00:00:08The pressure on Juan Ma Lopez later tonight is immense.
00:00:12On this tiny, boxing-crazy island, legendary champions like Trinidad, Gomez, Ortiz, Benitez, and Cotto
00:00:20will forever live as boxing gods.
00:00:24Before losing to Salido, Lopez was on the verge of joining the all-time elite.
00:00:28Now, he fights to re-establish his reputation.
00:00:35Be sure that both Juan Ma and Salido understand the consequences of their first fight, and the significance of this rematch.
00:00:49I knew this was big. I knew he was considered the best in the division, and is very well-respected.
00:00:54And here I come. No one expected me to win.
00:00:59It was my first professional loss. I felt very sad and depressed.
00:01:02All my future plans were in jeopardy. I know I have to get back to winning.
00:01:08I was not focused for that first fight. I had personal problems.
00:01:12I was going through a divorce, and my weight kept going up. I didn't feel like myself.
00:01:19People don't give me credit. If he wasn't prepared, that's his mistake.
00:01:23I faced some of the best fighters in the world. He should have known Orlando Salido.
00:01:29I had to keep the pressure on him. The fight was close, but once he went down in the 5th round, I knew the victory would be mine.
00:01:36Left hook, right hand! The champion! He's down!
00:01:40I knew I needed to keep my distance, but I just couldn't do it.
00:01:45In the 8th round, I was hurting him with every punch I threw.
00:01:49Lopez in trouble! Salido can finish him here! Orlando Salido! That's it!
00:01:56What a fight!
00:02:00For me, this rematch is the most important fight of my life. My future depends on it. I must win it.
00:02:08I tasted the honey of fame. I don't want to lose my championship status. This is going to be a war.
00:02:15Orlando Salido is a two-time World Featherweight Titleist who took the WBO belt from Lopez in a decisive win last April in PR.
00:02:31Salido's 5th round knockdown of Lopez remains fresh in the minds of these Puerto Rican fans who hope for a different outcome this evening.
00:02:40Knockdowns with the subject of our Facebook poll and the results are in.
00:02:46We asked you, how many knockdowns do you predict in tonight's Salido-Lopez rematch?
00:02:51Al, very interesting numbers.
00:02:55I would have voted for exactly what the fans voted for. What about you, Antonio?
00:02:59They said two knockdowns. I would have said two each, so four in all.
00:03:03You like those knockdowns.
00:03:06So there are a number of Hall of Fame fighters and luminaries in attendance tonight.
00:03:14Ivan Calderon, one of the best smaller weight fighters of all time. A consummate boxer from here in Puerto Rico.
00:03:23Who also had matches with great Mexican fighters. Jorge Arce, who is the WBO Bantamweight Champion.
00:03:30You've seen him here on Showtime. He is a spectacularly exciting fighter.
00:03:34He was in one of the fight of years last year against a Puerto Rican, Fedor Vasquez Jr.
00:03:39The man who many people believe beat Manny Pacquiao in their last fight.
00:03:44It was the third of their exciting fights. Juan Manuel Marquez, one of the great fighters in Mexican history.
00:03:52And did I say one of the great fighters? There's another one.
00:03:56Of course, a multiple-time champion and doing commentary for the network in Mexico.
00:04:03And here's the guy who's been involved in some of the greatest fights in Puerto Rican history.
00:04:09He is well-beloved here on this island. The former welterweight champ, Felix Tito Trinidad.
00:04:15He looks like he's still in shape and can get in there, even though he's got a little gray in his beard.
00:04:20Tito Trinidad.
00:04:22All right, we're ready for our main event.
00:04:24Which will it be, folks? Revenge or repeat? No longer unbeaten, and now the challenger.
00:04:29Juan Manuel Lopez fights for pride and country.
00:04:33No longer overlooked, and now the champion, Orlando Salido, fights to solidify his status.
00:04:43Gus Johnson here, ringside NPR, alongside Antonio Tarver and Al Bernstein.
00:04:49And Al, for Juanma, what will be the difference in tonight's fight?
00:04:53Well, he hopes what will be the difference is that he will be able to box as a disciplined boxer
00:04:59and be intelligent over maybe the course of 12 full rounds.
00:05:02But I have to say, if he does that, Gus, it will be the first time he's ever done it in his career.
00:05:08He did go 12 rounds once before, but that was in a war against Rodgers Matagua.
00:05:12He is a fighter that has to change his personality.
00:05:15And can he do it and can he be disciplined in front of this excited crowd
00:05:19that will be urging him to be a warrior?
00:05:21Antonio, this time, Salido comes into this fight as the champion, not the challenger.
00:05:26But he still feels like Rodney Dangerfield because they just won't give him any respect.
00:05:31He has to do what he did the first time again before people can truly feel
00:05:36that he deserves to be featherweight champion.
00:05:38They feel that if all goes well with Lopez and he gets rid of all of his problems,
00:05:44it's business as usual.
00:05:45They're not taking this guy serious.
00:05:47I think they're overlooking him once again.
00:05:49All right, this crowd is really riveted, fired up, and ready to watch the rematch.
00:05:57Salido taking on Lopez, and the rivalry continues between Puerto Rico and Mexico.
00:06:07You look at some of these great fighters, and Antonio, where I was talking about,
00:06:10where Fredo Gomez, who fought everybody and had great fights with the great Mexican champions,
00:06:16this one will certainly go down in history as one of those.
00:06:19My favorite on that list is Salvador Sanchez.
00:06:21Even though he did not get a chance to fight all of the Puerto Rican fighters,
00:06:26but I think he would have had many more on that list.
00:06:32Packed house here in San Juan.
00:06:38Ready to watch their hometown hero face a Mexican warrior.
00:06:48This time, Juan Manuel Lopez will come into the ring first.
00:06:53The last time he came into the ring, he came in with pyrotechnics.
00:06:58It will be interesting to see how he enters this time.
00:07:13Juan Manuel Lopez, no pyrotechnics, fireworks, and outrageous outfits.
00:07:20He comes in a man determined, a man focused, and a man seeking redemption.
00:07:27You know, he is 9-1 in title matches.
00:07:30The only time he ever failed, obviously, was against Orlando Salido,
00:07:34and that's the only time he failed as a professional.
00:07:37Here's a man walking into this kind of excitement and crowd,
00:07:41and he's got to turn that motor down once the fight starts.
00:07:44There's a lot of energy here.
00:07:46You're absolutely right, Al, but at the fighters' meeting, he was not the same Lopez.
00:07:49He was more stoic, he was more serious,
00:07:52and it's going to take a very serious Lopez to get the job done tonight.
00:08:22What's going through the mind right now of Juan Manuel Lopez?
00:08:33He comes in, in front of his home fans, trying to regain his belt.
00:08:41This entire island has been afire in the last few days,
00:08:45and the outpouring of this emotion now is a part of that,
00:08:49but again, he has to sink this in, but use this energy in the right way.
00:08:53You know what, Al? Even though he heard all the cheers, he knows all of his loved ones here,
00:08:57he should block it all out.
00:08:59He has to have a ton of vision tonight, and he's going to have to have a great case of amnesia,
00:09:04because he's going to have to forget about the first time he met Salido.
00:09:13Felix Trinidad, a good friend of Juan Manuel Lopez.
00:09:16We know what his prediction is, apparently he just gave it to us.
