00:00Previously on Rock the Block.
00:02Welcome to the neighborhood.
00:03Four of HGTV's most celebrated designers.
00:06Here's some of the best in the business.
00:07Took on the ultimate renovation challenge.
00:09Each of you will be assigned one of these identical, newly constructed homes.
00:13You can completely redesign whatever you want to do.
00:15The tough part, you'll have just four weeks to add as much value as possible to your houses.
00:20Starting with the master suite.
00:22Oh, I think I have a chance to win this.
00:25And with $175,000 for the entire renovation.
00:28Do you guys have four weeks to rock the block?
00:30The competition was underway.
00:32The designers don't really have a shot.
00:33As renovations began, so did their challenges.
00:37I can see the outside from here.
00:38You literally cut through the outside of the house.
00:41The inspector is concerned about the excessive amount of water usage.
00:44I don't believe you.
00:45Allison spent big on luxury.
00:47This is a $7,000 toilet.
00:49But there was only one designer she saw as a threat.
00:52I feel a little fear.
00:53And only for one person.
00:55Leanne.
00:55The phrase dead in the water comes to mind.
00:58When Tariq Al Moussa came by to judge their master suites.
01:01This wallpaper, definitely a little risky.
01:03Love the color scheme.
01:04Would have loved to have seen more cabinetry.
01:06Absolutely awesome.
01:07The buyer's going to pay top dollar.
01:08The designers held their breath to find out if he flipped.
01:11There's one master suite buyers will pay a premium for.
01:14Leanne.
01:16Or if they flopped.
01:17You may have won the battle, Leanne.
01:18But I'm in this, and it's on.
01:20Tonight.
01:21The kitchen is the moneymaker.
01:22Fingers out.
01:23The kitchen's the hub of the home.
01:24It's really the most important space.
01:26They've got some competitive girls here.
01:28Nobody else is UV curing their countertops.
01:30These girls are really bringing their A-games.
01:33Hey, guys.
01:34How do you feel about your budgets?
01:36We need money.
01:37I think we're out of money.
01:38The designers get a special delivery.
01:40Oh, my God.
01:43Hi.
01:44Hi.
01:45It's Nicole Curtis driving a Mack truck.
01:47Only on HGTV.
01:49And one of the most trusted contractors in the business, Mike Holmes, star of Homes and
01:55Homes, shows up to judge their kitchens.
01:57I can't believe you're in my kitchen.
01:58Anything else you want to say to me before I leave?
02:00You're welcome.
02:03Let's rock.
02:03Four of HGTV's top designers.
02:06This place needs a more.
02:07Four weeks, one chance to add the most value, four amazing renovations, and one winner to
02:14rule them all.
02:15I think we're winning it.
02:18It's not going to be an upgrade.
02:19It's going to be an upheaval.
02:25Hey, yo.
02:26Hey.
02:27I want to go over this kitchen dining plan with you to make sure we're on the same page.
02:31We are in week two of Rock the Block, and that means we get to work on one of my favorite
02:36spaces always, the kitchens.
02:38I lost the master suite.
02:40Why don't you go a little bit bigger with the mirrors?
02:41But I'm going to do everything in my power not to lose two weeks in a row.
02:45Allison, I think for obvious reasons, is my biggest competition.
02:49I mean, she did nine seasons of Kitchen Crashers, but I'm definitely going to give her a run
02:53for her money.
02:54Obviously, you understand that last week was a big loss, but there's no more losing.
02:59The master bedroom bathroom closet.
03:01I put a lot of money into these spaces.
03:04So even though I didn't win that one, I'm still going to focus, keep my eye on the prize.
03:08I've designed over 140 kitchens.
03:10So if I don't win this, and if I don't know what I'm doing here, then I don't deserve to
03:14win.
03:15But Leanne won the master, and I've always been worried about her.
03:19So let's go over this.
03:21I actually won something because we made a real nice bathroom.
03:25I love how that turned out.
03:27Now this week, we have seven days to make a gorgeous kitchen.
03:31All right.
03:32Kitchen.
03:33Yeah.
03:34This is the moneymaker.
03:35Always.
03:36Three more weeks to pump up the value of this house, and we've got a lot of money.
03:40There's definitely that intimidation factor where I feel like the underdog.
03:45I feel like I have to work harder, pay attention more, and just do as much as I humanly can,
03:50and maybe I'll win.
03:52All stages of your life, the kitchen's really important.
03:56So I want to take it from a nice kitchen to like a whoa.
03:59My design style is California casual.
04:02It's more of a lifestyle than design.
04:04You know, it's coastal.
04:05It's beachy.
04:06It's cool.
04:07What I'm thinking is there's a few things that we can do to like really elevate it.
04:10My plan for this competition is to make sure that every inch of this house appeals to a
04:15buyer.
04:16Home run.
04:16Buyers are going to love it.
04:17But if I don't have a great kitchen, guaranteed I'm not going to win this thing.
04:21So I'm going to try to reuse as much as I can and really focus my spending on some big
04:26ticket items.
04:26I think we should make the island bigger and add the beautiful live edge piece of
04:32wood to it.
04:33Just to have something that's really unique.
04:34I'm thinking we do open shelves.
04:36Under those shelves, we can do a backsplash.
04:38I think we can reuse the cabinets because we don't have enough money to do that whole
04:42wall of cabinetry.
04:43And then I want to wrap the hood in really beautiful wood.
04:45Okay.
04:46That'd be cool.
04:46And paint it the same color as the cabinetry.
04:48We can reuse all the appliances.
