00:30One, two, three, four. Good to go? Yes. Canaries is next up. First proper tarmac rally of the season, but it's brand new. It's in an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Yeah, that's more or less all I know. You have been there before.
00:47Smooth tarmac. Armco one side, rock face to the other.
00:54Probably going to be the closest we get to circuit racing on this year's calendar, that's sure.
00:59Smooth roads. It's not a lot of bumps and cuts, so you can go really low with the car.
01:05You can have a bit of more of a stiff car, a bit more racing type car.
01:10It's normally as close as possible to the racing we can get with the rally cars, but...
01:16You want a maximum of grip.
01:18It's going to be interesting, I think, for everyone to see how the tyres behave.
01:23Yeah, I think it's a massive challenge for Hancock as a new manufacturer to come in, of course.
01:30I've done quite a bit of circuit racing in the last 12 months or so. Is that something that can help?
01:35I hope that I've learned something new there, but yeah, if it works well, it's pretty nice.
01:45Before the rally, the rivalry took to the water.
01:50Drivers and co-drivers crewing sailing boats.
01:54No engines, just teamwork.
01:58How was the communication on board?
02:00Yeah, everyone was speaking Spanish, so we were just guessing.
02:03Yeah, I don't even understand what we were doing, but I think we're doing everything that we were told,
02:08but it's really quite clever how it works.
02:11We just had to in, out, in, out, in, out, trying to ride the wind, as they say, so that was cool.
02:17I was quite intense, to be honest, quite physical.
02:19Not sure we can feel steering wheel tomorrow, but all together, definitely, yeah, very exciting experience.
02:26The start of a new event for the WRC.
02:35A rally around the Canaries, the rugged, volcanic holiday island.
02:41A great opening for 2025 for Elvin Evers.
02:45Two wins from three events.
02:48The ice and snow of Sweden, dust and gravel of the safari, both conquered.
02:53It's the huge variation in conditions that makes the WRC so tough.
03:00Here, it's all about mastering the smooth stuff.
03:03It would have to be a quick learning curve, even for the championship leader, Elvin Evers.
03:14Class act of the season so far, but every day a school day.
03:22Time to get everything right.
03:24If you want top marks, that is.
03:25Happy? Looking forward to it?
03:31As happy as it can be at the moment.
03:34Before it all gets nervous and tense.
03:36Exactly. Yeah, no, I think everything is fine.
03:40At least for the first, the sun is shining.
03:42The second one, we will see.
03:43We might come here for a beach holiday.
03:54Elvin Evers was here once again to stamp his authority on this WRC season.
03:58And quick.
03:59Straight out the box.
04:04No need to stick to the speed limits today.
04:06First real test of the hard compound Hankook tyres, not long before Thierry Nerville discovered
04:16the smooth, wide asphalt had gone.
04:20And was replaced by dust-covered, older tarmac.
04:25Further up the mountain, fog for Thierry, as the stage passed through the clouds, filling
04:31the valleys.
04:31Nerville was a big loser first thing, dropping 19 seconds.
04:37Was there an issue?
04:41A stiff car, lowest ride hike possible, and the grip was there.
04:45Stage one, the longest of the rally, and Huyton's speed faded the longer that this stage went
04:51on.
04:51Not a good showing for Hyundai so far.
04:54C'est beau-jei was back for the Canary's debut on the WRC.
05:02We hadn't seen him since he won the Monte Carlo.
05:12The Hyundai's hadn't enjoyed themselves.
05:15Nerville and Tannic appeared to have issues.
05:17Adrian Formeau had had a clean stage.
05:20He was the fastest of the three.
05:24After his stunning display on Shakedown, Kala Ravimpera was going to be a big danger
05:37to everyone.
05:38It was soon to pass.
05:39Kala was going to be very quick.
05:42The first, fastest time of the weekend belonged to him.
05:45So the first leaderboard reveals a Toyota, one, two, three.
06:00Ravimpera tops the times, but the two Hyundai world champions are struggling.
06:04Good morning, Thierry.
06:11You probably don't need me to tell you.
06:12That's 13 seconds dropped in there.
06:14What was wrong with the feeling in the car?
06:19It's a good start.
06:22Can you tell us what's going on?
06:23Is it just set up related?
06:24No question.
06:26Good morning, guys.
06:26Times looked okay through the first half of it.
06:29It seemed to tail off a bit as you came up the hill.
06:31What's going on?
06:32Anything?
06:34Yeah, terribly difficult.
06:38Yeah, that's how it is.
06:40Wow.
06:41Kale, that's very impressive.
06:43Six and a half seconds quicker than Elvin.
06:45You seem to like these hard compound hand cooks, yeah?
06:49Yeah, I'm a bit surprised with the time, to be honest.
