00:00A holiday at Brands Hatch after an incredibly close qualifying session.
00:04Alain Menuh heads the field in his Renault Laguna less than a tenth of a second faster than Joe Winklehock's BMW.
00:12But to emphasise just how competitive the British Touring Car Championship is,
00:16only eight-tenths of a second covers the first 14 cars on the grid.
00:21And that's eight different makes.
00:23Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.
00:26So it's a tense atmosphere in the pit lane as the teams and drivers get ready for the first of two 38-lap races
00:33around Brands Hatch's action-packed 1.2-mile Indy Circuit.
00:38And there to seize Renault team is Formula One boss Frank Williams, who knows it's not going to be easy.
00:43Well, last year the times were incredibly tight.
00:46Certainly you could say closer than usual in Formula One, i.e. it's very, very competitive.
00:50And close competition spurs a greater challenge to the guys, and they react with better cars.
00:56Well, Menuh's Renault seems to be a better car.
01:00There it is at the front.
01:01But can Alain stay there?
01:03He's got super starter Joe Winklehock alongside him.
01:07Rydell's Volvo and Beeler's four-wheel drive Audi just behind.
01:10Then Hoy's Renault and Burt's Volvo.
01:13Row four, Binkliffe's Audi and Thompson's Vauxhall.
01:16Radisic is Mondeo, Trelland's Vectra.
01:19Row six, Harvey's Peugeot, James Kay's Honda.
01:22Leslie's Honda is 13th with Revali as BMW.
01:25Then Watson and Brooks, Peugeot and Toyota.
01:29Perfect weather.
01:30Massive crowd where Winklehock second on the grid.
01:33He's creeping a bit.
01:34Watch it, Joe.
01:36And away they go.
01:37Bad start for Winklehock.
01:40Good start for Rydell and a sensational start for Beeler.
01:43Look at him.
01:44Straight past into the lead and panicked.
01:47Beeler leads.
01:48Menuh's second.
01:49Winklehock is third.
01:50Rydell is fourth.
01:51Up Haywood Hill.
01:52Into Druids.
01:55Winklehock alongside Menuh as they go down the descent to Ground Hill Bend.
02:00Where with Winklehock now and off goes Menuh's mirror.
02:03Along the Cooper straights, over 100 miles an hour, up to 30, the left-hander.
02:11This is it.
02:13Beeler, Menuh, Winklehock.
02:15Then the two Volvos.
02:16Will Hoyd going through.
02:18Bindcliffe attacks Thompson's Vauxhall.
02:20And behind him is Radisic into the top straight.
02:27The Audi leads.
02:29The Renault is second.
02:30And behind it is the white B of Winklehock is swarming all over it.
02:36Up Haywood again.
02:38There are the two Volvos.
02:39Will Hoyd is in sixth position.
02:42And there he is.
02:43Bindcliffe.
02:44And there's smoke pouring from the left side of the Audi.
02:49Look at it.
02:50As Radisic in the Ford Mondeo comes up behind John Bindcliffe, number 44.
02:55He's going to lose time.
02:56His tyre's been worn out.
02:58Can he keep the place?
02:59Radisic there.
03:01Turns into the left-hander at 30s.
03:04Now the right-hander.
03:05A clear ways that Radisic goes through.
03:07Takes the place.
03:08Look how close it is.
03:09Into the top straight.
03:10And the Audi mechanics have got the wheel guns ready already.
03:14Expecting Bindcliffe to come in.
03:19There's the leader.
03:20And a new lap record already.
03:23Alan Menuh, 93.3 miles an hour.
03:26And Radisic has caught Thompson, number six.
03:29Paul Radisic, the New Zealander.
03:31Now we're with Will Hoyd.
03:33He's attacking from fifth on the grid.
03:35That's Bert's Volvo ahead.
03:37And he's hit it.
03:38Bert holds it.
03:40Incredible, beautiful recovery as they've clung down towards Graham Hillbend.
03:45Seven cars, nose to tail.
03:47Battling for fifth.
03:48Hoyd's got through.
03:50Hoyd's up a place.
03:53Behind the Volvo.
03:57There's Will Hoyd.
03:58Behind him is Thompson.
03:59Behind him is Radisic.
04:01As Harvey goes through and we're with him.
04:03Tim Harvey and he's lost it.
