00:01Who is Robert Francis Prevost?
00:03The new pope may be relatively new in the Vatican, but the American pontiff boasts decades
00:07of serving experience.
00:10Romania's presidential candidates Nicodan and Giorgio Simeone participated in a three-hour
00:15debate hosted by Euronews Romania ahead of the May 18th runoff vote.
00:22Robert Prevost has been elected as the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of
00:28the Catholic Church.
00:30The newly elected pope made his first appearance in St. Peter's Square to a cheering crowd.
00:41Moments earlier, white smoke rose above the Sistine Chapel and the bells of St. Peter's
00:47Basilica rang loudly.
00:50Cardinals had just elected the 267th pope to lead the Catholic Church.
00:57A missionary who spent his career ministering in Peru and leads the Vatican's powerful office
01:03of bishops, Prevost will take the name of Leo XIV.
01:08He was elected on just the second day of the conclave, where he needed at least 89 votes of
01:15the 133 cardinals who participated.
01:19Leo XIV will succeed Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday.
01:32The world waited in excitement to find out the identity of the new pope after white smoke
01:36billowed above the Sistine Chapel, indicating that the conclave had reached a successful ballot.
01:42In comes the American Cardinal, Robert Francis Prevost.
01:46Born in September 1955 in Chicago, Prevost, who's taken the name Leo XIV, became the first
01:52U.S. born to become head of the Catholic Church.
01:56Prevost has extensive experience, having lived in Peru for many years, serving first as a missionary
02:01and then archbishop.
02:03In 2014, the late Pope Francis appointed him to run the Diocese of Chiclayo, where he remained
02:08in that position until 2023.
02:11Pope Leo XIV also acquired Peruvian citizenship during his residence in the Latin American
02:16country.
02:17In 2023, Francis brought Prevost to the Vatican to serve as the powerful head of the office
02:22that vets bishop nominations from around the world.
02:26He also simultaneously served as president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America,
02:31overseeing the Catholic hierarchy in the part of the world with the most Catholics.
02:35Prevost was also twice elected general, or top leader of the Augustinian religious order,
02:41founded by St. Augustine in the 13th century.
02:49Euronews Romania hosted the two presidential candidates, Bucharest Mayor Niko Shordan and
02:54Alliance for the Union of Romania's leader George Simeone, in a fiery three-hour debate.
02:59A wide range of topics were discussed, among them Russia's invasion of Ukraine, where the
03:04two candidates offer sharply differing attitudes.
04:06Speaking on how they'd vote on further EU's support for Ukraine when representing Romania
04:12at the European Council, the pair continued to court disagreement.
04:51și fără a prioritiza alte state.
05:29De Euronews debate came at a crucial time ahead of the run-off vote set for the 18th of May.
05:35Hard-right frontrunner Simeone won the first round with around 40% of the votes,
05:39while Dan, running as an independent, secured just under 21%.
05:44The U.S. and U.K. have signed a trade deal,
05:52the first to be secured since the Trump administration announced sweeping global tariffs on foreign goods.
05:59The deal eases trade barriers on a few specific sectors, meaning it is not a wide-ranging trade pact.
06:05With this deal, the U.K. joins the United States in affirming that reciprocity and fairness
06:12is an essential and vital principle of international trade.
06:18The deal includes billions of dollars of increased market access for American exports,
06:24especially in agriculture, dramatically increasing access for American beef, ethanol,
06:29and virtually all of the products produced by our great farmers.
06:36U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the strong bond between the two countries,
06:40saying it was fitting that the deal was sealed on VE Day.
06:44As you say, Donald, the timing couldn't be more apt,
06:49because not only was it 80 years ago today that victory came for Europe
06:58after and at the end of the Second World War,
07:01but of course on that day the U.K. and the U.S. stood together as the closest of allies.
07:07In return for increased market access to American products,
07:11the U.S. will remove its 25% tariff on steel and aluminium,
07:15which Trump imposed on all foreign imports of these metals.
07:19Although Trump is referring to the breakthrough as a full and comprehensive deal,
07:24experts stress that this exaggerates the scope of the agreement.
07:27Trump also conceded that there is still work to do,
07:30and that the deal will be concluded in the coming weeks.
07:41France marked 80 years since the end of the Second World War on Thursday.
07:46French President Emmanuel Macron led the commemoration of the victory in Europe
07:55when Nazi Germany surrendered in 1945.
08:01But 80 years on, only a few who lived through the horrors of the war remained to tell their story.
08:29Marciana Marchinkowski was only nine years old when Paris was liberated
08:33after years of Nazi occupation.
08:36She fears today's younger generations have lost touch with what that moment meant.
08:57With Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine raging on at Europe's doorstep,
09:04the past feels closer than ever for many of these veterans.
09:3080 years later, the message from those who remember is clear.
09:39Peace cannot be taken for granted.
09:45The Netherlands is toughening its stance on Israel's war in Gaza,
09:48a significant shift for a traditional loyal ally.
09:52On Wednesday, Dutch Foreign Minister Kaspar Weltkamp
09:54said Israel's aid blockade violates international law,
09:58urging a review of the trade deal in place between the EU and Israel.
10:02He called his country's stance a clear signal
10:05due to the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza,
10:09telling the EU's high representative Kayakalas
10:11that Israel is violating their agreements.
10:13What we're doing here is giving a very clear signal,
10:17a very clear signal,
10:19and drawing a line in the sand,
10:21because the situation in the Gaza Strip is dismal,
10:25this catastrophic humanitarian situation,
10:28what we see is that the Israeli blockade for humanitarian aid and energy,
10:33getting energy supply to Gaza, is continuing.
10:38What we also see as a new development
10:40is the decision by the Israeli Security Cabinet,
10:44the Prime Minister Netanyahu last Sunday,
10:46to intensify the war effort.
10:48What I also see as statements by several Israeli ministers
10:51of calling for re-occupying the Gaza Strip,
10:57total destruction of the Gaza Strip.
10:59This is not something we can bear.
11:02The Netherlands now intends to veto any extension of the trade pact,
11:06pending an EU review into Israel's compliance with its terms.
11:09Although Dutch Prime Minister Dixhoof supported Weltkamp's tougher line,
11:15coalition partner Heert Wilders criticized Weltkamp as a weak minister.
11:20Other EU ministers who gathered in Warsaw backed the Dutch concerns,
11:24with Belgium's Maxime Prevost calling the situation an absolute shame.
11:28Luxembourg's Xavier Betel said Israel seems to be listening to no one.
11:34Kalas confirmed that the ministers will examine the Dutch proposal in Brussels on May 20,
11:39adding that other possible responses to Israel's Gaza plans will also be discussed.
