00:00Previously on Rock the Block, here's some of the best in the business.
00:04Four of HGTV's top designers have $175,000 each to renovate four identical homes.
00:10You can completely redesign whatever you want to do.
00:13The tough part, you'll have just four weeks to add as much value as possible.
00:16The designers don't really have a shot.
00:18They started with the master suites.
00:20You're going down, girls.
00:22Where Leanne transformed the bathroom into a one-of-a-kind oasis.
00:25It was all about this massive gorgeous tub, this gorgeous shower.
00:29And took the win.
00:30Next, they tackled the hub of the home, the kitchen.
00:33This is a huge competition.
00:35Where Alison reigns supreme.
00:37Congratulations, Alison.
00:38With her sophisticated style.
00:40If I'm winning the kitchen, I'm winning all of it.
00:43Tonight.
00:44I've got a lot to prove because I have yet to win.
00:46With only two weeks left, the designers take on the riskiest space yet, the great room and outdoor living space.
00:53Losing to any of these girls would be a dagger to the heart.
00:56And HGTV star Tiffany Brooks.
00:58Hey, guys.
00:59Sends them to the world-renowned Rose Bowl flea market.
01:02$1,000 spending cash for each of you.
01:05Whoa.
01:06And then expert renovators Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt from 100 Day Dream Home show up to judge their spaces.
01:11Molding adds to value.
01:13So if you take that out, where are we replacing that?
01:15Gosh, I just love how it all opens out to that backyard.
01:18Bringing one designer one step closer to being crowned the champion.
01:22Can we fight to the death?
01:23Yes.
01:24Four of HGTV's top designers.
01:28This place needs some fun.
01:29Four weeks.
01:30What?
01:31One chance to add the most value.
01:33Four amazing renovations.
01:35Yeah.
01:35And one winner to rule them all.
01:37I think we're winning it.
01:39It's fun.
01:39You know what's going to win this competition?
01:42Work.
01:47I want to make my great room greater.
01:51It's week three, and we are all working on the great room and the backyard living area.
01:55I'm feeling super confident after my kitchen win.
01:58Congratulations, Allison.
02:00In this competition, I am a predator, and everyone else is my prey.
02:04I just need to keep up the momentum, because if I can win the great room and the outdoor area, I could probably win the whole thing.
02:10A lot of people get anxiety when they scream.
02:12When you walk in the front door, this is what you see.
02:17I haven't won anything yet.
02:18Last week, I went big with my kitchen countertop.
02:21I added this live edge slab, and my wood popped.
02:24I saw it.
02:25And Mike Holmes wasn't impressed.
02:27That's the downfall.
02:28I want to win this week, so I have to go over the top with my design.
02:32Let's talk about the great room and the outdoor space, right?
02:35Uh-huh.
02:36Last week, we did a gorgeous kitchen, but Allison won, which makes sense.
02:40She's a kitchen girl.
02:40I'm just going to stay true to my style.
02:43It's all about that vacation life.
02:44It's really important for me to stay in budget, but I feel good.
02:48The house is coming along beautifully.
02:50Yes.
02:51I'm disappointed about losing again.
02:53Jasmine and I are both looking for our first wins this week, and I know she wants it just as badly as I do.
02:58I want to make sure we put money in the right places to really increase our value.
03:02Renovating to increase appraised value is what I do.
03:05That's what my business is based on.
03:07This space is really going to kind of be what pulls us ahead.
03:10But last week's kitchen and dining...
03:12The other flaws in that is that it still can absorb.
03:15Made me realize that I might have maybe played it too safe, so I'm going to have to go a little bit crazier on this next area.
03:23So in the great room, we've got a fireplace.
03:25Do the TV above it.
03:26Maybe some shelves, some built-ins.
03:29We've got the herringbone flooring in the kitchen dining area.
03:31I want to carry that into the great room.
03:33I want to do the accordion doors here so this whole thing can be open.
03:37I like it.
03:38So this is all our backyard right here, right?
03:40What are we going to do?
03:41The outdoor fireplace, which we already have the whole cut for.
03:44It's going to be huge for the backyard landscaping.
03:46Get a pergola.
03:47I think back in this corner, because this is all going to be turf.
03:50I love it.
03:51Getting so close to the end of the competition, every day counts, every decision counts, and every dollar counts.
03:58You think we're going to win?
03:59Yeah, I do.
04:00Up in Santa Clarita, it is way hotter.
04:03We have a lot of desert landscape.
04:05So I want to play off the soft colors of the desert.
04:08With my kitchen being the winner, all I'm going to do is take that kitchen feel and look and just marry it into those two spots.
04:15My whole design angle is always vintage and modern.
04:17I want to make sure it looks sophisticated, and that's exactly what I'm doing here.
04:22To me, that's what sells a home.
04:24This is how we're going to add value.
04:25The doors.
04:27$20,000 stacking doors.
04:30They're going to have a grid system.
04:31They're going to be beautiful.
04:32Beam work here, fireplace, and built-in.
04:35We've got the mantel from Chicago.
04:37I want cabinetry left and right, so it's form, function, storage, the whole nine yards.
04:43Leading to the outdoor is where I need to just wow the appraiser.
04:48Fireplace here, we'll do this in all like white brick.
04:51Building up some planner boxes here, that's going to up the value big time.
04:55I'm thinking faux turf and then just enhancing a little more with some mature landscape.
04:59Then I think we're winning it.
05:01No, I'm not intimidated by anyone this week.
05:03No, I'm just focused and I know what I'm doing and I've got it down.
05:07I'm not worried.