04:05He spins the Peugeot.
04:07Tarsmoke everywhere.
04:09Tim Harvey has lost it altogether.
04:12Starts the engine.
04:13Is he going to rejoin?
04:14No, he's not.
04:18Tim Harvey drives into the pit lane.
04:21Up two Druids comes Beeler.
04:23Menu having a look but can't get by.
04:26Winklehock is right behind him.
04:27So it's still Audi, Renault, BMW down to Graham Hillbend.
04:32And behind them, Rickard Rydell in the Volvo has equaled the lap record to within 100th of a second.
04:40It's close.
04:48There they go.
04:49We're in car with Will Hoyd behind Kelvin Burt.
04:53That's the Volvo.
04:54Number eight and Hoyd goes through.
04:56Beautiful passing move.
04:58Hoyd up to fifth position.
05:00Down to sixth goes Burt.
05:01We're with him.
05:03There is Hoyd in the Renault.
05:05Down the Brabham Street.
05:06135 miles an hour.
05:09Up to Paddock.
05:10Number eight, Kelvin Burt.
05:13Out of Paddock.
05:15Climbing Hailwood Hill.
05:20Hoyd, Burt, Thompson.
05:22Look how close it is.
05:23I think Thompson's touched the Volvo.
05:28Down to 30s.
05:29Volvo, Vauxhall, Ford and behind them.
05:32Roberto Revalho in the BMW has caught Radisic.
05:37There is Radisic.
05:38Behind in the white BMW.
05:41In car with Radisic.
05:42He's catching Thompson.
05:43He's hit him.
05:44The Vauxhall was very loose indeed there.
05:49Radisic caught him.
05:50He's going through on the inside as they come down the Brabham Street.
05:53Radisic going up into seventh position ahead of Thompson or is he as they go into Paddock?
05:57There they go.
05:59And we're with Thompson.
06:01And there is Radisic edging ahead as he climbs up Hailwood Hill.
06:06The Ford is ahead.
06:09Radisic.
06:09Number seven is Thompson.
06:11Behind him is Revalho.
06:13We're back again with Radisic who says thank you as they go down to Graham Hill Bend.
06:17Seventh and eighth.
06:18Ford and Vauxhall.
06:20And Binkliff comes into the pits in his Audi.
06:25Well, they're changing that wheel.
06:27That was the one that was causing the smoke as John sits impassively there.
06:32And they're hammering out the wheel arch.
06:35And that is a Peugeot wheel.
06:37That's Tim Harvey's Peugeot wheel.
06:40What's happened?
06:41The wheel rim looks like it's been in a Caesar's chariot race.
06:45It's ripped apart by the wheel nut on the Audi.
06:50Back in the race up to Druids.
06:52There's nothing in it with the three leaders.
06:54Biela.
06:55Menuh.
06:56Winklehop.
06:57Right behind them is Ricard Rydell.
06:59And he is still very sore from a road car accident he had earlier in the week.
07:05There's the Volvo.
07:06And it's fight, fight, fight for fifth.
07:09And Radisic savages the Volvo in front of him.
07:13Radisic's Mondeo hits the Volvo.
07:15And we are in par with James Thompson in the Vauxhall chasing Paul Radisic.
07:22Out of Graham Hillbend into 30s.
07:25Round the right hand at Clearways.
07:27And Radisic is attacking Burke.
07:29And I think he's hit the Volvo.
07:31It moved across a bit there.
07:33But Radisic is going through up into sixth place.
07:35And look at Burke's bumper.
07:36Look at the right hand end of Burke's Volvo bumper.
07:40So, down the Brabham Street.
07:43Into Panic again.
07:44There is Radisic.
07:45And off goes Burke.
07:47And off goes Thompson.
07:48Together.
07:49Off go the Volvo and the Vauxhall.
07:52This is Burke's car.
07:54Is there anybody in there?
07:56It's on the ignition off.
07:57It's the ignition off, says the marshal.
08:00Vectra on the left.
08:01Volvo on the right.
08:02Here's a replay.
08:03In car with Thompson.
08:05Radisic on the right.
08:07Burke on the left.
08:08Thompson, the last of the late breakers.
08:10Straight into the Volvo.
08:12Off goes Burke.
08:13No chance.
08:14Into the tarwall goes Thompson.
