34Hector, Hector, Hector, Hector.
00:07:35You know people will say well it was a close fight.
00:07:49Well it wasn't a close fight.
00:07:51It was just a war.
00:07:53You wanna say war?
00:07:54That's the way boxing is supposed to be.
00:07:56Vegas, Nevada.
00:07:57He's wily.
00:07:58He's been around.
00:07:59Been around more than Hector Macho Camacho.
00:08:01Ray, we talked to Camacho.
00:08:02We talked to Edwards during this past week.
00:08:04Camacho by his own admission said well I didn't train very well for the last fight.
00:08:07Remember he was chopping wood and he told us then.
00:08:09That's exactly what I need to do.
00:08:10It gives him more punching power.
00:08:11Well he said it gave him more punching power.
00:08:13But it allowed him just to keep his head up straight.
00:08:16And that's what caused Rosario to be able to get in with the left hands.
00:08:19Now what about this time around?
00:08:20He's gotta change things.
00:08:21Well I don't know.
00:08:22I think the fact that Camacho stated he trained himself.
00:08:25It's tough to train himself because sometimes you need additional motivation.
00:08:29And with Monte Cola that helps Camacho a great deal.
00:08:32But I think this time around he's facing a totally different type of fighter.
00:08:35He can't really get too careless with Bozo Edwards because Bozo is very determined.
00:08:39And like tonight, things happen in boxing.
00:08:41In one word, can Bozo Edwards win the fight?
00:08:44I'll tell you one thing, he has a puncher's chance.
00:08:47That's the only thing I can say about Bozo Edwards.
00:08:49That's about 17 words.
00:08:50Let's go back up top now to Larry Merchant and his comments on this fight.
00:08:55After Hector Camacho's hardest fight with Edwin Rosario, and we sure know now why that was such a hard fight, Camacho's girlfriend said to him that his face looked like a cabbage patch doll.
00:09:08And his son said to him that he was lucky to be alive.
00:09:11After all of that, Camacho got into his Corvette alone and took a long leisurely drive from New York to his hideaway in Florida.
00:09:21The idea was to get away from the tumult and the shouting, to reassess what had happened to him and to map plans for the future.
00:09:29And the point of all that is that beyond the glitter and the sequins and the flash dance, that Hector Camacho is a committed athlete and a prideful athlete and a very, very ambitious athlete.
00:09:43And he usually takes care of business.
00:09:48Tonight he's here to take care of business again, and we want to see how, after that hard fight and those hard knocks, he does take care of business.
00:09:58113 for Rosario, 115 for Camacho, the winner by majority!
00:10:04Many people thought this result was an early Christmas gift for Hector Camacho.
00:10:08Suspect preparation for this fight added to the confusion on the return to training camp.
00:10:15Last time I had to work chopping trees, I didn't really get to working.
00:10:19My sparring partners wasn't, they wasn't the time to make me move and move my head and move the ring.
00:10:24Like when I fought Ramirez, I had so much good sparring partners that they forced me to move around the ring.
00:10:30And I was able to maneuver myself around the ring.
00:10:32The result if I was more straight up, I wasn't really moving my head, backing up kind of lazy and straight.
00:10:38Which I was, you know, crashing into some right hands that he was doing.
00:10:42So the only time that he really got to hurt me was with the left hand when I stood straight up in the row, which normally I never do.
00:10:50The defection of trainer Jimmy Montoya to Rosario's corner left sparring partner Felix Pintor in Camacho's corner.
00:10:56Hector was overwhelmed.
00:10:58I didn't know he was going to work in my corner.
00:11:00I could have put my son to work in the corner.
00:11:02I did it all by myself.
00:11:04Oh, I did the whole training all by myself, against all odds.
00:11:07I was supposed to get knocked out.
00:11:09Ian stepped advisor Marty Cohen.
00:11:11So that when you have a type of individual like Hector Camacho or any champion,
00:11:18he should have the best of everything in his corner.
00:11:21Three are allowed in the corner, one down below.
00:11:23The revolving door continues in Camacho's corner.
00:11:26Pintor is out.
00:11:27Ian is Chuck Talhami, a respected trainer whose low-key approach will hopefully offset Camacho's volatility.
00:11:33He believes in chopping trees, but I believe that chopping trees is when he has no fight.
00:11:38He can go and keep his body in some kind of a shape.
00:11:42But I believe to develop power, you have to use the muscles the way you use them in the ring.
00:11:47He calls out a few shots that really ring to my belt that I thought about.
00:11:51You know, sometimes I go, Dan, I'm backing up too straight. I'm not doing this.
00:11:55And Chuck's cornered those shots, which it proves to me that, yes, he is.
00:12:00He does got his eyes open.
00:12:02And that's all I need, an extra eye over my shoulder.
00:12:06Perhaps he has more help than he's willing to admit,
00:12:09like sparring with welterweight Joe Baker, who has specific instructions.
00:12:14I be trying to knock his head off. I'm not gonna lie and say that I don't, you know.
00:12:20And I got the power to hurt him.
00:12:23And I be trying to hurt him every time.
00:12:25And every time I see this man taking my stuff, it lets me know that he's for real.
00:12:31He is the macho man.
00:12:33Ain't no lightweight in the world that can mess with this man.
00:12:37If Camacho has trouble with Boza Edwards, there'll be sound advice from his corner.
00:12:41Unlike his last fight.
00:12:43I give him a pep talk. You almost always give a fighter a pep talk.
00:12:46Show him how great he is. Show him his good points and his opponent's weak points.
00:12:50Never mention the word tired in the corner.
00:12:52Never talk negative in the corner.
00:12:54A stable influence in Camacho's corner is essential.
00:12:57If you have an amateur, or amateurs working in a corner,
00:13:01whether it be a champion, or a coming champion,
00:13:04or even a kid coming out of the amateurs and turning pro,
00:13:08if you don't have a pro in that corner,
00:13:11that's the difference between winning or losing the fight.
00:13:14His opponent tonight, Cornelius Boza Edwards,
00:13:18started his boxing career in Kampala, Uganda at age 11,
00:13:22under the guidance of English businessman Jack Edwards.
00:13:25When Edwards was expelled from Uganda in a purge of Europeans
00:13:28by the murderous Idi Amin, he went home to London penniless.
00:13:32Cornelius followed his mentor a year later with his parents' blessing.
00:13:35There was no future at home.
00:13:37Cornelius took Jack's surname in appreciation for his help in London.
00:13:41He had a promising future in pro boxing,
00:13:43until the death of his young wife left him contemplating suicide.
00:13:47I had a little daughter to support, and I was good at boxing,
00:13:50and I realized, hey, you know, one or the other, I've got to make it for her.
00:13:54And, you know, there's only me now in her.
00:13:57I've got to find my life again.
00:13:59Otherwise, she's just going to end up on the streets or absolutely with nothing.
00:14:04George Francis, a popular English trainer, saw potential in the young man,
00:14:08but was uncertain of his will to carry on.
00:14:11Francis has been in Boza's corner ever since.
00:14:14Over 50 fights.
00:14:16Most notably, a title victory over Raphael Bazooka Limon.
00:14:25He successfully defended his title against Bobby Chacon,
00:14:29who lost to the same man two years later in a brutal fight.
00:14:34He has since relocated to Las Vegas, remarried with two more daughters,
00:14:38and is facing another challenge.
00:14:41As we were having difficulties with the weight at 130 pounds,
00:14:46so I'd moved up to 135 pounds,
00:14:49and I found myself very comfortable at this weight.
00:14:52And this is where we are, that we've actually gained a shot at Hector Macho Man,
00:14:59and it's going to be a wonderful fight.
00:15:02Undefeated with one draw at his new weight,
00:15:04Boza has benefited from the consistent guidance in his corner.
00:15:07But for this fight, perhaps his last hurrah,
00:15:09Francis remained in England due to his wife's illness.
00:15:12That left Boza to train in the Catskills with Francis' friend,
00:15:15and ex-featherweight champion of Great Britain, Bobby Neal,
00:15:18with a new tactic.
00:15:20In London, we are hook-and-jab pads.
00:15:23And I try as much as possible I can to imitate the Hector's style of attack,
00:15:29and I throw punches at Boza the same way.
00:15:33And he blocks up, you know, and blocks up and comes off with a reply himself.
00:15:38This has been working very successfully.