00:09:44The champion, Orlando Salido.
00:09:48The last time we saw him here, it was the greatest moment of his boxing career,
00:09:54as he stopped Juan Manuel Lopez and took away his title in his hometown.
00:10:01Ironically, he revisits the spot of his greatest achievement,
00:10:06defending his belt on foreign soil.
00:10:12Why would he agree to this kind of situation, these kind of conditions, when he's the champion?
00:10:19You know, he didn't have a second stout about coming here to fight this fight.
00:10:24He told us, it's a business decision, he said, I don't care where I fight,
00:10:29he is the road warrior, a little bit like your old pal, Glenn Johnson, who goes everywhere.
00:10:34And you know what, Al, that's true, but guess what?
00:10:36He's proven that he can do it once, so all the pressure's on Lopez.
00:10:40Why not? I beat you here before, I'll come back to your hometown,
00:10:44the scene of the crime, the last time, and do it again.
00:10:47That's a true fighter and a true warrior.
00:10:50You know, we have to remember that this man, we talk about him maybe not getting a decision,
00:10:54but remember, when he stopped Lopez the last time, that was controversial.
00:10:59A Puerto Rican referee who did stop the fight on his behalf,
00:11:03so while he's walking into a lion's den, it's not a place where he necessarily will get a raw deal.
00:11:09And that brings us to the tail of the tape.
00:11:12Lopez Salido II, here in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
00:11:17As you look at these numbers, obviously some of them are very similar.
00:11:22The one that I think is important, and maybe for different reasons, is the age.
00:11:26Salido is 31, he's been a pro since he was 15 years of age.
00:11:30Now you would think that means he's more shop-worn than Juan Manuel Lopez.
00:11:34Not necessarily so. Lopez has been in many wars as well, and taken a lot of punishment as well.
00:11:43Alright, we are ready for action here in San Juan.
00:11:48Great crowd in attendance.

00:15:29y un sin concurso con 25 ganadas por la vÃa del knockout.
00:15:36From Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Mexico.
00:15:40And tonight making the second appearance in this title,
00:15:43here is the two-time world champion.
00:15:46Aquà está, el campeón mundial dos veces.
00:15:50Introducing the defending WBO featherweight champion of the world,
00:15:55Orlando Ciri Salido.
00:16:06And once again, our referee in charge of the action, Roberto Ramirez Sr.
00:16:26We're ready for our main event.
00:16:30Puerto Rico, Juan Manuel López,
00:16:33no longer faced with distractions outside of the ring,
00:16:37but can he figure out a way at home once again
00:16:42to beat the only man to break his will,
00:16:46Orlando Salido took that championship last April,
00:16:50and he has no problems coming back into PR
00:16:55to defend it in front of his wife, Mayra,
00:16:59pregnant with their third child.
00:17:03This could be a special one, folks, round number one.
00:17:11If you had to give one bullet headline about this fight,
00:17:15in my opinion, it all boils down to whether the overhand right
00:17:19of Orlando Salido is going to continue to land
00:17:22and whether López can stop it.
00:17:24If he can't stop it, he will not win.
00:17:27And according to López, he wants to box a little bit more,
00:17:31take his time and use his skills.
00:17:34And this is to his advantage because he has ability to do that,
00:17:38and there's no real reason why he shouldn't,
00:17:41especially if it's going to spell victory tonight for him.
00:17:44But according to Salido, regardless of what López's early plans are,
00:17:49he knows that he's going to resort back to his old habits.
00:17:53Well, the reason Orlando Salido believes that is because he always has
00:17:57in every single fight.
00:17:59And the question is, can he, as he said, be intelligent enough to box?
00:18:03And will Salido give him a chance to fight at that pace?
00:18:07We'll see.
00:18:08Early on here, Salido, of course, pushing forward.
00:18:15First round scheduled for 12 for the WBO featherweight championship.
00:18:21The champion, Orlando Salido, in the silver and blue.
00:18:25The challenger and former champion, Juan Manuel López,
00:18:30in the purple and silver.
00:18:32There's Salido throwing that right hand again.
00:18:34In each of their last fights,
00:18:36Wang Hane knocked down Orlando Salido twice.
00:18:40The first was a left hook so unbelievable,
00:18:43I can't believe Salido got up from it.
00:18:46And for López in his last fight,
00:18:49he beat Mike Oliver, but was outlanded 39-27
00:18:54in just the two rounds he fought against Oliver
00:18:57in terms of power punches.
00:18:59And so, you know, his defense didn't improve in the last fight either.
00:19:13López, very light on his feet here in this first round.
00:19:16Very relaxed, keeping his guard up high.
00:19:20Salido just got in a nice short left hook.
00:19:23And the one thing I noticed when watching tapes of López,
00:19:27when the opponent gets close, he stands straight up.
00:19:30This is a Achilles heel for him,
00:19:32because every time an opponent comes close,
00:19:34he's supposed to get in a shell.
00:19:36He stands straight up with his chin high,
00:19:38and it's very dangerous.
00:19:39It makes him accessible to those big right hands.
00:19:4420 seconds remaining in the first.
00:19:55Salido has been the aggressor.
00:19:58He's the bull in the first round.
00:20:01López de Matador.
00:20:03Nice right hook and pivot by Juan Manuel López.
00:20:08We talk about the right of Salido,
00:20:10but there was a very good left hook.
00:20:12Look, he wanted to unload with the right.
00:20:14Instead, he landed a really good left hook.
00:20:17And López wobbled just a moment or two.
00:20:19Let's take a look at the keys to victory for Salido.
00:20:23He certainly wants to keep as frenetic a pace as he can in this fight
00:20:27and pressure him.
00:20:28And as he comes forward, he's got to move his head well.
00:20:30He did that in the first round.
00:20:31The overhand right is the ticket in this fight.
00:20:34That was his big weapon in the last fight.
00:20:36For Juan Manuel López, if he is to box,
00:20:39the jab is essential to López.
00:20:41In his last ten fights, he's only landed four jabs per round.
00:20:45Got to do better than that tonight.
00:20:46He's got to avoid the overhand right.
00:20:48That's his Achilles heel.
00:20:49And his power is in his right hook.
00:20:52But I think the left is the punch that López can land against Salido.
00:21:01Juan Manuel López's family here,
00:21:04his children along with his ex-wife.
00:21:10¡Vamos! ¡Vamos!
00:21:12Barbara, his ex-wife, showing support for the former champion
00:21:17and father of her children.
00:21:19He said, you know, one of the things, she was always cooking for him
00:21:23during the preparations of fights.
00:21:25And that didn't happen, obviously, for the last one.
00:21:27But it's good on many levels to see that the family is reconciled in that way.
00:21:32Here comes Salido, bombing with those right hands again.
00:21:36And I know that first round was a fill-out round.
00:21:38But I noticed, it seemed to me, that López seemed to be a little gunshot.
00:21:42Yep, I agree.
00:21:43It seemed like he's not throwing those punches with authority.
00:21:45It's like he's going through the motions.
00:21:47And now Salido trying to jump on López.
00:21:49Ooh, a hard right hand by Salido.
00:21:52Backs up Juanma.
00:21:54Not only did it back him up, it buckled him.
00:21:56That punch got through and it hurt López.
00:22:02Juan Manuel López is trying to do something very difficult tonight.
00:22:05Change his fighting identity at the most important moment of his career.
