00:00Hundreds of vehicles were left with flat tires after a truck spilled 750 kilograms of sharp metal debris along one of Australia's busiest highways on Friday morning.
00:13New South Wales State Police said the incident, which occurred on the M1 Pacific Motorway in New South Wales, caused major traffic disruption and damaged the tires of more than 300 vehicles.
00:26As a result of that, the highway was closed as soon as possible once we got the right resources there about 6.30 and the highway is now obviously closed on a significant area.
00:39We have managed with the support of the police to get some of those big heavy trucks through the area under escort, but the road southbound is still closed.
00:51And it is now going to take more than several hours to clean the rest of the motorway up to make sure it's safe.
01:00Authorities say the truck traveled over 30 kilometers before the spillage was detected.
01:05Well, I think the damage largely consisted of damage to rims and tires between one and up to all four tires.
01:14Clearly, when you've had one tire, it's easy to replace it with a spare.
01:17But when you go past that, it becomes a significantly more difficult proposition to get safety from where you are.
01:23And that required the use of numerous tow trucks and private contractors, the NRMA, and again transport for New South Wales to get that job done effectively.
01:33Police say the 46-year-old truck driver is cooperating with the investigation.
01:38Police say the 46-year-old truck driver is also a huge riskzagging member.
01:51Thanks.
01:52Police say the 46-year-old truck driver is a database for New South Wales.
01:57Their car is not a deal.
01:59This has been a big deal with a very large vehicle.
02:02The truck is a system.