05:10Simple touches are going to make big impact in here.
05:12For sure.
05:12My plan is I want it to feel a little bit like Mexico, like Greece, just a really calming,
05:19simple, vacation-style home.
05:22I would describe my style as warm minimalism.
05:26Tons of whites, tons of natural elements, different types of texture to make it feel warm.
05:32The great room, it's all about the ceiling, right?
05:35Light wash beams all across.
05:38That'll make the ceiling feel taller, that'll make the room feel bigger, more special.
05:42We're using the subfloor as the floor.
05:45The biggest takeaway for the great room is the bifold doors, being able to open this up really
05:50from wall to wall.
05:51Like doubles the size of the great room.
05:54Yeah.
05:55For the outdoor room, we have the fire pit.
05:57And then for the concrete patio, I'm going to paint a stencil kind of feel on it.
06:02And then it's all about getting some foliage in that back pit.
06:05Yeah, I think the more we can get, the better.
06:06I think all that character between the wood here, stone there, a lot of natural elements
06:11is going to really add some value to this house.
06:12I spent a ton of money in the master and the kitchen.
06:17Every week, my budget gets sadder and sadder and sadder.
06:22I have to really be careful to save some money for the end, because it's hard not to spend
06:26it.
06:27I think this great room and back area is a huge opportunity.
06:31I mean, this is what you see.
06:31You walk in the front door, you're standing in the kitchen, you're looking at the great
06:34room, and you're looking at this backyard.
06:36It's my third week here, and I haven't won anything yet.
06:39I need to go all out with the great room and the outdoor living space.
06:44Let's talk about the great room first.
06:45So in the great room, I'm using reclaimed wood to make this stunning ceiling pattern.
06:50And let's add a big chandelier that'll really bring your eye to the middle of that room.
06:55On this wall, I think we have an opportunity to add a TV, also maybe an electric fireplace,
07:01and make it feel real, because we'll put real logs in a stackable alcove.
07:06Let's blow this wall out at a huge system of glass stacking doors, and extend the ceiling
07:11treatment to connect the great room with this outdoor space.
07:15My design style is California casual.
07:18It's more of a lifestyle than a design.
07:20You know, it's coastal, it's beachy, it's cool.
07:23I'd love to do something that adds a lot of functionality.
07:26A bar that uses the countertop from the island inside, and then maybe we can hang a TV out there
07:31as well.
07:31Definitely fun and functional.
07:33You're outside, it's hotter than everything.
07:35Yeah.
07:36What do you want?
07:37A pool.
07:38There's nothing that we could do out here that's going to add more value than putting
07:41in a pool.
07:42The pool's like the main event in this backyard.
07:44The pool.
07:45It takes a ton of time, and that's something I don't have a lot of.
07:48I only have so much money.
07:50I want to win this week, so I have to go over the top with my design.
07:53This is risking a ton of my budget.
07:55This is it.
07:56This is my Hail Mary.
07:57It's a huge gamble.
07:58So I really want these rafters for the great room.
08:04Budget-wise, we can't do anything fancy.
08:07So we're getting this easy pine and doing an awesome whitewash coat on it, just to give
08:12it some texture.
08:13This is going to be important for the light.
08:15I hope it doesn't get lost in here.
08:17I don't know if these judges are going to get it.
08:32Is this scooting now?
08:38Hey, Ari.
08:39What are they doing over there?
08:41Coming out, I see just these loud trucks.
08:45Creates a lot of curiosity.
08:47What the f*** is this?
08:50I don't know.
08:50I'll go check it out.
08:52No, I'm not going over there.
08:54Come on.
08:57Over there, see that?
08:59Wow.
08:59That is impressive.
09:04They keep the door shut.
09:05They're all looking.
09:05What is happening?
09:06I don't know what she's doing.
09:07It's getting a little crazy now.
09:09She's putting in a pool.
09:11My original fear was Leigh-Anne.
09:13But now that Jasmine's putting in a pool, it kind of gets my mind going a little bit.
09:18It was a big surprise for me.
09:19I mean, I'm not saying she's not good.
09:20It's just, holy f***.
09:22That's a big move.
09:23I'm tired of losing.
09:31So I'm going all in this week with my boldest, riskiest move yet.
09:35Installing a $30,000 pool.
09:37This is the biggest chunk of my budget I've spent on any one item.
09:43I hope I made the right decision, but big risks equal big rewards.
09:48So today, they're going to put the rest of the shock creed in.
09:50This needs to take the pressure of the dirt, the hillsides.
09:53Earthquakes.
09:54Exactly.
09:56For this pool, every single day and literally every single hour counts.
10:01I mean, we're trying to jam what would be like a couple-month project into the week.
10:05Okay, so next steps are coping, tile, plaster.
10:11Jasmine does a cannonball.
10:12So cool.
10:15Jasmine, I know she has a pool.
10:16I know she has a pool because we saw it in Giant Trap.
10:19I don't know if pools create value in California or not.
10:22In Indy, they don't.
10:23They actually take the value of the house down because of upkeep, maintenance issues, things like that.
10:27She's definitely in my head about it.
10:29But I'm just sticking with my plan.
10:30I feel good about it.
10:31We demoed the wall with the windows between the great room and the back patio and put in these incredible bi-fold accordion doors.
10:39So the entire great room space opens up to this amazing patio and it makes it feel so huge.
10:45I've just been trying to be very thoughtful with where I spend my money and not allocate funds to stuff that's just pretty and not necessarily going to increase the value.
10:53Yeah.
10:57Jolene.
10:58Hi.
10:58Hello.
