Power has been restored to almost all of Spain and Portugal after a massive blackout on Monday. Investigations are still ongoing into what caused the outage.
Transcript
00:00Cheers in neighbourhoods across Madrid.
00:07As power and light are finally restored, hours after city skylines were plunged into darkness.
00:13Following a massive blackout that cut power to millions of people, from parts of France
00:18to most of Spain and Portugal.
00:21The outage, which started Monday around midday, caused confusion across the Iberian Peninsula,
00:27with hospitals switching to emergency generators and people panic buying at supermarkets.
00:32There was chaos on the roads as traffic systems failed and thousands of travellers were left
00:37stranded as hundreds of flights were delayed or cancelled and public transport ground to
00:42a halt.
00:43My daughter in Barcelona is giving birth.
00:47We're going to miss the connection to get there.
00:50Now we're going to have to sleep here and we don't even have anything to eat.
00:55A state of emergency was declared across the region.
00:58But Spain's Prime Minister was quick to assure his people that cross-sector investigations
01:03were underway to identify the cause of the blackout.
01:06The relevant state institutions and all private operators are working together to understand
01:13what has happened.
01:15All potential causes are being analysed.
01:17I insist again, without ruling out any hypothesis, any possibility.
01:22Amid speculation, both Portugal's Prime Minister and the European Council President said there
01:28were no signs of a cyber attack.
01:30European power companies noted an incident with an interconnector between France and Spain
01:35as being behind the outage, but that there were likely other, yet to be identified,
01:40factors involved.
01:42Despite the lack of clarity, by Tuesday morning, life was already getting back to normal, as
01:47power was restored to the region.
01:52a proper discussion, will also be able to fix a number of people across the region
01:54in the region.
01:55That's where people are also getting back in the region, as the community are working together.
01:57But I think there are people from the region that may have been well involved, which
02:00are finally entering into our country, and there are people from the region that we're
02:01looking for in the region of the region.
02:02It's probably about 50 years old to the region that I've been making, but I've been
02:04so far apart from the region.
02:05I think there is a lot of people that may not be thought of.
