03:28Hello again, everybody. Gus Johnson here in El Paso, Texas.
03:32How good have boxing's little guys been?
03:35Well, in seven of the last eight years, the Ring Magazine Fight of the Year
03:39has been at 135 pounds or below.
03:43Two of today's best lighterweight fighters are Abner Marez and Anselmo Moreno,
03:48and they'll be featured in world title fights this evening.
03:52Marez is unbeaten, a former Bantamweight champion
03:55for the pound-for-pound top ten.
03:57Tonight, Marez is fighting for a title at Super Bantamweight,
04:01the division in which he fought his first 15 professional bouts.
04:05Moreno is a long-reigning champion at 118.
04:09In fact, he hasn't lost in 10 years.
04:12We expect exciting fights for both tonight,
04:14which is typical for these weight classes.
04:18I'm pleased to be joined by my partners,
04:20International Boxing Hall of Famer and one of the most trusted men in all of boxing,
04:24Al Bernstein and the Magic Man himself,
04:27five-time world champion Antonio Tarver.
04:30And Al, as for Abner Marez, we've seen his maturation.
04:35He's fought four grueling fights.
04:38Now he moves up to a higher division
04:41and has to take on a former Olympian as well as a former world champion.
04:45Yeah, you know, in the parlance of college football,
04:48which you've done quite a bit of,
04:50this is a fight that could be like a trap game for Abner Marez
04:53because he's fought a number of high-level, very competitive matches,
04:57and now he faces a man who, at least in perception, isn't quite on that level.
05:02You can have a letdown in that situation.
05:05Marez assures us that will not happen this evening.
05:08He said he understands that Eric Morel is a very, very good fighter still,
05:12and he said my preparation was impeccable.
05:14Now, he better be because Eric Morel, even at age 36, is a very good fighter.
05:19He may not be the fighter that he was 12 years ago when he won his first title,
05:22but even a couple fights ago against Luis Maldonado, a contender,
05:27he won decidedly, and he showed that he still had speed, he still had power,
05:33and he still knew what to do in the ring, guys, so this should be a very good fight.
05:36And now you know what they say about trap games.
05:38Yeah.
05:39Don't eat the cheese.
05:41Exactly.
05:42All right, champ.
05:43Abner Marez, it didn't take him long to move up
05:46after gaining championships at the phantomweight division.
05:51Meanwhile, for Anselmo Moreno, different story.
05:54He's been the champ at 118 for 10 years.
05:57Yes, and he's honed his skills in pretty much obscurity.
06:01And the first time he was on Showtime,
06:03what a masterful boxing lesson that he gave the veteran Victor Darchenian.
06:06It was that fight that I really saw the skills
06:10that make him such a great fighter, I think.
06:13Now, as he progressed tonight with David Delamore,
06:19he felt that his conditioning was going to be the key
06:21in turning back Moreno's defense.
06:24He went to the mountains where there's no aptitude there.
06:26He feels that a volume of punches will be the difference.
06:29Skill versus will tonight.
06:31And I believe when the smoke clears, a fighter like Moreno,
06:34I've compared him to Prenell Whitaker.
06:36You'll see why tonight.
06:37He's right in front of his opponents.
06:38He makes a miss, he counterpunches with effectiveness,
06:41and he's so hard to hit.
06:43And I think that's the style that can beat pretty much any bantamweight out there today.
06:46All right, and you're absolutely right.
06:48For Delamore, having a chance to train at high altitude
06:51could definitely help him in terms of his conditioning
06:54for this evening's fight.
06:57And Moreno, he's fought in a multitude of countries,
07:00but this will be only his second time fighting in the United States of America.
07:04So we are set for our first fight of the night
07:07with Panama's Anselmo Moreno,
07:09who's held the WBA bantamweight title for four years.
07:14Moreno is defending against Mexico's David Delamora,
07:18a contender who came very close to winning a world title last August.
07:22So, entering the ring, David Delamora.
07:25This young man from Tijuana, Mexico,
07:28ranks seventh in the WBA.
07:31His father, a taxi driver.
07:33His dad was also a boxer that introduced him to the sweet science.
07:39We mentioned that this young man had challenged in two fights ago
07:43for a world title against Koki Kameda.
07:46He went all the way to Japan to do that.
07:48Lost a razor-close decision to him.
07:50So he's got one world championship fight under his belt,
07:54but the man he's facing has eight.
07:56And so, for Delamore, it's a question of dealing with the moment
08:01and the experience of Moreno.
08:03Yeah, and it's your second time at a world title fight,
08:05and he knows and understands that these opportunities come far in between, Al.
08:09And I believe with the conditioning, he feels that pressure,
08:13not the first, second punch, but the third, fourth, fifth punch,
08:16will be the answer to Moreno's slickness and elusiveness.
08:20So Delamore, with an opportunity to fight for the world championship
08:26for the second time, he said,
08:28this is an incredible and meaningful challenge to me.
08:33Having a chance to fight the top guy,
08:35I came here because I know I can win.
08:38I did not come here to see if I could win.
08:42He's very confident at 23 years of age.
08:46You don't see a little fighter like that leap over the top rope very often.
