Wyclef Jean speaks out over death threats

Hip hop star and political hopeful Wyclef Jean has moved to a more secure location after facing death threats.

The 40-year-old singer-songwriter said the situation would not deter him from running for President in his native country.

"We know that the situation that we have embarked in, you know, death threats comes with the territory, but beyond that, it's not about all the negative information you're receiving," he said.

Jean is yet to be finalised as a Presidential candidate, but insists he has met all the legal requirements, and will continue to be active in politics even if his candidacy is denied.

He is widely popular in his impoverished Caribbean homeland, which is struggling to recover from a devastating earthquake in January that killed up to 300,000 people and wrecked much of the coastal capital Port-au-Prince.

Jean has rebuffed criticisms that he lacks the experience and qualifications to be president, arguing that Haiti needs an international figure who can attract aid and allies.
