AccuWeather's Tony Laubach had a busy day of storm chasing the previous day as he reports more storms ahead for the south-central U.S. with the risk of torrential rain and flooding as of April 29.
Transcript
00:00Day one of a three-day severe weather stretch kicked off yesterday along the Red River.
00:05AccuWeather meteorologist Tony Laubach tracked those storms and joins us from Altus, Oklahoma
00:09to show us what he saw and what his plans are for today.
00:14Good morning.
00:17Good morning, Ari.
00:19Yeah, it was a busy day yesterday for us down here across southwest Oklahoma and northwest Texas.
00:25Myself and AccuWeather senior producer Doug Hicks, who is joining me for this several-day stint,
00:31we're tracking storms that developed just to the southwest of us here in the Altus area.
00:36We'll show you these storms.
00:37I got off about early evening, we saw these storms start to develop, and if you were with us on air last night,
00:44we kind of gave you a walkthrough of this particular supercell, and what it was doing after it shortly formed,
00:50this became a splitting supercell, and we ended up tracking that right mover across the Red River
00:55to here in southwest Oklahoma, ultimately, basically just kind of working our way to the Altus area.
01:01Our initial storm actually died out, and we moved back to the west to here in Altus
01:05and intercepted multiple storms.
01:07It was kind of multiple rounds of storms that worked its way here into the Altus area last night.
01:12We saw a little bit of hail.
01:14Most of these storms actually producing mostly just torrential rains, and we saw some street flooding in town,
01:19and that was really kind of the brunt of what we saw here in the city.
01:22But the final storm of the evening actually prompted the National Weather Service to issue a tornado warning
01:28as the tail end of that complex did get some rotation there.
01:32No tornadoes out of that, fortunately, as that storm slid just to the south of Altus.
01:37We did see what looked to be maybe kind of a bullish-looking funnel, a little bit of rotation just south of town,
01:44but again, nothing touched down, so that was fortunate.
01:46It really Altus spared most of it, minus a little bit of street flooding in the city.
01:50We got later as that storm pushed off to the east.
01:53We saw some incredible lightning with that as well.
01:55That was pretty much the highlight of the night.
01:57We pretty much watched that storm for nearly an hour as it pushed away, bringing some awesome lightning.
02:02That storm complex eventually worked its way up toward the Oklahoma City metro area.
02:06It did bring a little bit of small hail to the Norman area as that complex pushed off to the east.
02:11Currently right now a little chilly this morning with a little bit of the wind.
02:15We do have some showers and storms just off to our west.
02:18Today's plan, kind of in a similar area.
02:20I think we are going to start a little bit further south than we did yesterday.
02:23We kind of set up in Vernon, Texas yesterday.
02:27I think we're going to go about a county or two to the south, get set up near the Cap Rock,
02:31because we're expecting more storm development on the dry line.
02:33But generally speaking, about the same areas today as we saw yesterday,
02:38and I think we're probably going to focus more of our attention in northwest Texas.
02:41So I don't know if we'll get into southwest Oklahoma, but certainly that storm threat will exist for you folks here in southwest Oklahoma.
02:48And then as we get into tomorrow, we kind of shift our focus a little bit further to the east.
02:52Dallas-Fort Worth, you're going to be kind of in the crosshairs tomorrow, unfortunately, I think, for large hail and damaging winds.
02:58Again, tornado threat not overly high.
03:00It certainly is there, as you mentioned, the word isolated tornadoes.
03:03I think that will be what we'll be watching for today.
03:05And that big hail threat, we always say everything's bigger in Texas, Ari and Bernie.
03:10I think that also goes for the hails.
03:12So that's going to be something we're going to be watching out for today as well.