00:22:09And it's hard.
00:22:12Salido feeling that he will resort back to his boxing identity.
00:22:16A left hook by Salido.
00:22:18López in the corner now.
00:22:25Salido closing in.
00:22:31López, a little wobbly.
00:22:35In the ring, trying to stay on his toes.
00:22:45Now López with a nice combination.
00:22:48And the fans get behind him.
00:22:50Juan Manuel López is pushing his punches.
00:22:53He is not throwing them with authority.
00:22:55There was another nice little left uppercut by Salido.
00:23:05Salido has had steady pressure in this fight.
00:23:08It hasn't been a frenetic pace, but it's been a lot of pressure from Salido.
00:23:12Nice counterpunching, though, by López.
00:23:14López, a little wobbly.
00:23:16In the ring, trying to stay on his toes.
00:23:18Juan Manuel López is pushing his punches.
00:23:20He is not throwing them with authority.
00:23:22There was another nice little left uppercut by Salido.
00:23:25There was another nice little left uppercut by López.
00:23:28López, a little wobbly.
00:23:30In the ring, trying to stay on his toes.
00:23:33Nice counterpunching, though, by López.
00:23:37I think what will help López right now
00:23:39is if he can dig some of those good body shots downstairs
00:23:42as this man is coming close to him.
00:23:44But again, he stands straight up.
00:23:46Oh, a nice left hook by Orlando Salido.
00:23:49Backs López up again.
00:23:53López, you just don't see the confidence.
00:23:55You don't see the fire and intensity in his work.
00:23:59Here in the second round, you see a timidness almost.
00:24:03Right hand, Salido gets through.
00:24:05López will have to come out of his shell,
00:24:08and maybe that was it.
00:24:19Orlando Salido, as we mentioned, has had steady pressure.
00:24:23But one of the most important things,
00:24:26we talked about moving his head.
00:24:28He has fought a very good fight defensively,
00:24:30made López miss punches,
00:24:32and then come to both the body and the head.
00:24:35So this will start with defense,
00:24:37and then we will see the Salido offense.
00:24:40He's working the body, and there's the clubbing right hand
00:24:43that we saw so many times in their last fight.
00:24:46Toward the end of the round, López was more active,
00:24:50throwing punches, did land the one good straight left,
00:24:53but for the most part, was not that sharp in that round.
00:24:56It was outlanded in power punches, 18 to 8 by Salido.
00:25:02Nothing happened.
00:25:05Don't get desperate, and keep your hands up.
00:25:08Make sure you're covering yourself.
00:25:15The third round, scheduled for 12,
00:25:17for the WBO featherweight championship of the world,
00:25:21Orlando Salido is the champion from Mexico,
00:25:25taking on the challenger, Juan Manuel López,
00:25:28from here in Puerto Rico, the former champion.
00:25:31And in the first two rounds, Salido has been the aggressor.
00:25:35We haven't seen Juanma the way we are accustomed to see him fight,
00:25:41but you get a feeling it's about to come out.
00:25:44He's got to do what he's got to do.
00:25:46Very big moment there, though.
00:25:48López landed a counter right hook.
00:25:50They told Salido, don't be desperate, don't be wild in there and your pressure.
00:25:54He was a little wild, and he took a big right hook from López,
00:25:57and that's the power punch for López.
00:26:04Let's take a look at the power punches from the last round.
00:26:08Salido, 18 to 40, 45 percent.
00:26:11López, 8 to 41, 20 percent.
00:26:15Nice straight right hand sends López back to the ropes.
00:26:19And even though Salido hasn't really landed that big knockout punch,
00:26:22it's these punches that are getting through,
00:26:24and it doesn't seem like López is taking them very well.
00:26:27I mean, he's being hurt by these shots.
00:26:31Where's the Juan Manuel López we are accustomed to see?
00:26:35The one that has no problems taking risks but throwing punches.
00:26:41Well, he's trying to fight a more tactical fight,
00:26:43and there he took another right hand from Salido.
00:26:46He's actually trying to do what he's supposed to do,
00:26:48but he's just not that man.
00:26:50This is not the kind of fight he can fight.
00:26:52He's going to have to get in the trenches at some point probably.
00:26:55Another right hand by Salido.
00:26:57I mean, coming into this fight,
00:26:59I felt that if López can avoid getting hit by these big shots,
00:27:03he might have a chance to win this fight,
00:27:05but he's not avoiding those big shots.
00:27:07Now, mind you, and he was frozen there by those shots by Salido.
00:27:13And Salido's actually fighting very intelligently now.
00:27:21Now he's not as wild as he was in his attacking.
00:27:24He doesn't need to be.
00:27:25Switching to lefty, which is interesting.
00:27:27And there's the right hand by Salido,
00:27:29followed by a straight right hand.
00:27:31Uppercut gets through.
00:27:33Wama may be hurt.
00:27:35Wama not answering back.
00:27:38Salido trying to bring Wama out of his shell.
00:27:41Fight me like you know how to.
00:27:43I dare you.
00:27:45I'm in your house.
00:27:47I took the championship from you here.
00:27:5318 seconds to go in the third.
00:27:55When will we see Juan Manuel López?
00:27:58This isn't the man we're accustomed to seeing.
00:28:01We're looking at him now, Gus, but he's not the same fighter.
00:28:04We're looking at him now, Gus, but he's not the same fighter.
00:28:06I mean, with these wars he's been in,
00:28:10he's not taking his punches good.
00:28:12But he's going to fight because he's a champion that he is.
00:28:15He's going to fight.
00:28:26That's a jab to head first.
00:28:29You have to hit him first.
00:28:32That's it. Nice and forced.
00:28:35That's how you have to counter.
00:28:45Early on in the round,
00:28:47he would get a warning with Orlando Salido
00:28:50for this punch that was done on the belt line.
00:28:53The next one hit the belt line
00:28:55and he got a warning from Roberto Ramirez Sr.
00:29:00for hitting low, although I don't know if those were low blows.
00:29:03But here is a punch that we're not accustomed to seeing.
00:29:06A left uppercut from the outside by Salido as he was a lefty.
00:29:09So he's showing, on top of everything else,
00:29:12as if Juan Manuel López doesn't have enough trouble,
00:29:14Salido is showing him new wrinkles in this fight.
00:29:17He's actually showing him some new looks
00:29:19that he didn't see in the first fight, which is remarkable.
00:29:23We begin the fourth round scheduled for 12
00:29:27for the WBO featherweight championship.
00:29:29126 pounds, Orlando Salido the champion
00:29:32in silver and blue,
00:29:34Juan Manuel López the challenger in purple.
00:29:37And this fight dominated so far
00:29:40by the aggressive Orlando Salido.
00:29:43López
00:29:46trying to figure this tough warrior out
00:29:50as Salido is almost begging him to engage.
00:29:57Orlando Salido is fighting a spectacular fight.
00:30:00Not only is he doing the things we expected him to do,
00:30:02but we mentioned before he switched to lefty.
00:30:04He's using his left hand much more than he did in the first fight.
00:30:08And honestly, has actually fought better in this fight
00:30:11than he did in the first fight.
00:30:12Yes, he did, because he's avoiding those big shots by López.
00:30:16And in the fighter meeting,
00:30:17here's the guy that you can tell was not satisfied.
00:30:20He was hungry.