04:50Obviously, we need a fridge.
04:51And then above the fridge, we do cabinetry, like all the way up to the ceiling.
04:55Glass front cabinetry.
04:57A wine fridge.
04:58Tons of storage for all the pretty stuff.
05:01Really?
05:01What do your dishes at home look like?
05:03Paper.
05:05I feel like I know what a buyer is going to want in this Southern California market.
05:10So that's going to allow me to be smart about how I use my budget.
05:13But I just know that it's like literally anybody's competition.
05:16Let's get started.
05:17All right.
05:17I'm ready.
05:18Other than adding bedrooms and bathrooms, upgrading kitchens is the most obvious way
05:24to increase appraised value.
05:25My mom and I have been renovating homes in the downtown Indianapolis area since 2007.
05:31Renovating to increase appraised value is what I do.
05:34That's what my business is based on.
05:35I truly believe that to win this competition, I'm going to need to spread my money out across
05:41the entire house.
05:42But I also know that a great kitchen is what sells houses.
05:46Honestly, I don't want to change a ton.
05:49I'm not going to change the layout of the cabinets.
05:51What I do want to do is add a second level of uppers to get us all the way to the ceiling.
05:56It's going to give it a really high-end look without having to completely get the kitchen
06:01and start over.
06:02I want to have custom-made a fridge panel and a dishwasher panel.
06:05I feel like that's going to make it look super custom.
06:07All new countertops.
06:08I want to do that really clean white quartz with a little bit of veining so it's white
06:13on white.
06:14But I did find a concrete farm sink I think you're going to dig.
06:16Love it.
06:17The cooktop, I think we just keep that the same, but I want to upgrade the hood gate.
06:21A backsplash with a quartz slab, and then I want to do a pot filler.
06:25Oh.
06:25That's about it.
06:26I'm going to try not to spend a dollar over $30,000 in the kitchen, because if I do, I'm
06:31really worried that I'm not going to be able to add the needed value to the other areas
06:35of the house.
06:35And losing to any of these girls would be the faggot of the heart.
06:39All right.
06:39Let's get it.
06:42The kitchen is the hub of the home.
06:44This is the center of my universe.
06:46This is what I was born to do.
06:48I love vintage and modern.
06:50I know what's going to up the value of any property.
06:53The kitchen being the most important, in my opinion.
06:56So here's my strategy.
06:57I'm going to continue the sophisticated, high-end finishes in the rest of my house.
07:01But this is the kitchen, so I'm going all in, and I'm going to spend the biggest chunk
07:06of my budget here.
07:07So here's the deal.
07:08We're bumping this island out just a little bit.
07:11Waterfall edge, both sides.
07:13Manufactured stone, so it's going to look like marble.
07:16We want the full range.
07:17That's going to give a lot of added value.
07:19We're going to make a coffee bar.
07:20Built-in coffee cappuccino maker.
07:23And this right here is going to become thick, two-inch, chunky, open shelving in brass.
07:28Yeah, that's a really good idea.
07:29I like that.
07:30I'm going to have to buy six cabinets.
07:32Upper stack, so it goes all the way to the ceiling.
07:34No outlets.
07:35So now I can actually have a beautiful slab back splash.
07:38Oh, that's a great idea.
07:39Beautiful custom hood in brass.
07:41There's a showroom right there.
07:42So this competition is almost as if it was created based on what I do every day.
07:47If I don't win, I'm going to be devastated.
07:50This is how we win.
07:51We came here to win.
07:52I didn't come here to lose, so don't worry.
07:54Not in this space.
07:55I think my style is influenced by the fact that nature is more beautiful than anything we
08:02could ever build.
08:04It's always very important for me to design for an emotional reaction.
08:08Oh, my God.
08:10My style, minimus maximalist, maybe?
08:13I'm going all in on the kitchen, and the master suite worked out pretty well.
08:17I'm going to pull those elements and take them into the kitchen.
08:22Keep the stove where it is, but just do a full range right there.
08:26This is the crazy part.
08:27Let's open this up where the pantry is.
08:29I want to turn this into a hallway and put the fridge over here on the side.
08:34So you'll be able to walk right through this wall into this room?
08:37Yeah.
08:37The other thing is, lose the uppers.
08:40I want to do custom cabinets for them.
08:43A metal grate system, powder coat it white.
08:45Like, cut the middle of the cabinet door out.
08:48Right.
08:49I'm thinking this entire cabinet wall gets stoned, and then we'll waterfall this really amazing
08:55clean white counter.
08:56I want this to be your vacation kitchen, where your life is better than their vacation.
09:01The kitchen is honestly always the most important room in the house, so we want to make this
09:07one wows-er.
09:09Hey, Steve.
09:10Hey, what's up?
09:10I'm mixing it up.
09:12Whoa.
09:12Fun.
09:13Come on over here.
09:14I want to do a light stone wall in the kitchen, but light stone gets very expensive, so in order
09:20to work around my budget, I have to figure out another solution to lighten this stuff up.
09:25So this is your stone for the kitchen.
09:27You're sure this is going to turn white and light and not gray?
09:30Yeah, but, you know, your stone's still pretty dark.
09:32My brother's my contractor.
09:34He's here from Pittsburgh to help me.
09:36He makes all of my strange ideas happen.
09:38Even though he complains, he doesn't.
09:40Let me see.
09:41Well, why can't we just grout wash it?
09:45Grout wash it.
09:45Just lighten it up, right?
09:46I feel like I might have invented a new technique.
09:49And then just seal it all in there.
09:51Right.
