00:00How are you? You look absolutely gorgeous. Can you tell me a bit about what you're wearing tonight?
00:05Yes, I'm wearing Charles Harbison, and he was inspired from the film Daughters of the Dust by Julie Dash.
00:12And in that, it's a story of a family of women from the Gullah Islands in 1902 who are getting ready to make their way north.
00:20And there's beautiful, beautiful cinematography in there.
00:23And there's one iconic scene of all of them in their gorgeous white gowns on the beach with tattered parasols and whatnot.
00:31And just claiming their heritage and their culture and trying to hold on to it before they move north.
00:36And so that was his inspiration.
00:38Well, how amazing that you got the chance to express that tonight with this theme.
00:41What was your reaction when you heard tonight's theme?
00:44Oh, I was so thrilled. I was so thrilled.
00:47You know, honestly, I thought, it's about time. It's about time.
00:52And someone said, someone just asked me where I think, you know, our black creativity came from and why is it what it is?
00:58And I said, because when we were taken away from our motherland, that's all we had.
01:03All we had was ourselves, our souls, our bodies.
01:07And from that, we survived and thrived.
01:11And who are some of your fashion icons when it comes to dandyism?
01:14Dandyism. When it comes to dandyism, my granddaddy, may he rest in peace.
01:20He always looked sharp.
01:22Most of the men in my family, actually, my dad, too, was a sharp dresser.
01:28That was important to them.
01:29It was important to the culture.
01:30It was very important to them.
01:32You look right and you do that not only for yourself to claim and be proud of yourself,
01:37but you do that for our race.
01:38You look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right and you look right.
