The three promoted teams are set for Premier League relegation AGAIN, the second season in a row! But why is the Premier League no longer built for promoted teams? Where have their attempts at survival gone wrong? And what can be done to close the gap? Ryan talks through his findings and analysis for FourFourTwo

00:00Hello and welcome back to 442. My name is Ryan and it's a pleasure to be back on the channel again and it's a bit of a difficult subject to be talking about I suppose if you're down in that bottom three if you're a championship fan or even one of those fans of the clubs down at the bottom of the league this season because it's been a strange season and as just like well last season all three promoted sides are going straight back down again and it's my job to have a look through this and think why is this happening?
00:30Now I can get exactly why people are outraged about this because small clubs clubs that are now trying to come up and make a name for themselves in the premier league it's become a difficult task it's no longer quite what it used to be where the second season syndrome is really the only thing to go about you know your home games were going to carry you through and that's what the traditional 36 points of getting promoted into the premier league was all about it's really a strange one really when you look at the nature of particularly two of the three clubs that have just come up
00:59obviously clubs in southampton and leicester very very established premier league sides over the years
01:04leicester literally winning the premier league in 2016 fa cup winners in 2021 regulars in europe in champions league and europa league
01:13southampton nine years in the premier league created some absolutely worldy players in sadio mane gareth bale you name it they've
01:20made some unbelievably world-class fantastic players over the years so how is it possible that these clubs now
01:27i just they can't compete right there it's impossible as a business for example when you look at leicester and
01:33you look at ipswich there's a big stark difference in finances and leicester as we all know are financially
01:39in a lot of trouble they've actually faced a lot of problems with psr rulings in the recent years obviously
01:44being forced to sell their star man and kin and jewsbury hall for 30 million it's their promotion
01:49this season it's it's a hard one to get off the bat from you know you've just had a massive points
01:54deduction things are you know they're stacked against you from the get-go and as for southampton on the
01:59other hand well let's put it this way their squad just is not good enough to be in the premier league
02:05right i don't think anyone can really argue with that they're on nine points at the moment and they're
02:10very much on course to definitely beat that derby record for all-time lowest record points in the
02:16premier league season and to be honest if you watch them play you would not be surprised at all
02:22there is one thing that all three of these sides do have in common and that is their expansive style
02:26of play the way they like to play football particularly if you base it on their championship
02:30seasons last season as it has to be said especially in southampton's case the reason they're going down
02:36is one because they're not good enough and two because their players simply cannot play the football
02:40that they try and do right that's that's not up for debate we all saw under russell martin they
02:45brought in jurich and arguably made it worse and that's really the story of their entire season
02:50giving away cheap goals and realistically not really being in games anywhere near enough to be
02:55able to compete at the top level the difference however then when you look at a club like ipswich and
02:59this is the one i wanted to maybe focus the video around a little bit more now ipswich are a fascinating
03:04club because they've come up back-to-back seasons they've had a double promotion they've spent 130
03:10odd billion pounds and realistically if you look at that from an outside looking in it's a lot of money
03:15right of course it is but at the same time you've also got what two generations of squad two leagues
03:20level of squad to then have to replenish and rightly so however there's big difference perhaps in how
03:26ipswich have done it versus how southampton and leicester have now ipswich have you know no real
03:31premier league background barring 22 years ago and you know it's changed a little bit since then as
03:36we all know but you would argue that you know realistically of every other club the other 17
03:41you would say in the premier league they're the only ones that have really put up a fight in looking
03:44like they're going to be anywhere near the rest of those clubs and it begs the question why why are
03:50they nowhere near these clubs they spent 150 million maybe they can compete with other clubs in the
03:54premier league but why is it they're still so far adrift you've got west ham so close to the
03:59relegation zone but yet realistically nowhere near the relegation zone do you get what i'm trying to
04:04say because clubs now have had a bit of a tendency of almost not wanting to go down but going down
04:10so they get their parachute payments when they come back up and even if they do it again that yo-yo cycle
04:15works in their favor see fulham as a good example right these parachute payments pay what 30 million
04:21pounds per season it's around 90 million over three years it's a very wealthy amount of money for a club
04:26that's just been promoted out of the championship and the reason for these parachute payments is
04:30that these clubs don't have to have that huge struggle of when they get relegated so they can
04:34make a better squad for when they do and as you know fans of championship clubs they're not going
04:39to be so happy about that right because realistically every single club that's coming down have effectively
04:44got more money more budget better players and are going to come back up again and that's what we're
04:49seeing this season last season it's the same three clubs when you look in a championship we've got
04:53leeds burnley and sheffield united all coming back up again and as we knew before the season started
04:59you could have made them predictions and not been too far off and whether leeds do or don't come up
05:03the point remains that three of those clubs have all been in the premier league within the last five
05:08years and this is where it gets a little bit political perhaps when you look into the efl and the
05:13premier league you've almost got this growing gap which you want to be able to replenish but that gap
05:18then gets bigger in the championship because the rich clubs at the top seem to just keep coming back up
05:23because they've got an overpowered squad in comparison to the rest of it in the other side
05:27of the fence in the premier league where even if they do come back up they don't have the negotiation
