Transkrip
00:00A new rally.
00:30On the WRC calendar, that's always big news.
00:34Welcome Isla Scaniares.
00:38A rally round an island.
00:41A fan spectacular.
00:43And what do you think the fans here?
00:44They're amazing, aren't they?
00:46It's really great to see everybody today.
00:48So thanks to them and I just would like them, you know, to be, like, really loud.
00:53Oh, you're coming!
00:54It's cool that our championship has so many varieties.
01:00We go from Kenya to here, it's just incredible.
01:03I think it's the purest form of racing you can do.
01:08Are the Grand Canary roads looking like they will suit you?
01:12I would hope so.
01:13I like roads.
01:16I like when it's clean tarmac and I think it's going to be a weekend.
01:21It'll be interesting what's worse, which we really can enjoy.
01:23Driving the cars, those cars and from tarmac.
01:28It can be better right now.
01:32We've seen already at Eric Greenkey that this island is very special.
01:36Most cars still giving me a big smile to drive, so I'm looking forward to the race.
01:41Toyota have won every rally so far this season.
01:46Hale Mid-Evans, two wins from three.
01:50Now the Japanese team want to conquer this island in the Atlantic.
01:54Hyundai's job, to stop them.
01:57Early days in the season, it doesn't really mean anything at this stage,
02:00so we're just here to do the best job we can and that's it.
02:03So no target in the back.
02:06When you fight for a championship, you have to do every round,
02:08so I think, yeah, so far Hale Fin is doing a fantastic job
02:11and so far three win out of three for Toyota,
02:14so the aim is to try to continue that this weekend.
02:17Let's see what happens tomorrow morning.
02:19These days, you know, you have to be on it straight away from the start.
02:23Everyone survived the first Friday on Grand Canary.
02:32Some fared better than others.
02:36Gregoire Munster couldn't build any confidence, so he couldn't push.
02:40So he's in ninth.
02:45Adam Formos spent the morning as the leading Hyundai,
02:49out driving his world champion teammates.
02:51But they passed him as the day ended.
02:54Adrian in eighth.
02:59Getting to know the new, hard compound Hankook's tyre
03:02was the least of Hoytanex problems on Friday.
03:06No one could tell him why he was suffering.
03:10He's in seventh.
03:10It was so bad, it was funny.
03:17But Thierry Nerville couldn't laugh about a terrible day
03:20touring this sun-kissed island.
03:23Bring on Saturday.
03:25Nerville holds sick.
03:26From here on up, nothing but Toyotas with Takamoto Capsuta in fifth place.
03:35Sammy Piaro played safe with his tyre choices on Friday morning.
03:40Things went so well, he upped the speed.
03:43A fantastic fourth at the end of the day for the newcomer.
03:46Championship leader, Elvin Evans is in third place.
03:53Where there's no pressure on the Welshman, really,
03:56so big is his lead in this year's championship.
04:04It was as though Seb Auger hadn't been away.
04:06But this was his return after three months off.
04:12And he's right where he wants to be at the moment.
04:20But out front is Calarod and Perry.
04:23Who knocked everyone for six on this opening day.
04:28Perfection.
04:29At speed.
04:31And effortless too.
04:33The X-Champ is back.
04:35And how?
04:36Hyundai read the Friday night leaderboard and wept.
04:42The top five places were held by their rivals.
04:45This must change on Saturday.
04:49It's surprisingly nice to have this kind of tarmac rally.
04:52We haven't had it in a long time.
04:55So, yeah, it's quite nice.
04:57I don't know who was second fastest now,
04:59but this was quite good speed,
05:01what everybody is already driving.
05:02So, it's getting tighter all the time.
05:05You're big, big friends with Calarod, Robin Perry.
05:07He's won six stages today.
05:09I'm very, very happy, yeah, how he's going now.
05:12I spoke with him.
05:14He was struggling a lot at the beginning of this season.