00:30:21He lost his title before in his first defense.
00:30:24And he knows what it feels like to lose a championship.
00:30:27He's fighting to hold on to everything he has right now tonight.
00:30:31As we take a look at power punches in the last round,
00:30:33Salido 29 of 63, 46%.
00:30:37López only 6 of 22.
00:30:39And right now, Orlando Salido looks like the bully.
00:30:45And we have to remind you that one right hook from López,
00:30:48if he gets leverage on it, could change this fight.
00:30:50But it just doesn't look like that punch is getting there.
00:30:53López is still a big puncher.
00:30:55Oh, an elbow from López.
00:30:57A little desperation.
00:31:06The big headline of this fight is how well Salido has used his left hand.
00:31:10It's added another dimension that López is giving López huge trouble.
00:31:18Where is Juanma?
00:31:20We're waiting to see him.
00:31:22He's in there somewhere. Nice!
00:31:25The left hook by Juan Manuel López.
00:31:29Followed by a right hook by Juan.
00:31:31Followed by a straight left hand.
00:31:33He's finding a little rhythm.
00:31:35And he's gaining his confidence against the only man that's ever beaten him.
00:31:40He's got the crowd behind him.
00:31:43López, stiff jab.
00:31:4534 seconds to go.
00:31:48López, he's got him bouncing his step now here in the fourth.
00:31:52It's been his best round.
00:31:57He's still been outlandish so far in this round,
00:32:00but he has come back and made a round of it.
00:32:04He's got to find that one punch that's going to turn it around.
00:32:08And we know Salido is a hard man.
00:32:10I mean, he can take a punch.
00:32:12Swelling under the left eye of Salido,
00:32:14so he's been with a couple right hands there.
00:32:33Not for the faint of heart inside that ring.
00:32:37Here is a punch that was low from Orlando Salido,
00:32:41even though he didn't get caution for it.
00:32:43And he wasn't the only one that bent the rules in the last round.
00:32:48Here is López.
00:32:53Getting him here with an elbow.
00:32:55Whacked him on the side of the ear with that.
00:33:00And so it's getting rough in there.
00:33:02Where is this young man?
00:33:0428 years old.
00:33:07Antonio, when you've lost,
00:33:10what goes through your mind when you face the same man
00:33:14that handed you the first loss of your entire career?
00:33:17Yeah, you know, he has a lot of doubts going through his head right now.
00:33:20But you know, he has a big heart.
00:33:22He has all his loved ones, his fans here.
00:33:24And he has all the motivation to turn this fight around.
00:33:28But again, he has to find it within himself.
00:33:31It's scary to go back in there with a guy that knocked you out.
00:33:35Now, I think in that last round,
00:33:37he landed his most significant punches.
00:33:39And I thought there were some power punches
00:33:41that got the attention of Orlando Salido.
00:33:43So we'll see if that can continue,
00:33:45even though I still think Salido probably won that round.
00:33:48This fight is scheduled for 12 rounds
00:33:50for the WBO featherweight championship.
00:33:52Orlando Salido, the champion in silver,
00:33:55taking on Juan Manuel López,
00:33:57the man he took the title from in purple.
00:34:00He took it from him in Puerto Rico.
00:34:02And he's here to defend it once again.
00:34:06One positive thing we can say for López,
00:34:08he landed only 19% of his punches in the last fight.
00:34:11He's landing 39% in this fight.
00:34:14He's still down to Salido,
00:34:16but he is landing it slightly at a better rate.
00:34:19And he's still coming forward with that chin high.
00:34:22That's dangerous for any fighter because, man,
00:34:24Salido throws these overhand, looping overhand shots
00:34:27that you don't see, and you run right into it
00:34:30when you have your chin high like López.
00:34:34Salido coming straight ahead.
00:34:36López not using any angles to turn him and throw shots.
00:34:42It's there.
00:34:44Also, Salido bending over the uppercut,
00:34:48a possibility as well for Juan Manuel López
00:34:51if he can find himself in this fight.
00:34:53Nice looping right hand by Orlando Salido.
00:35:04López is, at the best I can say,
00:35:07and I don't want this to sound inappropriate,
00:35:10Juan Manuel López is doing the best impression he can
00:35:13of a boxer-puncher.
00:35:15And he's having some success at it, just not enough.
00:35:18And remember, he's not been that before.
00:35:23I don't think he's tricking.
00:35:25He's not showing any traps.
00:35:27He's not setting any traps for Salido.
00:35:30He needs to be setting traps where this guy
00:35:32can run into it so he can land those leverage,
00:35:34have leverage on his punches.
00:35:36Yeah, I agree.
00:35:37And he's done it on occasion, but not nearly enough.
00:35:40Oh, big right again by Salido.
00:35:41And the body work of Salido, very impressive.
00:35:48Ooh, he barely missed the left hook.
00:35:50Wow.
00:35:51Don't you feel like there's something big coming?
00:35:54Yes, you do.
00:35:56Oh, there it is, a left hook by Salido.
00:35:59López smiles.
00:36:01That means he's hurt.
00:36:04Salido moving in for the kill 18 seconds ago,
00:36:07and he slips.
00:36:08That was a knockdown.
00:36:09That may be called a knockdown.
00:36:11That was from a punch.
00:36:12And he's hurt.
00:36:13That was from a punch.
00:36:14Yes, a right hook.
00:36:18Wow.
00:36:20Here comes Guadalajara, and Salido hurt.
00:36:23And that's the end of the round.
00:36:26That's the end of the round.
00:36:28Yeah, Guadalajara now starting to get his machismo back.
00:36:33It's been good.
00:36:36And that gets this crowd on their feet.
00:36:46Salido apparently walked into a right hook.
00:36:51He had López in all kinds of trouble.
00:36:53He was winning the round dramatically.
00:36:55Walked into a perfect right hook.
00:36:58Much like the punch, except there was a left.
00:37:00And Wang He landed against Salido.
00:37:02To get up from that is staggering.
00:37:05And you know what?
00:37:06He almost didn't get up from it.
00:37:07And you know what?
00:37:09Juanma did not throw that punch hard.
00:37:11It was just a punch that he delivered.
00:37:13And he caught him with that punch.
00:37:15He did not see.
00:37:16That was a trap that I was speaking of earlier.
00:37:19All the time, you don't have to put all your power on a punch.
00:37:21Just deliver it.
00:37:23Sonny Liston.
00:37:25Muhammad Ali.
00:37:26Lewis and Maid.
00:37:27Six inches.
00:37:28Six inches.
00:37:30Felix Trinidad likes it, that's for sure.
00:37:32And it shows you the toughness of Salido.
00:37:35Now we've got a fight.
00:37:36Six rounds, scheduled for 12.
00:37:38Juan Manuel López.
00:37:41The challenger in purple, Orlando Salido.
00:37:44The champion knocked down at the end of the fifth round.
00:37:48Now mind you, I made that a 10-9 round only for López.
00:37:53Because he was completely dominated the rest of the round.
00:37:56Now the judges may not.
00:37:58Another low blow by Salido.
00:38:00He's flirting with danger.
00:38:04The right hook at the end of the fifth.
00:38:06So quick by Juan Manuel López.
00:38:09And you know what?
00:38:10That's always been one of his best punches.
00:38:12That little sneaky right hook.
00:38:13As you're coming in, you don't see that punch.