08:49That was impressive.
08:53The champion, Anselmo Moreno,
08:57fighting out of Panama, 32-1-1,
09:01he is a slick boxer.
09:04He knows how to move in the ring,
09:06as you guys would say, great ring generalship.
09:08Boy, is it ever. He's a confident man.
09:11He said he was never in doubt that he was gonna beat Vic Darcini.
09:14You talk about boxing, here's a statistic that jumps out at you.
09:18In his last five opponents,
09:20those men have landed only 17% of the punches they've thrown against Moreno.
09:25This guy is a great defensive fighter.
09:27And, Al, when you can't land more than 17%,
09:30he tells you that this guy really understands his craft.
09:33He believes in his style.
09:35And when I compare him to Pernell Whitaker,
09:37I'm not saying that he's a great Pernell,
09:39but I'm saying he reminds me of him.
09:41When you can't hit this guy with a hand of rice,
09:44it makes a difference.
09:46Anselmo Moreno, a young man
09:48that has faced great adversity in his boxing career.
09:51As a matter of fact, he had defended his title seven times.
09:55He didn't even have a bank account.
09:58And the judges at the time were giving him $200 a week.
10:02But recently, he signed with Golden Boy.
10:06And now Moreno, for the second time,
10:09will fight in front of an American audience.
10:14And that brings us to the tail of the tape.
10:1712 rounds for the Super Phantomweight WBC world title...
10:25as Moreno takes on De La Mora.
10:28And as we look at these numbers, of course we got the height,
10:31but the big number that jumps out at you is the reach,
10:34where Moreno is gonna use that to very good advantage.
10:37He's very good at fighting tall, using that reach,
10:41and the jab that he sticks out there
10:43is very difficult to get past.
10:45So 12-round Phantomweight WBA world championship.
10:50I correct myself as we take a look at the rules for this fight.
10:54There's no standing eight count. These are unified rules.
10:56No three-knockdown rule.
10:58And, of course, only the ref can stop the fight.
11:00No fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
11:03And then, of course, if the fight is stopped
11:05before the end of the fourth round due to a clash of heads,
11:08it would be a no decision.
11:10And after that, they would go to the scorecards.
11:13All right, we're ready now for our first championship fight
11:16of this evening, so let's go to the ring
11:18for the official introduction from Jimmy Linen Jr.
11:25Ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening to you,

12:13from New Mexico, Levi Martinez,
12:16and from Puerto Rico, Nelson Vasquez.
12:20And our third man in the ring,
12:22he's our referee in charge, Luis Pabon.
12:26All right, fans, here we go.
12:2912 rounds of boxing
12:31for the WBA Bantamweight Championship of the World.
12:38Introducing to you first, the challenger on my right,
12:41fighting out of the blue corner,
12:43wearing black trunks with blue trim,
12:45hailing from Tijuana, Baja, California, Mexico.
12:50He weighed in at already 117.5 pounds
12:54with a record of 24 wins and one loss.
12:57He has 17 wins coming by way of knockout.
13:01Currently ranked the WBA number seven contender.
13:04Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome
13:06the former world title challenger,
13:08known as Morita.
13:10Introducing David de la Mora.
13:21And his opponent across the ring on my left,
13:24fighting out of the red corner,
13:25recognized as a WBA super champion.
13:29Entering the ring wearing purple trunks with white trim,
13:32hailing from El Martillo, San Miguelito, Panama.
13:37He weighed in the same as his opponent,
13:39117.5 pounds, with a record of 32 wins,
13:43one loss, and one draw.
13:45He has 11 wins coming by way of knockout.
13:49Tonight, making the 10th defense of his title,
13:53ladies and gentlemen, here is the longtime
13:55and current WBA bantamweight champion of the world.
14:00Introducing Anselmo Cernito Moreno.
14:12Once again, a referee in charge.
14:13Now to give instructions, Luis Pabon.
14:18Okay, muchachos.
14:19Ya yo le di la instrucción en el camerino.
14:21Vamos a una pelea limpia.
14:22Que tengan suerte, que Dios los bendiga.
14:23Suerte.
14:30So here we are, El Paso, Texas.
14:34As you take a look at David de la Mora,
14:37one loss to Koki Kameda when he fought
14:40for the WBA bantamweight world championship,
14:44a unanimous decision for Kameda.
14:46Conditioning was poor, but he trained at high altitude.
14:48He says he's ready for the mover,
14:51Anselmo Moreno, who is a brilliant boxer.
14:57Round one, scheduled for 12.
15:02Now, gentlemen, as this fight gets ready to begin,
15:05what should we pay attention to for both of these men?
15:09Well, for de la Mora, I think the trick is how quickly
15:15can he start to go to the body,
15:17and can he start to throw those volume of punches
15:19that he was talking about?
15:20Can he start that process quickly in this fight?
15:24And for Moreno, I feel that if he can just dictate
15:27with his style and don't get outside of himself,
15:30put those combinations together,
15:31have his opponent missing all night,
15:33I think he can go on to victory.
15:36So Anselmo Moreno coming off a unanimous decision
15:39over Vic Darchinian, and you know how tough Darchinian is,
15:43but Moreno able to use his boxing skills,
15:46and you talk about it all the time,
15:48and Darchinian was really frustrated in that fight.