05:16Now you see the...
05:17Oi, oi, oi.
05:18He's flying.
05:19One that really stood out today is Calais, for sure.
05:22It was really flying.
05:25No way we could match his pace.
05:27And I think tomorrow is, again, some beautiful stages to drive.
05:31Some...
05:31I think this long stage is pretty nice,
05:34so I think we should all enjoy it.
05:36It's been a very positive day for the team,
05:38but it's far from over.
05:48It's Saturday morning,
05:53and we held our breath
05:54as the rally leader,
05:56Calarod and Perra,
05:57left for battle.
05:59After yesterday,
06:00what have the Toyota team got up their sleeves today?
06:03Another day, another dollar,
06:23another chance to try and conquer Gran Canaria
06:25with this new hard compound tyre
06:28that seems such a mystery to some.
06:31Seven stages featured on Saturday's schedule.
06:45The town of Moyer got Saturday underway.
06:48No time for retail therapy.
06:50Adrian Formo needed immediate signs
06:52that the balance and the performance of his I-20
06:54was better than yesterday.
07:01What, if anything,
07:02had world champion Thierry Nerville changed on this I-20
07:05to make it fit for that?
07:11But the early signs weren't promising.
07:14After a couple of kilometres,
07:15things looked and felt good,
07:17but then the speed and the balance disappeared.
07:21It will be another long day.
07:23Once out of town,
07:34it was a rapid climb
07:35into the early morning low clouds.
07:38And Takemoto Kapsuta
07:39needed to climb too.
07:41Up our leaderboard.
07:43First target,
07:44Sammy Piyari.
07:45And this was a quick start.
07:52Round four of the championship
07:54was going according to plan
07:56for the championship leader,
07:57Elvin Evans.
08:00And everything said
08:02he had understood
08:03how to drive on these new
08:05hard compound Hancocks.
08:07But Elvin,
08:07fastest so far,
08:09still wary of any surprises out there.
08:11You didn't have to wait too long
08:16to see what Seb Auger's plan was this morning.
08:20To get right up on the shoulder
08:22of the rally leader
08:23and put him under pressure.
08:31But the Rovenpera rhythm
08:33was back
08:34from the get-go.
08:37He knew where to lean.
08:38He knew how far to lean.
08:40And for how long?
08:42It was another
08:42textbook test.
08:45Stage win.
08:46Rovenpera.
08:47Seven from seven.
08:55The podium places remain the same.
08:58Adrian Formaux
08:59is the quickest of the Hyundai's.
09:01Thierry Nerville
09:02is down to seventh.
09:03And still
09:04without an answer
09:05to his problems.
09:10It went off well
09:11for the first two Ks
09:12and then
09:12I struggled outstage.
09:14So
09:14not much I can do
09:16to be honest.
09:17Seb,
09:18your quickest through
09:18by almost six seconds.
09:20I have Kala two tenths slower
09:22on the last split.
09:23It's fun.
09:26So
09:26it doesn't mean
09:27we're going to win one stage
09:28but at least
09:29at least
09:30we have been on one split
09:31faster this weekend so far.
09:33You know what I mean?
09:34He has been
09:35very impressive yesterday.
09:37Today we'll see.
09:38The gaps are big
09:39so
09:40you know
09:40nothing crazy on our side
09:42just try to improve
09:43and see what happens.
09:44I have Kala a little bit quicker
09:45now on the last split.
09:49Look up the definition
09:50of dominance
09:51in the rally dictionary
09:52you'll see a picture
09:54of Kala Rovenpera.
09:56How long can it last?
09:58Let's see.
09:59One, two, three,
10:03three,
10:03three,
10:04three,
10:05three,
10:06three,
10:07three,
10:08three,
10:09three,
10:10three,
10:11three,
10:12three,
10:13three,
10:14three,
10:15three,
10:16three.