00:38:16It comes from the blind side.
00:38:17Oh, big right hand by Salido.
00:38:19Backs up López.
00:38:20He takes it.
00:38:22Wow.
00:38:23This is turning into some fight, gentlemen.
00:38:26That might have been the worst thing López could have did.
00:38:30Two minutes to go in the sixth.
00:38:33You know, López took that right hand better that time than he had earlier.
00:38:48All right.
00:38:51Let's check in with Chuck Ziappa for the Showtime Unofficial Scorecard.
00:38:55Chuck.
00:38:57Yes, in the last round, Salido was winning the round.
00:39:00When he got dropped, it was considered a knockdown.
00:39:04I gave that round 10-9 for López.
00:39:09But I still have Salido winning 9-46.
00:39:141-16 to go in the sixth.
00:39:16Scheduled for 12 for the WBO featherweight championship of the world.
00:39:21Things starting to heat up now.
00:39:25In Puerto Rico, Orlando Salido, the champion in silver and blue.
00:39:30Juan Manuel López, the former champion and challenger in purple.
00:39:34We've had one knockdown in this fight.
00:39:36Salido going down at the end of the fifth.
00:39:41Right now, you see Juan Manuel López, he's boxing really well.
00:39:45He's not having been hit with anything big thus far since earlier in this round.
00:39:53Salido is taking a lot of—oh, big.
00:39:56Oh, wow, there's the right hook.
00:39:58He's standing straight up again against the ropes.
00:40:00Takes another right hand.
00:40:02A looping right hook. A left hook.
00:40:04And Manuel López fights off the ropes.
00:40:09Salido jumping on him.
00:40:11Straight right hand.
00:40:13That would have knocked out any normal man.
00:40:15You have to take your head off the López.
00:40:19He's a gritty fighter.
00:40:20Oh, gosh, and then some.
00:40:22He's taking some shots.
00:40:23Salido, now López delivers a straight left.
00:40:30And that's the end of the sixth.
00:40:32Wow.
00:40:38Listen to me.
00:40:40We're in the trenches now.
00:40:50You gotta battle back now.
00:40:57Orlando Salido, coming back from a knockdown in the previous round,
00:41:01just dominated this round against Juan Manuel López.
00:41:05Bullied him, landed body punches,
00:41:07and then mixing up the hooks and the right hands,
00:41:10more so even than in the first fight.
00:41:13And then there was more pressure.
00:41:15Landing hooks, overhand rights.
00:41:18There's the hook again from Salido.
00:41:20It's not his signature punch, but, man, it's a powerful punch,
00:41:23and the right hand gets in as well.
00:41:26He just controlled López and has landed 132 power punches
00:41:30to only 65 for López,
00:41:32so he is just controlling.
00:41:34Some swelling under the left eye of Orlando Salido
00:41:37as we head into the seventh round, scheduled for 12.
00:41:40126-pound fighters in the ring
00:41:43for the WBO featherweight championship of the world.
00:41:46Orlando Salido, the champion in silver and blue,
00:41:49knocked down in the fifth round by the challenger
00:41:52and former champion, Juan Manuel López,
00:41:55who had his title taken in his home country by this man.
00:42:01But he did score the big knockdown
00:42:03at the end of the fifth.
00:42:04Salido, though, it seemed like it's fired him up.
00:42:08Again, again, and I think this is a real telltale.
00:42:12He cannot continue to stand straight up.
00:42:14He has to get that chin low,
00:42:16especially when Salido is close to him.
00:42:18It's causing him to take so much unnecessary punishment.
00:42:22Left hook by Salido.
00:42:24López has spent a lot of time on the ropes
00:42:29in this fight.
00:42:30Defensive liabilities have been the one issue
00:42:34for Juan Manuel López in his career.
00:42:36He finished, the only fight he's finished in 12 rounds,
00:42:39he's gone 12.
00:42:40He's finished out on his feet practically.
00:42:42It's Rodgers Metago and one of the decision.
00:42:44He's been down several times in his career.
00:42:47Defense is his Achilles heel,
00:42:49and mostly the overhand right.
00:42:50But tonight, the left hook has been there as well.
00:42:55He continues to fight back,
00:42:57and as Antonio pointed out,
00:42:58let no one ever question the grit or heart
00:43:02or determination of Juan Manuel López,
00:43:04or Salido, for that matter,
00:43:06who got up from a monstrous short right hook.
00:43:10Orlando Salido, so rugged.
00:43:12Tough Mexican fighter.
00:43:15Great head movement.
00:43:17Left hook, right hand, left hook.
00:43:20Backs up López.
00:43:22Juan López, he's wobbling now.
00:43:26López is never out of the fight,
00:43:28but, man, is he taking a lot of punishment.
00:43:30Well said, Antonio.
00:43:31That's exactly true.
00:43:33Because you can always have another one
00:43:35of those right hooks land.
00:43:38Doesn't look like his feet is up on their side right now.
00:43:42Left hook.
00:43:44Another left hook by Salido.
00:43:48Right hand by Salido.
00:43:56Orlando Salido,
00:43:59he, from the very beginning,
00:44:02on López, 30 seconds to go.
00:44:05Juan Manuel fighting for his life right now.
00:44:18Come on, come on, come on, come on!
00:44:33Boom! Great action here, folks,
00:44:35at the end of the seventh.
00:44:39And a worried Tito Drinidad.
00:44:48Salido has gone to the body very effectively,
00:44:52and it's helped set up other punches.
00:44:54Sometimes he falls in and he gets countered,
00:44:56but not in this instance.
00:44:58The right hand to the body helps set up that left hook.
00:45:00Well, there's a right actually to the head.
00:45:02And then here comes the body punch.
00:45:04And then, switching to left hand,
00:45:06it momentarily lands the left hand.
00:45:10A lot of nuances to what Orlando Salido is doing.
00:45:13Really, and there again,
00:45:15the looping left hook that lands.
00:45:17He's falling in sometimes,
00:45:19but López not hitting him with the counter.
00:45:22It's hard to see those punches because he's ducking.
00:45:24They've watched a lot of film on López,
00:45:26and they know that this guy stands straight up
00:45:28when you're close to him.
00:45:30And those overhand rights, he just can't defend against.
00:45:33Honeymoon! Honeymoon!
00:45:44Round A scheduled for 12
00:45:46for the WBO featherweight championship of the world.
00:45:49Orlando Salido.
00:45:51Last three rounds really coming on
00:45:55against Juan Manuel López,
00:45:57the challenger in the purple.
00:45:59Salido is 31, has been fighting since he was 15 years of age,
00:46:03but does he look like a fighter who is shopworn?
00:46:07Not even in the least.
00:46:09He said to us, all of us at the fighter meeting,
00:46:11I feel like a young 31,
00:46:13I feel like this is the beginning of something big for me.
00:46:17And he's fighting that way.
00:46:21There's been one knockdown in this fight
00:46:23at the end of the fifth round.
00:46:25López with the sneaky right hook
00:46:30right on the chin of Salido,
00:46:33and the champion went down.
00:46:36As we take a look at the total power punching numbers,
00:46:39Salido, 164 of 391, 42%.
00:46:45And those Hillstats numbers there,
00:46:47as you see them continuing to update,
00:46:49you see the huge margin for Orlando Salido in this fight.