15:51Yeah, you know, it's the most difficult thing
15:53when you're in there with a fighter,
15:54is if he's tagging you and you can't hit him back.
15:57You get frustrated,
15:58you throw your fight game out of the window,
16:00and that's what Moreno does to some of these guys, man.
16:03They're right there.
16:04They're wondering, why can't I hit this guy solid?
16:07Moreno has already started to unload
16:09with the straight left hand,
16:10and he's also counterpunching De La Mora as he's coming in,
16:13so the early signs are very good for Moreno
16:16right at this moment.
16:17It's very early in the fight.
16:18And Moreno has won 26 fights in a row
16:22since suffering his only loss in his 8th fight,
16:25October of 2002.
16:34De La Mora's trying to give him feints
16:36to see if that will allow him to get on the inside.
16:39Moreno's not really going for those.
16:42Moreno coming off the 7th round TKO over Eddie Julio.
16:47Nice body shot by Anselmo Moreno,
16:53forcing De La Mora back to the ropes.
16:58And how do you get close to a slick guy, Antonio?
17:01I mean, that's difficult.
17:02That's difficult because, I mean, you know,
17:04you have to really zone in on the body
17:07because, you know, you can always move your head,
17:10but that body is gonna be there.
17:12He needs to really just try to stationary,
17:14make this guy stationary for a minute
17:16and then catch him up top with a shot.
17:18As a matter of fact, De La Mora telling us,
17:20I'm not a hard puncher, but I work hard in the ring.
17:24My knockouts are body shots.
17:27Yeah, most of them have come through body shots.
17:29So far in round one,
17:30he hasn't really gotten downstairs at all.
17:34De La Mora, 24 and 1 with 17 KOs.
17:4018 seconds remaining in round one,
17:42scheduled for 12.
17:44The WBA World Championship on the line.
17:48Champion Anselmo Moreno in purple,
17:51the challenger David De La Mora in black and blue.
17:58And we come to the end of the first round.
18:02And Al, as you look at this fight,
18:04what are the keys?
18:08Well, for Anselmo Moreno,
18:11he wants to stay in the center of the ring.
18:13De La Mora is good at pressuring fighters on the ropes,
18:16and so he'll want to stay in the center of the ring.
18:18De La Mora will come to him, so he's got to counter well,
18:21and he did that in round one.
18:22The left hand, bedeviled Darcinian,
18:24and it could be the difference in this fight.
18:26Moreno was able to get some of those in early.
18:30And for De La Mora,
18:32you can't hit Moreno with single punches.
18:34We already saw that.
18:35De La Mora is a good combination puncher.
18:37He's got to use that.
18:38And sometimes De La Mora lunges in
18:40when throwing a right hand,
18:41and Moreno will counter him if he does that.
18:44Moreno has a quick and powerful left hand.
18:46De La Mora has to keep his right hand up
18:48in order to block it.
18:54Round two scheduled for 12,
18:56the WBA Bantamweight Championship.
18:59Anselmo Moreno of Panama,
19:01the champion in the purple trunks,
19:04and the challenger,
19:05David De La Mora of Tijuana, Mexico,
19:08in black and blue.
19:12And quite often,
19:14some critics have said about Anselmo Moreno,
19:17he's very successful in the ring,
19:19but he is not a fun fighter to watch.
19:22Well, you know, like I said,
19:23Pernell Whitaker, they always say,
19:24wasn't a fun fighter to watch
19:26because he didn't get a lot of knockouts.
19:28He knocked guys out when he had to.
19:30But, you know, you've got to love the mastery
19:32of this guy's game.
19:34I'm looking at other opponents
19:36and see how he matches up.
19:38I think his style will be difficult
19:40and very hard to solve for any of those guys.
19:42You're going to need to be a knockout artist
19:44and really put this guy on his heel
19:46and hurt him, I think, to stop him.
19:48Yeah, and if you're talking about effectiveness,
19:50the numbers in round one from show stats,
19:52how about these?
19:531 out of 21 for De La Mora
19:56and 18 out of 38 from Moreno.
19:58I guess that speaks to Pernell Whitaker-like defense.
20:00Exactly.
20:06And, you know, the fact is Moreno does land punches,
20:09and he did against Darchinian,
20:11and he is tonight as well,
20:12so there's a good straight left hand from him.
20:14As a matter of fact,
20:17Moreno felt that he could have knocked out Vic Darchinian.
20:19He felt I could...
20:20He said I could do whatever I wanted to do with Vic,
20:23and I'm disappointed that when the opportunity came
20:25to stop him, I didn't take advantage of it.
20:27Well, maybe he'll focus more on being the closer
20:30that, you know, all the great champions are.
20:33And you see this guy, De La Mora, now,
20:35he's running, literally running in the ring.
20:39It's the David De La Mora
20:41invitational track meet right now.
20:43Nice straight left hand by Moreno.
20:48And Moreno's landing power punches.
20:49That's part of the reason why he had De La Mora on his bicycle.
20:55And De La Mora...