10:17It's day two of rally
10:18is Las Canarias
10:19and the Toyota domination
10:21goes on.
10:35So in sixth place
10:36the leading Hyundai
10:38Adrian Formeau
10:39already aware
10:41that these Toyotas
10:43were not to be beaten.
10:45The French front
10:45would just have to
10:46adapt as best he could
10:47and make the most
10:49of what opportunities
10:50came his way.
10:50We need to try and
10:57to stay in contact
10:58for the rest of the rally
10:59so I do my best.
11:02The balance is really good
11:03on the high grip
11:04but as soon as it's
11:05a smooth tarmac
11:06that we've got now
11:07it's really, really hard
11:09to drive the cars.
11:10Now,
11:11back to the Toyota show.
11:13Stage eight
11:15was bone dry,
11:16free of the low cloud.
11:18Good for the fisticuffs
11:19battle that had broken out
11:21between Takamoto Katsuta
11:23and Sammy Piyari.
11:28In this race,
11:29just outside the podium places,
11:31Piyari was in charge.
11:38This was fun.
11:39Everything was working for him.
11:41What could be better?
11:42Sammy went fastest so far.
11:50Sammy,
11:51you were saying yesterday
11:52you need to feel it
11:53through your ass.
11:54You must have felt it
11:55really well
11:56because nobody is quicker
11:57than you at the minute
11:58through this stage.
11:59The only with Kelly
12:00to come in.
12:01Yeah,
12:02that is quite fine.
12:03Really nice stage
12:05and so I did quite a lot.
12:07The longer this went on
12:09the more the burden
12:10eased from the shoulders.
12:11of Elvin Evans.
12:13Elvin might look frantic
12:14when he's driving
12:15but look a little closer
12:17and he was in
12:18the most comfortable
12:19of comfort zones.
12:20Get in the car,
12:26switch it on,
12:27get it on the stage
12:28and drive fast.
12:29Simple approach
12:30from the sport's
12:31multiple champion.
12:32Seb Auger,
12:33keeping the pressure
12:34on the leader,
12:35Cala Rompera.
12:36Cala Rompera.
12:43The Toyotas actually
12:44matched each other
12:45in this stage eight.
12:47Corner for corner.
12:49Little to choose
12:50between the three of them.
12:51Each managing the gap,
12:52especially Cala Rompera,
12:53managing the gap
12:54that mattered most.
12:56That was the one
12:57for the win.
12:59And this was another
13:01stage win,
13:02making it eight
13:03out of eight.
13:11He's done it.
13:12He's won it again.
13:13Cala, you had everyone
13:14a little bit worried there.
13:15We thought you might not
13:16win the stage,
13:17but you did.
13:18Yeah, that's good.
13:19How was it?
13:20It was nice.
13:21Worryingly for the others,
13:24it sounds like the rally leader
13:26is beginning to really
13:27enjoy himself.
13:28No changes on the leaderboard
13:30after stage eight.
13:37Pre-stage.
13:38The road to stage nine.
13:40High in the mountains.
13:42One stage to go this morning.
13:45Time going quicker for some
13:48of the drivers.
14:18So a driver's first battle is against the clock.
14:22But it's like Hyundai have an analogue clock this weekend.
14:26Toyota, all digital.
14:30Oi, Tamek's best hope. Someone ahead made a mistake.
14:34Then he can make up some of this time. But everyone was glued to the road.
14:42This event, this weekend, with these new tyres, Toyota have
14:46made this into a one-make series.
14:50So it was about bragging rights inside the team. Takamoto Katsuta
14:54still had his eye on Sammy Piyari in fourth place.
15:00A great run on that previous stage.
15:02Now, could Sammy put a couple of fast stage
15:06times together? The conditions were drying nicely.
15:10The gap to Taka was now over nine seconds.
15:16Glorious, sweeping mountain roads.
15:20And this tarmac?
15:22The envy of the world.