06:52He did feel so good.
06:54We definitely were not in all-tire pressure.
06:58We need to hold this pedal on the next ones
07:00to prepare the tire, but, yeah,
07:03I felt I didn't appear in the front,
07:05so for sure we're going to improve,
07:06but that's, of course, for Ziggler.
07:10Rallying up and down mountains
07:12means going in and out of the clouds.
07:15Spectacular stuff, but tricky
07:16when you can't see where you're going.
07:18It's round four of the World Rally Championship,
07:40the opening day on Gran Canaria,
07:42and fog has moved into the mountains.
07:46I don't know why we are so slow compared to the Toyota,
07:49but we need to work on it.
07:51You're slow compared to the Toyota,
07:52but the fastest Hyundai,
07:54does that give you just a little bit of encouragement?
07:55Yes, but at some point we need to fight against Toyota,
07:59so for me we need to find a way to get faster.
08:04No one's talking to each other here.
08:05Everyone's very independent, yeah?
08:08I think everybody is quite stressed with the next one coming.
08:11Why is that what's happening?
08:12The fog stays in the stage,
08:15and then it puts a lot of humidity and dampness in the stage,
08:19and we are all on hard tyres.
08:21Now we just had a little chat about Barrier,
08:23and that sometimes you can use him to come back on road.
08:26It happened once in my career,
08:27but very low speed on snow in Monte Carlo,
08:30and otherwise in here it will put you maybe back on the road,
08:34but not in a good shape.
08:36A complete change in conditions for stage two.
08:46Low cloud then,
08:47and the road surface because of that dampened.
08:54Elvin Evans adapting to these new conditions,
08:56but for how long?
08:58Stay brave, stay committed.
09:00Thierry Nürburne had made some changes to the setup of his I-20,
09:08and they were working.
09:10But the clouds cut the visibility,
09:12and they stole a driver's confidence.
09:17Plain to see, not very plain to fix.
09:24Something is wrong, for sure.
09:27Nobody knows to tell me what,
09:28and I don't know either, so I do what I can.
09:32How hard is the car to drive then?
09:34I don't know.
09:35I mean, it's visible, no?
09:38Oytalic's confidence wasn't brilliant to start with.
09:42His I-20 wasn't at its best,
09:43and already he was looking for ways to find more speed,
09:46better balance, more grip.
09:54Another unhappy Hyundai driver.
09:58The car has zero balance, so, yeah.
10:02Yeah, we can only kill the tires,
10:04but nothing else we can do.
10:05Do you make changes from yesterday to today?
10:08I had it already like this,
10:10like this, and unfortunately, yeah,
10:12we couldn't figure it out before the rally.
10:14Stage two was better for Seb Auger,
10:25whose tires had overheated on that opening test.
10:27But here, they were just right
10:31to give him the fastest time so far.
10:39How much 3.1, huh?
10:42Happy with that?
10:43Yeah, I mean, the stage was shorter,
10:45so no issue with the tires in this one.
10:48Also, some little humidity,
10:50a bit colder temperature,
10:51so, it was easier to manage them in that.
10:59The scenery was spectacular,
11:00and so were the times from Kalorov and Perra.
11:02There was rhythm,
11:03there was commitment in this driving,
11:05and it all looked so effortless,
11:08as he swept from corner to corner.
11:10Movement on the leaderboard,
11:20but it's still a Toyota 1-2-3.
11:23Seb Auger is up into second place,
11:25past Elvin Evans.
11:32A strong morning was coming to an end
11:35for the championship leader, Elvin Evans.
11:37He now knew this little bit of the island
11:39and an awful lot better.
11:41The day had started with lots of questions.
11:43Setup, tires, about speed,
11:47about the amount of grip.
11:48But the morning had ended with lots of answers,
11:50some he'd hoped he could have got
11:52during the compromised recce.
11:55For the recce, these roads were open to the public,
11:58so the WRC drivers had to keep
12:00to the correct side of the road.
12:02At stage speeds,
12:03the lines were completely different.
12:09Thierry Nerville still hadn't got an answer
12:11for his continuing timings.
12:14It had dropped him to eighth place.
12:17Already.
12:18And another 6.6 seconds were gone here.
12:22Frustrating.
12:22Oytanek hadn't fared much better than his teammate,
12:31so service couldn't come quick enough.
12:35Why wasn't his I-20 living up to its reputation?
12:38The thinking caps would have to go on.
12:40Could you back against this man when on tarmac?
12:50It was hard not to.
12:51Seb Auger had been away from the championship for months,
12:54but on his return,
12:56was already challenging for the lead.
12:58More to come from you now you've got up to speed
13:12after the afternoon loop?