00:15:40George Francis will fly in, especially to be in Cornelius' corner,
00:15:43but what knowledge can Neal add to the 60-second break?
00:15:47In the heat of a moment, this man's got 60 seconds,
00:15:50and if you throw lots of ideas at the man,
00:15:53you can't take them all in because his body is in a high state of tension.
00:15:59You give him a few seconds to relax, get his breathing back to normal,
00:16:03get some oxygen into his body, and then you pick out two or three points.
00:16:07Boza will get a big lip from that familiar face in his corner.
00:16:11Unlike Camacho's corner, Boza has a consistent edge,
00:16:14and if he wins, some simple hopes.
00:16:17I'll be dissatisfied with this one and sit comfortably enough and sit at my house
00:16:23and play with my kids and tie the belt round and say,
00:16:29you've done it, Dad.
00:16:32So look at Cornelius Boza-Edwards.
00:16:34He's the challenger and the champion, Hector Macho Camacho.
00:16:38Boza-Edwards, kind of a low-key guy, but you have the feeling he's the kind of guy
00:16:42maybe just kind of laying back in the weeds.
00:16:45Well, you know, this is the first time I've done a fight on clay courts.
00:16:49That's right.
00:16:51And in that first fight, what was so unconventional about it was both fighters came to the net,
00:16:56and they were volleying, you know?
00:16:58And here in this fight, we have more of a classical confrontation
00:17:02in which we're going to have a baseliner and a net player,
00:17:05and sometimes it can be dangerous coming to the net on clay,
00:17:10as far as Boza is concerned.
00:17:12And he is the guy who's going to have to serve and volley, if you will.
00:17:17Cornelius Boza-Edwards.
00:17:19First time in a week that I've seen him really have that serious expression.
00:17:22He's a real likable kind of guy, very loose.
00:17:25He's been in there against some pretty good competition.
00:17:30You think he's got a drop shot in him for Camacho?
00:17:34I quit. That's it.
00:17:35That was all right, man.
00:17:36That was the pick of the litter right there.
00:17:41So Boza-Edwards starts toward the ring here.
00:17:44Very quiet reception by this crowd at Miami Beach.
00:17:48He's a gentleman.
00:17:59First time in my life when I was in a fighter's apartment before the fight,
00:18:04he had a textbook on one of the tables on electronics.
00:18:08He goes to a college in Las Vegas
00:18:11studying automobile mechanics and electronics.
00:18:15As you can see, he has been around, been around for 50 fights,
00:18:18144 of them, has five losses.
00:18:21The draw, incidentally, was in his last fight with Terence Ali.
00:18:24He has 34 knockouts.
00:18:26So he can punch.
00:18:27Now, whether he can punch against the likes of Macho Camacho
00:18:30remains to be seen.
00:18:32He's sad about Camacho that he runs.
00:18:34He said he's not a pressure fighter, so he's not too worried about it.
00:18:37And he seems to feel that Camacho's Achilles, if you will,
00:18:41is his stamina, and that has been talked about.
00:18:44As a lightweight since stepping up.
00:18:47His record, six love, and the one draw.
00:18:57He felt, and I guess this is normally the case,
00:18:59but he did feel that that draw with Terence Ali at worst
00:19:02should have been a split decision in his favor.
00:19:05He felt he won the fight.
00:19:07He is an action fighter, and Camacho's style is made for him,
00:19:15for whatever that means.
00:19:17Rosa Edwards jumping up from junior lightweight to lightweight,
00:19:20and here are the people who did it before.
00:19:22Kid Chocolate came up to fight Tony Canzaneri.
00:19:24He lost.
00:19:25Flashy Lorde losing to Carlos Ortiz on a couple of occasions.
00:19:32Carlos Ortiz was another Puerto Rican lightweight champion
00:19:35and one of the best fighters I ever saw.
00:19:39Yoshiaki Numada had a tough time with Mondo Ramos,
00:19:42and Alexis Arguello was here at a 15-round victory over James Watt.
00:19:47Hector Camacho, as you see, the 12-round victory over Jose Luis Ramirez.
00:19:54Camacho now talking about moving up a division
00:19:58and, of course, playing one of the games that fighters and football teams
00:20:02both have in common, keeping the opponent, the visitor, in the ring.
00:20:07If ever such a tactic was futile, it certainly is against Boza Edwards,
00:20:12who has been around since the 1976 Olympics.
00:20:16In fact, Barry, you know, he was in Montreal for the Olympics
00:20:19with the Ugandan Olympic team,
00:20:21and when they pulled out of the Olympics for political purposes,
00:20:25there went his chance at a gold medal.
00:20:28We asked Edwards about what he needs to do to win this fight,
00:20:32and he said that he feels that he can hit Camacho
00:20:36when Camacho's at long range.
00:20:37He says, in fact, he said, when he thinks that he's out of range,
00:20:40that's when I'll hit him.
00:20:42You know, before we had the dreadlock issue,
00:20:45now we have the sequin issue,
00:20:47which we've talked about Camacho's sequins of punches,
00:20:52and according to Boza Edwards...
00:20:57Tit for tat, I guess you could say.
00:20:59The sequins from Camacho's trunks sometimes get on his gloves,
00:21:04and they can cut you up.
00:21:06Well, we mentioned earlier...
00:21:07It's a new one on me as well.
00:21:08You mentioned earlier that Camacho came out
00:21:11when Edwin Rosario made his entrance,
00:21:13and now here is Edwin Rosario leading the parade out
00:21:16for Hector Camacho.
00:21:20And now we'll see who gets the most applause.
00:21:22I think Rosario won a lot of friends down here.
00:21:25Little national solidarity never hurt.
00:21:34I think Rosario really earned Camacho's respect in that fight.
00:21:40Basically, Hector Camacho, a very nice guy.
00:21:44He doesn't let you not like him.
00:21:48You know, his trainer or advisor, Marty Cohen,
00:21:52said an interesting thing to me this morning at the weigh-in,
00:21:55which incidentally Camacho showed up for 20 minutes early
00:21:59because he was so hungry from having to lose weight
00:22:02that he wanted to get it over with so he could go and eat.
00:22:07Marty Cohen said to me that the only bad thing left with Camacho
00:22:12were some of his eating habits.
00:22:14That he was a junk food junkie.
00:22:17And that maybe losing a fight somewhere along the way might cure him.
00:22:21Because his walking around weight now is welterweight weight.
00:22:27147 or so instead of the 140 or so it was before.
00:22:31And that's why he had to struggle so much to make weight.
00:22:36Yeah, he has made a lot of noises about stepping up one division.
00:22:39And after that performance of Rosario's,
00:22:43I can't help but wonder if that might hasten his decision.
00:22:46Meanwhile, Boza Edwards all by himself in the corner,
00:22:50just kind of waiting for all the ceremony to get over with.
00:22:57Camacho incidentally had told us
00:22:59there wasn't going to be much of the glitter this time,
00:23:01that he was just going to be all business.
00:23:03You've got to be kidding.
00:23:04We'll see, yeah.
00:23:06Well, I'm curious about it because I'm wondering what that last fight had.
00:23:13What kind of impact that last fight had.
00:23:16But I see some...
00:23:18I see something glittering there.
00:23:20Yeah, that's right.
00:23:21He's just telling his handlers to go.
00:23:31Let's get on with it here.
00:23:34Well, he does have the glitter, but he does look all business.
00:23:40Camacho is a performer.
00:23:41He says that by his own admission.
00:23:43And tonight, to be real honest with you, he just looks angry.
00:24:01One of those athletes for whom the playing field is a stage.
00:24:05Nacho time!
00:24:06Nacho time!
00:24:07Nacho time!
00:24:10Nacho time!
00:24:12Macho time!
00:24:15Macho time!
00:24:18The Rosario people are really rooting for Camacho.
00:24:19They want that rematch so bad.
00:24:21After the practices of Camacho Chi-chan pounds.
00:24:22It's not just that perfect.
00:24:24Macho time!
00:24:25Macho time!
00:24:26I think it'll be really an interesting fight.
00:24:28Nacho time!
00:24:29Winning for Camacho!
00:24:30When and if.
