Rob Gregson discusses the Pittsburgh Steelers' signing of veteran receiver Robert Woods.
Transcript
00:00The Pittsburgh Steelers opted not to take a swing at the wide receiver position in the NFL Draft,
00:04leaving many to wonder why. On Monday, they answered that question with a veteran and Super Bowl champion.
00:13Hey everyone, Rob Gregson of A to Z Sports Pittsburgh, and today we're going to discuss
00:18the fallout of the Robert Woods signing by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Woods won a Super Bowl with
00:23the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, and ever since has served a big role on two different teams
00:29being the Tennessee Titans, and most recently with the Houston Texans. He's now 31 years old.
00:36He's gone through some injury history, but he is still the best option that the Steelers are going
00:42to have in the slot. And Pittsburgh, they like to do this kind of thing. I mean, you go back and look
00:47at Allen Robinson last year with Van Jefferson, and now with Robert Woods, they want a veteran
00:53contributor. They want somebody they know they can rely on to be in that wide receiver core at that
00:59slot position. Obviously, you have DK Metcalf and George Pickens outside. Those guys are fairly
01:04interchangeable at the X and Z position. But in the slot wide receiver role, you have this hodgepodge,
01:10this mix of a whole bunch of different guys. Roman Wilson, Calvin Austin III, and now Robert Woods.
01:17I expect Robert Woods to be the one that gets a lot of the targets and a lot of the work in that
01:24slot wide receiver role. Why? Because of Arthur Smith. We know that he needs his receivers to be
01:30able to block. And Robert Woods is just plain and simple a much bigger target, a much bigger person
01:37than both Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin III. Somebody's got to go in there, dig out the safeties,
01:43crack the linebackers, make plays so the running back can get to the second and third level of the
01:48defense. That's going to be Robert Woods' role. Add on the fact that he is a route running savant,
01:52that he can still get open over the middle of the field and exploit matchups. And it's a great signing
01:58for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They answer the one lingering question they had left in the weaponry
02:03of their offense, which is who is going to be that certified slot wide receiver number three.
02:09And now they have solved that with Robert Woods.