09:51For budget, we couldn't get this beautiful white stone.
09:54We can just smear some grout over it.
09:57This is a great savings.
09:58Love it.
09:59I think the stone on the back wall is really going to take it to the next level, which is
10:05way better than everyone else.
10:06The phrase dead in the water comes to mind.
10:11This goes here.
10:13This one goes above the refrigerator.
10:15Keep going.
10:17The cabinets and the layout of the cabinets are actually really good.
10:21They're plain white shaker.
10:22They're nothing crazy fancy.
10:23Keeping those is going to save me probably $8,000 or $10,000 to put towards my kitchen backsplash
10:28with the expensive quartz slab.
10:30I'm making extremely smart choices here because the kitchen can really make or break a home.
10:36And in this case, the competition.
10:42Oh, I love this painting.
10:44You know, most people like to do a tile backsplash.
10:47In this case, I'm doing a full slab backsplash.
10:49That's artwork.
10:50And that's a huge value add.
10:52Look at that.
10:53Clean.
10:55I'm not scared to spend big money in the kitchen.
10:57I do it every day and it leads to huge profits.
11:04Is that the kitchen?
11:05Yeah.
11:07You see them offloading the countertops over there?
11:09Let's go look.
11:13This is Allison's house.
11:15I'm surprised.
11:16I honestly thought she was going to go with something a little bit bolder.
11:19Maybe her backsplash.
11:20This vein here and whatever veining is, I just want to make sure it's fluid.
11:24Oh, it looks beautiful.
11:25Is there anybody even working at Mina's house?
11:28I don't see anybody over there.
11:29Will you put the hood back up?
11:31I'm happy with that.
11:32It's happening over at the Ford's house.
11:34A light here.
11:36A light over the island.
11:37It's awesome.
11:38I'd live in this kitchen no problem.
11:40Are those my countertops?
11:41Maybe?
11:43No?
11:44No.
11:44One of the hardest things in this competition for me is not knowing what the other designers
11:48are doing in their homes.
11:50And then we'll come back to these and the island at the same time.
11:52It's hard to game plan when you don't know what you're game planning against.
11:56I have plans for it.
11:57It has to be special because it is such a focal point.
12:00I have so many ideas, but I only have so much money.
12:04So I have to figure out where I'm going to spend my money, what's going to give me the
12:07biggest impact, and I'm already questioning every decision I've made.
12:19One of the hardest things in this competition for me is not knowing what the other designers
12:23are doing in their homes.
12:25And then we'll come back to these and the island at the same time.
12:27It's hard to game plan when you don't know what you're game planning against.
12:31We've got to go work harder.
12:32Come on.
12:33You know what's going to win this competition?
12:34Work.
12:38This will be the bottom, so you grab that side.
12:41As far as the kitchen goes, this is the masterpiece of my home.
12:45So I need to make sure that it is right in line with how I design.
12:48Dripping in luxury.
12:50If I'm going to get the look that I want on this budget, I'm going to have to use every
12:54design trick that I've got.
12:55I love brass.
12:56Anybody who knows me knows this, and I love brass shim stock.
13:00Do we have enough or not?
13:01That's going to be really close.
13:03You can, in essence, wrap anything in it.
13:05That looks nice.
13:06Awesome.
13:07I would say total cost for one of these to make.
13:1040 bucks?
13:11This is how we win.
13:16This is a brand new house, and so I'm trying to save as much as I possibly can.
13:21Most of the cabinets I'm going to be able to use in a different way.
13:24The countertops I'm going to repurpose, which allows me to splurge in other areas, like
13:28a $4,000 natural stone countertop made of dolomite.
13:31The centerpiece of my entire kitchen.
13:36Oh my goodness!
13:37What do you think?
13:39They're beautiful!
13:40Should we bring it in?
13:42Yeah!
13:43I'm going big.
13:44I don't want to lose again.
13:46Woo!
13:47Okay.
13:51Fingers out.
13:52Yeah!
13:53I'm super excited.
13:55I mean, it looks beautiful.
13:57This is definitely what's going to set me apart from the competition, and this is how I'm
14:01going to win.
14:02What do you think?
14:02You good?
14:03Yeah.
14:03Are you okay?
14:04Yep.
14:04We're in.
14:05Oh, yeah.
14:06That looks good.
14:07Oh, look.
14:09Who is it?
14:09Oh, it's Drew.
14:10Hey, guys.
14:11Hi, Drew.
14:11Hi, Drew.
14:12Looks like your kitchen renovation's underway.
14:14I'm also working, house touring.
14:16Yeah, we're getting there.
14:17Well, make them great, because for this week's challenge, a contractor whose renovation experience
14:21is unmatched, Mike Holmes, star of Homes and Homes, will be there to judge your kitchens.
14:26Mike Holmes is very detail-oriented and very focused on doing things the right way and
14:31the best of the right ways.
14:32Matter of fact, mine's going to replace everything.
14:34But I'm still pretty confident with my design plan.
14:37So, the master suites are done.
14:39How are you feeling about your budgets?
14:43We need money.
14:44I think we're out of money.
14:45Let's just say $175,000 goes pretty fast when you're renovating on this scale, right?
14:48Yes.
14:49One of the things that can be a big budget killer are material costs.
14:52Material costs are killing us.
14:54So, being the nice guy that I am, I found something to give you some extra help while
14:57renovating your kitchens.
14:58But you're going to have to roll up your sleeves and put in some work to get it.
15:01Well, I got him.
15:02Drew, we don't need more work.
15:03We need money.