00:24:31when and if
00:24:57he hates the camera
00:25:01there's the record of hector camacho 29 up none down 15 knockouts and not a bad dancer
00:25:24here's the look yeah you see the you see the weights all four main eventers had 135 pounds i think the
00:25:31scale was stuck there i think that mike tyson might have come in at 135 on that on that scale
00:25:39close ahead for it's bigger more of a reach we've mentioned on numerous occasions that really
00:25:44doesn't mean all that much camacho says he's going to go side to side again here's some numbers larry
00:25:51when stats numbers to get an idea of how busy these fighters are it doesn't tell you how effective and
00:25:58how hard the punches are that they land remember that a lot of the punches camacho threw at rosario
00:26:05were stay away punches they were little jabs just to keep them off them they weren't effective hard
00:26:10punches and here are those jabs and all the jabs you can see that he throws relative to the numbers of
00:26:17punches he throws
00:26:17and meanwhile the dance goes on well i will tell you about the rules and as you mentioned earlier
00:26:24they're virtually the same as the wbc but we go 12 rounds this time and the three knockdown rule
00:26:29is not in effect ten point my system three judges score the fight no standing eight count friday can
00:26:34be saved with the bell only in the final round those are the wbc rules let's now go to the ring announcer
00:26:40frank freeman will have the free fight introduction let's talk about the odd couple frank freeman and
00:26:44macho camacho
00:26:47ladies and gentlemen we've just had an added slaughter in the ring at the moment is the abc wbc
00:26:57undisputed heavyweight champion of the world trevor burbank burbank
00:27:02this bout ladies and gentlemen is 12 rounds for the wbc lightweight championship the officials have
00:27:15been assigned as supervisor for wbc dwayne ford the judges arsenio garcia barnell
00:27:25brafiel kantaya and vince delgado the timekeeper is sam garalnik counting for the knockdowns
00:27:37richard braver the ring positions jack grossman theodore strew and the referee carlos pidaya
00:27:48the principal in the blue corner wearing white trunks with a black trim
00:28:01weighing 135 pounds from las vegas nevada with a record of 44 5 and 1 including 34 knockouts
00:28:12the number two contender the number two contender of the wbca championship cornelius boza edwards
00:28:27and his opponent in the red corner wearing rainbow trunks weighing 135 pounds with a record of 29 and 0
00:28:370 15 kills wbc lightweight champion hector macho carmacho
00:29:00okay
00:29:05carlos pediglia the referee will give the instructions to the fighters
00:29:15you're going to box for 12 rounds you know the rules
00:29:22okay
00:29:29yeah both of them
00:29:35he's talking about a loose lace on the glove and they'll tape it down that's the reason for the
00:29:41momentary delay here
00:29:43gray i really have the feeling that
00:29:45camacho will go right after boz edwards i think he has to for himself to try to upstage
00:29:52rosario
00:29:53i'm a little skeptical i'm a little skeptical i'd like to believe that because i thought that one of
00:29:58the things he did wrong in the rosario fight was that he used his legs too much to try to win he has
00:30:06great legs great boundless energy but he's got to know when to stop and fight more often let's see if
00:30:12he can go break the box correct that you know the rules of boxing avoid using any kinds of foul don't throw any
00:30:18punches during the break uh rudy fernandez who's the uh chip second okay chip seconds will be
00:30:24responsible for any misbehavior of your assistant second is that understood okay seconds come out fighting
00:30:31yeah rudy fernandez so we're set to go camacho said that the only time he got hurt against rosario
00:30:39was when he was on the rope so one point he made emphatically clear to us is i'm going to stay off
00:30:44the ropes camacho is ready to go to work here he looks very alert very loose it's like a time bomb
00:30:55he said look for more fakes and he feels he can get away with a straight left hand
00:31:02look for more punches here
00:31:14look for more punches here
00:31:27pretty good exchange and camacho got the better of it
00:31:31just a plotter and bozo edwards
00:31:46wants to get his opponent right in front of him to wheel away with those shots
00:31:49that was a great right hand but edwards was really off balance
00:32:00and watch him go to work now barry
00:32:11low blows
00:32:12and still a lot of time minute and 45 seconds and another good left hand by camacho this time
00:32:25another good left hand and bozo edwards is hurt
00:32:30and still has a long way to go halfway through the first round
00:32:33camacho is really trying to load up here so he's trying to miss a couple shots here
00:32:40and he's getting a couple head faints like he mentioned earlier
00:32:42what's he's actually doing he's giving edwards a chance to get back to the fight
00:32:51by missing those very important shots
00:32:54uppercut and bozo edwards goes back again
00:33:06A couple of good body shots also by Camacho.
00:33:17He's very sharp in this first round.
00:33:30Still 30 seconds remaining.
00:33:33Okay, hold it, hold it.
00:33:36Ten seconds remaining, and Boz Edwards will get through this first round.
00:33:57I think we have about a three-minute and 15-second round here.
00:34:11A big round, clearly, for the champion.
00:34:21Very uncharacteristic, and you guys are right.
00:34:23He did come out after him.
00:34:24Good luck, Jad, guys.
00:34:28Good luck, Jad.
00:34:31When he's moved along, he can't hit you with a counter-cache.
00:34:34If you tuck up and go behind on Jad, you'll hit him.
00:34:39And if you don't hit him, you won't be in any trouble.
00:34:41Come on.
00:34:43You got me?
00:34:44Take that.
00:34:44If you don't hit him with a Jad, as long as you're nicely tucked up,
00:34:48and if you Jad, if you hit him, you're fine.
00:34:50If you don't hit him, you won't be in any trouble.
00:34:53You got me?
00:34:53Then you can pick out everything else.
00:34:55But we'll have a look here at what he was up to.
00:34:59You see it as well as I do.
00:35:01And I think, gentlemen, what he's doing here is he's fighting the rematch with Rosario already.
00:35:06He's coming out here to show Rosario that he can fight.
00:35:10He's more than just a runner.
00:35:13You think so, Ray?
00:35:14Well, I think he's trying to demonstrate that he has power and he can stand in there.
00:35:18But he could be making a mistake here, though.
00:35:19I honestly believe he can make a mistake by getting too careless here.
00:35:25He can stick to his fight plan.
00:35:26Use his speed and his mobility.
00:35:29I think also he knows that he's not in the best condition of his life.
00:35:32And I think he wants to hurry this thing up and get it over with.
00:35:34But you notice that Edwards has a pretty good chin.
00:35:38He was able to get up.
00:35:38He was hit by a solid left hand of Camacho.
00:35:40Yeah, and by the end of the round, he had his legs under him pretty good.
00:35:49I don't so much mean to say that Camacho is not in great condition.
00:36:01What I really mean more is just the fact that he's had to lose that weight and lose it in a short period of time.
00:36:06So there's no telling how much he's got in the tank.
00:36:09Just for the record, also, in our HBO remote truck, we clocked that first round at 3 minutes and 25 seconds.
00:36:24But things move a little slower down here in Miami.
00:36:26What they want from Bozal Edwards, his corner, instructing him to fire back.
00:36:32Because quite naturally, while he's firing back, there's a chance on a swimmer of Camacho dominating the round.
00:36:39It takes people down here an hour and a half to watch 60 minutes.
00:36:49Bozal backs Camacho up with a right hand.
00:36:52Wasn't a big punch.
00:36:53It's hard to see whether or not the weight plays a role here until later in the round.
00:36:59Because what happens, he becomes lethargic.
00:37:01Hands, arms become heavy.
00:37:03You don't see too much foot movement by Camacho if that weight, losing that weight is a problem here.
00:37:10Also, with Edwards, that could make a good right hook.
00:37:14He needs to keep pressuring the fight.
00:37:17He has to make Camacho work.
00:37:19Use up that energy.
00:37:23That was a quick combination by Camacho.
00:37:32In and out of the combination.
00:37:36And a left hand by Bozal Edwards.
00:37:41Camacho eyes open it real wide.
00:37:43He sees it.
00:37:44It was just real.
00:37:44And now Camacho showing Edwards a little bit of respect.
00:37:55That was Bozal Edwards' round.
00:38:21He's talking to this guy's brain dog.
00:38:25He talks real protective.
00:38:26Listen.
00:38:26The fool won't fake him.
00:38:28Fake him and then jab.
00:38:29Jab him right up against the body.
00:38:31Right up against the body.
00:38:32You're floating towards his left.
00:38:33Right up against the body.
00:38:34All right?
00:38:35I don't want that jab.
00:38:36Fake for a jab.
00:38:36All right?