08:17His fault.
08:19Certies.
08:20Menuh and Winklehock all over Bela's Audi.
08:23But they can't get by.
08:28Wonderful racing.
08:29Tremendously close.
08:32Audi.
08:32Renault.
08:33We are in the BMW.
08:35Down to Panic.
08:36And this is where Winklehock attacks Menuh every lap.
08:40He's doing it again.
08:41He fails again.
08:43Can't get through on the inside there.
08:45Can he get through a Druid?
08:47This is it.
08:50No, he can't.
08:51Doesn't even try.
08:52We're with Winklehock now.
08:55Down to Graham Hill then.
08:57Look how close the Audi, the Renault and the BMW are.
09:01There is absolutely nothing in it.
09:03You've got to look for a place, hopefully, to get through.
09:06But where is that?
09:07Now, this is Richard Kaye leading the privateers.
09:10Erwin McCauley passes him in the Nissan.
09:15He is not a privateer.
09:17And Harvey has rejoined.
09:20New wheel back in the race.
09:21Getting some development mileage.
09:24And Will Hoy in the yellow Renault has been caught by Radisic.
09:27It is passed by Radisic.
09:29And it is passed by John Cleland, who follows Radisic through.
09:33So, Radisic to fifth, Cleland to sixth, and Hoy down to seventh.
09:37In fact, he's in trouble.
09:39Into the pit lane.
09:42Will Hoy does not have the best of luck in his British Touring Car Championship racing.
09:50Touring in, coming up to his pits, and from the car language, it looks as though his race is over.
09:58Have a look at the wheel.
09:59Up comes the bonnet.
10:00And poor old Will sits dejectedly in the Renault again.
10:07There he is.
10:10But the leaders are far from dejected.
10:13They haven't got time.
10:15Frank Bieland, Ben Winklehop, going for it again as they come up to Paddock.
10:19Having another look at Alain Manu's Renault and failing again.
10:22And they're coming up to that for tail enders.
10:25Now, is this going to be another 15 points for Frank Bieland,
10:28who's already won the first two races of the series this year?
10:32Down to Graham Hill, Ben.
10:33They're closing up on Richard Kaye's box hall.
10:36There's Robertson's Mondea.
10:37That is Richard Kaye.
10:39Then privateer Lee Brooks, and then race leader, Frank Bieland, number 45.
10:45He goes through inside the Toyota to lap it.
10:49Ben U does the same thing.
10:52In car with Bieland now.
10:54Race leader.
10:56Richard Kaye's box hall cavalier ahead.
10:58The blue flag waves let him through.
11:00He does so, and the Audi laps the box hall.
11:05Now, can Alain Manu get past before they get up to Druids?
11:08If he can't, he'll be in trouble.
11:10There is Will Hoy.
11:11He has rejoined, and the ravening horde is behind him.
11:15Bieland.
11:16Manu has gone past.
11:17Winklehock has gone past.
11:19Mount of Druids.
11:20Hoyt.
11:20Hoyt touring in again.
11:23And we're in car with Winklehock.
11:24Third place.
11:26Ahead of him, Manu's Renault.
11:28Ahead of him, Biela's Audi.
11:30Round the left-hander at 30s.
11:33There is Winklehock.
11:34Look how low in the car he is.
11:36Almost halfway along the car to get his weight back.
11:40We're inside the car with him.
11:41He passes Robertson and laps him, and he's attacking Alain Manu.
11:45He's going for it again as they come up to Paddock at 135 miles an hour.
11:50And again, Manu shuts the door.
11:52Winklehock backs off.
11:53He's no pull.
11:55Climbs Hailwood again.
11:56Owen McCauley is going to be lapped in the Nissan.
11:59Pass goes Biela.
12:00McCauley moves across.
12:02Lets them through.
12:03Well done.
12:04Menu goes past.
12:05Now we're with Winklehock.
12:06We go past.
12:09Graham Hillbend.
12:11Cooper straight.
12:12Up to 30s.
12:14Biela.
12:15Menu.
12:16Winklehock.
12:17Audi.
12:18Renault.
12:18BMW.
12:19Clearways.
12:20And they're just staying on the track as Rickard Rydell, fourth place, laps Robertson's Ford Mondeo.
12:29Richard Kaye is being caught by Radisic.
12:32Number six.