10:59What's happening, gang?
11:00It's Drew.
11:01Oh.
11:01Hi, Drew.
11:02How are the renovations coming along?
11:04Oh, pretty good.
11:05Good.
11:06So far, so good.
11:07I heard from a little birdie that your kitchens were fantastic.
11:10Yeah.
11:11Yep.
11:11I know.
11:12Thanks.
11:13Who's feeling confident?
11:14Yeah.
11:14I'm feeling good.
11:15You're feeling good?
11:16Yeah.
11:16Oh, yeah.
11:17That'd be us.
11:17We're confident.
11:18At the end of the week, we have two of HGTV's newest stars, Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt.
11:22They're going to be judging your great rooms and your outdoor living spaces.
11:25Oh, wow.
11:26All right.
11:26The Kleinschmidt's build homes from the ground up in 100 days, and they know what it takes to sell a house.
11:32So I think they are going to be tough judges.
11:34And to help you do this, I'm sending you to one of the largest open-air markets in the country.
11:38Okay.
11:39All right.
11:39This is getting interesting.
11:41Talk to me.
11:42It's the world-renowned Rose Bowl flea market.
11:44Cool.
11:45When you arrive, a close friend of mine is going to be waiting for you with a little something I think you're going to love.
11:50And by the way, take your contractor's trucks.
11:51You're going to need them.
11:52And don't forget, have fun.
11:54Keep up the good work.
11:55All right.
11:55Thanks, Drew.
11:56Bye.
11:57Bye, Drew.
11:58Bye.
11:58Get your keys.
11:59Let's go.
11:59Never met a flea market I didn't love.
12:01We pull up and Tiffany is waiting there, and she's my girl.
12:23She's my Chicago girl.
12:24She actually won season eight of Design Star on HGTV.
12:28And she's a really talented designer.
12:30I'm sure she's got some sort of surprise for us.
12:33And just being here is a surprise, so that's pretty cool, too.
12:36As you guys can see, there's a big event today.
12:39On the second Sunday of every month, the Rose Bowl hosts the Rose Bowl flea market with over 2,500 vendors and 20,000 guests.
12:48That's a lot of people, y'all.
12:4920,000.
12:50Now, I personally love a good flea market.
12:53It's a great place to score those rare finds and one-of-a-kind gems.
12:57It's also a great way to add value to a house.
13:01That's only if you know what you're looking for.
13:04Now, Drew tells me that you guys are working on your great rooms and outdoor living spaces.
13:08So I've got something here to help you out.
13:12VIP passes and $1,000 spending cash for each of you.
13:17Whoa.
13:18All right.
13:18Wow.
13:19Find something incredible to permanently affix to your house.
13:23That's money.
13:24Oh, yeah.
13:25There is just one more thing.
13:26You only have one hour to make your purchases and get them back into your trucks.
13:31One hour.
13:32And if you don't spend it all, you have to return what you bought.
13:36And I'm taking the money back.
13:38Mean.
13:39Yeah.
13:40Mean, Tiffany.
13:40Mean.
13:41You just have to be very intentional with what we get today.
13:44We only have an hour, so we're in trouble.
13:45It's a pressure cooker out here, and we only have one hour.
13:48I got $1,000.
13:49I got one hour.
13:50And if I don't spend it all, I got to give it back.
13:52Now, come get this money and your passes.
13:54Go, go.
13:55Your time starts now.
13:57Go, have fun, you guys.
14:10The mission is find pieces for the great room, the patio, and or the outdoor space and stand
14:16under $1,000.
14:18An hour, Jazz.
14:19An hour.
14:20There's hammocks for sale.
14:21Don't act like you like them.
14:22How much are they?
14:23I don't really like them.
14:25How about two for $50?
14:26I'll give you two for $60.
14:29That's you.
14:29Okay.
14:30All right, we'll take two of them.
14:31I like that.
14:31That's fun.
14:32These are fun.
14:32My idea is let's find some lights.
14:35That's the goal.
14:36Whoa.
14:37It's a birdcage.
14:38It could be a light.
14:39Yeah.
14:39Or a birdcage.
14:40How much?
14:41$300.
14:42Just hold it.
14:43We don't want the girls to get it.
14:44These are cool.
14:45Those are perfect.
14:46Can you imagine these outside?
14:47So we found these amazing warehouse lights that, of course, need rewired and are so heavy.
14:53But that's why I brought what's-his-name over here.
14:57How much for this whole shebang?
14:58Three of these lights.
14:59$800.
15:00That's good.
15:01That's in our budget.
15:02That's three lights, Steve.
15:03We need to find something for the living room or the outdoor space.
15:07I have no idea what we're looking for.
15:08I want to look at that.
15:09Ooh, it's a dough bowl.
15:10Hi.
15:10Hi, how are you?
15:11This is awesome.
15:12How much is this?
15:13$200.
15:13If we put it above the fireplace and bolt it into the wall, then it becomes this cool architectural
15:19feature.
15:20Can you do any better than $200?
15:22$175 would be the lowest.
15:24Okay.
15:25Hey, look.
15:26Now I have shade.
15:26I got a thousand bucks.
15:28I got one hour.
15:29And if I don't spend it all, I got to give it back.
15:31me.
15:32Think about cabinet hardware.
15:34Yeah.
15:34We don't have that.
15:35These are beautiful.
15:37These are perfect.
15:38Awesome.
15:38Winner in my great room.
15:40We're doing this really great built-in, but I had no cabinet hardware.
15:43So to find something that's this beautiful, solid brass, it was just a great find.
15:48We can hang these above our outdoor bar.
