00:15as the interim prime minister after the coalition's defeat in the presidential race.
00:20Sudan's paramilitary rebel group RSF launched drone attacks on the Red Sea city of Port
00:27Sudan on Tuesday.
00:30The European Union has set 2027 as the target for ending its dependence on Russian energy.
00:35A roadmap is presented for eliminating the last imports of gas, oil and uranium.
00:42Conservative leader Friedrich Merz has been elected the new German chancellor in the second
00:46round of voting in the Bundestag.
00:50His previous failure to win support in the German parliament was the first in the country's
00:56post-war history.
00:58Friedrich Merz needed a majority of 316 out of 630 votes, well short of the 328 seats held
01:11by his coalition.
01:13That coalition is led by Merz's centre-right Christian Democratic Union and its Bavarian sister
01:18party, the Christian Social Union.
01:22They were joined by former Chancellor Olaf Scholz's centre-left Social Democrats.
01:28Because the first round was a secret ballot, it was not immediately clear and might never
01:33be known who had defected from Merz's camp.
01:38The far-right alternative for Germany has demanded Merz step aside and called for fresh elections
01:44following his historic defeat.
01:51Romania's interim president appointed Cattelin Prudoi, the current interior minister, as the
01:55country's new prime minister on Tuesday.
01:58Prudoi, a member of the National Liberal Party, will lead a caretaker government for up to 45
02:04days with limited powers.
02:06He steps in after Marcel Cialacu resigned on Monday, following their coalition's pool results
02:13in Sunday's presidential rerun.
02:16After casting his vote on Sunday, Prudoi said he voted for a presidency that would ensure
02:21balance and dialogue amid Romania's ongoing political turmoil.
02:24George Simeon, winner of Romania's presidential first round of votes, defended his political
02:35stance during an exclusive interview with Euronews Romania.
02:40He addressed frequent accusations of being anti-Ukrainian, pro-Russian and Eurosceptic.
02:47Simeon says he advocates for a Europe of sovereign nations and opposes further EU federalization.
02:55I am a Euro-realist.
02:56We want a Europe of nations.
02:59And I am the person who fought the most before entering the politics with Russian propaganda.
03:09Our problems with Ukraine is not about hatred, about opposing something.
03:15It is about Ukrainians that must respect international treaties and the right of national minorities.
03:22We have half a million of Romanian speakers in Ukraine and they don't have the right to
03:30school and to church.
03:33Simeons insisted he is firmly pro-NATO and supports increased defence spending.
03:41For us, being a member of NATO is vital.
03:45We sacrificed a lot for being admitted to NATO.
03:51We invested a lot.
03:52When speaking of the U.S., Simeon expressed strong alignment with the U.S. Republican Party
03:58and the MAGA movement.
04:00The second round of presidential elections are scheduled for May the 8th.
04:10As the Trump administration pushes forward with its mass deportation plans, it now says
04:15it will pay illegal immigrants $1,000 to return to their home countries.
04:21The Department of Homeland Security said it would also pay for travel assistance and that people
04:26who use an app called CBP Home would be deprioritized for detention and removal by immigration authorities.
04:34Trump made immigration enforcement and mass deportation a centrepiece of his campaign, but
04:39the execution remains costly.
04:43The Department of Homeland Security said it costs over $17,000 to arrest, detain and remove
04:48someone who is in the U.S. illegally.
04:52Paying someone to leave voluntarily would cost much less, but critics questioned the strategy's
04:57effectiveness.
04:59One 2011 study found that similar programs around the world generally failed at encouraging large
05:04numbers of people to leave.
05:10U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed the active duty military to shed 20% of its
05:16four-star general officers.
05:19He also told the National Guard to shed 20% of its top positions and directed the military
05:25to cut an additional 10% of its general and flag officers across the force.
05:30The move is a continuation of deep cuts to senior ranks at the Pentagon since the start
05:35of Donald Trump's second term as president.
05:39Hegseth says the cuts will promote efficiency, but critics worry they could result in a more
05:43politicized force.
05:46Trump or Hegseth have already fired several top general officers since January, including
05:51the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the U.S. Army's only two female four-star officers.
