Shock next Rangers claim emerges as Steven Gerrard return debated
Transcript
00:00Last couple of days, we understand that Greta Steenson is the man leading the club's search
00:07for a new manager. We've had, in the last couple of weeks, some movement in the betting markets
00:16as to who might be the man to come in. There's obviously been plenty of chat around Steven
00:20Gerrard. We've also had a significant shift in the betting for Jose Mourinho, which would be
00:26quite some statement if they managed to lure him to Glasgow. And there's also been a new name at
00:32the top of the betting today, Marco Rose, former Leipzig manager, also in there. But something we
00:40need to touch on, the Steven Gerrard stuff certainly doesn't go away. And you did a bit of digging this
00:45afternoon. There's a report going around that Michael Beal might be also lured back to Ibrox.
00:53Can you elaborate a bit on that? Yeah, so there was a report in one of the tabloids on Monday
00:58morning that was quite extensive, probably as extensive as I've read so far on the Rangers
01:04takeover stuff, where it suggested that Steven Gerrard under the 49ers is the likely sort of
01:09man who could come into the dugout at this stage. Nothing's finalised. Of course, I wouldn't take
01:14that as, you know, blue smoke over Ibrox type stuff. But it's certainly been, it's been the
01:20first time a name has actually been pinned on somebody as opposed to dartboard type stuff.
01:25Perhaps the most interesting part about it, the Steven Gerrard name is a surprise, but it'd be a
01:30surprise if he came back, but it's not necessarily a surprise to see him framed in that way. The big
01:35surprise about that claim was Michael Beal being part of his backroom. And that for me would just,
01:42I just can't see how that'll happen. I struggled to see how the Rangers fans would buy into the idea
01:51of Steven Gerrard again if he was on the coaching staff. And I know Michael Beal was heralded as the
01:56sort of brains behind 55 almost sort of five years ago now, but his stint as Rangers manager. And I
02:04don't think it was just the fact that it didn't work. I think it was more, you know, there was the
02:08full thing before he came in. He was in the stands before Giovanni van Bronckhorst eventually
02:12got sacked. People kind of seen that as a lack of respect. The recruitment has set the club back.
02:18The club are still struggling with some of the embers of his recruitment in charge. You know,
02:24that's set the club back years. And, you know, his general attitude towards that time at Rangers
02:31just has rubbed fans up the wrong way. I think he's a bit of a lightning rod figure at the minute.
02:36I still think that's far too soon for him to be coming back. Still a man who holds a lot
02:40of love for Rangers by the sounds of his interviews and podcasts that he does. But again, he's
02:45went to Sunderland as well. And that just was, that went even worse. It went to Alley, in
02:50fact, with Steven Gerrard. And it didn't last very long. So he was also part of the coaching
02:58staff with Gerrard at Aston Villa. And he wasn't there for the full duration. But that reign
03:02only lasted less than a year and he was there for a fair chunk of that. So I think people would buy
03:09into the idea of Steven Gerrard. But I think Michael Beal would probably bring with him an unwanted
03:17attention in terms of added scrutiny that they could do without and what is going to be a transitional
03:24season for them next season. Even with all the money they're going to, with a clear out, a new manager,
03:29a new ideas, a new takeover that needs time for that to settle. And I'm not sure you want to be adding
03:34bombs in to really let Michael Beal return at the Rangers in any capacity, would you?
03:39Yeah. Yeah. And I guess I covered the report at tail end of last week that obviously Greta Arsteens and
03:47the technical chief of 49ers Enterprises has also been scouring across Europe. I do find it interesting that
03:55the name Marco Rose has obviously kind of shot up the market. He was down at around the 25 to 1 mark,
04:02I think, at one stage. And he's one of the favorites. And I guess I can't really read too much into it at this
04:10stage, but we know that clearly there's been plenty of discussions taking place around this position, hasn't there?
04:16Yeah. Yeah. I mean, they need to find somebody, they need to find somebody and stick to it.
04:22Yeah. Now there's not, there's no point sticking with somebody who, when it clearly isn't working.
04:28Yeah. That's just been, you know, with Philippe Clermont, it became very clear that was coming to its
04:34natural end. But at some stage, they're going to need to do what they did with Steven Gerrard,
04:38essentially. Maybe that's why the appeal is there. They gave Steven Gerrard probably more rope than a lot
04:44of people would. I think a lot of people, when he got beat off Hamilton Ackeys at home just before
04:48COVID, that, you know, that that experiment was going to come to an end. But he got given
04:54lots of time and eventually brought a title in. Now, did that take a few years? Yes. But it
05:00eventually came. And that felt, I think he said it himself in that sort of now infamous post-match
05:06interview he did with Sky in the stand, where he kind of said, like, we need to, we need to fix the
05:11roof while the sun's shining type thing. And it doesn't seem to ever, I mean, those are pretty,
05:16you know, haunting last words if you're a Rangers fan, because they didn't really do that.
05:19And I feel like that gap in the roof has now, the roof is gone and the full house needs a
05:25renovation type thing. And so I think they need a stabilizing figure that, you know, you need to
05:34earn time in a job like Rangers, but you need to also, the new guys coming in and the new team
05:41behind those guys need to be able to actually trust it. And if you get six months into the next season
05:47and it's going a bit haywire and it's healthy like they're going to win the league, you can't,
05:51you need to be a bit strong in your beliefs and sort of, right, this guy was the right guy six months
05:54ago, we need to stand by it. But they need to pick the right guy for that first. And I think that's why
06:00Rangers fans are so keen to see this takeover, because I think trust in the current regime
06:06doing that has eroded a little bit. They want to see some of the fresh ideas have.