00:38:37Fake jab.
00:38:38Jab.
00:38:39Jab.
00:38:39Huh?
00:38:42New Brad head nice.
00:38:43You're doing beautiful.
00:38:44You're boxing this guy.
00:38:45You're making the guy terrible.
00:38:45You're boxing beautiful.
00:38:46Just keep boxing.
00:38:47You're going to get frustrated.
00:38:48If you keep feeding him with a jab, even if you're not hitting him, you're keeping him
00:38:55off balance and you'll be able to hit him without a shot.
00:38:56You're going to go.
00:39:03So both corners think they're doing well.
00:39:05Even nice.
00:39:07Keep it up.
00:39:07Even chances.
00:39:08You're moving your head, baby.
00:39:09Keep giving the feet.
00:39:10You're fucking for some feet.
00:39:11Let's go now.
00:39:11Fake him.
00:39:12Fake him jab.
00:39:13All right, Hector?
00:39:14Then nail him with jab.
00:39:14The right uppercuts.
00:39:15I want these right uppercuts now.
00:39:17Make a miss like you're doing it.
00:39:18Let's see if it can be done as easily as it can be said.
00:39:23It's always a lot easier in the corners.
00:39:34In Camacho's corner, they told him to uppercut to the body.
00:39:36We'll see if he can do it.
00:39:37A wild right hand.
00:39:39Look it up.
00:39:39Watch it.
00:39:41Hey!
00:39:42Hey, say, look it up.
00:39:43Hey.
00:39:45Hey.
00:39:45Hey.
00:39:45Hey.
00:39:46Hey.
00:39:46Hey.
00:39:47Hey.
00:39:48Hey.
00:39:48Hey.
00:39:49How you doing?
00:39:50I don't know, Ray.
00:39:51It looks like there's a little bit of, I don't know if it's confusion.
00:39:54I can't quite put my finger on what I see in Camacho's eyes.
00:39:57But it's not confidence.
00:39:59Well, he's hit Bozell with some pretty good shots.
00:40:02They would put him down in the first round.
00:40:03But Bozell Edwards, weather the stormer came back with some shots of his own.
00:40:07I think what Camacho's corner want from him is a little frustration.
00:40:11He wants to see, they want to see a huge answer from Camacho.
00:40:14Loosen up Edwards and connect with his left hand.
00:40:18You notice the crowd now is chaining foot, Bozo Edwards.
00:40:21A little fickle here, I would say.
00:40:23I'd say so.
00:40:25And the underdog in boxing has always been a crowd favorite.
00:40:28Good right hand by Camacho immediately right on top of Bozo Edwards.
00:40:37Good try again by Camacho.
00:40:51What is Edwards really punching from the outside in?
00:41:09I don't know, is that an effective tactic against Camacho?
00:41:12Well, that's the only way he's going to be able to connect with some punches
00:41:14because Camacho is so extraordinarily fast.
00:41:17So you have to catch him on the outside, most of the inside.
00:41:25Try to catch those hands down.
00:41:30Bozo Edwards said that Camacho is a runner,
00:41:32and that's what he's done the last two rounds.
00:41:35He's ducked in with a couple of flurries and ducked out.
00:41:38Gotten on his bicycle.
00:41:39A long, a long time by Bozo Edwards,
00:41:57who's going to take a point from him.
00:41:58He's coming, he was going to be able to deliver them.
00:42:01Oh
00:42:03Oh
00:42:05Oh
00:42:07Well, it's half by it, boys.
00:42:30Harold Letterman, our unofficial, official fight official.
00:42:34How do you see the fight through the first three rounds?
00:42:36Well, Larry, I gave the first three rounds to Hector Camacho.
00:42:40Of course, I gave him an extra point for the knockdown in the first round.
00:42:43Cornelius Boza Edwards is chasing Hector Camacho around the ring,
00:42:47but Hector Camacho is landing the clean, effective punches,
00:42:49and on the basis of the clean, effective punches,
00:42:52I scored the first three rounds for Hector Camacho.
00:42:56Are you ready, everyone?
00:42:58Otherwise, it's great.
00:42:59Great.
00:42:59That's it.
00:42:59That's it.
00:43:00That's it.
00:43:00That's it.
00:43:03Okay.
00:43:04You can start putting pressure on.
00:43:05You can start putting pressure on later.
00:43:09It might mean while you're going good.
00:43:11Just keep boxing.
00:43:13You're boxing great.
00:43:14Come on, come on.
00:43:19Well, in Boza Edwards' corner,
00:43:20they were saying, put the pressure on later.
00:43:22So, obviously, the strategy there
00:43:24is to try to come on in the later rounds,
00:43:26and he walked right into a good left hand,
00:43:28did Boza Edwards.
00:43:36In Camacho's corner,
00:43:38they feel it's too dangerous now to go in.
00:43:40It's too early, too premature to go in there
00:43:42because Edwards is starting to throw some punches of his own
00:43:44and putting a lot of power behind him.
00:43:59Boza Edwards is doing a good job cutting the ring off.
00:44:04Moving from side to side.
00:44:07Because, see, normally, Barry,
00:44:08Camacho uses the entire ring,
00:44:10and normally, fighters may have a habit
00:44:11of following the final round.
00:44:14What you need to do is step to the right,
00:44:16make the ring smaller and smaller.
00:44:20Boza Edwards missed the right hook.
00:44:22The strategy of Boza Edwards, obviously,
00:44:32to try to catch him in the later rounds.
00:44:34Again, Camacho ducks in with a flurry
00:44:36and then gets out of there.
00:44:37I don't think Camacho likes it there
00:44:39to the body, either.
00:44:40Some pretty good shots thrown by Edwards.
00:44:42I'm curious to see whether or not
00:44:54this weight of Camacho's is a problem here
00:44:56because, normally, a lot of those punches
00:44:58thrown by Edwards, Camacho would have countered.
00:45:02A lot of those wild winging shots thrown by Edwards,
00:45:04Camacho would have normally countered off those shots.
00:45:06And conditioning could really become a factor in this fight.
00:45:08The longer it goes on...
00:45:10Long left hand, off-balance left hand, though.
00:45:21Camacho can't afford to become stationary
00:45:24because that's when Edwards gets hits punches off.
00:45:29Northway, Camacho, Kelly, there.
00:45:32Great hand speed.
00:45:40Now, Camacho just clearly gets his punches off faster.
00:45:48Tactical fight so far for Hector Camacho.
00:45:50the
00:45:53home view.
00:46:01November 2nd!
00:46:14the macho did exactly what he wanted to do in that round whether that's enough to be
00:46:30impressive in this fight remains to be seen okay because if you hit him to the head he's
00:46:34right aim your left straight up to the upper chest you're frustrating this guy he's slow motion
00:46:49you're frustrating this guy like crazy he doesn't know what to do with you make sure when you jab
00:46:57go straight back to the upper chest then aim to the head good one too beautiful there you see
00:47:06the jab stats aim is straight to the upper chest and then come up with right upper chest beautiful
00:47:27no question but the camacho gets punches off quickly those edwards probably could do more
00:47:47damage with his but hasn't had a good shot at camacho who's there and then he's not
00:47:51camacho successfully doing what he said he needed to do and that is stay off the ropes
00:48:08well he's making good use of that left that right jab rather because camacho is a southpaw
00:48:15he's making good use of it that was a good right hand by camacho again as he just stepped in
00:48:21camacho not wasting any unnecessary energy which also makes me believe that uh he's not as strong
00:48:30as he used to be because of the weight problems camacho had boza edwards down in the first round
00:48:42tried to put him away and then rosario got his rather uh close edwards got his legs back under him
00:48:47camacho was contentious to build up the points which he did
00:48:50there's a good right hook by boza edwards
00:48:55so
00:49:01five
00:49:09Macho walked right into a right hand, but Rose Edwards didn't quite get it off quick enough.
00:49:39Rose Edwards can't really get set because Camacho's moving so well here.
00:49:44Camacho's not throwing too many punches, but he's just using those legs.
00:49:52And this is the fifth round. We're going 12. WBC rules.
00:50:01And Camacho's just getting his punches off quicker. That's really the bottom line so far.
00:50:09The crowd wants a little more action.
00:50:19I don't know if Camacho is frustrating Bo's Edwards, but he's starting to frustrate the crowd.
00:50:27He's starting to frustrate me.