21:07Less than a minute to go
21:08in the second round scheduled for 12.
21:12Now De La Mora trying to be more active,
21:14switching from orthodox to southpaw.
21:17Interestingly, it's been Moreno,
21:19not De La Mora, going to the body.
21:21Nice right hand,
21:2425 seconds to go in the second.
21:31We'll see if he can get out of this round.
21:34I think De La Mora is not seriously hurt,
21:36but that was a power shot downstairs.
21:38Let's see what the champion put together,
21:40and maybe he'll get that knockout he's been looking for.
21:45And remember, De La Mora went 12 full rounds
21:47in a close fight to Koki Kameda, who's a champion,
21:50so it's impressive what Moreno's doing.
21:52Straight left hand to the body by Moreno.
21:56Moreno in complete control now,
21:58digging to the body with the right hand.
22:00And De La Mora will get out of the round,
22:02and he's hurt.
22:03He is hurt.
22:04That last body shot
22:07took the gas out of the tank.
22:09Did he hurt you? Did he hurt you?
22:12I'm okay, I'm okay, but he did hurt me.
22:17Let me get some water.
22:23Where was the punch?
22:25How are you feeling? You're okay now?
22:28Look at me. I'm okay, I'm okay.
22:35Well, we talked about De La Mora doing body work.
22:38In fact, it was Moreno who did the body work.
22:41We got a couple of different looks at the knockdown.
22:45Right hand that kind of hit him on the side,
22:49and then a straight left hand.
22:51You know, it's interesting.
22:52There's the right hook, actually, to the head.
22:55So it was a head shot that actually did the first damage,
22:58and then later a body shot would hurt him.
23:00De La Mora having a hard time breathing
23:03between rounds, trying to take deep breaths.
23:06They loosened up his trunks a little bit,
23:08but another good body shot to the midsection
23:10could end this fight.
23:12Third round scheduled for 12.
23:14Hey, Gus, that was a paralyzing shot there
23:16right before the round ended.
23:17It took him at least a minute and a half
23:19to get his breath.
23:22Moreno closing in, trying to set up that shot.
23:25Right hook.
23:28De La Mora fighting off the ropes,
23:31trying to catch his breath.
23:36The one thing you see about this poised champion
23:38is that he don't waste any shots now.
23:40I mean, these are pinpoint-accurate punches
23:42from downstairs and that hook to the head.
23:45Yeah, that's a really good point.
23:47No wasted motion.
23:48He doesn't throw 30 punches to hopefully land five
23:51when he's got somebody in trouble.
23:52He's very precise in what he does.
23:55Accurate punching by Anselmo Moreno,
23:58Chimo, his nickname.
24:03Managed by his wife, who is pregnant
24:05with their first child together.
24:07They each have a child from a previous marriage,
24:09but so very exciting moments for him
24:12out of the ring as well.
24:14Anselmo Moreno, five sisters, ten brothers.
24:18His father, officially.
24:22That's a straight line that none of us will use.
24:281.30 to go.
24:29In the third.
24:30Scheduled for 12.
24:31The WBA Bantamweight Championship.
24:34The champion, Anselmo Moreno in purple.
24:36The challenger, in a lot of trouble,
24:38David De La Mora.
24:40And there are the body shots again.
24:43Moreno can just do anything he wants right now.
24:47De La Mora just can't land anything.
24:49He tried a wild left hook a moment ago.
24:51Didn't even come close.
24:53De La Mora pinned in the corner.
24:57Straight left hand for Moreno.
25:02Now, De La Mora turning and firing shots.
25:05Misses with the left hook twice.
25:09Moreno holding.
25:13This is what De La Mora needs to do is pin him down
25:18and maybe get a shot or two in there, Gus.
25:22He did at least land a couple of left hands in that.
25:25And there's another left hook.
25:27De La Mora dropped it.
25:28Oh, and he slipped.
25:29He slipped.
25:31No knockdown.
25:38But an aggressive ending to the second round
25:40for David De La Mora,
25:42who went down in the first round
25:44to a Moreno right hook.
25:51Seven seconds left.
25:58And it's starting to get hot
26:01in El Paso, Texas.
26:04All right, let's make sense of eternity.
26:07Okay.
26:09Nice and calm.
26:10Nothing happened.
26:14Do not get desperate.
26:15Do not get desperate.
26:16But you got to keep throwing.
26:18Always on the mark.
26:21And start throwing at the chest.
26:23Don't let him revive.
26:26Well, a wild ending to that last round.
26:28Now, De La Mora is going to have to
26:30Well, a wild ending to that last round.
26:32Now, De La Mora had been in the corner
26:34getting really a lot of punishment.
26:36Then he managed to turn things around here.
26:39A lot of those missing,
26:40but there were some left hands that got in
26:42over the course of time.
26:44And then here's where Moreno would go down.
26:48Now, he was going to say,
26:50push or is it a punch?
26:51It's probably a push.
26:52The right hand missed.
26:53And Moreno went off balance and went back.
26:55But at least De La Mora was aggressive
26:57and he did land a couple of punches.
27:01This is the fourth round coming up
27:03for the WBA Bantamweight Championship.