15:04I'm having it delivered today, so keep an ear out for it.
15:08An ear?
15:09I'm pretty sure you'll know when it's there.
15:10Okay.
15:11Have fun and get creative, guys.
15:13Oh, yeah, and you're welcome.
15:14Bye, Drew.
15:14Bye.
15:15What is he talking about?
15:17You're out.
15:17It's going to make noise, and it's for our kitchen.
15:22I can't imagine.
15:23I bet you it's a blender.
15:24Go right there.
15:26All I know is I have every single building material that I need, so it really more or less
15:31just terrifies me.
15:35Okay, well, that's a horn.
15:36My date's here.
15:38Oh, my gosh.
15:40Whoa.
15:43What is that?
15:51What?
15:51Oh, God.
15:52There's a barn in the middle of the neighborhood?
15:54What is happening?
15:56I don't know if it's for us, if one of us gets it, if all of us get it.
15:58I don't even know what's here.
15:59What are we going to do with that thing?
16:00They've outdone themselves.
16:03This is our present.
16:04This is crazy.
16:05I love it.
16:06Right?
16:07I think, yeah.
16:07No, that's ours.
16:08Wait, do we even know if we get this?
16:10What is this?
16:12Who's that?
16:13What?
16:14Oh, my goodness.
16:18Oh, my gosh.
16:20Whoa.
16:20Nicole Curtis is a fellow renovator.
16:37She's been doing it way longer than I have, and she usually has a lot of history in her
16:41home, so she's able to reincorporate it, and we obviously have no history here.
16:45Hi, guys.
16:45Hi.
16:48It's Nicole Curtis driving a Mack truck.
16:50Here to give us a barn.
16:53Only on HGTV.
16:55Oh, my gosh.
16:58I do these huge renovations on really cool houses that have so much character, so I thought
17:04I'd bring a little something, or I mean, a big something for you guys to use to add some
17:09character to your spaces.
17:11There's so many great pieces in this.
17:13There's great cladding.
17:14There's beams, but there's tons of patchwork to it, too, and the trick to all this is this
17:20first come, first serve for the picking.
17:23Hey.
17:24This is a lovely present.
17:25Thank you so much, Drew and Nicole.
17:26Having to incorporate the barn into the kitchen is not a bonus for me, but it may really help
17:34out one of the other girls.
17:35I don't know.
17:37Hopefully it doesn't.
17:38Listen, I know this is a competition, but be nice, Steve.
17:43Don't blame me.
17:44I'm the nicest one here.
17:46Be nicely.
17:47I'm the nicest one here.
17:48This barn, the wood on it is nearly 100 years old.
17:52I'm so glad that you guys are going to be able to salvage this and give it new life in your
17:56spaces.
17:57So are you guys ready to take this great thing?
18:00Awesome.
18:01Can't wait to see what you guys do with this stuff, but I gotta go.
18:04So I'll see you guys later.
18:05Bye.
18:06Bye.
18:07Let's go.
18:08Oh, my gosh.
18:09Bring it in.
18:10They're coming in.
18:11Oh, my gosh.
18:12Is she going to drive us away?
18:20She's so cool.
18:21Bye-bye, truck.
18:25Let's go.
18:26Let's go.
18:27Let's go.
18:28Look out, Mia.
18:29Oh, that's mine.
18:30Ari, that was my award.
18:33First come, first serve.
18:35It's a great game.
18:37It's a great game.
18:38It's a great game.
18:39It's a great game.
18:40It's a great game.
18:41First come, first serve.
18:42Sometimes it helps to be a runner.
18:43I'm not running unless it's exercise.
18:45Even then, I'm not running.
18:47I need 11 boards.
18:49We're on three.
18:51Just three.
18:52Our strategy is just anything we can get our hands on, that's what we want.
18:56There we go.
18:57Jeez, that's heavy.
18:58Since I really have no idea what I'm going to do with this wood, I'm just taking everything
19:02I can and hoarding it.
19:04At the very least, I've taken some materials away from the other girls.
19:07Get it!
19:08Heads up!
19:09Ari, are you free?
19:10I need more help.
19:11I'm busy.
19:12I think they all want what I have.
19:13Woo!
19:14Stand back.
19:15Which is Ari.
19:16Hey, look at this.
19:17Third board coming out.
19:18He's been with me 10 years.
19:19He's always been my secret weapon.
19:20It's like I want to take out an insurance policy on the guy.
19:21Now, we can't get our other beams without it being over, or the structure will fall down.
19:27You're welcome to help.
19:28Come on, let's help Steve so we can get this knocked over.
19:31I'm just playing until you guys are out there.
19:33I'm just playing until you guys are out there.
19:34I think they all want what I have.
19:35Woo!
19:36Stand back.
19:37Which is Ari.
19:38Hey, look at this.
19:39Third board coming out.
19:40He's been with me 10 years.
19:41He's always been my secret weapon.
19:42It's like I want to take out an insurance policy on the guy.
19:43You're welcome to help.
19:44Come on, let's help Steve so we can get this knocked over.
19:48I'm just playing until you guys are out of the way.
19:51We good?
19:52Oh, yeah.
19:53Get it, Mina!
19:54Mina went for it with that forklift.
19:56That was sick.
20:01Woo!
20:02She's such a badass.
20:03That's so fun.
20:04I love it.
20:05That was awesome.
20:07See?
20:08And your pieces are still intact.
20:09There's a lot to do now, thanks to Drew.
20:16We're using the wood to wrap around the window in the dining room.
20:20This is the perfect solution.