00:50:31I wish he would do a little bit more fighting and a little less running.
00:50:36I'm looking beautiful.
00:50:40Here's the first round, so let's go back and look at where the fighting was in this fight.
00:50:46As Camacho came out blazing.
00:50:50The man who can throw punches that quickly, Ray, I would think would do that more often.
00:50:56Well, quite naturally he has the advantage in hand speed, but for some reason he's holding back.
00:51:02Oh, he's reserving.
00:51:03He's getting very excited over there.
00:51:04He's getting very excited over there.
00:51:05He's getting very excited over there.
00:51:11Good, strong hijack.
00:51:12And a good, strong jab.
00:51:14He can follow a nice, great look.
00:51:15Let's keep up.
00:51:16Let's keep up.
00:51:17And that was Mickey Duff speaking in the corner of Cornelius Boza Edwards saying they're getting excited in Camacho's corner.
00:51:32Saying that as encouragement to his fighter.
00:51:34Mickey Duff himself possessor a pretty good jab.
00:51:37Scored with a sharp jab at the back of one of our cameras in London.
00:51:40That was Boza Edwards, perhaps his best shot.
00:52:00That punch that of course Camacho only on his gloves, Barry.
00:52:03But he threw that punch with good intentions.
00:52:05Body shots by Boza Edwards.
00:52:17Either man is marked.
00:52:18This is the sixth round.
00:52:22Oh, again, good combination by Camacho.
00:52:31Camacho trying to turn this into a street fight right at the moment.
00:52:35Camacho just tied this man up.
00:52:36This type of fight with Camacho's doing frustrates fighters.
00:52:51It really makes them lose their cool.
00:52:53And I wouldn't be surprised if Camacho's trying to do just that.
00:52:55Camacho said when he was fighting on the street.
00:52:59He said on the street you could bite, you could hit the man in the back of the head, you could throw garbage cans.
00:53:04He said when you get in the ring, you've got to fight by the rules.
00:53:08That's it.
00:53:09I'm right here.
00:53:10I'm right here.
00:53:12I'm right here.
00:53:13Aw, man.
00:53:14I'm right here.
00:53:17And I'm right here.
00:53:18He's right here.
00:53:19CONGREGATIONS
00:53:49Punching right hand by Camacho and he bounces off the ropes.
00:53:56Every time his back touches the ropes, it's almost as though somebody's pushing him off of there.
00:54:05This one has been a bit of a horse race here, not much of a fight.
00:54:19The crowd reacting as you might expect they would.
00:54:22Not a great fight so far.
00:54:26Well, a history of sorts being made here tonight by the Goodyear Blip,
00:54:30which for the first time in its 62-year history is covering a championship fight
00:54:34here at the Ava Holtz Tennis Stadium in Miami Beach.
00:54:37Harold Letterman, how does this fight look to you?
00:54:39Well, Larry, I'd say to something.
00:54:41As a judge, you hate like heck to score a fight for a guy that's doing nothing but running away.
00:54:45But the truth of the matter is Cornelius Boza Edwards, even though he's the aggressor,
00:54:50it's not effective aggressiveness.
00:54:52So I have it four rounds to two for Hector Camacho.
00:54:55He's running away, but he's still landing the clean right jabs, just as you've been calling it.
00:55:00I think Camacho's still landing the better punches, and that's how I see it.
00:55:03Before he's left, I'm going to run up against him.
00:55:06If he runs the ball, you're out of that jab, all right?
00:55:08I think Camacho, Ray, apparently really doesn't have that much confidence in his punching ability.
00:55:19Otherwise, he would use it more.
00:55:21And Boza Edwards has taken his best shots.
00:55:24Well, the sting is not really on Camacho's punches like I've seen him in the past.
00:55:29He's hit Edwards with some good shots.
00:55:32Now Edwards is on the attack to Camacho's body.
00:55:34And again, that's as soon as Camacho gets against the ropes, Edwards is right on him.
00:55:39So obviously, Edwards went to school on Camacho's last fight with Rosario.
00:55:47You have to stay close to a fight like Camacho.
00:55:51His hand speed, his foot speed, you've got to be inside with him.
00:55:55Because outside, he can box your ears off.
00:55:58You don't have a chance with his hand speed.
00:56:00And again, as we mentioned earlier, stamina really could be the telling factor.
00:56:08Because at least on our unofficial official's card,
00:56:12Merrill Letterman has the fight close enough that it could be won in the final rounds by either man.
00:56:16And remember that two-point edge in the first round because of the knockdown.
00:56:35That could become a factor.
00:56:39Counter punching.
00:56:40Combination by Camacho.
00:56:42Pretty good body shot by Rosario Edwards, right?
00:56:47Well, he dipped that one in.
00:56:49Very good body shot.
00:56:50Put a lot of body behind it.
00:56:53But it takes more than one particular punch.
00:56:56Edwards is trying to load up.
00:56:57He needs to put some combinations together.
00:57:00That last left hook caught Camacho in the arm.
00:57:03You watch what happens here.
00:57:05As Edwards rushes in, Camacho connects with that one-two punch combination.
00:57:10Camacho, after he throws one-two, he needs to come back with that hook.
00:57:21Because the guy's chin is still up there.
00:57:30Wild left hand by Edwards.
00:57:31And I think there perhaps is a little frustration on the part of Rosario Edwards.
00:57:35Another wild left.
00:57:36Camacho's just not there.
00:57:37And Edwards, I think, got the best of that exchange.
00:57:56It might have been the first time tonight he did get the better of it.
00:57:58Edward's stepping up the tempo a little bit here.
00:58:17He can't touch it.
00:58:29It's slowing down considerably.
00:58:31Now, you don't have to move fast.
00:58:32Be steady.
00:58:33When you're steady, you're very effective now.
00:58:35Steady, steady.
00:58:36Ignite him with jabs.
00:58:37One, two.
00:58:37When you're running with this.
00:58:38When you're getting frustrated, ignite him.
00:58:40One, two.
00:58:40All right?
00:58:40Now, he comes in.
00:58:41Relax.
00:58:42All right, buddy?
00:58:43He's getting frustrated.
00:58:44He's getting slow.
00:58:44So, you don't have to run fast.
00:58:46I want you to be steady.
00:58:47He's getting slow.
00:58:49There you see Camacho leaping in for a change.
00:58:55Edwards, who is a true professional, stands right in there with him and meets him at the pass.
00:59:04Boza Edwards is a really good professional fighter.
00:59:08We heard in Camacho's corner that sign that his trainer, Chuck Talemi, was telling him that he's got to do more punching, right?
00:59:23Well, less running and less moving and more punches because Camacho basically has been trying to load up with one or two punch combinations.
00:59:32He was also saying that Boza Edwards is slowing down.
00:59:35That does not appear to be the case.
00:59:37I don't think that's true at all.
00:59:39I think Edwards is in the fight.
00:59:41He's fighting his style.
00:59:42He's fighting his fight.
00:59:44He's just dealing with so much speed.
00:59:45Look at those hands on Camacho.
00:59:47Now he's starting to put his combinations together.
00:59:51Well, you heard Chuck Talemi in our pre-fight feature say, you don't want to ever say anything negative in a fighter's corner.
00:59:57Well, he certainly wasn't doing that between these last two rounds.
01:00:00Boza Edwards just yelled at Camacho that he's hitting low.
01:00:03Camacho has been having problems with his nose ever since the Rosado fight, and I think that's the reason he's breathing from the mouth.
01:00:19You know, the interesting thing about this fight, Barry, one punch, one solid punch to turn this entire fight around.
01:00:43There again, you saw Camacho just get his back to the ropes and get out of there.
01:00:48That's the way it was with Rosario.
01:00:52Except that Rosario caught him on the ropes.
01:00:55Might have been a headbutt in there.
01:00:57Carlos Padilla trying to keep control here.
01:01:09And again, every time Camacho gets his back to the ropes, even for an instant,
01:01:21Rose Edwards tries to jump right on it with minimal success.
01:01:24And in very close quarters, a lot of punches being caught on the gloves of both men.
01:01:49He's starting to really frustrate Boza Edwards.
01:01:53What happens inside here, Camacho throws punches and ties man up and not allow for Edwards to get his punches on.
01:02:00That is quite frustrating for any fighter.
01:02:01Come on, come on.
01:02:03Come on.