13:14We have to try a little more, yes.
13:16Thanks.
13:16So while Tanak and Nerville scratched their heads,
13:20Adrian Formeau took up this challenge
13:22against the formidable stuff made by Toyota.
13:25Formeau was faster than his teammates
13:27in almost every corner.
13:29But why was that?
13:37Again, you're the fastest here in the eye.
13:39Did you enjoy that run at least?
13:41That's a really incredible stage, to be fair.
13:45I had a really good stage.
13:46The balance was good all along the stage.
13:47It's just difficult.
13:49We're tired.
13:50And to be fair, I feel I had a good stage,
13:52so I'm happy with what I did.
13:54I couldn't get the tyre and the balance to work,
13:55so it was really difficult.
13:56The end part of the stage was slightly better.
13:58Kelly, it's not all bad.
13:59You've got a 17-second lead.
14:01I couldn't get the tyre and the balance to work,
14:03so it was really difficult.
14:04The end part of the stage was slightly better.
14:05Kelly, it's not all bad.
14:06You've got a 17-second lead.
14:07Yeah, it's not all bad, but always can be better.
14:13Four of the top five cars on the leaderboard are Toyotas.
14:18Out front, Kelly, quickest of the top three.
14:19Further down, Vitalik has dropped to seventh.
14:20I couldn't get the tyre and the balance to work,
14:21so I couldn't get the tyre and the balance to work,
14:22so it was really difficult.
14:23The end part of the stage was slightly better.
14:25Kelly, it's not all bad.
14:26You've got a 17-second lead.
14:27Yeah, it's not all bad, but always can be better.
14:32Four of the top five cars on the leaderboard are Toyotas.
14:37Out front, Kelly, quickest of the top three.
14:41Further down, Vitalik has dropped to seventh.
14:48It's been an interesting morning for the rest of the WRC field.
14:53OK, so what are you going to do to get yourself going, then?
14:55Do we need to do a bit of dancing or something?
14:57No, I'm not so good at dancing, Beth.
15:05Have you found the sweet spot, yeah?
15:06Yeah.
15:07I'm trying my best on this leap.
15:09It's just not lucky.
15:16Tell us what you're battling with in there.
15:18Yeah, we're struggling a lot with understeer.
15:21Honestly, it's quite crazy.
15:27I don't know.
15:28It's not really good, but not so bad.
15:36Midday service.
15:37The Hyundai team has got to find some answers.
15:40Their cars lack pace.
15:42And that has to change.
15:44Eighth place overall.
15:4645 down.
15:48How much?
15:4945 down.
15:50It's not good, is it?
15:51I don't know where to start, so the list is too long.
15:54We are working the front tires far too hard.
15:57And for me, there is no balance in the car at the moment that we could carry any speed.
16:03So, you know, as it's so racing style, you also need to have racing cars.
16:07Well, I'm not sure whether to call you Racey Rovenpera or Quick Calais, because that's been a pretty impressive morning.
16:13Yeah, it was definitely a good morning for us.
16:17It felt just pretty normal in the car.
16:20Yeah, he's definitely the man of the moment.
16:22He was on his home league this morning.
16:26No answer to match his speed at the moment.
16:29So, are we on Racey Rovenpera or Quick Calais?
16:31Which one are we on?
16:32You can choose.
16:33OK.
16:34The sun was out.
16:36There was definitely no stress over what new tires might do now, so the championship leader, Elvin Evans, could enjoy his afternoon.
16:49Everything was more familiar on Friday's repeat loop.
16:57Normally, the first priority was to beat your teammate.
17:03But in this case, the first thing for the Hyundai drivers to do is to get these tires working.
17:09Get them performing.
17:10Get them gripping this smooth, shiny black road.
17:21In general, the story is the same, so that's the way it is.
17:24How is the car behaving?
17:25Yeah, same.
17:29Time for Cervogier to try and match the Rovenpera pace.
17:33Yeah.
17:37Seb had more to give, and he knew it.
17:39But at the moment, learning these roads, and how these new tires worked, those were his priorities.
17:45He did what he could.
17:47They were good.
17:50And FOMO started the afternoon in fourth place, surrounded by Toyotas.
17:56That was the best Hyundai could do at the moment.
17:58The podium places were way away, and Sammy Pajari, in another Toyota, was putting pressure on him from behind.
18:06FOMO dropped time.
18:08So was the purple patch over, or was this going to be one of those Rovenpera drives?
18:18You know the ones.
18:19It had been some morning, and the Finn was on the point of making it a great afternoon.
18:29Another stage win.
18:30Sammy Pajari was battling FOMO for that fourth place.
18:38And there was very little in it.
18:41And it hadn't sparkled on this stage much.
18:43This was looking good.