12:34All Radisic, the New Zealander in the Ford Mondeo.
12:38Revalia is behind him.
12:40Cleland is behind Revalia in the BMW.
12:43Patrick Watts is behind Cleland.
12:46Radisic goes through and laps Kaye.
12:48Tremendous battle for fifth place, which includes 1995 champion John Cleland.
12:55And there he is, number one in the Vauxhall Vectra.
12:58Up to Druids.
13:00And number 44.
13:01Bidcliffe is back in the race.
13:02He's passing Leslie, who's tenth.
13:05Oh, just passing.
13:07Beautiful.
13:08But Bidcliffe is two laps behind after his long pitch-top.
13:12Car smoke still pouring from the front near side wheel arch.
13:16Now, there is Biela.
13:22There is Menuh.
13:24There is Winklehock.
13:27Tremendous concentration called for, and it's now or never for Joe Winklehock,
13:32because they're coming up to start the last lap.
13:35Is he going to have another go?
13:36And Alan Menuh, as they come at the Paddock Bend at 135 miles an hour,
13:41watch the Renault get closer or not.
13:44Let's see.
13:45Biela leads.
13:46Last lap now.
13:49And Winklehock failed.
13:52Menuh is still ahead of him, as they come up to pass Gary Ailes and Richard Kay.
13:56Biela has got its headlights blazing to let them know he's on his way.
14:00Out of Druids.
14:01Down to Graham Hill Bend for the last time.
14:03Into the Cooper Strait for the last time.
14:07Up to Surtees.
14:09Menuh might be able to squeeze past if Biela gets into trouble with the traffic,
14:13but I doubt it.
14:15The four-wheel grunt of the Audi out of the corner is terrific,
14:20and we're with Frank Biela now.
14:23The blue flag waves, but Biela doesn't need to worry.
14:26He crosses the line to win the third race in succession in the Audi A4 Quattro,
14:33with Alan Menuh second in the Renault.
14:35Joachim Winklehock is third in the BMW,
14:39and it's a very, very happy Biela,
14:42as across the line the battle for fourth is just taken by Radisic from Ravalia and Cleland.
14:47Three wins from his first three British Championship races for Germany's Frank Biela.
14:52Less than a second covered his Audi, Menuh's Renault, and Winklehock's BMW,
14:56but it certainly looks as though Audi have got the rest by the throat.
15:00But with a strong showing from Renault and BMW,
15:04race two is a long way from a foregone conclusion.
15:07It was quite hard, of course.
15:09It always looks easy from outside, but I really had to fight for the win.
15:13And I think the main thing was a start.
15:15I had a very good start,
15:16and I could lead the field into the first corner.
15:20And I think on this circuit, especially on this circuit,
15:23that was the most important thing.
15:25Like Biela says, the start is the place to shine,
15:28for remember how close to him Menuh and Winklehock were all the time in race one.
15:34And this time, the comeback kid, Joe Winklehock,
15:36is in pole position in his vastly improved BMW.
15:40So Biela will need another four-wheel drive rocket start from row three,
15:44but there's still an Audi A4 in row one,
15:47a superb effort by newcomer John Binkliff.
15:50Two Renaults on row two, Hoy and Menuh.
15:53Row three, Biela, with Rydell's Volvo.
15:56Then it's Cleland's Vectra and Burt's Volvo.
15:59Row five, Revalia BMW, Radisic Ford.
16:03Lesley's Honda Accord next with Thomson's Vauxhall.
16:06The two Peugeots, Watson Harvey, another Honda, another Ford,
16:11and another 38 laps.
16:13Watch Bidcliffe, second on the grid in the Audi.
16:16Green light.
16:18And Hoy has stalled the Renault.
16:21Ah, well, Hoy stops.
16:23And into Paddock, it's Winklehock and Bidcliffe together.
16:27Menuh third.
16:28Biela up to fourth place.
16:29We're with Biela now.
16:31Menuh and Bidcliffe ahead.
16:32And Winklehock leads.
16:35Into Druids.
16:36And Bidcliffe has hit Winklehock.
16:39Winklehock pushed wide.
16:41Bidcliffe leads.
16:42What's Menuh going through, is he?
16:43No.
16:44Winklehock holds the place.
16:45Audi, BMW, Renault, Audi, up to 30s.
