Israeli ship raid condemned by world powers

Israeli police have conducted interviews on Tuesday with international activists arrested aboard Turkish-backed aid ships which were travelling to Gaza, that left nine people dead and sparked international outcry.

At least nine pro-Palestinian activists, some of which were Turkish, were killed when Israeli commandos stormed the ships in international water over the weekend.

On Sunday the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss Israel's storming of the flottila, resulting in all members calling for a thorough investigation.

The Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu said: "This is tantamount to banditry and piracy. It is murder conducted by a state". Most of the dead victims were Turkish.

Israel is now under pressure from world leaders over its blockade of 1.5 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip after the condemnation from allies. It is also expected to answer questions over why its commanders miscalculated the situation and why the Israeli marines felt the need to open fire to defend themselves.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has cancelled a meeting with Barack Obama and will meet later with his cabinet in Jerusalem.