27:06The longtime champion of four years
27:08Anselmo Moreno in purple.
27:10Taking on the challenger David De La Mora
27:13of Tijuana, Mexico in blue and black.
27:17De La Mora knocked down with a right hook
27:19in the first round of this fight.
27:22But managed his best round in the third.
27:26You got to give him credit for trying.
27:27He really laid it out there.
27:28And he understands this is the title fight.
27:30So he did what he had to do.
27:31He pinned him down and he landed one or two shots.
27:34I don't know how effective they were,
27:35but he changed the tide a little bit.
27:38And if he can do more of that,
27:40he might contain the tide altogether.
27:42At least he got himself somewhat back into the fight
27:45with that little burst of a rally.
27:49This fight is being televised back to Panama
27:51on live television.
27:53And we were told they might get as much
27:55as an 80 share down there.
27:57Amazing.
27:58So Moreno, very popular figure in Panama.
28:01And there will be lots of sets tuned to that fight
28:04tonight down there.
28:08And you know, he's a stalker now.
28:10Obviously, you know, he wants to get him out of there.
28:13And there's that right hook again.
28:16Straight left hand glancing for Moreno.
28:21As he moves in.
28:23De La Mora has spent a lot of time in this corner.
28:28You almost feel like De La Mora's waiting to counter punch,
28:31but he can't seem to do it.
28:32Yeah, you know, we never thought that he would be...
28:38We never thought that De La Mora would be backing up
28:41and be stuck in this corner
28:43when he knew that pressure
28:45and the volume of punches would be his answer,
28:48you know, for victory tonight.
28:58Oh!
29:04David De La Mora's dad and his two uncles were both boxers.
29:07He went to the gym at eight.
29:09He went to the gym first at 10 years old.
29:11He wanted to go at eight, and his dad said,
29:13no, you can't go to your 10.
29:14And on his birthday at 10, he went to the gym.
29:16So he loves this sport.
29:19Tough night tonight for him so far, though.
29:2730 seconds remaining in the fourth round,
29:29scheduled for 12.
29:45Straight left hand getting in for Moreno
29:48as we come to the end of the round.
29:58And boom.
30:00So four in the books here in El Paso, Texas.
30:03And I'll tell you what, Al.
30:05Texas, it's been a very interesting place
30:08to watch fights recently.
30:10Yeah, they've had a little bit of a dice year,
30:12the commission, down here.
30:13A number of controversies.
30:14First, on February 4th of this year,
30:16the commission botched the post-fight drug test
30:19after the Julio Cesar Chavez, Marco Antonio and Rubio fight.
30:22They simply didn't do it.
30:23And two weeks later, we were down here
30:25with two Texas judges doing their first title matches ever,
30:29scored Tavoras Cloud, Ramon Campeo fight,
30:32160-110, 114-112 for Cloud,
30:35a match everyone thought that Campeo won.
30:37And then finally, on March 24th,
30:39John Shirley disqualified Carlos Molina
30:44when Molina's cornerman entered the ring
30:46at the end of round 10 against James Kirkland
30:50after there had been a knockdown of Molina
30:52and the bell had already rung.
30:53That was a very controversial decision.
30:55So it's been a difficult year down here in Texas.
31:01We head into the fifth round,
31:02scheduled for 12 at the WBA Bantamweight Championship.
31:06We've had one knockdown in this fight
31:08and Selmo Moreno knocking down David Delamora
31:11in the second round with a right hook.
31:15The champion in purple, the challenger in black and blue.
31:20And, gentlemen, would you say
31:21this is an awkward fight so far?
31:23Yeah, it's definitely a surprise.
31:25It's definitely a clash of styles,
31:27but if Delamora wants to do something in this fight,
31:30he's gonna have to take some risks.
31:32And in order to take those risks,
31:33he's gonna have to allow Moreno to come in,
31:36get comfortable with those shots,
31:37and he's gonna have to counterpunch the counterpuncher.
31:40And sometimes that's risky,
31:42but he's gonna have to do that
31:43if he want to land a big shot
31:45that Moreno is not expecting.
31:46And that's what he's trying to do, Antonio.
31:48You're right, but he just isn't able to.
31:50And, you know, the key point here is,
31:52he went 12 rounds with Pineda,
31:53who's a good fighter and had a championship,
31:56but this shows you that Moreno's on a different level,
31:59as you pointed out, from most of the Bantamweight stuff.
32:02He's just better.
32:08Don't forget, coming up, our main event here
32:10on Showtime Championship Boxing,
32:13Abner Mares, who has fought four consecutive wars,
32:17a draw with Yanni Perez,
32:18a split decision with Vic D'Artagnan,
32:21two grueling battles with Joseph Ibeko,
32:24winning both, claiming his first championship.
32:27Now moving up in weight
32:29from Bantamweight to Super Bantamweight
32:32and taking on Eric Morrell, a former Olympian.
32:36Eric Morrell, a former world champion,
32:38your teammate on the 96th Olympic team in Atlanta.
32:41Oh, yeah, Eric Morrell, man,
32:42is one of those guys I know, once he gets it going,
32:46if he can get two or three rounds in the bank,
32:48I mean, in that confidence,
32:51he's gonna be a tough out.
