00:00PK here has really hurt herself. She was across the yard and she and two of the others flew
00:22towards me ran towards me flew towards me and I saw her land really hard on the ground and
00:31immediately start limping. We found a stone I guess it was a stone lodged in her foot removed that but
00:43I don't think that that's the problem and look at her she's trying to get up we rolled her over and
00:50looked at her and examined her but I just hope she didn't break her leg. Hopefully she's sprained it.
00:58She keeps kicking at it with her with her beak like the actual bottom of the foot hurts.
01:08Um but I don't know if it's her foot that hurts. There's nothing on her foot. It's a lot like what
01:24Miss Cloud did and Miss Cloud hurt her leg supposedly just doing a dust bath and that's what PK was doing
01:35and then they came running across the yard and she's she's a heavier bird than she used to be.
01:41She's not fat but she's got some some weight and she just like bam I'm like oh man so I don't know
01:50if she landed on something sharp or if she just landed so hard that it sprained her leg. I just
01:57hope it's not broken. Oh jeez. PK come on honey. Oh see she's just having a.
02:08I don't know what you did exactly but I wish I knew if it was the foot.
02:13She does not want me to touch her. See she acts like there's something wrong with the
02:24the pad of her foot. There's nothing visibly.
02:29It looks great so I'm not sure exactly what the what is hurting.
02:36Oh PK. You make me very sad.
02:49I don't want anything to be wrong with you.
02:51This is why I chastise myself. Why would you get
03:04nine potential pets that you're gonna love just to watch them get hurt and eventually die?
03:15I think sometimes I just think I'm a complete moron. This is why you know farmers don't get
03:20attached to their animals. They're just animals. But you're not just an animal. PK, no. You're my PK.
03:28You're my poor poor chick.
03:34And I'm just gonna let her sit here. The thing is is that if I let the others in they will
03:41they'll pick on her or peck at her or try to figure out what's wrong with her.
03:44Geez. I'm thinking of just letting the chicks in here.
03:51They may or may not do anything. I don't know. But I can't leave the chicks out.
03:55And I don't know that I want to mix the hens in with her yet.
04:00Look how tired she is. This is exhausting. I feel so bad.
04:05These are the perils of letting them out, I guess. They run. They think they can run and jump and
04:16they really can't jump the way they used to.
04:22And what's funny is those two have been in there this whole time.
04:25They're like, what? I don't know if they know something's wrong.
04:31I assume that they sense something. But I don't know if they'd be like, hey are you okay PK? Or
04:37smack smack. Get you some smack down.
04:43So I brought this board in and I sat it down. And then I sat myself down. And she sat on my lap for
04:51probably a good 20 minutes. But she is definitely still limping a lot. And she tries to put her foot
04:59out to walk and instead she just lies down. I don't know. I don't know if that means
05:07the worst case scenario. Or if she literally just needs to lie around and let it heal.
05:14Do I just leave her in here with the young ones? Will they bug her? Will she try to fight them? Will she just
05:23lie there and ignore them? Or do I move her back in with these ladies? And if I do,
05:31will they ignore her or harass her? See, she's obviously hurting and tired from it because she's just
05:45closing her eyes even though these ladies are around her.
05:48I did kind of move her leg back and forth just to see if anything caused her to pull away.
06:02It didn't. But she did start panting and breathing heavier like,
06:08you're really starting to hurt me. Or I'm hurting or something.
06:12Um, I don't really know. I have to look it up. I don't know how chickens actually portray that they
06:21have pain. I don't really think they do unless it's like dramatic.
06:30Um, because you know, if they, if they let the rest of the flock know that they're injured,
06:36then somebody else in the flock might take that opportunity to knock them down the pecking order
06:44or hurt them or whatever. That's just how it works. So she might be in a lot of pain and I wouldn't know
06:53exactly.
06:56I put PK in the small coop in the hospital.
07:02And I've been watching her from the house and she's pacing back and forth.
07:08She's not sitting and resting the way she's supposed to be.
07:14But maybe with her pacing back and forth like that, um, maybe she's walking it off a little bit. I don't know.
07:23Okay. Let me take a look at you, PK.
07:34Okay. Okay. See, she's limping, but it's way better.
07:39Why are you eating the pine shavings?
07:41Okay. All right. So I wonder if she'll be able to perch tonight.
07:54Hey, PK, did you just sprain your leg, honey?
07:57It might be that tomorrow I need to put her in here.
08:03I did put that dog crate back in there and food and water.
08:08At least she's able to walk now.
08:10And maybe, you know, sitting for a while. She sat on my lap for a while.
08:20Um, she sat on the ground for a while, but she doesn't want to sit down anymore.
08:26She's just spending time in the little coop pacing. See how she's still limping quite a bit.
08:34Yeah. You're still limping a lot. She's just, maybe she's learning to manage it a little bit.
08:45Yeah. Look at that big lamp.
08:47So she has a little bit of zucchini with yogurt she's been eating.