01:02:03Come on.
01:02:04Come on.
01:02:04Come on.
01:02:05Come on.
01:02:06Come on.
01:02:07Come on.
01:02:08Come on.
01:02:09Come on.
01:02:10Come on.
01:02:11Come on.
01:02:12Come on.
01:02:13Come on.
01:02:14Come on.
01:02:15Come on.
01:02:16Come on.
01:02:17Come on.
01:02:18Come on.
01:02:19Come on.
01:02:20Come on.
01:02:21Come on.
01:02:22Come on.
01:02:23Come on.
01:02:24Come on.
01:02:25Come on.
01:02:26You're beautiful.
01:02:27You're doing beautiful now, because you're not allowed to do these punches.
01:02:29Just let them go smooth.
01:02:30And you're doing more damage that way.
01:02:31You understand what I'm saying?
01:02:32And when you're close to him, forget the head.
01:02:34Go to the body.
01:02:35Over to the body.
01:02:37Got every round.
01:02:39Four more rounds.
01:02:40You got every round so far to walk over.
01:02:43You're shutting the guy out.
01:02:44You're going to really pepper the ring.
01:02:46Don't lose your pull and don't put your hands down and don't walk away.
01:02:53Stay in front of him all the time.
01:02:55Concentrate and break his heart.
01:02:57Any time you're chasing him, don't throw swings at him.
01:03:00The jab.
01:03:01Once you hit him with the jab, you can hit him with everything else.
01:03:04You got it?
01:03:05Good.
01:03:06One more easy one, Pecky.
01:03:08One more easy one, Pecky, and you're home.
01:03:13That's it.
01:03:15Ray, they're saying to Hector that he's winning this so easily.
01:03:19Is that a good thing to tell a fighter who's not winning it that easily?
01:03:22Not at all, Larry.
01:03:23In fact, I recall in the piece they were saying they never discourage a fighter.
01:03:28I always tell him something positive.
01:03:30But you have to be honest with the fighter.
01:03:32Camacho knows this is a rough going for him.
01:03:35So he's aware that he's in for a fight.
01:03:37And, of course, I always hearken back to your fight with Tommy Hearns
01:03:40when Angelo Dundee in your corner said,
01:03:42You're blowing it, kid. You're blowing it.
01:03:44Exactly. I mean, you must tell the fighter the truth
01:03:46because quite naturally he knows he's in there.
01:04:01The crowd really wants a little more action here.
01:04:03And it wouldn't be a bad idea.
01:04:07Camacho basically is fighting in moderation.
01:04:11He's fighting spirits.
01:04:13He moves around the ring.
01:04:15A few seconds.
01:04:16Then he comes in with a few combinations and gets back on his bodysitter.
01:04:20And the bodysitter means he's on his toes dancing and moving around.
01:04:23And again, a counter punching right hand by Camacho.
01:04:40Keeps Edwards off of him.
01:04:41Edwards wild with his punches.
01:04:42Edwards wild with his punches.
01:04:43Edwards wild with his punches.
01:04:48Four jabs by Camacho.
01:05:08Four jabs by Camacho.
01:05:10Two goin' to Paul Esso.
01:05:16, thank you so much.
01:05:24Come on, come on, come on, come on.
01:05:54Not a really punishing right hand, just a quick straight right hand.
01:06:24You've got to nip the pump, you know what I mean?
01:06:27You've got to fucking take it away from the pump, drag it off his head, all right?
01:06:30Because you're going forward, you're doing the right thing, but you've got to get a couple fucking punches in it.
01:06:34Carlos!
01:06:35Don't go crazy, but when you get him on the ropes, throw some of your best shots around the side, through the middle.
01:06:40Pressure, pressure, pressure.
01:06:41Stop him holding!
01:06:42Darrell, how's it going on your card?
01:06:46I've got it a dead-even fight.
01:06:49I've got Boza Edwards ahead five to four in rounds, but even in points.
01:06:53I think Boza Edwards is taking the fight to Hector Camacho.
01:06:56He's the aggressor, he's digging the hardest shots, and all I see Hector doing is flicking out that right jab and running away.
01:07:02Swippers are going.
01:07:20On my card, Camacho is ahead by more than that, and Boza Edwards is going to have to do some damage in these last three rounds to win.
01:07:29Well, we'll see.
01:07:29That makes for some interesting viewing come the time that this fight gets put in the hands of the judges
01:07:36if, in fact, it winds up happening that way.
01:07:42Again, all of us have seen some pretty bizarre decisions in a boxing match.
01:07:50There's a good combination, and Camacho opens up.
01:07:52And there's the left hand by Boze Edwards.
01:08:02I'm not really sure, Ray, that Boze was hurt that much.
01:08:05I think he was, Barry. I mean, Camacho just came to life all of a sudden.
01:08:09And I think he rocked Boze Edwards for a second there.
01:08:15Edwards just had such a solid chin, a very durable fight.
01:08:22He's a methodical fighter. I mean, you can pretty much figure him out because he's going to do the same thing.
01:08:46He won't change.
01:08:47He's going to be aggressive. That's why Camacho a lot of times, David, beat him to the punch.
01:08:59Well, it's going to be very interesting to see how the judges view this fight.
01:09:01If they view it the way Harold Letterman did, and that Boze Edwards is the aggressive fighter,
01:09:05and therefore worthy of winning the fight.
01:09:08Or if they see it the way Larry Merchant has, and that even though Boze Edwards may be the aggressive fighter,
01:09:14Camacho is doing what he needs to do to win.
01:09:16Well, Boze is doing what he does best, and that's being aggressive and trying to wear his man out.
01:09:34In fact, I have to apologize to him after the fight, because I kept saying Boze.
01:09:38Boze-o, rather.
01:09:39In fact, Boze is my idol.
01:09:41Boze.
01:09:50Get off, fellas.
01:09:51Get off, fellas.
01:09:55Again, Camacho with a flurry and out.
01:10:00The crowd doesn't like it, but it's really not a bad tactic,
01:10:07because Camacho said the only time he was hurt in his last fight with Rosario
01:10:11was when he was against the ropes.
01:10:12So when he gets against the ropes, he ties his man out.
01:10:21Okay.
01:10:23When Camacho can throw and land a fusillade of punches like the one he did early in that round,
01:10:28you wonder why he doesn't do it more often.
01:10:31Every time he's steady, you're very effective.
01:10:33You're very effective when you're steady.
01:10:35Don't move too fast.
01:10:36Just steady, jab, jab, steady.
01:10:38Right counter-jab.
01:10:39Right up, because they're working beautiful now.
01:10:43You're hurting him.
01:10:44But you've got to be steady, Hector.
01:10:45Don't move too much.
01:10:46Steady, steady, all right?
01:10:49Give it a great boxing exhibition.
01:10:51There you see.
01:10:53A right hand, a right, a left, a right.
01:10:56Tremendous fusillade of punches.
01:10:58A combination that you just won't see very often.
01:11:04And then he stops for the round.
01:11:07Again from another angle.
01:11:21So, two rounds left in this one.
01:11:30I almost hope this goes to a decision.
01:11:31Just so I can see which one of you guys is right.
01:11:39That very well may be the case,
01:11:41because Camacho is really playing it very, very cautious here.
01:11:46Keep using the ring to his advantage.
01:11:48Once in a while, he puts that jab out.
01:11:50Throws a couple combinations.
01:11:52Ties this man up.
01:11:53Get the back of the box, so they'll start using the ring again.
01:12:05Oh, there was a good shot by Camacho.
01:12:07That really straightened those Edwards right up.
01:12:16But again, one punch.
01:12:20You know what I see in Boza Edwards is the fact that Camacho is able to see it
01:12:29and sense a lot of his punches coming,
01:12:31because Boza telegraphs his left hand.
01:12:34Telegraph I mean, he cocks it back just as for a second,
01:12:38and Camacho is able to get away from it.
01:12:39I get the feeling, perhaps, Boza Edwards might be getting a little tired here.
01:12:50I get the feeling, perhaps, Boza Edwards might be getting a little tired here.
01:13:00He looks in pretty good shape to me.
01:13:02He's not breathing heavily, and he's just doing what he has to do here.
01:13:07I don't think he can do any more.
01:13:08He doesn't have fast hands.
01:13:10He's not particularly a power puncher,
01:13:12and he's in here with one of the quickest fighters in the lightweight division.