20:22They put this much trim on.
20:24I want this much trim on.
20:27Now we're talking.
20:28Really?
20:29Heck yeah.
20:30So I've got this two panel square door.
20:40The top panel I'm going to remove and put frosted glass.
20:43And then on the bottom panel I'm going to accent it with some of the reclaimed wood from the barn.
20:47This looks awesome.
20:48It's turning out really cool.
20:49All right, I'm going to put some knobs on.
20:51I'm going to fill this hole with Bondo and I'm taping the backside so it has something to land to.
20:55Corey is my project manager in Indianapolis.
20:59He can fix a lot of random things.
21:02He's a good partner in crime.
21:03All right, that's the spirit.
21:05See you shining.
21:06Peter, what have you done to Dale's countertops?
21:09Protecting them.
21:10So they've got their quartz over here.
21:12Yep.
21:13But here they've got this beautiful natural stone and this UV coating is going to make it so that the stone acts almost like quartz.
21:19Exactly.
21:20Do you think any of the other girls are doing this in their houses?
21:22I know that they're not doing anything.
21:24This countertop is my secret weapon, but the stone is actually porous.
21:29So I'm going to add a UV coating to it.
21:31I may not be as experienced as the other designers, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve.
21:36Is that it?
21:37Yep.
21:38Woo!
21:39Oh my.
21:40So we'll sand this down, get that nice honed finish on it, and then we can have a party.
21:44That's right.
21:45Yeah.
21:46You ready to go?
21:47I'm keeping this.
21:48Okay.
21:49Cheers.
21:50One of my strategy moves is keeping some of the appliances and white cabinets.
21:54This is going to allow me to put money into some other luxury items like the countertops and the slab backsplash.
22:00Mina, your slab's here.
22:01But if it's not perfect, it could cause me the competition.
22:04That stone has arrived for the countertops and the island, and it looks beautiful until I see it next to my white cabinets and realize this looks not the way I want it to look.
22:18You thought I was going to be more white, correct?
22:20Yeah.
22:21I wanted statuario.
22:23This is not the right stone.
22:25This definitely looks a little bit grayer than anticipated.
22:28This one is creamier, a little muddier, and next to the crisp white cabinets, it looks even muddier.
22:35I'm not going to win with it looking like this.
22:37It looks cheap and confusing.
22:40They up.
22:41Yikes.
22:42This could screw the whole deal.
22:43Yeah.
22:44This is all .
22:47That stone has arrived for the countertops, and I'm super excited until I see it next to my white cabinets and realize this is not the right stone.
23:00Yikes.
23:06It's a pretty quartz.
23:07It's just not the right quartz for the design plan I had for the kitchen, which was crisp, stark white.
23:12So the white cabinets look like crap next to it.
23:15The only thing I can do is paint the cabinets.
23:19So all of the cabinets need to be painted in?
23:22Yeah.
23:25We should walk away for a second.
23:26Oh, yeah.
23:27We should go cool off somewhere.
23:28There's a huge amount of pressure to get this done.
23:30There's only so much time in the day, and we don't have the money to change things.
23:34It's hot.
23:35I don't have the brain power.
23:36So this is just one more thing that's like, ugh.
23:39I'm just scared of my decision.
23:41We have enough time to even paint all these cabinets.
23:43It's not an option, Cory.
23:45There's some good stuff going in.
23:51The counters are in.
23:52They look incredible.
23:54Where I'm going to add value the most in the kitchen is definitely the appliances.
23:58They're brand new.
23:59They feel like this beautiful, retro, clean white.
24:02That's awesome.
24:06Nice!
24:07The biggest risk I'm taking is no uppers.
24:10It looks like there's minimal storage.
24:13But in fact, I kind of just allocated it to another area.
24:16And it'll be interesting to see if Mike Holmes likes that.
24:21So today we're installing the beautiful quartz countertops in the kitchen.
24:25Buyers are going to love that.
24:26This increases the value immediately.
24:28I would say after 160 plus kitchens, I know what I'm doing.
24:34Heavy.
24:35Yeah.
24:36Are you guys doing all the countertops?
24:38Uh, yeah.
24:39This one?
24:40Yeah.
24:41Leanne.
24:42Same material?
24:43Same material?
24:44No.
24:45Formica.
24:46Formica!
24:47Ha ha!
24:48Guess what Formica doesn't get you?
24:52Higher price points.
24:55When it comes to the kitchen, I feel like the designers don't really have a shot.
25:02George, this looks awesome.
25:03It's so pretty!
25:05Every piece is custom cut, chiseled out, put in layer by layer.
25:11Of course, as you can see right here.
25:14It's so good.
25:15Being from California, it gives me an advantage.
25:17I mean, I know what buyers want, and they're going to love this walnut extended countertop.
25:22This is what is going to sell this house.
25:23This is what is going to sell this house.
25:24Yeah, I hope so.
25:25It's gorgeous.
25:26Team Jasmine!
25:27Team Jasmine!
25:31I'm bummed.
25:32Painting the cabinets was not in my plan, so I'm going to have to cut costs for some other spaces,
25:37which means they aren't really going to be my complete vision.
25:40But this is a competition, and the cabinets aren't right, so I have to pick some.
25:44So this is the result of my freak out.
25:46I love it.
25:47Taking it a little bit more in this putty direction allows the countertop and backsplash to be more like the white color we wanted.
25:55They're shutting us down.
26:15For what?
26:16Like a permit issue.
26:18What is it?
26:20Structural changes not to code.
26:24One down.
26:25Three to go.