08:53She has her wet feed. Well, it's not really wet, but, you know, eating that. She's drinking.
09:00So she's putting some weight on that left leg. Right now, I think she's just using it to balance.
09:11She's putting the majority of her weight on the right leg.
09:18And poor PK doesn't want to be over here by herself.
09:21I know you don't, but you can hardly walk.
09:33Yeah, I've seen you. You like hobble the whole time.
09:39I just checked her leg and her foot. There's nothing that's obvious.
09:46It doesn't bother her when I squeeze her foot or her leg.
09:53She doesn't really want me to pull it out, like to stretch it.
09:57But she also doesn't like yank it back like I would think she would do if it really hurt.
10:03So it could be that it primarily hurts because she has to put her weight on it.
10:16Because whenever she puts her weight on it, she like immediately hops over to the other foot.
10:21So PK is still hurt.
10:28I called the vet and they have the person who's on staff Mondays and Tuesdays for the emergency walk-in knows about chickens.
10:39So I'm like, okay, I'll just take her in.
10:41Because she's still limping a lot and I'm not, I just, I don't want to wait until I can't take her in to see someone who knows about chickens.
10:53Do you know what I mean? It's like, oh, I'll wait until, you know, Friday and then forget it.
10:59See how she's, see that?
11:00She's having a real hard time putting her weight on it.
11:05What are you doing, Trinity?
11:07So I've got Trinity here next to me for some reason.
11:10I have Phoenix over there and Ms. Cloud.
11:15And they're all hovering around PK.
11:21Because, you know, she's part of the family.
11:24I'm afraid PK, sleeping on the perch last night, made things worse.
11:33So she's in here right now on the ground, just lying down.
11:39And she's limping really bad.
11:41And when I look at her foot, now it looks like it might be swollen.
11:47So it could be that it is indeed her foot and not her leg.
11:51So I am going to take her to the vet this morning.
11:56I could tell that PK was in her nesting box because there was a circle where she had tried to,
12:02you know, nest down, but no egg.
12:06So now I have her in that crate and it's closed.
12:10And she's going around circles like she wants to lay an egg.
12:13And I'm hoping she'll lay an egg before we go to the vet.
12:16Because I don't want to get her in the car, take her to the vet, and cause her to not lay an egg.
12:23Because she's so stressed out.
12:25Okay, she might finally be settled enough.
12:40She found the fake egg and put it underneath her.
12:44It looks like she's now going to just sit.
12:46So I'm going to give this like 15 minutes and come back and check on her.
13:01Good job, PK.
13:03I'm really glad I waited.
13:05All right, we're in the car and we are heading to the vet.
13:09Here we are waiting for the doctor.
13:15I kind of wonder if she's going to lose some of her feathers.
13:19That's what happened with Spitfire.
13:21She was in here and so stressed out that her feathers just fell out.
13:24Of course, she was already sick.
13:27PK is hopefully not sick and just injured.
13:31And hopefully they can at least tell me what the injury is and what to do.
13:36I know I could have just waited, but the whole perching thing seems to have caused some stress.
13:44So I just want to make sure she doesn't have something dislocated.
13:49As you can see, she's putting most of her weight on her right leg,
13:53which is why she's kind of standing crooked.
14:04God knows who's kind of shouting.
14:22It's not my phone.
14:24He deserves a fellow.
14:25It's a daily life.
14:27Even if you do not move further,
14:30even if you're missing,
14:33I don't really know why they put us in this room.
14:43It's been 30 minutes now, and no one has come in to say anything to me.
14:52So I took her out of there.
14:54I could have just left her in.
14:56I had her calm in a lap.
14:59Now she's down on the floor like, can we leave?
15:02Well, I'm done.
15:04I went up to the counter, and I said,
15:06so do you know when someone's going to poke their head in and talk to me?
15:12I'm like, no one's come in yet?
15:13I'm like, no, it's been 30 minutes.
15:14No one has said anything.
15:15So they sent someone in, and it was the person who already examined her.
15:22I'm like, why didn't you guys just?
15:25Yeah, whatever.
15:26Anyway.
15:26It's like I'd totally go if I didn't have a chicken in the car.
15:34So this is the part where I am not knowledgeable enough.
15:38When I was feeling PK's leg and ankle and talons, I didn't notice PK respond differently.
15:50Or I couldn't tell.
15:51Okay, does this hurt her more than this?
15:53And she, the lady there said that when she messed around with her ankle, that's when PK would kind of flinch or she limped more.
16:07So what she has is a sprained ankle.
16:13And so she's prescribing two weeks of rest, which means two weeks in her own area.
16:22Which, I don't know how closely I'm going to follow that because I have the new, you know, five new chicks blending in with the four hens.
16:34She also prescribed some medication.
16:38But if I give it to her, I have to discard her eggs for 90 days.
16:45I don't, I don't mind not eating her eggs.
16:49The problem is, is that I won't be able to tell which egg is hers.
16:56I'll be able to tell the difference between hers and Miss Cloud or Phoenix, but I won't be able to tell the difference between her and Trinity.