32:53Still a very capable fighter.
32:55Very capable, because he hasn't taken a lot of punishment
32:57throughout his career.
32:58Absolutely.
32:59You know, he knows what it means to be a champion.
33:01He knows this may be his last call.
33:03So I think you'll see a desperate Eric Morrell
33:06and hopefully a better Eric Morrell.
33:10Del Amor, this round, while he, you know,
33:13he's had a little bit better round
33:15than he did in the other round.
33:17Not to say he's winning it, but he's done a bit better.
33:25No es necesario, vamos.
33:27No es necesario.
33:38Limpio, limpio.
33:45Stiff jab by Moreno.
33:48Backing up now.
33:49He's been the aggressor for most of this fight.
33:53The right hook has been dangerous,
33:55resulting in the knockdown in the second round.
34:01Abner Mares.
34:06Out of the Hawaiian Gardens Projects
34:08outside of Los Angeles.
34:10Here's a young man that
34:14left California to go back to Mexico City
34:18at 15 years old.
34:19Ended up on the Olympic boxing team.
34:23He's sharp.
34:25He's approaching his prime
34:27and he'll take on a former champion.
34:31Eric, little hands of steel, Morrell.
34:35He said that after some of his troubles,
34:38he's rededicated his life to his sport.
34:41Because of his family, he knows that this may be
34:45his last shot at a world championship.
34:50Out, out, let's go.
34:52Let's go out.
34:53There you go, homie.
34:55There.
35:20He's close.
35:25Short uppercut by Moreno.
35:28There's that straight left hand to the body.
35:33And that would seem to be the ticket.
35:34Go back to the body and he might be able
35:36to get a stoppage or a knockdown.
35:38In talking to Delamore yesterday in our fighter meeting,
35:41you would have never thought
35:42that he would have fought this kind of fight.
35:44He said that he had to attack the body.
35:46He had to be aggressive.
35:47He had to cut off the ring.
35:48But you know what?
35:49When you look at the champion Moreno,
35:51that's his game plan, to frustrate you.
35:53You feel me?
35:54You cannot hit a guy with a sonic punch
35:57and he's always tagging you, tattooing you.
35:59I mean, you want to just go somewhere and hide.
36:02Really.
36:03It's frustrating.
36:04You know, he's got one knockout
36:06in his eight championship wins, Moreno.
36:09And I'm sure he'd like to put another one on that ledger.
36:13Low blow there.
36:16No, no, it looked like he had the injury.
36:19It looks like he's twisted his ankle.
36:21I'm sorry. Wow.
36:22Or maybe his knee.
36:24And now they will continue.
36:27That could be significant,
36:28depending on how serious it is for Moreno.
36:36And will that, if that injury is going to bother him,
36:39will that make him more aggressive
36:40to try and get Delamore out of there?
36:45Take a look at the show stats.
36:47Moreno, aggressive in total punches,
36:50connecting on 45%.
36:53And you get some slick boxers,
36:54you know, they run around the ring and all that,
36:56and it's really hard to watch.
36:58Ooh, there's that straight left hand to the body,
37:00and it drops him again.
37:03First, it was a right hook,
37:04and the second round, that knocked Delamore down.
37:11And once again,
37:13Moreno landing the body shot.
37:16Second knockdown of this fight.
37:18Can he put him away, though,
37:20as Delamore gets on his horse wisely?
37:25It seems like Moreno has the capability
37:28to get that power shot downstairs.
37:31It's like he's generating a lot of power
37:33with those body shots.
37:36Delamore laying on the ropes.
37:3930 seconds to go.
37:40Two knockdowns in this fight.
37:42We're in the sixth
37:43for the WBA Bantamweight Championships,
37:46scheduled for 12.
37:48Some fighters get more leverage
37:50when they throw to the body,
37:51and, oh, my, Delamore just looks out of it
37:54at this juncture in this fight.
37:57He just can't land a glove.
37:58He just can't land a glove.
38:01Let's go.
38:19Did he get you downstairs again?
38:22Another body shot.
38:27Please, some water on my head, on my head.
38:31How are you feeling, okay?
38:35Dangerous moment in this fight for
38:38Anselmo Moreno
38:42when there was a trip, and
38:46it created at least a momentary injury.
38:49There you see the legs getting caught up,
38:51and that could have been very dangerous for Moreno.
38:54As it was, it did affect him,
38:57but came back and fought the rest of the round
39:00very effectively,
39:01and as we see here, Antonio.
39:03Yeah, it just, whoa, right to the solar plexus.
39:06I mean, those are the type of punches
39:07that debilitate you, like right there.
39:10Delayed reaction.
39:11Al, I want to ask you,
39:12if that injury would have caused Moreno
39:15to not be able to go on,
39:16how would they judge that or score that?
39:18Could he have lost his title on that?
39:20Well, yeah, if you can't continue at that juncture,
39:24unless it was ruled that, you know,
39:26Delamore created it.
39:28Jeff Deneclos lost his title that way at one point,
39:31so it could have happened.
39:33We are at the halfway point
39:34in this WBA bantamweight title bout.