00:46:55They're throwing almost the same amount of punches,
00:46:57about 20 more for Salido,
00:46:59but he is landing at a better rate, Salido.
00:47:01Now he's backed up for the first time, Salido, in a while,
00:47:03but he is counter-punching off the ropes.
00:47:08Wow, this is some fight, it really is.
00:47:10Even though Salido is probably winning most of the rounds,
00:47:13we think, oh, hitting on the break by López.
00:47:18López making the decision now to get in close,
00:47:22and Salido ditches more than López were accustomed to see.
00:47:26He might have Salido on his heels a little,
00:47:28even though Salido's counter-punching off those ropes.
00:47:30Wow, what a war.
00:47:32Again, López is standing straight up,
00:47:35and he's susceptible for those big overhand rights from Salido.
00:47:39Look at the combination punching by Orlando Salido,
00:47:43now backing up.
00:47:45Four-punch combination.
00:47:47This is, this is, these are two men in there, guys.
00:47:50I mean, this is spectacular by,
00:47:53even though Salido's winning this fight,
00:47:55López is acquitting himself with dignity, valor, and toughness.
00:48:00Remember, López has 28 knockouts to his credit.
00:48:0431 and 1.
00:48:07Juan Ma, moving forward.
00:48:09Juan Ma.
00:48:11He took that shot like a man.
00:48:15Wow.
00:48:16That was a beautiful counter-left hook
00:48:18that Antonio's referring to by Salido.
00:48:22Salido has thrown 90 punches in this round and landed 35.
00:48:26And the one thing, one difference in this round
00:48:29is López has been the aggressor this entire round.
00:48:32He's backed Salido up.
00:48:34Even though he's losing the round, he's still been the aggressor.
00:48:37Will the 31 years of age make a difference
00:48:42for Orlando Salido as this fight goes on?
00:48:48This fight goes on.
00:48:54In this action here, both men on the inside
00:48:57and López kind of pushing down.
00:48:59Now, when the referee comes in,
00:49:01López, perhaps guilty of some hitting on the break,
00:49:05although that was marginal.
00:49:06I said it when it was live, but now looking at it on replay,
00:49:09I'm going to be a little less critical of López.
00:49:13And Orlando Salido, this combination punching,
00:49:17getting through the guard for the most part of López.
00:49:20And López landed a good counter-punch of his own.
00:49:22And there's the right hook of López.
00:49:29López was able to have his moments in that last round.
00:49:32He was outlanded by about 16 punches,
00:49:34but he did land some things.
00:49:35And you know what?
00:49:36The right hook is starting to emerge a little
00:49:38for López in this fight.
00:49:39And that's the punch he has always thrown close
00:49:43and always thrown short.
00:49:45That punch can be a surprise punch in this fight.
00:49:47And that's the one punch that could hurt Salido.
00:49:49And of course, it did knock him down earlier in this match.
00:49:529th round, scheduled for 12 for the WBO featherweight title.
00:49:56Juan Manuel López, the challenger in purple.
00:50:00Orlando Salido, the Mexican champion.
00:50:05In silver and blue.
00:50:07Excuse me. Salido's been 12 rounds.
00:50:09And he has won 3 and won 1, lost 3,
00:50:13and has a no decision in 12 rounds.
00:50:15The no decision was the fight in which he beat Robert Guerrero,
00:50:18but tested positive for a banned substance,
00:50:20so they changed it to a no decision.
00:50:22López had been 12 rounds once,
00:50:24but it was a very tough affair
00:50:27in which he barely ended up on his feet
00:50:29in winning a decision against Mataga.
00:50:31Now López going to the body.
00:50:33López with some clean shots.
00:50:37López.
00:50:40Nuts and guts, folks.
00:50:42I'll tell you what, Salido said
00:50:44that when it came down to it,
00:50:46he'll find López in the center of the ring
00:50:48going toe-to-toe, and he got what he asked for.
00:50:52Look at him. Beautiful.
00:50:54Boxing, folks. This is what we love.
00:51:01Swelling under both eyes of Orlando Salido.
00:51:06I don't think that's going to show him down at all.
00:51:09No, no.
00:51:11One more.
00:51:13Dig it. Left hook.
00:51:15Right hook.
00:51:18Up top with the right hand.
00:51:20Those body shots may be getting to Salido.
00:51:24Salido, mouth open.
00:51:30Listen to this crowd.
00:51:39Salido, punching off the ropes.
00:51:41Uppercut gets through.
00:51:43Guadalupe leading forward.
00:51:45Takes another uppercut.
00:51:47A left hand this time.
00:51:4948 seconds to go in the ninth round.
00:51:52One of the great rounds we've seen this year.
00:51:58Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:00can you say, Corrales,
00:52:02can you say, Corrales,
00:52:04can you say, Corrales,
00:52:06can you say, Corrales,
00:52:08can you say, Corrales,
00:52:10Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:12Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:14Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:16Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:18Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:20Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:22Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:24Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:26Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:28Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:30Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:32Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:34Can you say, Corrales,
00:52:37What a round!
00:52:49Nothing like it in a long time.
00:53:06What a round.
00:53:13In a round in which Orlando Salido outlanded
00:53:16In a round in which Orlando Salido outlanded
00:53:17him, Lopez, 37-22,
00:53:19but it felt closer than that, didn't it?
00:53:22Both men wailing away.
00:53:24Lopez pushed Salido back for much of the round,
00:53:27but both men landed monster shots,
00:53:30left hooks by Salido, right hand,
00:53:32and of course, Lopez landing some excellent right hooks as well.
00:53:36They just both went at it
00:53:38over the whole three-round period,
00:53:40and the lead right hands by Salido
00:53:42were pretty spectacular.
00:53:44If there ever was a 10-10 round,
00:53:47that was one.
00:53:49You could make a strong case for it.
00:53:51Myra Salido.
00:53:53And look at Salido's eyes, swelling under both.
00:53:56He's blinking, breathing,
00:53:59at the beginning of the 10th round,
00:54:01out of his mouth.
00:54:04Now, Salido has landed almost 100 punches more than Lopez.
00:54:08Oh, my!
00:54:09That's hurt!
00:54:10Already goes down!
00:54:12Salido!
00:54:14With the uppercut!
00:54:16One more!
00:54:18Staggering!
00:54:21And it's over again!
00:54:23That's it. That's a good stoppage.
00:54:25Good stoppage.
00:54:26Young man took a lot of punishment tonight, Al.
00:54:29Wow.
00:54:30Miguel Salido
00:54:32does it again
00:54:33in Puerto Rico!
00:55:00That's it.
00:55:25One of the important subplots of all this
00:55:28was that the two swelled-up eyes of Salido
00:55:31were making things problematic for him.
00:55:33But then he got Lopez in big trouble,
00:55:36knocked him down.
00:55:40He would struggle to his feet.
00:55:44And you see how he wobbled.
00:55:46Now, the referee did the right thing there,
00:55:48not stopping at that moment.
00:55:50But let's take a look again at the knockdown.
00:55:53There would be a huge right hand.
00:55:55That's the one that just got him in big trouble.
00:55:57And then the left.
00:55:58And there would be another right uppercut.
00:56:00Those were tremendous punches.
00:56:02And followed by a left.
00:56:03Now, it's important to note that
00:56:08the referee, Robert Ramirez Sr.,
00:56:11took a moment to take a look at Lopez.
00:56:16And he still didn't stop it.
