00:00¡Gracias!
00:30Indulge me, because I have a lot of thank yous.
00:48Thank you, first, to my mom, to my dad, to my stepmom and dad,
00:54to my siblings, Austin, Jesse, and Allison, to my nephew, Theo,
00:59thank you to Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen,
01:04two of the all-time greats of Washington journalism,

01:34That's right.

01:41the great Hans Nichols, and yes, thank you.
01:46And the reigning champion of this award, Barak Ravid.

02:25It's my speech, so a nakedly shameless plug that Original Sin is available for pre-order right now.
02:35And thank you most of all to my sources for trusting me.
02:41One serious note.
02:44To my bones, I believe that reporting and the White House Correspondents Association is as necessary as ever.
02:53President Biden's decline and its cover-up by the people around him
02:59is a reminder that every White House, regardless of party, is capable of deception.
03:07But being truth-tellers also means telling the truth about ourselves.
03:11We, myself included, missed a lot of this story.
03:17And some people trust us less because of it.
03:20We bear some responsibility for faith in the media being at such lows.
03:27I say this because acknowledging errors builds trust.
03:40And being defensive about them further erodes it.
03:45We should have done better.
03:47I believe our mission is vital in a world where people are struggling to figure out what's true
03:57and people with power are not telling the truth.
04:02I also believe that this association has been, is, and will continue to be critical to that mission.
04:13Thank you to the association's leadership for your unflinching defense of the First Amendment.
04:20Not just now, but always.
04:23Your decades of daily battles on behalf of reporters is why this award is one of the great honors of my life.
04:34Of my life.