17:07And they're, of course, like, well, you can keep her separated from the other ones.
17:11I'm like, no.
17:13I'm not going to keep her separated from the other chickens for 90 days.
17:18Are you kidding me?
17:19She wouldn't be a part of the flock anymore.
17:23And the chicks should start laying eggs in, like, five weeks.
17:29So I'm supposed to throw away PKs for 12 weeks.
17:35I won't be able to tell the difference between hers and the chicks, you know.
17:41So I went ahead and paid for the exam, but I did not get the medication.
17:46They did say, if I want, all I got to do is swing in there and say, hey, I changed my mind.
17:52But I'm like, there's got to be another medication out there that could help a chicken with inflammation and not harm a person when they eat the egg.
18:06So I asked her, I said, so this is the tech.
18:10I said, so what happens if somebody eats the eggs?
18:13How does it hurt people?
18:14She's like, well, I just know that it actually hurts them and they don't recommend it.
18:18And she goes, I could find out for you if you want.
18:22I'm like, that'd be great.
18:25Because what you just said to me is less than helpful.
18:29Don't eat their eggs because someone somewhere said it might hurt you.
18:33I'm like, how does it hurt you?
18:35And it's actually harmful to a person's kidneys.
18:38Now you've given me an actual answer rather than just don't do it, right?
18:46Because that makes me want to do it.
18:48Yeah.
18:51If you're giving the chicken a medication to help them with inflammation and pain,
19:00but then that medication is transferred into their eggs,
19:04that can actually harm humans if they eat the eggs,
19:10couldn't that be harmful to the chicken?
19:13Well, she says that I can feed the eggs back to the chickens if I want to.
19:19So that implies that whatever is in it doesn't hurt the chicken.
19:24And I understand that there's medication that is specific to animals and not to people.
19:30And that that medication should never be taken by a human.
19:35Okay, so I understand.
19:37So maybe that's the answer, right?
19:41But it still makes me question medication in general.
19:45Because, you know, we're told to take this or take that.
19:52And yet you see all those disclaimers.
19:54You know, this medication that will help you with your headaches could, you know,
19:59cause, you know, foot cancer or some crap like that.
20:02Why would I take it?
20:06Why do I want to take a medication that's actually going to be harmful to some other part of my body
20:15or some other function of my body?
20:19So it makes me question, do I want to give this medication to my chicken?
20:22Is it going to be more harmful than helpful?
20:29Or is it irrelevant?
20:32But anyway, I won't know unless I go ahead and go buy it, right?
20:37I just looked at myself in the camera.
20:39I look way better heading west than heading east.
20:43So that's an interesting thing, huh?
20:45PK here is drinking her water.
20:47She's already been eating.
20:50She laid an egg this morning.
20:51So she's healthy.
20:52She just has a sprained ankle.
20:56So I'll keep her separated.
20:58But then during the day when I let the hens out, I might let her out with them.
21:06How do you feel, PK?
21:11You're not limping quite as much.
21:14Want to come out with me?
21:15Careful, careful, careful.
21:16Careful.
21:17Oh, look, you're not limping as much, of course, because I spent $106.
21:20She was walking towards the other coop, and the sun found her.
21:29So I'll be interested to see how she gets up, since she's, of course, laying on her left leg, which is the injured leg.
21:38She'll probably hobble up, and I know she wants to go to the other coop.
21:46She wants to be with the other chickens, but I think she needs at least another day by herself in the little coop.
21:55Hello, PK, how are you?
22:00Injured, how are you?
22:03I'm not injured.
22:05Thanks for asking.
22:06Just some more BS to share between friends.
22:16Are you feeling good enough to go be with the others yet?
22:23Yeah, she's loving this.
22:24Oh, I know you're not starving.
22:35Oh, I take my finger to eat.
22:38There's no way that you are starving.
22:42It's just not a thing.
22:46I have to give this to the others, because there's no way you're eating this entire bowl.
22:50I mean, you can pretend that you can, but you can't.
22:55Let's see.
22:56Let's watch her walking.
23:01A little limpy.
23:04She could be with the others if she's just limpy, but not, like, sitting down every four steps.
23:11Then that's a problem.
23:15Are you done yet?
23:16Oh, goodness.
23:17Wow, you're going to have some kale processing to do.
23:27Are you going to leave any left for the others?
23:30I mean, this wasn't just for, it wasn't just for you.
23:37Thanks for your help.
23:40Well, yes, you're still limping, but it's definitely better.
23:44I'm trying to look.
23:47No, see, I can't, I don't see that the left foot is more swollen than the other.
23:52They look the same to me.
23:54That doesn't mean that they're not both swollen.
23:58All right, I'm going to.
24:00She goes, I want to go home.
24:02I want to be with my friends.
24:03I want to go home.
24:03I want to be with my friends.
24:17I want to go home.
24:18I want to go home.
24:32I want to be with my friends.
24:32I want to be with my friends.
24:34I want to go home.
