ELLA HOOPER

Industrious Melbourne songstress Ella Hooper has announced the release of her first-ever solo project, releasing her new single, Low High on November 9, alongside an austere yet playful clip, produced by notable photographer, Wilk.

Low High was produced and recorded by Jan Skubizewski (Owl Eyes, Illy, Way Of The Eagle) in his Collingwood studio and features a guest performance by horror-country act, Graveyard Train who Ella says, "were the perfect foil for the shanty-chain gang vibe of the song."

The lyrical songwriting behind Low High deals with the struggle to keep a mental and emotional balance, "to not succumb to the inertia and pressure of the blues that strike us all from time to time," Ella explains. It has rhythms inspired by Harry Belafonte records and chain gang field recordings. "The percussion line that is the crux of the song came about by me hitting a whisky bottle with a stick, banging an empty drum case and clanking two bits of wood together, as I wanted a non rock beat to sing over," enlightens Ella, "the song just seemed to spill out after that... The vocals for the track were recorded in one take, as I wanted to leave some imperfections in on this record. There are places where my voice cracks, which I find very liberating and much prefer the sound of."

The single's resourceful cinematic, clip was filmed in Strathbogie (north east Victoria) in a remote pine forest and produced in black and white by renowned photographer, Wilk (Jack Ladder, Bertie Blackman, Dappled Cities, Seeker Lover Keeper). The clip nods to film noir, slight of hand and horror movies of old, artistically telling the story behind Ella's expressive songwriting. "I wanted to show a vacant, almost hypnotized heroine being taken over, insidiously, and also lifted up by unseen forces (manic depression). My daggy dancing is meant to be a little robotic and disconnected, as I know people in this state are often just going through the motions, faking the party," explains Ella.

Happily excited and proud of this release, it marks Ella's first solo effort since making a name for herself as lead vocalist in iconic Australian pop punk band, Killing Heidi and alt-country act, The Verses. Ella exclaims, "This is the first time I've backed myself sans band and sans label to say what I want to say, in my own musical and visual language."

Low High and the full album In Tongues is another musical departure for Ella, revealing a deeper, softer vocal style set to songs about loss of control, inner desires and Saturn returning, explaining, "It's important to me to keep making music that feels relevant to my current state and place in life, which means it must evolve, sometimes dramatically, but isn't that true to life?"

Stay tuned for Ella's debut solo album, In Tongues set for release in early 2013.