26:26So I know a little something about these.
26:27They're always terrifying.
26:28That's how let me get the girls.
26:29I'm trying to have a little
26:44on with the girls, but, you know, I think it's the fight.
26:50Now I'm worried because I agree with you.
26:53It's fun.
26:54and stop them in their tracks.
26:59I mean, this is funny.
27:00This one's my funniest.
27:02This is a problem.
27:04Because we don't have enough time for this.
27:06I thought everything was done right.
27:09Say, City of Santa Clarita, read me your violation code.
27:12Hello.
27:13Hey, this is Steve Ford.
27:16Yes, this is City of Santa Clarita.
27:18Are you calling about the violation code?
27:21How'd you know?
27:22Weird.
27:23Stop work order.
27:24You're performing work that violates the following construction code.
27:27Pay the fine of $1,000.
27:29Uh, please hold.
27:31Can you please read me your violation number?
27:33412-720.
27:36Looks like that violation code is in regards to too much white paint.
27:41Permission to carry on.
27:42Thanks, boss.
27:44Over and out.
27:45All right, let's get to work.
27:46I think that I scare people.
27:49I think I scare people in general just because I'm scary.
27:51They got me at first, though.
27:52You see a red tag.
27:53Yeah.
27:55Good.
28:02Check out this bad boy.
28:04Bop!
28:05So Mike Holmes is coming in.
28:07We are frantically working until we hit the finish line because there's still an obscene amount of work to do.
28:12Our gold faucet and our gold pot filler are going in, and with the cement sink, it all just looks really, really cool.
28:18This is like plumbing jewelry.
28:20I hope Mike will be blown away.
28:22So the fact that we didn't even need this stuff, and now all of a sudden we trim up the whole thing, it actually works.
28:29Yeah, it looks really nice.
28:30Pantry, very important.
28:31It's just like a master closet.
28:32You've got to make sure it's designed well.
28:34I've upgraded the look a little bit with the thick, chunky face frame out of the reclaimed wood that they gave us.
28:39We took three boards while everyone else is busting their butts getting it, and our three boards got us all the face frame, and this pantry looks like a million bucks.
28:47We're here to just win, win, win.
28:50We only have a couple hours left before Mike comes.
28:53We get to get hardware on.
28:55We still have to put lighting up.
28:56I have to put pretty things in the shelf.
28:59We gots to hustle.
29:00I want this to all be white dishes.
29:03Okay.
29:03So my kitchen is really coming along.
29:05The refrigerator moving to the other side of the room really made a big difference, so I can build out this awesome, entertaining mall.
29:11Where'd you get this?
29:12This is from the barn.
29:13Oh, really?
29:14Yeah.
29:14I realized I had no countertop, because there's going to be a wine fridge.
29:17Gotcha.
29:17Then I'm going to hang wine glasses here.
29:19Nice.
29:19So cool.
29:21Let's get the furniture in.
29:23Yeah.
29:23Oh, we're working down to the wire.
29:25Back to the kitchen.
29:26Oh, for you.
29:27It's hectic, and it's hot.
29:28We need everything moving.
29:30Come on.
29:30Here, these are good.
29:32You have to tighten it more than that, MJ.
29:35My staging needs to be on point in this competition, because although it doesn't necessarily factor into the value of the home, but it's really going to help the judges visualize the living space.
29:45Mike Holmes has an eagle eye.
29:47He sees everything.
29:48I have to have every single detail buttoned up before he gets here.
29:52Come on, you guys.
29:53I can't be doing paint touch-ups.
29:54Come on.
29:55Get this place perfect.
29:56We have 15 minutes.
30:01Do something.
30:02Get it perfect.
30:03I've definitely had some setbacks, but seeing all the space come together, I feel like I've got this.
30:12It's perfect.
30:13I'm feeling good, feeling confident, but I don't know what Mike's going to do or what Mike's going to like.
30:18So when a control freak loses control, it just, like, instills fear, and fear turns into so many different things.
30:24Knock, knock.
30:26That's where I am at.
30:26I put everything that I have into this kitchen.
30:36I'm confident, but I'm just nervous about Mike, because I have no clue what he's going to say.
30:41So take me through it.
30:42Without your clipboard.
30:44We'll leave it right there.
30:45I have a good memory.
30:46Okay, good.
30:46Okay.
30:52So this was where the fridge was originally.
30:54When people are walking through a home, they are going right to the kitchen, and they are looking at those appliances.
30:59Dripping in five-star.
31:00We've actually repurposed cabinets to make this custom coffee bar.
31:05The morning cafe.
31:06Right?
31:07Yes.
31:07And then I really wanted an open-shell concept.
31:09You can display things, and at the same time, you're forced to keep it neat.
31:14Now, I heard a barn showed up.
31:16Yes.
31:16Tell me what you did with it.
31:18We faced all of the pantry shelves with it.
31:20Oh, I see.
31:21Love this centerpiece.
31:22What is this?
31:23So that's a reclaimed piece from Chicago.
31:25Coffees, teas, you could place it.
31:26You could do anything in there.
31:28Love that you've used the quartz countertops.
31:30And then you brought it onto the backsplash.
31:32Big choice.
31:33You pick the big dollar value here.
31:35You put in a full oven stove.
31:37And this is a commercial grade.
31:39The BTU's on this earth.
31:40I know the stove.
31:41You went with a porcelain sink.
31:43Why?
31:44It's just a cleaner look.
31:47When he sees my sink and picks up that clipboard, I'm immediately going, he's going to talk about it like having some kind of etching on it.
