We went out into Manchester to ask people about shoplifting in an attempt to figure out why there has been a rise and what shops and stores can do to prevent it.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Hewson-Betz and today I'm out on the streets of Manchester asking people about shoplifting.
00:05And that's because last year there were over half a million instances of shoplifting across the UK, which really coincided with the cost of living crisis.
00:12We want to know if people think that there's more that shops can be doing to clamp down on shoplifting,
00:16and also what we as a society can be doing to try and make sure that this isn't a way that people try and support their families.
00:23You know those airlocks that rough bookies have? Maybe that.
00:26I think this is a big question. I don't think shops, it shouldn't be on shops to try and fix this, right?
00:32You have to ask yourself why are people shoplifting? And a lot of it comes down to social inequality, right?
00:36People are not shoplifting by and large for fun, right? They're doing it because it's things they need.
00:42Basically, there's people, we've heard of a family stealing baby phobia.
00:46It depends on who you're talking about as well, because if we're talking about a chain like Morrison's, they can afford to let them go.
00:52What really worries me are the independent stores that will suffer most from this kind of crime.
00:56And also they're the ones that don't have the resources to address it.