18:45What's better than a Toyota 1-2-3?
18:49Yes, a Toyota 1-2-3-4.
18:54And that's what Sammy had created.
18:57Seat-of-the-pants stuff.
18:59What is it that was giving you that good feeling?
19:02You know, your ass needed to feel it.
19:09So that was my ass telling it.
19:11Josh McAleen took to the afternoon with Gustav.
19:16So much to learn, and so little time in which to do it.
19:22He got on the throttle as soon as he could, but he was suffering with understeer.
19:32Kalorov and Perra lead to Toyota 1-2-3-4.
19:37Sammy Pajari completing the awesome foursome.
19:42What's wrong? What's going on?
19:48We are just slow.
19:51What could be better than seeing your rivals struggle like this?
19:56Just wait and see.
20:11The first day of our very first visit to the Canaries is coming to an end.
20:18And it has been a fantastic Friday for Toyota.
20:21Here came the fog again.
20:32Falling on the stage like a memory.
20:35Rolling off the mountains.
20:36Elman Evans had to be really careful here.
20:40On tarmac like this, as we all know, things when they go wrong, go wrong very quickly.
20:47Tense stuff.
20:48I'm not happy with my run, but okay.
21:00Why are you not happy?
21:01It's not good enough.
21:02So precise, inch perfect, in every corner, as ever.
21:08And so well placed in his Toyota leaderboard.
21:14Seb Auger above the low cloud in places.
21:18Rallying him.
21:25Admin Formeau, Shundai's best hope so far.
21:29From the opening day in the Canaries, Shundai without a win so far this year.
21:34This, this was a lonely pursuit of this Japanese team.
21:39But he was another 7.8 seconds off the pace in here.
21:50Nothing to say.
21:52What's wrong? What's going on?
21:54We are just slow.
21:57Anything you can do before the next one?
21:59We are running out of ideas, actually.
22:04So, I'm enjoying driving.
22:08The stages are beautiful.
22:10The island is beautiful.
22:12But just frustrated with the time.
22:15Relentless.
22:17This was relentless.
22:19This was the kind of driving the team managers and fans love.
22:26Stage after stage after stage.
22:29Untouchable.
22:31Although here, Kalorovimpera was pushed a little bit harder by his teammates.
22:36Well, sort of.
22:38Another stage win to the fin.
22:42When's the last time you did a clean sweep of stage wins in a whole day?
22:46I don't remember.
22:48Could be on.
22:50No one in this sport has got their head in the clouds.
22:53For tacker, there's always something to keep your feet on the ground.
22:58But here's the question.
23:00What's better than a Toyota 1, 2, 3, 4?
23:03Well, the leaderboard will tell us.
23:06Toyota had done it.
23:10Five cars.
23:12Five top places.
23:14A Toyota 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
23:17Their various drivers separated by just under a minute.
23:21Formo down in sixth.
23:23The best of the Hyundai's.
23:25Elman Evans wasn't really happy with his run through stage five.
23:33Beaten to the fastest time by a couple of seconds by color.
23:37But nothing tire or car related had fazed him today.
23:41And that bode well for Saturday.
23:48This opening day couldn't finish early enough for the Hyundai team.
23:52It was as though this car had been struck down by kryptonite.
23:58The Hyundai's were battling each other.
24:01They should have been battling the Toyotas.
24:07Days like this are really hard to swallow.
24:11But at the end, they are not the end of the world.
24:15Yeah, that's about it.
24:19It's been definitely a demanding day.
24:23To be so far off the base.
24:26His first day back in this car for months.
24:30And it had been like Seb Auger had never been away.
24:33Confident and composed as ever.
24:36And right on the leader's tail.
24:41Adrian Formo was leaking more time.
24:44And not even Thierry's time could be matched.
24:46In fact, his pace at the end of the day wasn't how he wanted to finish this at all.
24:51Dropping behind Thierry and Owens on the leaderboard.
24:58Toyota wanted six.
25:01Six stage wins.
25:02A clean sweep of them today.
25:05Kyle Rovenpera had been extraordinary.
25:08This morning he wasn't convinced about how these Hankook tyres might work.
25:12He loved them now.
25:14And there it is.
25:18The Toyota Top 5.
25:20Faultless Finn Rovenpera out front by almost half a minute.
25:23A lockout of the podium for the team behind him.
25:32Utter domination by Toyota.
25:34But rally is a marathon not a sprint.
25:37Hyundai would fight back.
25:39Thank you for coming...
25:45The Fault in the event.
25:46The Fault in the event.
25:48The Fault in the event.
25:50The D eye.
25:51That Fault in the event...
25:54The D eye.
25:56The Fault in the event.
25:57What a deal, fuck.
25:59All of it.