39:37David Delamora way behind,
39:42and he will be challenged to finish this fight.
39:45Let's bring in Chuck Giampa.
39:47Chuck, your thoughts about what you've seen thus far.
39:50Oh, I've got Moreno completely dominating.
39:53He's fast, he's quick, he's effective.
39:56Going to the head, going to the body.
39:58What's interesting is he'll do a combination
40:00and then step back and counter his own punches.
40:02So completely dominating.
40:04I've got him winning 60 to 52.
40:07All right, Moreno has knocked down Delamore
40:10with a straight left hand to the body.
40:12Almost knocked him down
40:14previous to the 6th round
40:16with a straight left hand to the body.
40:18He knocked him down with a right hook in the 2nd round.
40:21Right now, Delamore fighting just to survive.
40:25You know, we talked about Delamore training in Mexico,
40:28and he said, there's no excuse.
40:30If I lose, he's the better man.
40:32Interestingly, you would think with all that training,
40:34the body work, he would have been able to survive
40:36a little better earlier.
40:38Maybe it just shows the power Moreno has downstairs.
40:40Yeah, I mean, when you train in high aptitude,
40:42it gives you a great advantage in lung capacity.
40:45You're able to fight harder for a longer period of time,
40:48but we're just not seeing it.
40:50I mean, Moreno has really had his way tonight,
40:53and these are the skills that I saw
40:56when he did a job on Victor Chinien.
40:59I mean, this guy could be, you know,
41:01head and shoulders above the rest.
41:03Now we just want to see him in with bigger name opponents.
41:06Exactly. That Chinien thing, of course, was a good beginning.
41:10You know, as he dominates Delamore,
41:15obviously he's thinking about the Nonito Donairs at 122,
41:19Abner Morris, or if Morris in fact beats Eric Morel,
41:23which remains to be seen, up at 122.
41:27Jorge Arce, another name that you could throw around.
41:30So Moreno, as you point out, Antonio,
41:33we want to see him in those bigger fights as he goes on.
41:37I still feel that I don't know how these fighters
41:40are going to solve this puzzle.
41:42I mean, especially with this guy
41:44delivering those type of body shots.
41:46Yeah, that's another element that we saw
41:48in the fight against Delamore.
41:50He's going to keep it up against our Chinien,
41:52but not like this.
41:54You know, the interesting thing is we look at Delamore.
41:57He was prepped for this fight.
41:59He fought 12 rounds with a left-handed champion.
42:02You know, that's as good as you can do
42:04to get ready for this fight.
42:06Let's go.
42:36Moreno.
42:48Anselmo Moreno in purple and gold,
42:51the champion.
42:55Taking on David Delamora in blue,
42:59the challenger from Tijuana.
43:0124-1, 17 KOs.
43:03Moreno hasn't lost since 2002.
43:06He's fought in many countries,
43:08Germany twice, France twice, Venezuela,
43:10as well as Haiti, but only the second time.
43:13And this story is a very interesting story.
43:15We alluded to it during his ring walk.
43:19Anselmo Moreno, according to him,
43:22had bad management to the point
43:24where he had defended his title seven times
43:27and didn't even have a bank account.
43:29He was being paid $200 a week.
43:32But things changed for him recently.
43:34Yeah, Samson Lukowicz, he got on as an advisor.
43:38They turned things around for him,
43:40got his life on order.
43:42His new wife was married for two years,
43:44has a real estate business with him,
43:46so his life has really stabilized.
43:48You know, when you hear a tale like that,
43:50it reminds you of 30, 40 years ago.
43:54I have never heard of a champion
43:56being treated with such disrespect.
43:59And I'm just glad that he's in the right hands right now.
44:01Golden boy.
44:02And that he's getting his just due
44:04for these hard title fights,
44:06because this is hard work, believe it or not.
44:08And I asked him, I said,
44:09because of your experience,
44:11because you were cheated out of so much money,
44:13do you fight with anger?
44:15He said, no, I don't fight with anger.
44:18Because I want to prove to myself
44:20I'm the best fighter in the world.
44:22But I do feel a certain joy
44:24to be out of that situation.
44:27And I don't blame him.
44:28I mean, you can't get those fights back.
44:30You can't get that money back.
44:31And thankfully, they're suing,
44:33and hopefully there's a resolution now
44:35to get this young man some of the money
44:37that he should have earned
44:38when he was making those title defenses.
44:4026 years old, and Selmo Moreno,
44:43a 10-year pro.
44:46As we head into these final rounds.
44:48Oh, beautiful left hand by Moreno.
44:52But De La Mora just fights right off of him.
44:56Moreno is 7-0 in 12-round fights.
44:59Not surprisingly.
45:00And he's comfortable in 12-round fights.
45:03He gets stronger, and we saw that against Darcinia.
45:06And of course, De La Mora has done so little offensively
45:08that there's not much to impede him.
45:12And it's been since 2002
45:13that this young man has tasted defeat.
45:16And you know how old he was then?
45:1716 years old, fighting professional.
45:21Time.
45:27And our Felix De Jesus
45:30will listen in on the Anselmo Moreno corner.
45:35And this one, folks, is over.
45:38Looks like David De La Mora
45:41has had enough.