31:53Which, by the way, you can clean in like two seconds.
31:55I got a note on my sink, don't you?
31:57I can't show you my notes.
31:58They're top secret.
31:59Okay.
32:00Floors.
32:04You chose the floors, yes?
32:06I did.
32:06When it came to just the function, I thought vinyl worked better for everyday use.
32:12Man, there is some things I see.
32:14I'm not going to tell you.
32:15Well, come on.
32:15I'm not done yet.
32:16Nope.
32:16The waterfall is a great feature.
32:18The best thing you can do is get that grain to follow the waterfall down.
32:22And in this case, it's not a perfect tie.
32:27Because there's a repeat pattern, you actually don't have a vein that continues on this side.
32:31But they did use just two slabs.
32:34Anything else you want to say to me before I leave?
32:36You're welcome.
32:38Oh, you are freaking awesome.
32:42There are so many moving pieces in this kitchen.
32:44I mean, literally, every measurement counts.
32:47Everything has to come together.
32:48If something isn't perfect, I know Mike Holmes is going to notice it and he's going to call me out on it.
32:53Hi.
32:54How are you, Jasmine?
32:55I can't believe you're in my kitchen.
32:56I am in your kitchen.
32:58Why don't you take me on a tour?
33:05So I put laminate floors in.
33:08This is a really good looking floor.
33:09Very nice.
33:10I move my fridge to the other side of the kitchen.
33:14Love the carpets.
33:15My carpenter and I built them and then we line the backs of them with antique elm.
33:19And then this is actually reclaimed wood that we got from a barn.
33:23We added the wine fridge and this is like the entertainer's paradise.
33:27Why not?
33:28Why not?
33:28I kind of like that, so that's good.
33:31Original countertop, yes?
33:33Here.
33:34This is dolomite, which is super porous, but I did a UV cured acrylic on it.
33:42And now it's as durable as quartz, if not more.
33:46Unless you put a hot pot on it.
33:47Well, you wouldn't put a hot pot because that's over here.
33:50A lot of people grab a hot pot, they just don't think, and they put it down.
33:53It can be warm.
33:54It just can't be like straight off the oven.
33:56That's the downfall.
33:57I expected Mike to be impressed by my countertops, and he's really not.
34:02You extended the length, so let's talk about that.
34:04So the old island was about right here.
34:07So I added this live edge slab.
34:09I took the clamps off about 20 minutes ago, and my wood popped.
34:15I saw it.
34:16Do you have any advice for me?
34:17This is going to continue to want to crown up.
34:19I would pin into the counter, pin back into the wood, and I would actually pin both sides.
34:25Yeah.
34:25It's one of those things we're going to have to fix before this house sells.
34:28Agreed.
34:28Oh, I have one more thing to show you.
34:30You do.
34:30Check this out.
34:33Oh, I like that feature.
34:34Good job.
34:35Thank you so much.
34:36I'm going to make a ton of notes.
34:37Oh, my gosh.
34:38Okay.
34:41Mike coming by to judge is a good thing for some of us, a bad thing for me.
34:48He's not very designy, frou-frou.
34:52I am.
34:53Hi, Mike.
34:55Leanne, how are you?
34:56I'm good.
34:57How are you?
34:57I'm loving the look.
34:59This is really different.
35:06We took off the uppers.
35:08We have no upper cabinets.
35:09Makes this place feel more like a room, less like a kitchen.
35:13Tell me about the stone.
35:14I really wanted this to feel like it's been here more than five days.
35:20We did a grout wash on it, which I think I invented.
35:24A grout wash?
35:24We used grout to whitewash it.
35:26That's inventive.
35:28What did you do with the barn?
35:29We wrapped it around the window.
35:31I love the texture.
35:32Big trim.
35:34No baseboard.
35:34Love that you changed the stove, took out the gas top, took out the pantry, and you'll
35:41have the walkthrough to the dining room.
35:43Changed the countertops.
35:44Yes, sir.
35:44Pure white.
35:45This is actually the synthesized solid surfacing.
35:48It's daring.
35:50Cool.
35:51I can see things I wouldn't have done.
35:53I'm not sure Mike truly sees the value that I put into this space.
35:56Concrete floor.
35:57Did you seal the floor?
35:58Oh, yeah.
35:59It's a matte sealer.
36:00You spill wine on this.
36:01It's going to absorb into it.
36:03We did.
36:03Have you spilt anything yet?
36:04Every day.
36:05I honestly believe in Perfectly Imperfect.
36:08You are really unique.
36:09It's terribly risky.
36:11I like taking rest.
36:12Good job.
36:13Thanks, Mike.
36:14I will see you in a bit.
36:15All right.
36:16Be nice to me.
36:17This walkthrough is about to happen any second, and I'm feeling very excited, but a little
36:22anxious.
36:23Oh, look at that.
36:24You're bribing me with food.
36:24That works.
36:25I know.
36:25I've got wine, too.
36:26Yeah.
36:27Do you know the first thing that caught my eye?
36:33What?
36:34You have a water tap for a pot.
36:37Yes.
36:38You are the only one that did this.
36:39Really?
36:40Allison did this?
36:41Nobody did this.
36:41That's surprising.
36:42This is a big plus for you.
36:44Okay.
36:45Allison probably has a $12,000 stove, so I'm just going to take my little pot filler win
36:49and go to my corner.
36:50We thought a lot about, you know, splurge on this, keep the cooktop.
36:54We didn't rearrange the whole kitchen, but we did get a nice little panel-ready dishwasher.
