00:23interesting holiday because you might be wondering why am i off school or why are so many people not
00:29working today what's the story what happened to make this such a special day you're about to learn
00:37and it's gonna be cool and you're gonna be like hey i know all about labor day
00:42now here's our first fact labor day is always on the first monday in september it's always on a monday
00:53this year it's going to be september 4th which of course is a monday so the first monday of
01:00september it's labor day which is a great time for a holiday i mean kids have off school they're able
01:07to go outside it's still nice and warm and so they get a little bit of break as they're starting out
01:12their school year it's a great time to have a holiday and to play and have fun
01:17let's look at a quick calendar of the month of september
01:23that's really cool i think at least i think i thought that was pretty cool
01:32um the calendar just you know popped up and everything
01:35so here's labor day okay it's the first monday of the month now this is a 2017 calendar
01:44which is the year that this video is being released which means that labor day this year
01:49is monday the fourth of course the first monday of september
01:54now a lot of people think that labor day is the end of summer i mean look most people have the day
02:04off it's still pretty warm it's kind of like the end of summer right it's kind of like summer's last
02:10stand you know right well no the end of summer is later on in the month on the 22nd it actually
02:20alternates between the 22nd and the 23rd so there's still a little bit of summer left to go
02:27after labor day labor day is not the end of summer it's got a very different purpose than that that
02:33we're going to talk about but the end of summer is later on in the month
02:37still some people call labor day the unofficial end of summer that's kind of a nickname that some
02:46people give it which is fine just as long as they know that it's not really the end of summer
02:51because you know summer's got a few weeks left after labor day
02:56well you might be wondering what is labor day all about if it's not about being the end of summer
03:05what is labor day all about what are we celebrating
03:08labor day celebrates the working men and women of our country and the freedoms that workers enjoy
03:16thanks to the american labor movement look at all the different types of workers and there are so many
03:22more labor day celebrates all of them the american labor movement began in the 1800s here's a picture
03:31of a glass factory in the 1800s now in many workplaces back then the conditions were not very safe the
03:39hours were incredibly long and the pay was not that great
03:43on the very first monday of september in 1882 the american labor movement held a parade in new york
03:55city and you can see some of the signs people are holding they wanted safer workplaces shorter hours
04:02and better pay the parade was a hit and across america there were states that said we think there should
04:11be a thing called labor day a day to celebrate the workers of america
04:19and what's amazing is only 12 years later in 1894 labor day became a federal holiday
04:28and do you know who made that possible

04:36what a cool guy he's the guy that made labor day an official federal holiday
04:44do you see his mustache hanging down oh this was quite the president this was quite the president
04:51president grover cleveland so when anyone asks you hey who was the president that made labor day an
04:59official federal holiday you'll say president grover cleveland and you'll say hey he had a big
05:06mustache too

06:13day an official federal holiday to celebrate american workers and he had a really good mustache

06:56you see labor day isn't about being the end of summer or anything else it's about the hard-working
07:02men and women who make our communities a better place so just do us a favor especially if you're

07:16so hard every day to help you learn and anyone else that you know that's working hard around you
07:23just say thank you because when people work hard they need to be appreciated and we need to realize that
07:29they are making our communities and our homes a better place to be
07:33so that's why we are not going to be a good day
