00:00Two neighbours living in the Adelaide Hills say that thieves have stolen more than 200,000 litres of water from their tanks at a cost of more than $5,000.
00:14Now the two neighbours say that they believe a truck was used to drain their water tanks while they slept in the early hours of Tuesday morning, both of them finding truck prints in their driveways as they woke.
00:28The tanks were located adjacent to the road which makes them accessible to the country fire service in the event of a bushfire emergency.
00:37One of the neighbours said that she even had two padlocks on her water tanks but which clearly proved to be no deterrent to the thieves.
00:46Now South Australian police says it's still obtaining information about the reported thefts and was unable to comment further.
00:53The Adelaide Hills Council says that reports of water theft in the region are surprising and unusual and the incident is a rare occurrence.
01:02This of course comes at a time where water tanks across the hills are running dry.
01:07Localised water shortages come after Adelaide experienced its driest year since 2006 in 2024 with only around 350 millimetres of rainfall recorded in the gauges, about 200 millimetres below the average.
01:23Data from the Bureau of Meteorology last month showed that most of the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula had gone more than 100 days without falls of over 10 millimetres.
01:34The state has seen some significant downfalls beginning the week leading up to Anzac Day but still reservoirs in the Mount Lofty region remain at just 37%, about 10% lower than this time last year.
01:49OK, thank you.
01:51Great.