15:50How much?
15:50$150 each.
15:51They're made from an airplane, basically.
15:53$150 each.
15:55Yes.
15:55He's got the money.
15:56These are awesome.
15:58We were just looking at some of these.
16:01Mina was eye spying us, and I don't like that.
16:05She's a little spy.
16:06Seriously?
16:07Yeah.
16:07Go away.
16:08This is actually just defensive purchases, so you don't use them.
16:12You two seem very confident.
16:13It's making me nervous.
16:15All right, sold.
16:16Handed our $200 over, and now we have the makings of a very good-looking vacation house.
16:21Leanne probably is going to buy like that, but she would look at this and make something gorgeous
16:25out of it.
16:25Yeah, but what if we did?
16:26But he said they're lights.
16:27An electrician has to set up a plug on the other end.
16:30That costs money.
16:30Oh, this might be kind of cool over our table.
16:32Over the dining outdoor table.
16:34Leanne's going to think I'm copying her now.
16:35Let's just buy them anyway, so she can't buy them.
16:37Hey, we got to use these, and I think that's cool.
16:39How much is your door?
16:42I think we could get a few of these, and then we could use them to build our outdoor bar.
16:47That's a good idea.
16:48What if we buy all three?
16:52Okay, that seems fair.
16:53Yeah.
16:53Those are cool.
16:56What are those?
16:57Those are gorgeous.
16:58I know that they're surface mount, but I'm thinking, like, what if they're actually sconces?
17:02How much are these?
17:03This is awesome.
17:04This is probably a lot of each.
17:05Do you give them 60?
17:06Yeah.
17:06I didn't even have to go to eat.
17:08What about this for the backyard?
17:09Living wall around it, and then it's all green, and then you just have this awesome fountain.
17:14Yeah.
17:15So it'll all be living wall.
17:16Hi!
17:17Hey!
17:18I love this.
17:19Yeah, it's pretty cool hanging lovese, right?
17:21Yeah, it comes with a cushion.
17:22How much is it?
17:23There's a price, like, it's 848.
17:25I think I have 825.
17:28Oh, 825?
17:30Okay, yeah, sure.
17:31All right.
17:31Hi.
17:31I just feel like we got a deal.
17:33We just found the perfect thing.
17:35It's going to be amazing.
17:36You got it, boo?
17:37I got it.
17:38How much money do we have left?
17:39Like, 300 or 400.
17:41How much is it?
17:43Thanks.
17:44Would you do 40?
17:45Yeah.
17:46Team Jasmine.
17:46I'm excited about this.
17:48I think this is perfect.
17:49Let's go this way.
17:50I think we got to collect our stuff and get back.
17:52Like, 300 lockers?
17:54I love lockers.
17:56Whenever I see lockers, I buy them.
17:57I've used them in all different types of design.
18:00How much are your lockers?
18:01350.
18:03I'll give you whatever is right here.
18:05It's okay.
18:05It's good.
18:06Yeah?
18:06You like it?
18:07There's money.
18:07It's okay.
18:08We got a ton of work to do, and now we've just added to that work.
18:12But if we can integrate all these things into our design, we're going to add a lot of value.
18:16And for $1,000, we've really just made our house that much cooler.
18:20We are the wieners.
18:23Got some good stuff.
18:24I feel like my strategy is just, like, I know this wasn't, like, a contest, but I turned it into one, and I feel like I won.
18:30The hammocks and the kind of hammock chairs are probably going to go outside because we have a fire.
18:35You're a pit.
18:36See you, Rose Bowl.
18:41All right.
18:43Oh, yeah.
18:44Everything made it.
18:45You want to climb in there and get that dough bowl?
18:47Can you get those, so I got this?
18:48Yeah, I mean, these are hotter than hell.
18:49Woo!
18:50Shopping was fun, but I need to check out my stacking doors because they were supposed to be here a while ago, and I just hope they made it.
18:57These aren't it.
18:58Yeah, I, it's been, I don't know where they are.
19:01I think they said another three days, so I'm going to be way behind schedule.
19:06Spend a lot of money on these doors.
19:08I need these to be the standout moment in this great room.
19:11Yeah.
19:11Late once, now I'm going to late again.
19:13Twice.
19:13You know what stress does to the brain?
19:16It starts to kill the little synapses that connect, and all of a sudden your head's clouded.
19:22You're not saying the right things.
19:23We're not talking about that right now.
19:25You're f***ed up.
19:33But these aren't it.
19:34Yeah, I, it's been, I don't know where they are.
19:37So they're just.
19:38Another three days, I heard.
19:39I'm going to be way behind schedule.
19:42Spend a lot of money on these doors.
19:44I need these to be the standout moment in this great room.
19:46I know they were a custom order, but like, at this point, if we don't make the day.
19:50And no doors, no wind.
19:52No.
20:00All we have to do, literally, is nail and glue this up here, and we're done.
20:04I have this custom artistic ceiling pattern that draws your eye to the center of the room.
20:09It's going to be the centerpiece of my house.
20:10And since the materials are relatively inexpensive, this is an easy way to add great value.
20:15I was looking at that ceiling, and I'm like, what could we do that would really bring your eye to the middle of that room?
20:23And the answer was, big chandelier in the middle.
20:25That's going to be a huge value add.
20:27I'm continuing the herringbone from the kitchen into the great room, and I also have the herringbone pattern inside of my outdoor fireplace, so it makes it feel like one cohesive space.
20:40This fireplace is huge.
20:41You could fit, like, ten babies in that fireplace.
20:43Don't put babies in the fireplace.