15:32Elvin Evans had no time to look at the scenery.
15:36Elvin's never happy.
15:38The car was working fine, but I wasn't happy with how I drove in there.
15:48So, there's no excuses.
15:50It's fine margins though, isn't it?
15:52No, it is. But that's the name of the game.
15:56Just to show he could, Seb Augier found a little bit of the old Seb magic.
16:02Enough to beat everybody.
16:04Well, everybody apart from Toyota's boy wonder this weekend.
16:08These roads, in particular, they can scare people just a little bit.
16:14Even the best.
16:26This very fast section, with massive drop on the side.
16:32Maybe a little bit too old for that one.
16:34The flag, on the roof of the car, of the youngest flying Finn.
16:40He was making it look easy.
16:42He was a natural, but a machine at the same time.
16:50Mind you, Kala Rovenpera has won 13 stages on the trot before,
16:56so he still has a long way to go to match that performance.
17:08The Rovenpera lead has broken the 30-second mark.
17:11The Toyota's still a handful.
17:14No change in order there.
17:16Formo leads the i20s.
17:20Back at the Gran Canaria Stadium, it's midday service.
17:27Any answers yet to the Hyundai woes?
17:31I would have liked to change a bit of differentials if I could,
17:34but unfortunately again, we are also very limited once we are on a rally.
17:37We have only basically one in the same option,
17:40so it's not much you can do once you're on the race, unfortunately.
17:44And then it makes it challenging for the team and for us as well.
17:47Well, Kala, it's now nine from nine, you keep going.
17:50I mean, Seb's come a little bit closer to you,
17:52but you seem determined to not let him intrude on this monopoly of stage wind.
17:56Yeah, we are just doing what we need to do.
17:58We just keep up the good flow, and yeah, when you drive properly,
18:02you don't make mistakes, so yeah, just enjoying ourselves.
18:05We really had fun in the car.
18:10Saturday afternoon with Takamoto Katsutu.
18:19And he could only stand back and admire teammate Kala driving for fun.
18:25And far away, the best of these five leading Toyotas.
18:30Five. What a situation.
18:36Others in this rally were resorting to extreme measures
18:39to try and get their cars to work properly on these smooth asphalt roads.
18:45Not Sammy Piari.
18:47Everything was going according to plan for the youngster.
18:50No surprises today for him.
18:56A reality check for Elvin Evans, maybe.
18:58There was still no need for any big risks from the Welshman.
19:01Elvin in third place.
19:03Caution.
19:04Consistency.
19:05Those were the watch words for him now.
19:08And be careful with these times.
19:12The crowds were out to see the very best.
19:15And the best this week were all driving Toyotas.
19:20Seb Augier.
19:21But not all of Seb Augier,
19:22because the Frenchmen had taken a look at the big drops on this loop
19:25and thought, well, maybe not.
19:29No need to take the risks of a younger Augier.
19:35False scent from Calla Rovenpere.
19:38It's his favourite scent.
19:40It's summed up his weekend so far.
19:42Such swagger.
19:43Such confidence.
19:45But such concentration and enjoyment.
19:49Another stage win.
19:50The lead kept growing.
19:56Ten out of ten for Calla.
19:57The winning streak goes on.
20:00Big gaps now.
20:01The leaderboard remains the same.
20:05Any driver not in a Toyota has been struggling this weekend.
20:12But you still need to keep it on the road.
20:16The island of Gran Canaria.
20:17Over 200 kilometres out into the Atlantic Ocean.
20:18A spectacular place to drive a rally car.
20:19Great place to drive a rally car.
20:20Great place to drive a rally car.
20:21Great place to drive a rally car.
20:22Great place to drive a rally car.
20:23The island of Gran Canaria.
20:24The island of Gran Canaria.
20:25Over 200 kilometres out into the Atlantic Ocean.
20:28A spectacular place to drive a rally car.
20:29Great place to drive a rally car fast.
