00:00Nigeria Inspector General of Police, IGP Kar Yode Egbetokan on Tuesday visited Plateau State over the series of attacks that occurred on Sunday night in Vasa local government area of the state, which, according to the police, scores of residents were killed, this, as unofficial reports have indicated that more than 51 people were killed, with some of them burned to death at Zike community by the attackers.
00:25According to a news statement signed and made available a few minutes ago by the force public relations officer, Olumiwa Adajabi, the IGP while in Plateau State on Tuesday, reviewed the security strategies and made deployments to the troubled spots.
00:42In line with the press rallies, the police said that, following a series of tragic incidents that occurred in Vasa local government area of Plateau State, resulting in the death of scores of residents,
00:54the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kar Yode Adayolu Egbetokan, has visited the state, accompanied by senior officers including the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the police mobile force,
01:09AIG Funcho Adegboye, AIG Zone 4, AIG Zachariah Ferrer, and Commandant Police Staff College Joss, AIG Inwanyi Polycarpameka.
01:20Upon his arrival in Plateau State, the IGP visited the state government house, where he commiserated with the state governor, His Excellency Caleb Mutfwang and the good people of Plateau State.
01:32During his discussion with Governor Mutfwang, the IGP condemned the attacks and reassured His Excellency that the Nigeria police force would carry its best efforts to douse the rising tensions and bring the perpetrators of these heinous acts to justice.
01:46The IGP also seized the opportunity to hold a brief meeting with tactical commanders to review strategies employed in the deployment of police operational personnel and operational assets provided to further augment the available security emplacement in the state.
02:03The Inspector General of Police has further directed the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Department of Operations, Dib Kwajidali Yakubu, to take charge and oversee the operations aimed at restoring peace and serenity to Plateau State.
02:18The Nigeria police force once again reaffirms its commitment to the good people of Plateau State and Nigeria as a whole.
02:26The force remains resolute towards bringing the perpetrators of these attacks to justice and restoring peace to the affected communities, the police statement ends in quote.
02:36It was gathered that more than 51 people were killed and many others injured in the brutal attacks on the Zike Kimikpa community in Kual district of Arigway Chiefdom, Bas a local government area of Plateau State in the late hours on Sunday.
02:51It was also gathered that some homes were razed down by the gunmen.
02:55Residents said the gunmen attacked the community and started shooting sporadically on Sunday night.
03:00Meanwhile, Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and the candidate of Labour Party in the last concluded presidential elections in Nigeria,
03:10narrated his experience after he visited Plateau State to pay condolences in a similar incident that occurred at Bokos area of the state before the Zike community attacks.
03:20He said,
03:21Yesterday, I traveled from Abuja to Joss, Plateau State, to condole with and show solidarity with Governor Caleb Mutfwang and the people of Plateau State over the recent senseless killings in the Bokos area of the state.
03:35From the state capital, I traveled to Bokos and spent time with the victims, the displaced children and others.
03:42What has happened in these communities is very saddening and utterly unacceptable.
03:46Nigerians should not be killed or forced to flee their homes when we are not at war.
03:52Every life is precious, and no Nigerian, regardless of where they live should have to live in fear or uncertainty.
04:01My deepest condolences go to the families and communities who have suffered tragic losses.
04:06No words can truly capture the pain and devastation that such senseless violence brings.
04:11My heart is with the people of Bokos, the displaced children, women, and entire communities, during this difficult time.
04:20Earlier, the Obedian movement had built a borehole to provide clean water for the IDP camp and the community,
04:28and we continued the support yesterday with the sum of 7.5 million naira to help in providing facilities for the displaced children,
04:36provide continuous education and ongoing needs of those affected.
04:39Now, more than ever, leadership and compassion are essential.
04:44I stand in solidarity with Plateau State and remain committed to supporting all efforts toward peace, justice, and healing.
04:53May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace, and may the people find strength, comfort, and unity as they rebuild their lives.
05:01In another post on Monday, Peter Obi said that, ordinarily, I would not have commented on this issue,
05:08as I have endured far worse situations in my political life since I declared for the presidency,
05:14and it continues to worsen as I strive to do things in a civilized and organized manner.
05:20The unfolding events demand that I have to start speaking out now.
05:23On what transpired today during my planned visit to Banu State,
05:28I am not entirely sure that the state governor, my dear younger brother, a reverend father I deeply respect,
05:35is aware of this situation.
05:37Having exhausted every possible means to reach him,
05:40I am compelled to use this available platform to ensure my message is conveyed.
05:44On Thursday, the 10th of April, I had planned to visit Plateau and Banu State, respectively.
05:52Plateau on Sunday, the 13th of April 2025, and Banu on Monday, the 14th of April 2025.
06:00My trip included paying courtesy calls to the governors as well as visiting the IDP camps and schools of nursing in both states to give my support.