20:45The one in the living room is a little bit smaller size.
20:48It might seem like overkill to have two fireplaces within 20 feet of each other, especially in California.
20:53But I'm going to say no, it's not.
20:56It's just the right amount of guilt.
20:58I just hope the judges agree with me.
21:01We're going to do this really awesome bonus pergola where a really cool rattan chair swing that I got at the flea market could go.
21:09Going from the patio to the pergola is also going to give this idea of so much added square footage that I'm really hoping the judges and the appraisers are going to love.
21:18Oh, yes!
21:19One of our fun finds, right?
21:25Yeah.
21:25I did find some great stuff at the Rose Bowl that I think are going to up this property value.
21:30These are flush mount fixtures, and now we get to use it like sconces, and that's going to illuminate this beautiful life.
21:37Thank God my stacking doors arrived today and the guys finally installed.
21:41This better put me over the top for the win.
21:45What are we doing, Leighann?
21:46I'm thinking creatively. I'm trying to figure out other ways to make this money last.
21:53I'm not sure of anything right now.
21:55Don't start anything you're not ready for.
21:57I'm going to stencil all six of these cement blocks and create, hopefully, what feels like a tile rug situation.
22:05Okay, this is very risky.
22:08Let's do it.
22:09I'm going to turn it back now.
22:12Nope.
22:13I mean, this is a black stencil on a permanent concrete slab, so there is no turning back.
22:18If I blow it, if I don't like it, we've got an issue.
22:25Let the demolition begin.
22:27HGTV heats up with an all-new Fixer to Fabulous.
22:30We're Dave and Jenny Mars.
22:32Oh, gosh.
22:33And we renovate historic homes in Bentonville, Arkansas.
22:36It's go time.
22:37They take houses from downright draft.
22:39We've got a serious issue here.
22:41To fully fab.
22:43You think we can just end on one high five?
22:45You know I don't high five.
22:46By my butt and set up, I love it.
22:48Don't miss an all-new Fixer to Fabulous.
22:50Tuesday night at 9 on HGTV and HGTV Go.
22:58Turn it back now.
22:59Nope.
23:00I mean, this is a black stencil on a permanent concrete slab, so there is no turning back.
23:05If I blow it, if I don't like it, we've got an issue.
23:09Moment of truth.
23:11Very cool.
23:13Yeah, this is cool.
23:14Phew.
23:14Are you nervous?
23:16Yes.
23:16I'm going to keep working on this.
23:18I think you should go inside.
23:20Check on me in five hours.
23:21We did this tile stencil situation on the back, which gives inside-outside living, which is
23:27so important here in California.
23:28So there are definitely ways we've added value.
23:40The clock is ticking, and I'm nervous.
23:43I'm nervous that, you know, maybe I didn't make the right choices.
23:45Maybe the other girls made better choices.
23:47I'm trying to pay attention to every last detail so I can finally win.
23:54So this is my thought.
23:55First, mantle length.
23:56Right now our overhang's three inches on each side.
23:59Do you like the overhang?
24:00No.
24:01I know.
24:01I hate the overhang.
24:02So do you want it lined up, flush?
24:04Yep.
24:04Yeah.
24:05I just don't know.
24:06I'm feeling really anxious.
24:09The pool's coming along.
24:11It's looking amazing.
24:12We're just going to keep pushing.
24:13And as soon as something's ready, we do it.
24:15And then it has to dry.
24:16And as soon as it's ready, we do the next thing.
24:17I can't wait to have some water in this backyard because it is hot out here.
24:21All right, this is the countertop from the old island.
24:25It's actually perfect for our bar outside.
24:29Brian was able to build it out of three old chippy paint falling apart doors that we got
24:34from the Rose Bowl.
24:35So that's the old.
24:36The countertop is the new.
24:37Let's get to cutting.
24:40A huge thing we're doing to save money is we're legitimately not putting floors in.
24:45But my biggest risk is I'm not using baseboard or trim.
24:49I know I could very well be devaluing this house, but for the aesthetic and the style
24:54I wanted to go for, it was perfect.
24:57I know that's unusual, but I'm going with it.
25:07I'm a very competitive person.
25:10This might be too low.
25:10Will you hold this for a sec?
25:11Not competitive without a reason.
25:13This is what I do for a living.
25:15This competition is geared towards what I do every single day.
25:19I mean, look at these.
25:21Those are gorgeous.
25:21This is what I was born to do.
25:23I have to win.
25:24I don't have a choice.
25:26The idea that I have for my landscaping, I really want that green look.
25:30The only option for me is to do turf.
25:33Especially in California, it's going to be so much better for the value of the house.
25:38Yeah, plants are here.
25:39We don't have much time left to finish these spaces, and after spending so much money on
25:44my pool, I don't really have much money left to add any landscaping around it.
25:49Okay, so these guys, just inside of the mulch there.
25:53Oh, it's hot.
25:55Right now, in order to turn this house around, I'm up against budget, major timeline, which
26:00is honestly ridiculous.
26:01I've got to stay focused.
26:03The back patio is coming along.
26:05The fireplace is about to be put in.
26:07I can't wait to put furniture in this.
26:12The strategy is this.
26:13What you see when you walk in that front door is plush, green, and surrounded by privacy.
26:18It adds a ton of value, but it's a lot of work.
26:22We could do it.
26:23Team hammer.
26:26That should do it.
26:27Two baskets, one light.
26:29You're good.
26:30And you always doubt me.
26:32Let's go!
26:32I really want to impress the clients from it, so I just need to rush, rush, rush, and
26:37get this done.