05:57Hegseth claimed in a memo on Monday that the aim was to free the military from unnecessary
06:02bureaucratic layers.
06:04But that does not mean...
06:09Sudan's paramilitary rebel group RSF launched drone attacks on the Red Sea city of Port Sudan
06:17on Tuesday morning, military officials reported.
06:21At the airport, a hotel and a port were all apparently hit in the attacks.
06:26According to local media, the strikes also ignited fires.
06:30There have been no reports yet of casualties or of the full extent of the damage.
06:36Port Sudan also serves as an interim seat for Sudan's military-allied government.
06:43Information Minister Khalid al-Eysa accuses the United Arab Emirates of arming the paramilitary
06:50RSF claims the UAE has rejected.
06:54A similar attack had already happened on Sunday on the Red Sea port city.
06:59Since April 2023, at least 24,000 people have been killed.
07:05The U.S. President posted on his social media page on 5th of May that he would impose a
07:13100% tariff on films made outside the U.S.
07:18The American film industry is dying at a rapid pace.
07:20Other countries are offering all kinds of incentives to lure filmmakers and studios away
07:24from the U.S.
07:25That's why I'm authorizing the Department of Commerce to immediately begin the process
07:29of imposing a 100% tariff on all foreign produced films coming into our country,
07:34Donald Trump said in his post.
07:40The details are not known at all, but if it does happen, a lot of countries will be
07:44very badly off, including Hungary, where last year film spending was close to a billion dollars.
07:50The difference is in the future of the movie, according to the English-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s.
07:54We are already talking about a global film production.
07:58In short, there is no big film, which is not a global film.
08:02Imagine on a Mission Impossible film, which is a very good scene.
08:05Or a James Bond film film.
08:06The film is played at least four countries.
08:08But whatever, I don't know how many, I don't know how many of them,
08:12George Orwell, Blade Runner, these are all kinds of places,
08:16and this is how this cultural culture comes from.
08:19I think that, as it's been changed,
08:21the process is a process,
08:23it's a process, it's a process,
08:25and now this is a series of more films.
08:27It's a legal series,
08:29they will probably find a solution,
08:31the current stage is a moreover,
08:34and we understand,
08:35we have such a gift.
08:37We also want to make more films in Madrid.
09:07The European Union has set 2027 as the target for ending its dependence on Russian energy.
09:23On Tuesday, the European Commission presented its roadmap for eliminating the last imports
09:28of gas, oil and uranium.
09:31Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the EU has already significantly reduced its independence.
09:37Gas imports have fallen from 45% in 2021 to 19% last year.
09:42They should reach 13% by 2025.
09:46The share of Russian oil has fallen from 27% in 2022 to 3% today.
09:52For the Commission, it's necessary to go further in order to avoid any blackmail from Moscow.
09:57Putin has shown many times that he's willing to weaponize energy and that is obviously
10:02not a very nice situation to be in for the European Union's member states.
10:06So that's reason number one.
10:08Reason number two is that we have been buying Russian gas and energy in the last couple
10:14of years for billions of euros.
10:15And those money, they go directly to the war chest of Putin.
10:20And that is of course also something that we need to stop.
10:23To achieve this, the Commission is proposing to ban new contracts with Russian gas suppliers
10:27by the end of the year.
10:29For the remaining imports, the longer term contracts purchases will have to cease in 2027.
10:36The Energy Commissioner hopes that the proposal will be adopted by all member states.
10:40However, unanimity is not required in order to avoid any paralysis caused by a capital.
10:46Hungary and Slovakia have expressed their reservations in the past.
10:50It's also very clear that the proposals that I put forward today do not need unanimity.
10:56So a qualified majority can adopt this.
11:01And this also means that if there are a few countries that do not support, then unfortunately
11:07we will have to go ahead anyway.
11:09Because this is so important for the security of the Union.
11:12It's so important for the solidarity that we need to show with Ukraine that even though
11:20I obviously hope for full support, a majority can also vote this through.
11:26Unlike sanctions, these import bans do not have to be renewed at regular intervals.
11:32Which again is a way of preventing a member state from blocking the Union.