45:44And Anselmo Moreno
45:46will retain his WBA
45:49Bantamweight title.
45:53De La Mora.
45:57Now 24-2, and the king has his crown.
46:03Anselmo Moreno improves his record to 33-1-1
46:09with his 12th KO.
46:12Yeah, and it was pretty much a shutout.
46:14I mean, Pernell Whitaker-Light, once again,
46:17the guy didn't get hit with no big shots.
46:19He's still fresh, and like I said,
46:21he's gonna be a nightmare for any one of those champions.
46:25As we take a look at the final show stats.
46:29Now, impressive numbers for Moreno.
46:32Are they ever, you know,
46:33landing at a 52% rate totally?
46:38I mean, that's crazy.
46:3952% rate totally?
46:42I mean, that's astonishing.
46:44That's an amazing number for him.
46:48So let's go back and take a look at the two knockdowns,
46:52round two and round six.
46:54They both were body shots by Anselmo Moreno.
46:58And, you know, as we said at the beginning,
47:00it was De La Mora that wanted to do the body work.
47:02He didn't.
47:03Actually, the right hook to the head
47:05is what caused the first knockdown,
47:07momentarily here.
47:09And Moreno shows us good power.
47:15Here's the right hook to the head.
47:16That created the first knockdown.
47:18And then Antonio, in round six,
47:21he would come back and show some body work.
47:23Yeah, he went to the head.
47:25He went to the body.
47:26The guy was accurate all night long.
47:28Those are good crisp shots downstairs.
47:30Debilitating shots.
47:32I mean, he showed everything tonight.
47:33His defense, his lucidness.
47:35You know, and he's not running.
47:36It's not like he's bouncing around the ring.
47:38He's standing right in front of the guys
47:39and daring them to hit him.
47:42And he will be in more exciting fights
47:44when there's someone in front of him
47:46on a level that strong punches back and earn him.
47:48You're exactly right.
47:49Correct?
47:50And that's what we want to see.
47:51See him fight back from adversity.
47:54So I wanted to make sure I was right about that.
47:55You're absolutely right, Al.
48:00Ladies and gentlemen, we have a time of 10 seconds
48:02into round number nine.
48:04A referee in charge, Luis Pabon,
48:07stops the contest in recognizing the fighter's request.
48:11He is the winner by way of technical knockout
48:14and still the WBA band and weight
48:18super champion of the world, Anselmo Chemito Moreno.
48:28All right, let's go inside the ring
48:30where our Jim Gray is standing by with the champion.
48:33All right, thank you very much, Gus.
48:35Anselmo, congratulations to you
48:37on your victory here this evening.
48:39Felix De Jesus will interpret for us.
48:42Ask him if he felt that this was total domination
48:46and why he was so successful.
49:03Yeah, what he's saying is actually
49:05the work that they put into Panama was great.
49:08And he knew he was going to win this fight
49:10because of the work they did and their team did in Panama.
49:13Did you feel as though if you went to the body repeatedly
49:16like you started in the second round
49:18when you knocked him down,
49:19that that would effectively end the fight?
49:33Yeah, he knew that with the body shots
49:35he was going to win this fight,
49:36but he was working slowly because he says the guy has 2 hands
49:39and any time it could become dangerous.
49:41Yeah, he knew that he was going to, with the body shots,
49:43he was going to win this fight, but he was working slowly
49:44because he says the guy has two hands,
49:46and any time he could become dangerous.
49:48Do you want to go up in weight now,
49:50depending on if Mares wins or up in weight
49:53to go fight Donair?
50:28He's actually saying that it's up to his rep, Sam,
50:30to see which fight is better for him, if it's Donair,
50:32and he also wants to see Martínez against Julio César Chávez,
50:35which I guess is represented by Sam, too.
50:37Will he stay and watch the Mares fight now?
50:39¿Te queda ahora para ver la pelea de Mares?
50:41Sí, sí, me quedo viendo.
50:42Ojalá que también en un futuro quisieran pelear conmigo.
50:45He's definitely going to stay here,
50:47and he wants to, in the future, for these two guys to fight him.
50:49Are these guys moving up in weight to try and avoid him,
50:51does he feel?
50:52¿Tú crees que están subiendo de peso para evitarte a ti?
50:55Eh, no podría decir, no sé, ¿quién sabe?
50:58He says he doesn't know, he can't say.
51:01Congratulations to you, thank you very much.
51:03Muchas gracias.
51:04All right, Gus, back to you.
51:07And thank you very much, Jim.
51:08Okay, let's take a look at how the judges scored this fight.
51:15At the time of the stoppage,
51:17you see the judges' scorecards, and so tonight, so far,
51:21no controversy in Texas, because that clearly is the way
51:24this fight should be scored,
51:25and all three judges had it by a large margin.
51:28And the Showtime unofficial scorecard.
51:32Chuck Tiappa, of course,
51:35as we saw during the course of this fight,
51:36had it by a large margin.
51:37And it was a large margin as well for Anselmo Moreno.
51:41All right, we're ready for our main event,
51:42Abner Mares against Eric Morel.
51:45The challenge facing Mares tonight.