26:38Things are a little crooked.
26:39They need to be adjusted, all these little things, and I'm super OCD and a control freak,
26:43so all these little things really drive me crazy.
26:46No one else sit on the couch!
26:48With all the trim detail and the big wide doors and the fireplaces, it feels homey, but
26:52also kind of fancy.
26:54I'm super anxious to bring furniture in.
26:57Majorland is cruising right along.
26:59Instead of adding things, we actually took away things.
27:01We simplified this home.
27:03My house is for a very specific customer client.
27:07My design aesthetic is functional, and that becomes a lifestyle.
27:12A house that you walk into and you're like, oh, thank goodness I'm home.
27:16And if I've accomplished that, then yeah, this house will be within my design aesthetic.
27:20These things are huge.
27:22We're coming to an end here, and it really is just all about these final details, whether
27:25it's art or just placing my landscape outside or these little things that make such a big
27:29difference.
27:30You know, that's a big selling point when people can move in and go, I don't need to do anything
27:34to this space, and I just have to bring my accessories and my picture frame and personalize
27:39it.
27:39We nailed it.
27:40I know we did.
27:41In my heart, I feel it.
27:42This is a backyard that I think everybody wants.
27:45Winning is super important to me, and so far, I've won nothing.
27:49So I'm really hoping the Kleinschmidts like my design better than the other girls.
27:53Anybody home?
28:01Anybody home?
28:02Hello!
28:03How you doing?
28:04Welcome!
28:05So the judges for this week are the Kleinschmidts.
28:09It's two people's opinions right now, and I don't know what they're going to think.
28:15Show us what you did.
28:16A few things to point out.
28:17I mean, obviously, we blew open this back wall.
28:25We added a fireplace.
28:26Did a little faux judges paneling.
28:29Ah, judges paneling.
28:31All the built-ins.
28:32I love the built-ins, and I am in love with the details on the flooring.
28:37The herringbone pattern is very unique.
28:39I know it probably cost you a pretty penny.
28:43What was the difference in just leaving it in a straight line versus doing this pattern?
28:46The herringbone lay is about three times more expensive because the labor is about three times more than just doing a standard lay.
28:54The one thing I feel that's a little bit missing is a centerpiece light.
28:58Yep, I was going to say the same thing.
29:00So when you walk in right now, the front door, you go straight out and kind of take everything in.
29:04Whereas if I'd had a big chandelier there, it would have been a showstopper for sure, but it would have stopped you.
29:10There's a rhyme and reason for things that seem like madness, and it all makes perfect sense, at least inside of my head.
29:17Gosh, I just love how it all opens out to that backyard.
29:20Well, do you guys want to go check that outside?
29:21I can't wait to see it.
29:22Yeah, absolutely.
29:27We made some pretty big changes out here.
29:30The first one being this giant fireplace.
29:33I love that you have the option of the ambiance of a fire, indoors or outdoors.
29:42So I am intrigued by this.
29:44What is this?
29:45It's a dough bowl.
29:46I found it at the Rose Bowl Flea Market and just thought it was super cool.
29:50Doing the doors, doing the fireplaces, and making this backyard space completely cohesive.
29:56Oh my gosh.
29:56It's like you've increased your square footage, you know, 1,500, 2,000 square feet.
30:03So I take care of my own grass back in Florida, and this would be a dream come true.
30:10Is this pretty expensive?
30:11The first bid I got on turf was $10 a square foot install.
30:14Oh my gosh.
30:15And I said, heck no.
30:16I made a couple calls and got this for $5.50 a square foot install.
30:20You're a good negotiator.
30:21Yeah.
30:21This is a huge value add to not have to worry about it anymore.
30:25Love the pergola.
30:26Nice work there.
30:27This is just a lot of fun out here.
30:29Yeah.
30:29You can throw some great parties.
30:30Yes.
30:30I love how everything has come together, and it's cozy, and it's comfy, and it's exactly
30:35what I wanted it to be.
30:39Knock, knock.
30:41Hi, Jim.
30:42How are you?
30:43Hey, how are you doing?
30:44Welcome.
30:47Yes.
30:48Tell us about this space.
30:49I wanted your daily home to be your vacation home.
30:52Okay.
30:53First thing I noticed, which is super unique, but no baseboards, no trim, is that you just
30:57ripped all that out?
30:58Mm-hmm.
30:58Oh, yeah.
31:00I know.
31:01You're a builder, huh?
31:02Goes against everything.
31:04It might have to grow on me.
31:05We also did not put flooring in.
31:07I was thinking that, and you know, it does give it kind of like an industrial kind of look.
31:11Like a loft space almost.
31:12Mm-hmm.
31:12We added these rafters up here, which makes the room feel larger, taller.
31:17So all the tricks.
31:18I like that it looks clean.
31:19I'm just looking at it from a value standpoint.
31:21Yeah.
31:21It's almost like you took things away.
31:23Like molding adds to value.
31:25So if you take that out, where are we replacing that?
31:28And even though there's not crown molding and hardwood floors and things like that you
31:32would normally check off the list for appraising, there's a lot of love put into this house
31:37and a lot of oomph.
31:39I hope they appreciate oomph.
31:41Interesting light, too.
31:43This is kind of cool.
31:44This is an old salvage find that we found at the Rose Bowl.
31:47Okay.
31:48So we kind of made this.
31:49We turned it into the light.
31:51Super simple touches.
31:52I just wanted it to be light and airy and lovely and open.
32:00And speaking of open, we did our mega bi-fold door here.
32:04So you can walk right out into this space.
