More than half of Brits feel some aspects of their own life are ‘out of control’ – from family life to work and finances.
A poll of 2,000 adults found they are least likely to have a hold of their physical health (33 per cent), work (29 per cent) and personal finances (28 per cent).
Smart Energy GB, which commissioned the research, has teamed up with the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) and sports psychologist Dr Josie Perry, to show how you can feel a bit more confident and in control – as darts is a particular sport which requires incredible focus due to small targets and rowdy crowds.
Dr Perry said: “I have worked with a lot of athletes and sports players to overcome mental barriers and help them stay in control of their performance, and these techniques can also help households day-to-day.
“Identifying one important thing you can do that’s going to reduce pressure when you’re stressed, and focusing on completing that first, will help you get back in control.
“If you’re worried about money, a simple tool that can help manage energy bills more easily is a smart meter. They are installed at no extra cost by your energy supplier and can help you keep track of what you spend.”

00:00As a sports psychologist, I have helped hundreds of people overcome obstacles and deal with difficult
00:05barriers. It does not surprise me at all that 56% of people say they feel out of control in at
00:12least one area of their lives. I'm here today to give you some tips to help you feel a bit more
00:16in control, including with your finances. Understanding which part of your lives feel
00:26a little out of control is really helpful because then you can make a plan and then you can have a
00:32very specific process for how am I going to deal with this? How am I going to get more in control of
00:37it? It's really important to feel in control of our personal finances and our energy bills because
00:43when we don't, we can feel really overwhelmed. One of the things elite athletes do brilliantly
00:47is use data. They will use it to analyse their performances so they can work out where to make
00:52changes, how to be even better. Tools like smart meters give us accurate data. When we've got
00:58accurate data, we can make really good decisions about our future and what we want to be doing,
01:03where we want to be spending our money. Makes us feel so much more in control of what's going on at
01:08home. The two biggest obstacles that sports people like darts players might face when they're competing
01:13are going to be attention. How do they keep their attention in the right place at the right intensity
01:18for the right amount of time? If you're feeling under pressure, if there's high stakes, we want
01:23you to get task focused. So that's thinking about the one thing you can do in that moment that's
01:29going to help you perform really well. Often we'll turn that into something like a mantra. Eye on the
01:34board, head up, shoulders back. Something that's very specific that helps you focus on how to really do
01:40well in that moment. So I think the biggest tip that we can follow to stay calm under pressure
01:44is to control the controllables. Know what is in front of us. What are those stresses? What have
01:50we got coming up? That makes us feel in control. That makes us feel much calmer. Then we're able to
01:55tackle the things in front of us.
