00:00For our provincial news, FIVOX warns that the Makilala Malungon segment of the Cotabato fault system has the potential to generate a major earthquake in Mindanao similar to the so-called Big One.
00:14Stephen Patron from the Philippine Information Agency Soxargen has more.
00:18The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or FIVOX has reiterated that earthquakes are unpredictable, cautioning the public to remain vigilant and prepared at all times.
00:31FIVOX General Santos City Station Officer-in-Charge Nanidan Lag also clarified that FIVOX cannot predict the specific date and time nor the location of an earthquake,
00:42citing that there is no existing technology or scientific instrument, locally or globally, that can predict the occurrence of an earthquake.
00:50According to her, among the active faults in Region 12, the Makilala Malungon fault has the potential to produce the Big One, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
00:59This is followed by the North Cotabato and South Columbia faults, both of which can generate a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, the Mlang fault has a potential of 6.7 magnitude, the Makilala fault has 6.5 magnitude, and the Balabag fault for 6.4 magnitude.
01:42FIVOX reminded the public that preparedness and awareness remain the best weapons for protection against the risks of natural hazards.
01:51Together with FIVOX, the Office of the Civil Defense, who serves as the Secretariat and Chair of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council or RDRMC in the region,
02:02also emphasized the significance of a whole-society approach to disaster preparedness, especially in the anticipation of earthquakes.
02:11From the Philippine Information Agency Soxygen, Stephen Patron, Balitang Pambansa.