32:07And this is an extension of the great room.
32:08That's exactly right.
32:09Yeah.
32:10So we did this stencil pattern right onto the concrete.
32:13It'll wear down through time, which will be more beautiful and so better.
32:16Ah, you thought.
32:17That is actually, that's really cool.
32:19Gas fireplace.
32:20So this is all about nighttime in the desert.
32:23I just fell in love with these.
32:24Oh, good.
32:25I found those at the Rose Bowl, too.
32:27Where did most of the budget go?
32:29To the kitchen and the bathroom.
32:30Okay.
32:31When you're talking about value, it's about open, beautiful space, comfortable life, easy living.
32:37This outdoor space, it's a little bit Mexico, a little bit Greece, but a little bit France.
32:42We did this awesome pea gravel, really kept it neutral and simple.
32:46Low maintenance.
32:46And then if you look from here, the view of this great room is very low.
32:50Lovely.
32:51I like it.
32:51Yeah.
32:52Who I see living here is a young family that is just a little cooler than their neighbors.
32:58Specifically three of them.
33:03Hello there.
33:04Hi.
33:05Wow.
33:05What?
33:06Well, that's what I want to hear.
33:07I cannot believe these are all the same houses that you started, and then you each turned
33:15them into masterpieces.
33:16This is incredible.
33:17It's definitely an impression when you walk in.
33:20Holy smokes.
33:21Talk about this wall behind us.
33:22I brought this mantle from Chicago, so it's an old antique piece.
33:28I'm from Chicago.
33:29This must have been a pretty hefty penny on the budget, right?
33:34No.
33:35Really?
33:35All of this was labor.
33:36The material is plywood.
33:38We have some trim in here.
33:40I mean, the value, probably well over to $10,000, $15,000, maybe more.
33:44Obviously, you're from the big city, Chicago.
33:47You brought that city vibe out to California.
33:50But that Chicago look is very specific to a certain type of buyer, and I don't know if
33:54that'll cater towards a Southern California buyer.
33:57It doesn't matter if it's an appraiser in Chicago or it's an appraiser out here in California.
34:01It's like, I know what's going to up the value of any property.
34:05These doors, that's where I kind of, I really spent a ton of my money.
34:08Yeah.
34:09That used to be a window.
34:11Now it's all about this indoor-outdoor space.
34:13The grid system on them in the black, to me, has that storefront feel.
34:17Good job.
34:18Or like almost very lofty, kind of Chicago a little bit.
34:21Oh my gosh.
34:22And then I wanted this to be indoor-outdoor all day long.
34:25This fireplace is something that I had built.
34:28And what I love about it is there's this big house behind you.
34:31I think the money you spent there just by blocking that view is worth it.
34:35How about the rope light?
34:37Oh my gosh.
34:37So these were Rose Bowl purchased also.
34:39They were $40, and they were pre-wired.
34:41So I was like, how do I make art out of them, but also turn that art into a functional light fixture?
34:47I'm hearing like water.
34:49Honestly, this is one of my favorite pieces.
34:50I got this from the Rose Bowl, but I knew I was putting it in this pier mirror.
34:54So this is an old Chicago piece.
34:56And then I did this faux living wall.
34:57So it's low maintenance.
34:59It brings so much beautiful green and lush kind of feel to it.
35:01It's got so much character.
35:03So now it's just all about what's kind of behind the corner.
35:07It's that mystery and that curiosity.
35:08Yes!
35:09Really, all it is for me is all about green.
35:17So what I chose to do was the synthetic turf and all these custom planters.
35:22I mean, those look great.
35:24They provide privacy.
35:25I'm impressed.
35:26Nice work.
35:27If I run the kitchen, I got to believe that there's just a big win behind it.
35:31Ready or not, here we come.
35:36Oh my goodness.
35:37Hello.
35:37Hello, guys.
35:39How are you?
35:40Hello.
35:41How are you?
35:42Oh, man.
35:43You're here to judge me, aren't you?
35:44Good to see you, but good to see this.
35:49I wanted buyers to walk in here and feel like, wow.
35:53Yes.
35:53So, you know, when you first come in, I mean, it's such a great grand room.
35:56My eyes immediately go to that light.
35:58This is upwards of $1,000 just for this light.
36:01Okay.
36:01Okay.
36:04This is an electric fireplace.
36:06Oh, okay.
36:06I had to install it in the middle of the house and I couldn't vent it.
36:09Gotcha.
36:09This is more of like an aesthetic, almost like an art installation at this point.
36:13The cool thing is you could easily build this out or add shelves and this could become storage.
36:18And I also added these two niches on either side of the fireplace when I built this whole thing out.
36:23Speaking of storage, are these lockers over here?
36:25These are lockers, yeah.
36:26I bought these at the Vintage Swap Meet.
36:29We went to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
36:31All I did was put these inside of a nice oak casing here.
36:35Smart.
36:35And it just makes it feel like you can come in and kind of live.
36:38Well, you know, we're from Florida and one of the biggest things in Florida is indoor, outdoor living.
36:43And I mean, wow.
36:44It's just like you have a wall of windows.
36:50This definitely adds value.
36:52Right?
36:53Please tell me they pocket all the way to the wall, Jasmine.
36:55I wish they did.
36:56But they go to here.
36:57And then we have this fixed panel that actually allows for our furniture to make sense.
37:01Okay.
37:01I'm kind of seeing this up here.
37:03I love how you tied in the ceiling from the outside to the inside.
37:07It makes it feel like one space.
37:09These lights, this crate, and this wood was all bought at the flea market.
37:15So it's all...