00:56:18But all of a sudden, he sees Lopez wobbling
00:56:21and he looks at him and says,
00:56:22No, I've got to stop this fight.
00:56:24That's a great stoppage.
00:56:25Yes, it is.
00:56:26He would have to save a guy from himself.
00:56:28Yes.
00:56:29We knew Lopez was going to get up.
00:56:30We knew he wanted to fight and continue on.
00:56:32But it was just too far gone.
00:56:35I mean, he would have to have a miracle punch
00:56:37to stop Salido.
00:56:38And it seems as if Salido was getting stronger.
00:56:40He fought a gallant fight.
00:56:42You can't take anything away from Lopez.
00:56:45Let's go inside the ring to Jimmy Lennon Jr.
00:56:51Ladies and gentlemen,
00:56:53we have the time of 32 seconds.
00:56:55In round number 10.
00:57:03The referee stops the contest.
00:57:05The winner by way of technical knockout
00:57:08and still the WBO featherweight champion of the world,
00:57:14Orlando
00:57:16Siri
00:57:18Salido.
00:57:25Orlando Salido retains his WBO featherweight championship belt.
00:57:32Once again beating Juan Manuel Lopez
00:57:36in his home country in the final show stats.
00:57:41You can see the big margin in number of punches landed
00:57:46and in power punches landed.
00:57:48And for Salido, only 5 jabs landed in this fight,
00:57:53intriguingly.
00:57:54But all those power punches,
00:57:56the left hooks, the left uppercuts,
00:57:58the overhand rights that landed against Juan Manuel Lopez,
00:58:01who of course also did his share of landing.
00:58:03That's why those eyes are so swelled up for Orlando Salido.
00:58:17Time now to go inside the ring with Jim Gray
00:58:21who's standing by with the champion.
00:58:24All right, Gus, thank you very much.
00:58:26Orlando, congratulations.
00:58:28Felix De Jesus will translate for us.
00:58:31How would you assess this battle that you were just in?
00:58:47This is how he planned this fight.
00:58:48He knew it was going to be a tough fight.
00:58:49They knew they were going to counterpunch and change punches
00:58:52and it was just a tough fight.
00:58:53He's a tough fighter.
00:58:54You landed more than 2 to 1 power punches.
00:58:58Coming into this fight,
00:58:59would he have thought that be possible?
00:59:17He knew that if he was here in Puerto Rico
00:59:19and to win the decision,
00:59:20he needed to throw at least 2 to 1.
00:59:22Before we look at the knockdown,
00:59:24ask him to describe in his mind
00:59:26what he can remember of that 9th round.
00:59:28That was one of the greatest rounds
00:59:30that we've seen in an awful long time.
00:59:47We were both competing in that round.
00:59:48It was punch for punch.
00:59:49And luckily, he's the one that fell.
00:59:51Let's take a look now, if we can, Orlando,
00:59:54on the monitor right here.
00:59:55Tell us about the knockdown here in the 10th round.
01:00:05He worked with the uppers and then he came down.
01:00:10With the uppers and then the right hand put him down.
01:00:12And then, did you feel as though
01:00:14he was going to be able to get up?
01:00:16And he was able to get up.
01:00:18Did you know the fight was over at that moment?
01:00:26Yeah, he knew this guy was a warrior,
01:00:28so he still had 3 rounds in the bank, just in case.
01:00:30What does this rivalry mean to you
01:00:33now that you've concluded 2 fights
01:00:35against Juan Manuel Lopez?
01:00:37This is a classic between Mexico and Puerto Rico.
01:00:39It's always existed in boxing.
01:00:41And this time, it was his turn to win.
01:00:43How about a third? Would you do it again?
01:00:50Yeah, he's ready to fight for a third fight.
01:00:52Yeah.
01:00:54Congratulations.
01:00:55It was one of the outstanding performances.
01:00:57Thank you. Thank you.
01:00:58All right, let's take a look now at the video.
01:01:00We're going to take a look at the video
01:01:02and then we're going to take a look at the fight.
01:01:05All right, let's bring in Juan Manuel Lopez.
01:01:15Felix, what did he say?
01:01:16What did he say to you right there, Juan Manuel?
01:01:22Yeah, that he was very strong in this fight.
01:01:24That it was a very tough fight.
01:01:26How would you describe this fight, Juan Manuel?
01:01:28How would you describe this fight, Juan Manuel?
01:01:33That was dominating the fight.
01:01:34It was a tough fight, but he felt he was dominating the fight.
01:01:41He said that the referee stopped the fight.
01:01:43The other fight, his son stopped it, and now he stops it.
01:01:53Now he's basically saying that the referee stopped the fight
01:01:56because they have gambling problems.
01:02:02And he told the commission that the referee was a gambler.
01:02:06That he did it wrong in putting him as a referee.
01:02:11It's very responsible for the commission to put him as a referee
01:02:13knowing that he has a gambling problem, per Obama.
01:02:16Wait a minute.
01:02:17You feel as though a gambling problem was the difference in this fight?
01:02:20Even though you were being power-punched more than 2-1,
01:02:24you were out power-punched?
01:02:26Even though you were being power-punched more than 2-1,
01:02:29you still think it was because of the referee?
01:02:31Of course.
01:02:32He was giving me strong punches, but I was dominating the fight.
01:02:35I could've cut him.
01:02:37I was winning the fight.
01:02:38I was winning the fight.
01:02:39And basically, he was punching me hard 2-1,
01:02:41but I was winning the fight.
01:02:42I was dominating.
01:02:44You were very, very wobbly here after the knockdown.
01:02:47Tell us, in your mind, we don't have the monitor.
01:02:49Unfortunately, the monitor has gone out.
01:02:52Did you feel as though you were going to be able to continue?
01:03:01He's very conscious of what he's saying,
01:03:03that he could still continue to fight.
01:03:05All right, let's take a look now at the end of the fight.
01:03:08And please describe if you feel as though
01:03:10you are going to be able to continue
01:03:12based on what you see right here as you take a look, Juanma.
01:03:15He already said that he saw the replay,
01:03:16but that he said that he could still continue
01:03:18even though he saw the hard punches.
01:03:23He did hit me hard, but I could still continue.
01:03:28I stood up, and I was conscious that I could still fight.
01:03:32I think it's going to be very disturbing to the fans
01:03:35who are watching this, that you feel as though
01:03:37not only were you winning and dominating this fight,
01:03:39which clearly nothing would indicate that,
01:03:42but I think it's going to be disturbing
01:03:44that you think that there was some foul play.
01:03:46Are you sure that that is what you really feel and mean?
01:04:06He's still, you know, he's sorry about the fans,
01:04:08the way this ended, but that he still thinks
01:04:10that, you know, the referee had other issues.
01:04:14You were ahead on the judges' cards.
01:04:16Would you like to have a third fight with Orlando?
01:04:29Whatever my promoter says,
01:04:30I'm willing to fight with Toledo or anybody else.
01:04:36Juanma, we appreciate it. Thank you for your time.
01:04:40Thank you, guys.
01:04:41All right, Gus, back to you.
01:04:44Thank you very much, Jim.
01:04:45And time now to go to the official scoring.
01:04:49For Toledo, Lopez, and guys,
01:04:52we may have seen a different fight than the judges here.
01:04:55Well, very interesting.