16:51So, Bidcliffe leads his fourth British Touring Car Championship race.
16:56In car with Biela.
16:57He's got a battle on his hands.
16:59And he nudges Menuh's Renault into the Bramham straight.
17:04Here they come.
17:06And on the outside, Ricard Rydell is really flying in the Volvo.
17:10Past Biela.
17:12And Birt is following in through in the other Volvo.
17:14Birt up into fifth position.
17:16Biela is down to sixth.
17:17Now, we're with Frank Biela now.
17:20The two Volvos in front as he climbs up Haylewood Hill into Druids.
17:24John Clelland is going for it behind them.
17:26John Clelland, number one, trying to drive around the outside of Biela.
17:30He won't do that.
17:31And he doesn't.
17:32He drops back.
17:34Biela again.
17:35Birt ahead.
17:36Volvo, Volvo, Audi, Vauxhall.
17:43You can see how closely matched they are.
17:45Even Biela looks stuck, but is he?
17:47He tries to go inside Birt, but Birt slams the door in his face.
17:52Down the Bramham straight.
17:53Here come the leaders.
17:54Bidcliffe, Winklehock, Menuh.
17:57They're breaking away from Ricard Rydell a bit.
18:00Into Paddock, 85 miles an hour.
18:02There's Menuh.
18:03Climbing Haylewood Hill.
18:07Bidcliffe leads in the Audi.
18:08Turns into Druids.
18:10Winklehock attacks.
18:11And there's a bit of tit for tat.
18:13He hits the Audi, which slides aside.
18:17Winklehock goes through.
18:18Menuh follows him.
18:19Bidcliffe down to third position.
18:21Now, last year, BMW were well off the face.
18:25But now the fabled Schlitzer team and smoking Joe Winklehock are back on top.
18:31Out of 30s into clearways.
18:34Now, can they stay there?
18:36Replay of the start.
18:38We're with Winklehock's whole position.
18:41Look at Bidcliffe on the left.
18:42What a getaway.
18:45Round Paddock.
18:45Winklehock is leading.
18:51He's held the start.
18:52He turns into the right-hander at Druids.
18:55Bidcliffe hits him.
18:57Winklehock corrects.
18:58But John Bidcliffe goes through into the lead in the Audi.
19:02There he is.
19:03This is Druids.
19:04It's fierce at the front.
19:08That's Kelvin Burt.
19:09And we're back again with Frank Bieler.
19:15Kelvin Burt only in his second season of touring car racing after having been British Formula 3 champion.
19:23That's the Volvo.
19:27Out of clearways with Frank Bieler trying to take Kelvin Burt's Volvo.
19:31They're doing 100 miles an hour here, accelerating up to 135 miles an hour.
19:37Burt ran a bit wide there, but he's still stayed ahead as they go down the Brabham Street into Paddock, the right-hander.
19:46Climbing Hailwood Hill.
19:49And they are all absolutely on the ragged edge of adhesion as they turn into the right-hander at Druids.
19:56Oh, indeed they are.
19:57That's Kelvin Burt going off in the Volvo.
19:59It is not Kelvin's day.
20:01Now, was he pushed or did he fall inside the car?
20:05He's obviously all right.
20:06Out come the marshals.
20:09Oh, there's Kelvin just getting out of the car.
20:11Now, what's happened?
20:14Climbing up, down through the gears.
20:16Oh, and he locks up.
20:17You can hear the tyres squealing.
20:19Over the gravel, straight on to the depot.
20:23Out of the race.
20:24And Revalia in the white BMW is pushing James Thompson's Vectra.
20:29Indeed, he's going through, up into seventh place, almost swapping paint as he does so.
20:33That was close.
20:35We're with Thompson now.
20:36Revalia ahead.
20:38Now, the ex-world champion, Roberto Revalia, hasn't gone as well as we expected.
20:42But he is in the spare car after a practice crash in his BMW.
20:48Ground paddock.
20:50The end of the lap.
20:51Wilhoy is storming through the field.
20:54Wilhoy in the yellow Renault, number four.
20:56Passes Harvey.
20:59Catching David Leslie ahead now in the Honda Accord.
21:02Up into Druids.
21:04Brakes late.
21:05Indeed, he does.
21:06Hits the Honda.
21:07But Leslie manages to hold it.