01:13:16That shot came closer to you than it did to Camacho.
01:13:31Boza would do a better job if Camacho was stationary.
01:13:34This movement here is just totally throwing Boza Edwards off balance.
01:13:41He can't get set.
01:13:54Duff yelling, let him run, let him run.
01:13:59Thinking that if he runs, he's not going to win the round,
01:14:01which is the line of thinking of Harold Letterman here.
01:14:04And we will go to Harold Letterman at the end of this round
01:14:16and see what he has on his card.
01:14:19And, Harold, how do you see it going to the final round?
01:14:22Well, I've got Hector Camacho ahead by two points.
01:14:26I gave him Hector Camacho rounds 10 and 11.
01:14:30For some reason, Cornelius Boza Edwards just stopped digging the shots
01:14:34that he was digging in the earlier rounds.
01:14:36And Hector is continuing to bounce those right hands off of Cornelius.
01:14:40When he comes to your straight, be ready for him.
01:14:53Please, you've got to hand him a chance.
01:14:57Please let it all hang out, right?
01:14:59Fight for your life.
01:15:00I've had the feeling in this fight on occasion, Ray, that Camacho,
01:15:11after landing some punches early in rounds,
01:15:26has been sort of freezing the ball or running out the clock.
01:15:31Let's see how he can close the deal here.
01:15:33I think we'll see a more aggressive Camacho now.
01:15:36I think he wants to close the show.
01:15:39You'll probably see more punches by Camacho.
01:15:42Although, presently, he's not doing anything.
01:15:44It was an ollie shuffle by Boza Edwards.
01:15:49Sort of an ollie shuffle.
01:15:51Well, it was more of an Edwards stomp.
01:15:53No time to showboat here, so far as Boza Edwards is concerned.
01:16:02He's got to go get it.
01:16:10That's where he wants it, but he didn't get it.
01:16:12Come on!
01:16:14Come on!
01:16:15Come on!
01:16:15Come on!
01:16:16Come on!
01:16:17Come on!

01:16:20Come on!
01:16:21Come on!
01:16:22Come on!
01:16:23Come on!
01:16:25I think Camacho's going to catch Boza reaching in.
01:16:28Because he's able to measure with his jab.
01:16:31And I think he's going to come and counter with the left hand.
01:16:36There was a good right hand right there.
01:16:40And Camacho trying to end it the way he started it.
01:16:47Now he turns Edwards around, and that was a good uppercut.
01:16:50Now, come on!
01:16:51I think Camacho's going to give you a good ball!
01:16:52Look at him!
01:16:53Oh, wow!
01:16:54Look at him!
01:16:55Go away!
01:16:56Go away!
01:16:57Go away!
01:16:58Come on!
01:16:59Look at him!
01:17:00Go away!
01:17:01Come on!
01:17:03Come on!
01:17:04I suppose Edwards has nothing left, and I'm not sure but that he's right.
01:17:19He's just, Kamacho is just so quick.
01:17:22The crowd doesn't particularly like this show, but it was a quick,
01:17:26Kamacho did the right thing.
01:17:27He's an artist. He really did what he felt I'm sure he had to do.
01:17:36He certainly did what he told us he was going to do, and that is not get on the ropes,
01:17:43do a lot of side to side, and keep his head moving.
01:17:51He felt he kept his head too straight, too upright against Rosario.
01:17:57Kamacho keeps checking his head.
01:18:05And so this one is just about over, and there will be no knockdown.
01:18:13No knockout, I should say. One knockdown that was in the first round, and this one's history.
01:18:21Well, a less than scintillating performance, really, on either fighter's part.
01:18:38All the excitement coming early in this evening of boxing as Edward Rosario knocking out Livingstone Bramble in quick fashion, and most impressively so.
01:18:51Hector Kamacho then coming on, and let's, for just a moment, take a look at Harold Letterman's final card.
01:18:56Well, Barry, I scored the fight seven rounds to five in favor of Hector Kamacho, and I gave him an extra point for the knockdown in the first round, but I want to tell you something.
01:19:05I just really didn't like the type of style at Hector Ford. He ran away. He didn't give the fans their money's worth, so to speak.
01:19:14Boza pressed, but in the final three rounds, he just didn't throw enough punches to pull the fight out.
01:19:19I thought it was close, but I thought Kamacho won seven to five because he landed the clean right jabs while he was running away.
01:19:27He ran away, but he landed the sharp right jabs, and Boza just didn't have it in the final three rounds when he needed to really come on to take the fight away from Kamacho.
01:19:36And that's how I saw it, Barry.
01:19:38Well, it wasn't really a Rembrandt, Ray, but again, I guess a W is a W for Kamacho if, in fact, he gets it.
01:19:42I think what will be fair is to ask Kamacho whether or not the weight weakened him, and like in the first round, Kamacho was aggressive like I thought he would be.
01:19:54Here he's connecting with those combinations, some missing, some catching Edwards on the arm, but the one that did the job was the shot to the head.
01:20:02Yeah, that first left hand was the one, and that one really more knocked him off balance than it did knock him down, really.
01:20:08Looked like he was back on his heels when the punch came.
01:20:10Well, that shot there pretty much started everything, and it came in such a succession that Edwards was totally bewildered by the hand speed of Kamacho.
01:20:19But I'm curious to see whether or not Kamacho said that weight really weakened him.
01:20:25Let's take a look at our final punch stat numbers, and as you can see, Kamacho did work a little bit harder than Boza Edwards.
01:20:31Boza Edwards was really not very efficient with his punches. 21% to Kamacho's 42, and let's see if in the judges' eyes that's the way they saw it.
01:20:38The ring announcer, Frank Freeman, and the official decision.
01:20:42Ladies and gentlemen, we have a unanimous decision.
01:20:46Judge Rafael Cartaya scores at 115-112.
01:20:55Judge Eugenio Garcia scores at 120-108.
01:21:00And Vince Delgado scores at 118-109 for the winner and still WBC lightweight champion, Victor Machacho.
01:21:14Well, I think it's pretty interesting, Ray, that some people saw it the way Harold saw it.
01:21:23Some people saw it the way Larry saw it amongst the judges.
01:21:26One scored at 120-108.
01:21:27That was pretty much the way Larry Merchant saw it.
01:21:29One scored at 115-112.
01:21:30That was the way Harold Mutterman saw it, and the third was in the middle.
01:21:33So I guess the people that we had watching the fight saw it pretty much the same way as the judges.
01:21:37Well, I gave the edge to Kamacho.
01:21:39Kamacho threw a lot of punches.
01:21:41Moved a great deal.
01:21:42Moved a lot of times unnecessarily.
01:21:44But I feel that Kamacho threw the most punches.
01:21:46But it looked like he really came out of the gate and said,
01:21:48I'm going to do away with this guy.
01:21:49And then when he realized maybe he had a little bit tougher nut than he thought,
01:21:52he said, okay, now I'm going to do what I have to do, not what I want to do.
01:21:55Kamacho had two fights tonight.
01:21:56He tried to overshadow the performance by Rosario's stoppage of Bramble.
01:22:01And he was fighting this guy here.
01:22:03It was just too much pressure, I think.
01:22:05All right, we're going to go up to the ring right now where Larry Merchant is with the winner
01:22:08and still the champion, Hector Macho Camacho.
01:22:11Larry, you got it.
01:22:13Okay, Hector Camacho.
01:22:15Hector, you came out blazing almost like you were trying to show that you could do better than Edward Rosario.
01:22:21Was that what you were up to?
01:22:22Not really.
01:22:23You know, I was the main attraction.
01:22:25It was my show.
01:22:26It was like I told you.
01:22:27Then I told you Rosario was going to beat him.
01:22:29Bramble wasn't nothing.
01:22:30And he'll fought nobody like Rosario.
01:22:33Larry, hey, I can't make the weight.
01:22:36No excuses for nothing.
01:22:38I feel happy.
01:22:39All that bragging is over.
01:22:40You feel like this was too much for you, making the weight?
01:22:43You don't feel like you fought a good fight?
01:22:45No, I feel like I fought a sharp fight.
01:22:47But I wasn't strong enough to stay there and I'll slug him.
01:22:50And I told you before that, I stood two days without you.
01:22:52Well, if you were so successful in the first round slugging with him, why didn't you go back at him?