37:16Man, you scored big at the flea market.
37:18It's not a full outdoor kitchen, but it still gives you the bare essentials.
37:22And it looks really cool.
37:24Let's move out to the Oasis.
37:26Yeah, I know.
37:26This is like, wow.
37:30This is where I spent my money, you guys.
37:32I see.
37:32Ah, I was going to say, a pool is not inexpensive, but very much has the resort feel.
37:38It's like nice and clean.
37:39I saved up for this part of the competition, and I don't think anybody else is going to
37:51do anything close.
37:53Awesome job.
37:55Okay, bye guys.
37:56We have a lot to think about.
37:56I can tell, yeah.
37:58We'll see you.
38:01After a lot of thoughts, we narrowed it down to two houses.
38:05I think I've used my money really wisely, and I'm hoping that works to my benefit and
38:13not my detriment.
38:14Leanne took week one.
38:15Allison took week two.
38:16I feel like Nina is due for a win, and she's my biggest competition this week.
38:20So hopefully, this gamble is going to pay off.
38:31Ladies, I have seen some great rooms in my time, but you're great.
38:35Great rooms are not just great.
38:36They're amazing.
38:37Allison, so the wow factor was wow.
38:41It just felt so luxurious.
38:43The outdoor space, amazing.
38:46First of all, the privacy of the placement of the fireplace that you put there, you don't
38:50even realize that you have neighbors.
38:53You know, that Chicago look is very specific to a certain type of buyer, and since we're
38:57in Southern California, I don't know if that'll cater towards a Southern California
39:01buyer.
39:02It's a lot of me in there, because it's a lot of Chicago architecture, and I know that
39:06people out West really appreciate those types of artifacts.
39:11Mina, what we really loved about your space is that turf.
39:15I take care of my own grass, and this would be a dream come true, not having any maintenance.
39:18And the fact that you negotiated from $10 square foot to like $5.50, you cut it in half, was
39:24incredible.
39:24Also love how the space is laid out absolutely perfect for families from room to room.
39:28The pergola, the two fireplaces felt incredible for us.
39:33One thing we would have liked to have seen when we first walked into the space was more of
39:36a wow factor.
39:37And we felt like putting some sort of chandelier to anchor that living room space, that great
39:41room would have made it that much grander.
39:49Jasmine, oh my goodness.
39:50Extra storage was insane.
39:53The outdoor kitchen.
39:55I think that was probably my favorite, because if I can have my wine and not have to go back
39:59in for a refill, I'm all about that.
40:02The pool was really awesome, but there's also extra upkeep with that.
40:06So I kind of was a little bit torn on that, because I can kind of see it going either
40:10way there.
40:11The sliding door.
40:12I love when you first walk in that you just had that beautiful panoramic of the outdoor
40:16space.
40:16I just wish that it would open all the way, but overall very impressed.
40:20This week is everything.
40:22I really need this.
40:23I've put everything out on the line.
40:25I've earned this.
40:29Leanne, you definitely had the most unique space that we walked through today.
40:33We loved how wide open it was, and you know, it took a while for it to grow on me, but
40:38it finally did.
40:38One of the concerns that we had after walking the space was you ripped out some of the great
40:42stuff.
40:43You ripped it down to bare bones, and while some people may appreciate it, some people
40:47may not.
40:47It's a very specific buyer that you're going for.
40:50All the imperfections that would make somebody kind of give Doc a point off are what make
40:55me love a place.
40:56After a lot of thoughts, we narrowed it down to two houses.
41:09Mina's and Jasmine's.
41:13Did we fight to the death?
41:14Yes.
41:15The two of you really added the most features that are really big selling points for buyers.
41:19I was 100% surprised it was not in the top two for the great room.
41:23That was kind of bananas.
41:24But the winner is the one that did just a little bit more.
41:32And that designer is...
41:36Brian, I can't do this.
41:38You have to tell him.
41:40The winner is...
41:43Jasmine.
41:47That's the kitchen, girl.
41:50Congrats.
41:51It definitely sucks to lose.
41:53I'm super competitive.
41:55Going up against these designers really pushed me to take risks, but they didn't pay off.
41:59Okay, guys, you are officially in the home stretch.
42:02And what's left is obviously the finishing touches, the curb appeal, and the remaining
42:06spaces that you have left in the house.
42:08And just a reminder, you only have one more week to get the rest done because
42:11Drew's coming to appraise your houses.
42:14Jasmine won the great room and backyard just by a spidgen, I guess.
42:19And I am the biggest loser.
42:22I've won nothing.
42:23But what it comes down to is the appraised value.
42:26And I think I am still in the hunt, front of the pack on that guy.
42:31Good luck, girls.
42:32Great job.
42:32Thanks for having us.
42:33Good luck, guys.
42:34Bye.
42:34Bye, guys.
42:35Finally winning feels right.
42:37I'm going to go into week four confident.
42:39I'm going to make big decisions.
42:41And I'm going to bring home the win.
42:43I think it was a big surprise for me.
42:44I mean, I'm not saying she's not good.
42:45It's just, I'm here to win everything.
42:52Next time on Rock the Block.
42:54This is the moment we've all been waiting for.
42:56This week is all about curb appeal.
42:58The office.
42:58Extra bedrooms.
42:59Bathroom.
43:00Gone.
43:00Gone.
43:01Gone.
43:01I don't have the budget, so I'm going to do it myself.
43:04There's no door.
43:04You're kidding me.
43:06Oh, my God.
43:07You want to make it a secret room?
43:08I'm definitely going to steal that idea.
43:10Mother.