21:09And Joe Winklehock has broken the lap record.
21:12That's the third time today.
21:14First of all, Menuh.
21:15Then Rydell.
21:16Now Winklehock.
21:1793.6 miles an hour.
21:19And Richard Rydell is attacking Bindcliffe's Audi for third position.
21:24Rydell on the left.
21:26Bindcliffe on the right.
21:27Rydell has got the right line.
21:29And he's going ahead at Paddock.
21:30Down to fourth position goes Bindcliffe.
21:32Now, this is interesting because Bindcliffe is in fifth position.
21:38He's ahead of Bindcliffe in the points.
21:41And he'll want to move ahead of his teammates.
21:43But is Bindcliffe going to let him?
21:45Well, we're with Bindcliffe now.
21:47That's Bindcliffe ahead.
21:48And ahead of him is Rydell as they come down to Graham Hill Bend.
21:52And behind them, this is the battle for ninth.
21:55Patrick Watts in the Peugeot.
21:56Paul Radisic, number six in the Ford Mondeo.
22:00And off goes David Leslie.
22:01Now, Will Hoy was near him when Leslie went off.
22:06Did he hit the Honda Accord?
22:08Well, anyway, David Leslie is again out of the race.
22:12And here's a replay.
22:13Now we can find out we're with Will Hoy.
22:15That is Leslie ahead as Hoy closes up going into Druids.
22:19And yes, yes, Will Hoy hits the Honda Accord.
22:23And it always seems to be poor David Leslie.
22:26But at Graham Hill Bend, it's the Peugeot 406 versus the Ford Mondeo.
22:30So, Watts versus Radisic for ninth position.
22:35Radisic really going for it.
22:37Serties.
22:38And he goes through on the inside.
22:41Superb.
22:41Paul Radisic moves up into ninth position.
22:44But the 1995 champion of Germany, Joe Winklehock, is in charge of the race in a rebuilt car after going off on Friday.
22:53And that is number one.
22:54John Cleland, sixth position.
22:56Revalia behind him in seventh place.
22:58Up Hayward Hill again.
23:00Binkley, fourth, Biela, fifth.
23:03Cleland and Revalia, seventh position.
23:06Down to Graham Hill Bend.
23:07Look how Roberto Revalia, the ex-world champion in the BMW, is pushing the reigning British champion, John Cleland, in the Vauxhall back row.
23:17Here they are.
23:17That's Cleland.
23:19That's Revalia.
23:23Teetering on the edge of adhesion, but we're with Will Hoy.
23:26Eleventh place.
23:27His next target, metaphorically speaking, is Patrick Watts in the red Peugeot.
23:33He's in tenth position.
23:35Will Hoy closing right up on him.
23:37Out of clearways, down the Brabham Street, building up to the fastest point of the course.
23:42And now Will Hoy, where with him is in a lovely position to pass.
23:46And Paddock goes straight past Patrick Watts, up into the top ten.
23:52Having started almost last after stalling.
23:56Druids.
23:57Hoy, tenth.
23:59Watts, eleventh.
24:00Oh dear, privateer Lee Brooks in the Toyota Corina, into the pits.
24:07It's the first year for last year's Renault Clio champion.
24:12And he's obviously in trouble and out.
24:14And here are the two team dynamics privateers.
24:17Rob Gravitt and Matthew Neal, with Steve Robertson's Ford Mondeo.
24:23And a paddock.
24:25Richard Kaye is leading the privateers.
24:27He's being lapped by the leaders.
24:29That's Kaye in the white and green Boxall Cavalier.
24:33Now the two silver Audis and Midcliffe is still ahead of Vila.
24:38As John Cleland runs through on the inside and takes Richard Kaye.
24:44Cleland sixth.
24:45Revalia seventh.
24:46There they are.
24:47Cleland, number one.
24:48The champion.
24:49Revalia.
24:50Ex-world champion.
24:51That's him, 21 in the BMW.
24:57Climbing out of 30s.
24:58Revalia again for sixth position.
25:00He's getting ready to have a go at John Cleland.
25:03He's right up behind the Boxall Vector's boot lid.
25:05He's going to draft by as they go down the Brabham Strait.
25:09Or is he?
25:10He'll have a job to get past John Cleland.
25:12He's a very wily campaigner.
25:14And he's been at it a long time.