01:04:56Denny Nelson, interestingly, we thought scored
01:04:58our Cloud Campeo fight correctly.
01:05:00I've got to take issue with him on this one.
01:05:02He had the fight as a draw.
01:05:04One of the other referees, Michael Pernick, had Lopez.
01:05:07Ironically, the winning score for Lopez
01:05:11came from a Puerto Rican judge.
01:05:13For Toledo, that's for Lopez.
01:05:15Actually, two scores for Lopez
01:05:17and then a draw on Denny Nelson.
01:05:19So I didn't agree with any of the scorecards.
01:05:23And let's look at Chuck Chiappa's scorecard
01:05:26as he looks at it.
01:05:28He had Toledo winning by a considerable margin.
01:05:35Now let's check out what's ahead
01:05:38on our Showtime Sports Boxing calendar.
01:05:41Showbox, the new generation,
01:05:43returns on back-to-back weekends.
01:05:45And guys, what's going on here?
01:05:47What jumps out at you?
01:05:49Well, you know, Figueroa, an undefeated young fighter,
01:05:51and Diego Magdaleno, a great amateur,
01:05:54both those fighters are going to be very interesting to see
01:05:57in tough fights, as always fighters are on Showbox.
01:06:00That's on March 16th and March 23rd.
01:06:04Then, on Showtime Championship Boxing,
01:06:07Abner Marez will head back into the ring
01:06:10to take on Murrell.
01:06:12And then, our colleague and five-time world champion
01:06:15and current world champion, Antonio Tarver,
01:06:18will go inside the ring to take on Coyote.
01:06:21And if you pull up Coyote's comments on YouTube, Antonio,
01:06:26he's telling you that you're washed up
01:06:28and he's going to take care of business.
01:06:30And he wants you, your response to your opponent.
01:06:33Well, be careful what you ask for.
01:06:35You just might get it.
01:06:36There'll be a lesson learned May 26th.
01:06:38Learn to respect your elders.
01:06:41And then the big one coming up on June 23rd,
01:06:44Ortiz-Berdo 2.
01:06:47And if it's anything like Salido-Wan-Ma 2,
01:06:50it will be something to see.
01:06:52Their first fight was fantastic,
01:06:53and we expect that one to be just as good.
01:06:56So, Antonio Tarver, you're going back inside the ring.
01:06:59Your last fight, you defeated Danny Green,
01:07:01went all the way down to Australia and stopped him.
01:07:04Now you're going to face Coyote.
01:07:06And I saw a YouTube video not too long ago.
01:07:09As a matter of fact, the last time we were together,
01:07:11he showed me the video.
01:07:12And this kid is big, strong.
01:07:14You've called some of his fights on Showbox,
01:07:16and you've criticized him at times.
01:07:18Now you'll get in the ring with him.
01:07:19Well, you know, I wasn't being critical on purpose.
01:07:21I was just telling it like I saw it.
01:07:23And, you know, he took offense to that,
01:07:25so he's going to have to meet me,
01:07:27and I'm going to have to figure it out on May 26th.
01:07:29But, I mean, I got to go and get in great shape.
01:07:31You know, I'll be ready mentally and physically.
01:07:33This guy is a power puncher.
01:07:35They call him Power.
01:07:36So I'm going to have my hands full.
01:07:37He's young.
01:07:38And I'm going to have to, you know,
01:07:39show him that these old guys are still here.
01:07:42And I'm going to have to make sure
01:07:44that I put my stamp of approval on that.
01:07:47All right, tonight, what a night, folks,
01:07:49of boxing here on Showtime.
01:07:51It started on Show Extreme,
01:07:53where McWilliams Arroyo
01:07:55took control of his flyweight bout
01:07:57against Luis Maldonado.
01:08:01But then in our first fight here,
01:08:04Mikey Garcia
01:08:06against Burnaby Concepcion.
01:08:08Garcia was patient and disciplined
01:08:11from the beginning
01:08:12with a TKO in round seven
01:08:14as he dropped the straight right hand
01:08:16on Concepcion to remain undefeated.
01:08:19And then in our main event,
01:08:21Al, what a night.
01:08:23Juanma Salido, too.
01:08:24The ninth round may be one of the best rounds of boxing
01:08:27we've seen in quite some time.
01:08:29Whatever you thought the scoring should have been
01:08:31at the time of the stoppage of this fight,
01:08:33we all agree it was a spectacular fight
01:08:35and, in my opinion, an appropriate stoppage.
01:08:38And Orlando Salido gets the win
01:08:40against a great fighter in Juan Manuel Lopez.
01:08:45Gus Johnson along with Al Bernstein
01:08:47and Antonio Tarver and Champ will start with you.
01:08:50Juanma Salido.
01:08:52Salido once again comes into Puerto Rico,
01:08:54this time as the champion.
01:08:56He defends his title in dramatic fashion
01:08:59and he just looked like the kind of fighter
01:09:02that in order to beat him, you gotta hit him with a bat.
01:09:04Yeah, definitely, man.
01:09:05He's a hardened veteran.
01:09:06He's a champion now
01:09:07and he's loving the taste of that.
01:09:09And when you look at Lopez,
01:09:10I mean, you have to really say
01:09:12that a lot has been taken out of him
01:09:14with these type of wars.
01:09:16I mean, you just cannot continue to go through
01:09:19this type of punishment and be the same fighter.
01:09:21He's gonna have to go back to the drawing board
01:09:23and he's gonna have to just start slow
01:09:26to get back to the top.
01:09:27Al, you've been in boxing for over 30 years.
01:09:32Salido beating Lopez here
01:09:35and, Lopez, some of the comments that he made
01:09:37after the fight were very interesting comments
01:09:40to our Jim Gray.
01:09:42But he had just been stopped.
01:09:44Obviously, there's disappointment there.
01:09:46His head might not be as clear as it could be tomorrow.
01:09:49I think part of the problem with those comments
01:09:51is, you know, number one,
01:09:53those were pretty heavy accusations
01:09:55to make against the referee.
01:09:57Number two, I think he was just a bit delusional
01:10:00about the idea of the stoppage.
01:10:02And number three, this speaks to the judging
01:10:05and it speaks to the way this fight played out.
01:10:07To be very honest, Orlando Salido,
01:10:09according to show stats and the way everyone was seeing it,
01:10:12outpunched power punching,
01:10:14outpunched Juan Manuel Lopez by a lot.
01:10:17So it's very hard to make a case
01:10:19for Lopez being ahead in that fight
01:10:21at the time of the stoppage,
01:10:22which is what the judges said.
01:10:24However, maybe the key element here
01:10:26is that two great fighters got together
01:10:28to create a great fight.
01:10:30And maybe if we want to just look at this
01:10:32through gauze-colored glasses or rose-colored glasses,
01:10:34we can say that might be the headline of the night.
01:10:37And Al, you know, I gotta ask you a question.
01:10:39Why does this happen in boxing?
01:10:42It's almost as if there's a philosophy,
01:10:44are you gonna believe me or your lying eyes?
01:10:47We've seen this in back-to-back shows,
01:10:50and it's something that's very disturbing.
01:10:53In my opinion, it's lack of concentration by the judges.
01:10:56You have to, and Chuck Chiappa scored it, I think, correctly.
01:10:59You have to look at the punches,
01:11:01who's landing and how effective are they,
01:11:03and the number of them as well.