36:58Same thing with the fridge.
36:59Extreme handles.
37:00These are actually towel bars because I couldn't find what I wanted.
37:04It's unique.
37:05Put it this way, I've never seen it before.
37:06Yeah.
37:07Herringbone, tell me about what you chose.
37:09I did an EVP because it's a family home, so I wanted something that's super durable.
37:14It was a really good call.
37:19Making it functional, the countertops I chose, I love Carrera marble, but it's so butter soft,
37:24so it went with the quartz instead.
37:26Big fancy farm sink.
37:27So tell me about the concrete.
37:29I spent a good chunk of change on this.
37:31It's actually attractive, but the other flaws in that is that it still can absorb.
37:36One of Mike's concerns is the concrete sink.
37:39Concrete is a porous material and can absorb things, but that's just a potential.
37:44It's not a for sure.
37:45I love the big bulky legs at the end of the countertop.
37:48It's like a big piece of furniture.
37:52What's catching my eye here is your door to the pantry.
37:56That's our barn salvage material.
37:58Just like a cute little detail.
37:59Okay.
38:00You got one craft load of storage space.
38:02You really do.
38:05I can see a lot of people liking this.
38:09I'm going to make a ton of notes and I'll see you real soon.
38:10All right.
38:11Good job.
38:11Thank you, sir.
38:18We got some competitive girls here.
38:20I'm not intimidated by anyone this week.
38:22No.
38:23I really don't know much about what any of these girls are doing in their houses.
38:27I'm nervous about all of them in different ways.
38:30I'm nervous that, you know, maybe I didn't make the right choices.
38:32Maybe the other girls made better choices.
38:35I just don't know.
38:36I'm feeling really anxious.
38:42I'm pretty nervous.
38:43I mean, Mike likes my kitchen, but he wasn't as impressed with the countertops as I'd hoped.
38:48So hopefully he can see past that.
38:50In one week, I made the most sophisticated kitchen out of all of us.
38:55Ladies, I didn't know what to expect coming in here and looking at four kitchens.
39:01Are they going to be similar?
39:02Are they really going to look too much alike?
39:05So, Mina, let's start with you.
39:07Okay.
39:09You chose a herringbone.
39:11Uh-huh.
39:11And that flooring actually was extremely resilient.
39:14Great.
39:16You didn't change the oven location and you didn't change the fridge location.
39:20But you did add a ton of extra cupboards.
39:24Unlike Leanne, your cupboards, they're really not there.
39:28Love you changed the stove.
39:30I love that you actually changed the pantry.
39:33Your wood around your window.
39:34Yeah.
39:35Yeah.
39:36But you like imperfection.
39:38That's why you chose the concrete floor.
39:39It's not for every homeowner.
39:41But that unique homeowner will definitely come in and buy that house on the spot.
39:46Allison, the waterfall that you chose using your countertop and bringing that quartz up on the
39:52backsplash to the wall, I think that's all wonderful.
39:55Love that you changed the stove.
39:56Love the cappuccino maker.
39:59I mean, a built-in espresso machine, I would never even have thought of that.
40:05Flooring.
40:05Even though it was a great color choice, there is a problem with the installation.
40:10And that is, you should be staggered on all pieces.
40:14There's too many joints that are side by side.
40:16I didn't install it.
40:17Well, then you better give someone crap because when I see that and I don't like it, it's not
40:21a good thing.
40:22Hear that?
40:23Okay.
40:23I didn't do it.
40:23Jasmine, that entertainment center you made, I really liked that.
40:30It stood out of the flooring.
40:32Now the countertop.
40:34Walnut.
40:34When you tried to tie that into the countertop, that's not such a good thing because that wood
40:39is going to want to continue to come up.
40:41It could snap.
40:44I've been brought here today to pick one kitchen that every family is going to want to not only
40:50live in, but put their money on.
40:53The winner of the best kitchen that I see is.
40:59I feel like I'm the front runner and I definitely added the most value to my kitchen.
41:04I'm feeling good.
41:06I know my choices are about to pay off.
41:12Allison.
41:15I wanted it so bad.
41:19Allison won the kitchen, which makes sense.
41:22She's a kitchen girl.
41:23I get it.
41:25I needed that win.
41:27I mean, if you're the kitchen crasher for nine seasons and you don't win.
41:29You better win the kitchen.
41:30The thing that really set your kitchen apart, Allison, was you had a solution for everything.
41:36I think when it comes time to appraise your home, that kitchen is going to be a big factor.
41:41I can already see Allison and Ab.
41:43This is why I'm here.
41:44And if I'm winning the kitchen, I'm winning all of it because that is the hub of the home and that is where you appraise higher.
41:50I'm not leaving without the big W.
41:52And the next space that you will design and renovate is the great room and outdoor living area.
42:00It definitely sucks to lose, but what I'm banking on is these very objective points that an actual appraiser is going to be looking at because I think that's, like, the big win.
42:11Honestly, I think we'll see.
42:15Well, I have no idea who's going to win.
42:17This is a tough one.
42:18I put a lot of work into this kitchen, and I'm now 0 for 2.
42:22That was definitely not part of my plan.
42:27This season on Rock the Block.
42:30I'm not looking to lose this thing.
42:31It's amazing how fast $175,000 will go.
42:35Cash money, baby.
42:37Go, go.
42:37I love Drew.
42:38How are the house renovations coming along?
42:40Good.
42:40Pretty good.
42:41I hate surprises.
42:42Oh, my God.
42:43Is it on all of it?
42:44Yeah.