25:16And he turns into panic.
25:17And he does not go through.
25:19So John Cleland holds the place.
25:21So Audi, Audi, Vauxhall, Cleland, BMW, Revalia.
25:29And Vila, where with him, needs those two points from Binkliff.
25:33Are there going to be any team orders?
25:37Binkliff ahead in the Audi.
25:39Into 30s.
25:42Runs wide and clear ways.
25:44Vila goes through and up into fourth position.
25:47He's got those extra two points now.
25:49Down the Brabham Strait.
25:51Binkliff down into fifth position.
25:53Right behind him, John Cleland.
25:55Right behind him, Roberto Revalia.
25:58Panic again.
26:01Fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh.
26:03That's how close it is.
26:07Fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh Revalia.
26:12Exiting Druids, dropping down the Graham Hill Bend.
26:15Into the Cooper Strait.
26:17Revalia thrusting and pushing.
26:19Looking for an opportunity to get past the Vectra all the time.
26:23The Vectra behind Binkliff.
26:25And John Cleland's looking for an opportunity to get past the Audi all the time.
26:30Who's going to succeed?
26:31And we're getting closer and closer to the end of the race.
26:34Points count in the championship.
26:36Down the Brabham Strait then.
26:39Audi.
26:40Vauxhall.
26:41That's Revalia.
26:42Now he's going for it.
26:44He's going to cut across and try and get through on the inside.
26:47But Cleland locks up.
26:48Tires smoke.
26:50Revalia goes through.
26:51Into the gravel trap goes John Cleland.
26:54End of the race.
26:55The gravel trap really works.
26:58No points for the British champion.
27:01Now what happened?
27:02Replay.
27:03Cleland ahead.
27:04Locks up.
27:05Loses his line.
27:07Revalia just darks through on the inside.
27:09Moves up a place.
27:11Cleland can't stop it.
27:13Into the gravel trap.
27:14But of course once you've done that you are gone.
27:20And there is the proof.
27:26And here is the proof that Joe Winklehock is the man in this race.
27:31Magnificently out on his own.
27:34Into the last lap.
27:35He started from pole position.
27:38And once he got past John Midcliffe on the third lap he dominated the race.
27:4335 years old he comes from Weiblingen in Germany.
27:47The British champion in 1993.
27:49A poor year in 1994.
27:52The German champion last year.
27:54And this is going to be a rich reward for the Schnitzer team's all night work on his BMW.
28:01Which has gone magnificently.
28:03Out of clearways for the last time.
28:06Into the gravel trap for the last time.
28:08And he is ecstatic.
28:13Well done Joe Winklehock.
28:17Well done BMW and very well done team Schnitzer.
28:22Team manager Charlie Lamb is understandably ecstatic.
28:27So the Audis can be beaten.
28:29And Joe Winklehock showed how with a masterly drive to beat Alan Menuh's Renault by four seconds.
28:35And break the lap record.
28:37An excellent drive to third by Volvo's Ricard Rydell.
28:40Fourth and fifth of the Audis with Revalia's BMW sixth.
28:44Smoking Joe didn't put a wheel wrong.
28:46I had a very good start.
28:48And this is really important.
28:49Very important here in Brindsech.
28:50Because there is absolutely no chance, no point to pass another car.
28:55And so I can, I can, I drove my line, my system and this was quite well.
29:01So I'm happy.
29:03And well he may be.
29:05Joe Winklehock is a charming man and a brilliant driver who's given BMW a massive lift after a year in the doldrums.
29:13But as he reveled in the massive crowd's delight, all was far from well with Audi as a protest was made that Frank Beeler's A4 Quattro front suspension was illegal.
29:24The protestor was upheld, an appeal was rejected and Beeler was excluded from the second race results.
29:31So with a further appeal in the pipeline, the championship is contentiously and provisionally led by Alan Menuh.
29:37Six points ahead of Rydell and Winklehock with Hoy fourth and unprotested Bidcliffe fifth and the unfortunate Beeler down to seventh.
29:45But it could all change.
29:48A happy Richard Kaye leads the lucrative privateers championship for the total cup and with a 19 point lead he's in a strong position.
29:56An excellent meeting with two great races but a messy ending.
30:00Let's hope it's all resolved by the next two rounds of Fraxton on May the 6th.