01:22:57Hey, you heard that commercial at the HBO do?
01:23:00To be the best, you got to beat the best.
01:23:02I fought one of the best.
01:23:05What are your thoughts about the weight?
01:23:08Did you find yourself weakened during the fight because you had worked so hard to get the weight?
01:23:13Later on, I wasn't able to stay there and push it out.
01:23:16So to outstand my legs, I had to box and stay sharp.
01:23:20I was sharp.
01:23:21And as you know, he's a strong guy.
01:23:23I was always on the move.
01:23:24I wasn't really set to really hit him off with a clean shot.
01:23:27Are you disappointed the fans seem to be booing you?
01:23:30No.
01:23:31Rosario seem to steal the show?
01:23:33No way.
01:23:34Hey, power to Rosario.
01:23:35He fought a great fight.
01:23:36He beat a good fighter.
01:23:38In my language, I say the opposite.
01:23:40A scrub, you know, because he was mouthing, disrespecting me, and calling me the bad guy.
01:23:45Me and Rosario are the number one fighters, the number one hero in Puerto Rico.
01:23:49And one day, we're going to get it off.
01:23:51But I'm going to go up to Japan, get the junior welterweight belt, and we get it on there.
01:23:55Are you saying that you're not going to try to unify the title with Rosario as soon as you can?
01:24:00Right now, I got the Japan guy waiting for me.
01:24:03Either he's going to fight a rematch with the guy that he beat, which is Alessandro.
01:24:06So you're going up to junior welterweight, you're saying?
01:24:08No question about it.
01:24:09Hey, this is my old man.
01:24:12I love him.
01:24:13Believe him.
01:24:14I ain't staying.
01:24:15Thank you very much, Hector.
01:24:18And back to ringside.
01:24:21All right, so we are back at ringside here.
01:24:24And now Hector Camacho says that he is going to move up in weight, and Ray Leonard, I don't know.
01:24:28What do you think?
01:24:29Well, the fact that weight was a factor here, and Camacho admitted that.
01:24:33And he wants to move up because he wasn't as strong as he normally was in the past.
01:24:38So Hector Camacho, sort of pleased and by the same token displeased with the performance that he had tonight.
01:24:44How would you evaluate it?
01:24:46Well, I think Camacho did the right thing.
01:24:48I mean, he felt that he wasn't strong, Barrett.
01:24:50He felt that the safest thing for him to do was to utilize the ring, in which he did.
01:24:54Although the crowd did not particularly appreciate it, he did what was in his best interest.
01:24:59Is it, do you feel, the fact that Rosario, for all intent, handled him?
01:25:04He won the decision, but he really, maybe he didn't win the fight.
01:25:07I don't know.
01:25:08And he really doesn't want a part of Rosario again?
01:25:10I don't know.
01:25:11I don't think Camacho is afraid of anyone.
01:25:12I think the fact that Camacho sees it's in his, you know, good favor to move up in the weight division,
01:25:18and hopefully have Rosario come up there to meet him.
01:25:20What do you suppose Jimmy Paul right now is thinking, and Edward Rosario is thinking, if in fact Camacho does move up a division?
01:25:26That'll bring Chavez probably down into this division, so it'll still be a strong division.
01:25:30Well, Rosario has made a very profound statement tonight.
01:25:33Let's see what happens.
01:25:34All right, let's go back up to the ring.
01:25:35Larry Merchant is with Cornelius Boza-Edwards.
01:25:38Larry?
01:25:39Cornelius Boza-Edwards, he seemed to shock you in the first round the way he came out, did he?
01:25:44Yeah, yeah.
01:25:45He shocked me because he caught me a little bit off balance, and he threw it.
01:25:48That's his best shot.
01:25:49He's got one, two.
01:25:50But apart from that, all he does is flick.
01:25:52I mean, how can a guy win a fight with flicking and he's doing all the running?
01:25:56As far as we know, boxing is that you have to take the fight to someone to win.
01:26:00You don't run all night long and then flick, flick, and then you call that a winning.
01:26:04Well, it seemed, however, that even though that's his style, that he was landing more punches.
01:26:10Is that more of a...
01:26:11He wasn't.
01:26:12Those were flicks.
01:26:14As far as I'm concerned, it's an impact fight, and it's America that started.
01:26:18It wasn't the British that whoever hit the impact is the winner.
01:26:22And what he does was...
01:26:23You're saying that he fought more like a British fighter than an American fighter, and you fought more like a...
01:26:29He fought fighting like a runner.
01:26:31He was running like a rabbit, flick and flick and run.
01:26:33Yeah.
01:26:34And then I would...
01:26:35When I come close to him, he would run.
01:26:37I mean, you don't call that a fight.
01:26:39Give me your opinion on a Rosario Camacho refight, rematch.
01:26:43Well, that's the same thing.
01:26:44He was doing the running, and I don't know what the rematch would go like.
01:26:47If they go and give him Camacho that 120 and 108 Boza Edwards, they would probably give it back to him.
01:26:54You're understandably upset.
01:26:55Thank you very much, Cornelius Boza Edwards.
01:26:58I have a few thoughts about the fights tonight.
01:27:01One is I think that Edward Rosario has emerged now as the star of the best division in boxing, the lightweight division.
01:27:12I guess we don't have a real tournament going here to unify all the titles, but what I'd like to see is just all of these guys keep fighting each other.
01:27:23Jimmy Paul against Rosario, and Rosario against Camacho, and the youngsters Vinnie Pazienza, and Meldrick Taylor, and Whitaker, and Cesar Chavez.
01:27:33All very good fighters or prospects.
01:27:36They should just keep on fighting each other endlessly, giving us all our money's worth, entertaining us, making money for themselves.
01:27:46It would be prize-fighting heaven for fight fans.
01:27:50Now back to Barry and Ray.
01:27:52Okay, thanks very much, Larry Merchant.
01:27:54Let's go back to the events of this evening now.
01:27:56It's been a long night.
01:27:58Edward Rosario, of course, he scored a dramatic knockout victory over Livingston Bramble.
01:28:02Let's go back and show you that once more.
01:28:05Ray, I really didn't think this fight was going to go.
01:28:07I thought perhaps Rosario might win the fight.
01:28:09I had no idea that it would end this quickly and this impressively.
01:28:12Well, I didn't know who was going to really win the fight.
01:28:14I knew both guys had the power and talent to defeat each other.
01:28:17But here we see Rosario completely dominating the second round.
01:28:22He hurt Bramble with some pretty clean right hands.
01:28:24There was another right hand that sent Bramble to the canvas.
01:28:27It was a quite impressive performance by Edwin Rosario.
01:28:30Livingston Bramble said that he had a thumb in the eye, and that's what caused him to stay down.
01:28:34But you had the feeling maybe he did, maybe he didn't.
01:28:36I don't know.
01:28:37But there were enough punches there that obviously did some damage.
01:28:39Well, Rosario, he threw a lot of...
01:28:40He had to watch the short uppercuts, right hands, left hooks.
01:28:43Beautiful execution of punches thrown by Rosario.
01:28:46I tell you, Rosario is ready for everybody now.
01:28:48That was pretty good.
01:28:49Did you ever think about fighting?
01:28:50Oh, yeah. I thought about it.
01:28:51Let me ask you another thing, too.
01:28:52One final question about Hector Macho Camacho.
01:28:54Now, he moves out of this division.
01:28:56And the same thing with you, where you were a guy that not only was a champion, but you were a champion who could sell tickets.
01:29:01I don't see anybody else in the lightweight division who's capable of doing that.
01:29:04And I have to think people like Rosario and Paul now might perhaps miss out on some paydays if Camacho, big paydays, that is, if Camacho does move up.
01:29:11Well, I think one thing for sure, because Jimmy Paul, who's standing nearby, he wants to fight Camacho.
01:29:16Rosario wants a rematch.
01:29:18It's not too far up to the junior welterweight division.
01:29:20They may follow him there.
01:29:21Hector Camacho, of course, told us that the near loss he had to Edwin Rosario was a movie that he just had to see.
01:29:27And now, I guess, the job for him, if in fact he does move up, is to see what Reel 2, the sequel, has to offer in the Hector Camacho story.
01:29:35Well, stay tuned immediately following our World Championship Boxing Telecast for Silverado in the East and training curve.
01:29:41Wait a minute.
01:29:42Wait a minute.
