Chanteuse, storyteller, lover, traveller. Sam Buckingham has begun to push the singer/songwriter boundaries to deliver an exciting new banquet of sweet pop musings and catchy folk hooks. So far, 2011 has seen her tour nationally in her fans living rooms and backyards, lullaby punters in the bars & streets of London, Paris and Berlin, captivate audiences at the Tamworth Country Music and National Folk Festivals and wow some serious Oz music fans whilst touring alongside musical counterpart Megan Washington.
All this has followed a tumultuous 6 years cutting her teeth in Sydney's underground scene, learning the ropes and where she might fit in, in the noise of todays bulging folk/pop scene. Compared to the likes of Joan Baez, Jewel and Feist, Buckingham has never managed to find a pigeonhole that completely fits, preferring instead to take each song on it's own merits and do what she wants with it, no matter what sound she may end up with in the end.
Each of her three independent offerings, Daydreamer (LP 2005), My Own Horse (EP 2008), Gravity (EP 2009) saw Buckingham embark on national tours, gain the ever coveted national airplay on Triple j and countless community radio stations and tour alongside artists as renowned and diverse as Lior, Angus & Julia Stone, Jordie Lane and iOTA. She's also been finalist in the International Songwriting Competition & Music Oz Awards three years running and has been praised for her songwriting by the likes of Kasey Chambers, Bic Runga and Tim Freedman.
6 years of independent releases, national tours and the strange beauty of life has seen Buckingham hone her skills to become one of Australia's most assured emerging folk stars, in the studio and on the stage. This eye-opening handful of music soaked years has given Sam the voice of a thousand strong and sure angels and a prolific ability to write songs that not only hit you right in the heart but also manage to spin for hours in your head. Introducing mandolin, omnichord, singalong treats and what is surely becoming her trademark ability to somehow make each listener feel like they know her intimately, Buckingham's live show has become a truly captivating experience.
"Buckingham filled the stage with her presence alone, a feat that even the most accomplished solo artists still struggle with" Shout Out Music
Now, Buckingham is about to embark on her fourth independent release. Written over 2 years at home, on the road and in tiny apartments of Barcelona and Paris, she describes the songs for her second full length offering to be her most real, mature and adventurous songs to date. "I wrote about 50 songs for the album over a couple of years and have slowly whittled the number back down to about 12. I delve a lot into this obsessive need i've had to travel the world and stay mobile versus my desire for a settled, peaceful life and the constant battle we all seem to have with all these things we want that completely contradict each other. And then there's love.. heartache.. the usual -- but I think with age you start looking at things differently and these new songs really reflect that change."