05:32pulling power they can't then go and convince teams to realistically bring in players much better
05:37than championship level because you know if you're a player why are you going to want to go to a newly
05:43promoted side these days you know that you can get a move to bournemouth fulham brighton brentford and
05:48realistically all of these sides are going to be quite comfortable and stable in staying in that level
05:52but then let's talk about the ip switch point of view right because ip switch are very well run
05:57they've done this the right way in fact the money that they've made with all these promotions and
06:02getting promoted obviously now in the premier league spending that money is considerable but they're
06:06still making a training ground they're investing their money into new recruitment and they're starting
06:11to become this data driven side and realistically that's what you now have to be to be able to compete
06:16at the top level because if you don't necessarily have the finances to compete you've maybe got to do it
06:21in a more obscure a different way a genius way perhaps and that's where you've got clubs particularly
06:26like brentford for example who are a side that realistically are known are not much bigger than
06:31what they were when they're in league one league two and when you're ip switch for example when you're
06:35only playing in league one two years ago you know that pulling power is not quite there so you have
06:40to try and find a different way a different measure to bring in these players and liam de lapp has been
06:45a really nice example of that okay he's he's been more established at a bigger club but your recruitment
06:50is strong enough to bring in a player as reputable as he is however it's still not just quite enough
06:56to be able to compete with the rest of the league and that gap is only getting bigger and to be honest
07:02did the credit of because i know people will mention them nottingham forest are a great example
07:06of a squad that has recently come up but then let's not forget how much money they've spent they've
07:11effectively bought 30 40 signings through the door spending a lot of money with a considerable
07:16business owner that as we all knew when they first came up is a very wealthy guy and if they were to
07:22ever stay up for a year or two it was inevitable that they were going to be able to compete not
07:27just for champions league but in around that top 10 let's call it and that's the difference now it's
07:32the it's the money that these clubs have and if they don't necessarily have the money they need a
07:37genius and if you don't have that what do you have and that's perhaps what ipswich may have to
07:42go through because if you look at next season you might think well okay they're going to go down
07:46right this is not controversial to say anymore they are going to go down and realistically you'd
07:52probably put a good amount of money on thinking they're going to come up and that's because they've
07:56got you know they're going to get this parachute payment they've already got a good squad they've got
08:00a fantastic manager in kira mckenna as we all know if they can keep hold of him he's managed to adapt
08:05his squad this season not been afraid to even chop and change his goalkeeper by the way i mean he's a
08:10he's a very very talented young manager and if they're coming up and down and building that kitty
08:15up for more and more money you could see them in the next five years competing in that european spot
08:21hopefully for their sake anyway and you know when you've got burnley competing at the top end of the
08:26championship now and dominating it really you start to think okay something needs to change something
08:32needs to happen you know clubs can't keep having their players poached because even if you are a
08:37newly promoted championship club you're not going to then be able to just go and buy players from the
08:42championship because players in the championship top end players of the championship know that they
08:46can get moves to a european side or a team that's going to be chasing europe and it's the levels now
08:52and because these clubs aren't being relegated the 17th and upwards they're all getting stronger every
08:59single year every single time this happens unless remember before last season the last time that
09:04all three promoted clubs actually went straight back down again was 1997 98 season what something
09:12needs to change this can't go on you can't just have the bottom 17 18 being separated by 15 points
09:19when you've only got what six games left of the season is crazy we all knew who was being relegated
09:25before the season even started and when i talk about geniuses right you're probably thinking but
09:29ryan what do you mean by geniuses you've got the kevin de bruyne's you've got the pet guardiolis of
09:34the world but then you've also got genius owners and these genius clubs i would call probably brentford
09:39is a very very good example of that matthew benham is a absolute genius when it comes to football
09:45probabilities and he likes to balance probability based on well everything he does at brentford and when
09:50you look at brentford's spend and wage bill over the years they're completely punching above their
09:55weight when brentford first got promoted no one truly knew what to expect maybe they thought okay
10:01give them a year give them two years and then they'll get relegated again you know they'll just
10:05be another flash in the pan but i think that benham has done a remarkable job in making sure that that
10:10hasn't happened and benham much like tony bloom has done a very similar thing at brighton again a club
10:15that's a very small club but completely changed the dynamic of that based on data-driven analysis
10:21based on player recruitment that's out of this world and algorithms basically watching football
10:26through computers and this is really just how football is now right and i think ipswich are
10:31trying to do a nice similar type of thing with their data-driven analysis trying to bring in young
10:36players and trying to do things the right way at the end of the day the money will always win
10:41because no matter what players you bring in no matter what obscurities you want to bring in
10:45and no matter what genius manager you would like to try and change the dynamic if they haven't got
10:49the money financially they can't compete and the big clubs will unfortunately poach them away from
10:54you and that's how it is so there we have it parachute payments quality of squads recruitment a lot of
11:01things to be taken away from this video a lot of things that maybe could even change on the back of
11:05the video we'll see what happens um i'm just joking unless you never know right 442 is a pulling power
11:10these days make sure you'll subscribe make sure you leave a like as well it'd be really appreciated of

11:20see you all hopefully very very soon and goodbye thank you