20:30But not too fast.
20:31As Elvin Evans has explained, the place can still surprise you.
20:32And after three and a half kilometres here, a wake-up call for Greg Munster in Australia.
20:35The island of Gran Canaria.
20:38The island of Gran Canaria.
20:39The island of Gran Canaria.
20:40The island of Gran Canaria.
20:41Over 200 kilometres out into the Atlantic Ocean.
20:42a place to drive a rally car.
20:48Great place to drive a rally car fast, but not too fast.
20:53As Elvin Evans has explained, the place can still surprise you.
20:57And after three and a half kilometres here, a wake-up call for Greg Munster in stage 11.
21:02Monster a tad too fast, going into that right-hand corner.
21:15The first car to go off this weekend.
21:18Some helping hands and a good shove got the Luxemburger back into the event.
21:28I can also cruise and nothing happens and we don't learn anything, so yeah.
21:32It was a bit too optimistic on the braking, but that's also what happens when you try
21:37to push while the car is not working well, so.
21:41So what do you do when you get to a place like this, on asphalt like this, and your car won't
21:46rotate, it won't turn into corners?
21:50Ask the Hyundai team.
21:51That's been the thing bothering them.
21:54Thierry Nerville, the quickest of the i-20s in this stage.
21:57Up at the sharp end, former champ, Seb Auger, waited.
22:06Was his younger team-mate, Rovenpera, going to put a foot wrong?
22:09If he did, Seb would be there to take over.
22:13Or was he waiting in vain?
22:14No one was able to make any real progress and threaten his dominance.
22:25Everything was working for him.
22:27Nothing a concern.
22:29The clock just loved it.
22:31Does your contract have a stage-winning bonus in it?
22:38I unfortunately not.
22:40Hyundai said this rally now had turned into a test session.
22:45Thierry Nerville had hinted at as much this morning.
22:48There was little to gain from anything else.
22:50Two days to compare themselves to their rivals, Toyota.
22:54They would try every trick in the book and see what worked.
22:57We tried many things, you know.
22:59Starting springs, anti-roll bars, dampers, dampers clicks, for sure.
23:03We tried really many, many, many things the last nearly 48 hours.
23:09But, yeah, nothing really unlocked the performance.
23:14You could see sometimes the drivers, the street drivers,
23:17doing very similar time with a completely different setup.
23:21And is that coming down to the way that the Hankook hard tyre is working?
23:25Yeah, I mean, that's a limiting factor.
23:27So you really need to have the perfect car to be, you know,
23:32always on the maximum, on the peak performance of this tyre.
23:36I mean, with our not perfect setup,
23:38we are struggling to stay really on the peak of performance.
23:41And we really need a perfect circuit car to be fast on these roads.
23:45And we don't have it yet.
23:47It seemed as though Toyota did have that perfect car this weekend,
23:51but it also needed a driver with a clever head.
23:56Another great day for youngster Sammy Pajari until here...
23:59Sammy Jaris ran out of road
24:04and then wallop the stateside barrier, badly.
24:08He limped on, a little way,
24:11but he knew that was his mistake.
24:15Shouldn't have happened.
24:16So now, there were four Toyotas.
24:19The Elvin Evans camp had already been doing the maths.
24:24Their man was outscoring the two Hyundai world champions
24:28behind him in the title race.
24:30Lots of reasons, then, to keep things extra neat,
24:33tidy and finish.
24:35And not to count any chickens.
24:37This was the last we would see of the world's finest out in the mountains.
24:45It was down to the football stadium for a closing super special.
24:49Seb Auger ended this stage a shade slower than Elvin.
24:56Then, the rally leader.
24:58The unputdownable Karel Rothen-Perry.
25:01Driving for stage win number 12.
25:03And taking it by 4.8 seconds.
25:0912 out of 12.
25:11Perfection.
25:17The Rothen-Perry lead now 45.7 seconds.