06:09As is my practice, I reached out to the Plateau State Government to inform them of my visit,
06:16which included spending the day with the victims at the IDP camp in Bokos,
06:20a visit I wholeheartedly embraced to extend my support, care, and compassion to fellow Nigerians in need.
06:28And in his utmost hospitality, the Plateau State Governor graciously permitted.
06:32In a similar vein, I tried repeatedly to contact the Banu State Governor directly without success.
06:39I then successfully contacted his ADC who told me that the governor was in a very important meeting
06:45and would call me before midnight on the same day.
06:49Unfortunately, I didn't get that call until Sunday evening when he sent me a message stating
06:54he had not been able to reach his principal since the day I called.
06:59I was disturbed by how an ADC would not have been able to reach his principal for three days.
07:05However, because my visit to the governor was just for courtesy and respect,
07:10I decided to proceed with my trip to McCurdy.
07:14Earlier today at 7 a.m., I left Joss, and on reaching a quanger at about 10 a.m.,
07:20my security team stopped and stated they received a press statement,
07:24purportedly from the Banu State Government, that appeared designed to stop my trip.
07:28Curiously while I was still talking with my security team on the issue,
07:34the governor's ADC sent the statement directly to me.
07:37The letter refers exactly to my itinerary which I had earlier conveyed to the ADC directly
07:43and to the security operatives in Banu through my own security.
07:47I am forced to remind them, and all concerned, that the purpose of this journey is to support
07:53good causes in areas of critical development, health and health education, education and
07:58caring for our people in need, and this is what I have done in my private life for years
08:03before getting into politics.
08:06And even while in politics I have continued to do so, everyone knew then how I had to get
08:11permission from the then president, President Goodluck Jonathan, that I needed to visit Haiti
08:17during the earthquake.
08:17I intended to visit a school being built by the bishop in Igboko, a nursing school and
08:23an IDP camp, actions that reflect my genuine care for the welfare of our fellow citizens,
08:29and my continuous show of love, care and compassion to citizens who have been displaced.
08:35May God help us as we rebuild our nation and aim to achieve a new Nigeria where we do not
08:40politicize everything but allow citizens to exist, and we all should live for the common
08:45good for less privileged Nigerians and those in need.
08:49Former Nigeria vice president and the People's Democratic Party, PDP candidate in the last
08:55concluded Nigeria presidential elections, Atiku Abu Bakar said, I am deeply saddened and alarmed
09:01by the resurgence of violent attacks in Plateau State, particularly the recent killings in Zike
09:07community in the Kimikpa area of Kweli District, Basa local government area, where at least 47 innocent
09:14lives were lost on Sunday.
09:16This tragedy, coming just days after a similar attack in Bokos local government area, is a
09:22grim reminder of the worsening state of security in our country.
09:26It is regrettable and entirely unacceptable that these Nigerians had to lose their lives
09:31as a result of the incompetence of the Tanubu-led administration.
09:36The protection of lives and property is the primary responsibility of any government.
09:40Unfortunately, President Tanubu has failed these citizens and continues to fail them.
09:47I also condemn the escalating wave of terrorist attacks in Borno State, which, according to
09:53Governor Babagana Zulam and the Shehu of Borno, Abu Bakar ibn Umar Garbi el-Khanemi, has resulted
09:59in the loss of lives and territory to insurgents.
10:03These disturbing developments underscore the total collapse of the current administration's
10:08security policy and architecture.
10:10Every sincere Nigerian should be disturbed by how terrorists and bandits operate with
10:15impunity, especially in northern Nigeria, which has become the epicenter of this violence.
10:21The continued delay in prosecuting terrorists and bandits, some of whom have been in custody
10:27since 2016, has only emboldened these mass murderers.
10:31If the same level of urgency and energy were devoted to the prosecution of terrorists as
10:36we have seen applied to the trials of political critics, we would have sent a clear and forceful
10:41message that crime has consequences.
10:44Instead, justice is being delayed, and our security forces are being demoralized.
10:50The Attorney General of the Federation must prioritize the prosecution of these criminals, and special
10:56courts should be established to fast-track their trials.
10:59Our justice system must not give the impression that terrorism pays.
11:04I am also alarmed by reports of armed criminal groups crossing our borders to carry out attacks.
11:10This is a national disgrace and further proof of a failed security framework.
11:16Condemnation after the fact is not enough.
11:19What is needed are proactive, preventive actions.
11:22As long as these criminals face no real consequences, they will continue to return to inflict more pain
11:28on innocent people.
11:30I urge the National Assembly to urgently pass legislation that allows state governments to
11:35properly arm and equip their security outfits with modern weapons.
11:39This will strengthen our overall security architecture and help relieve the overstretched
11:44federal security agencies.
11:45At the same time, I must call on community members to reject collaboration with armed groups and
11:52instead support our security forces by sharing intelligence.
11:56Security is a shared responsibility.
11:59I commend the courage and sacrifices of our security forces.
12:03Their efforts remain invaluable, but they need the full support of the people and a government
12:08that prioritizes security, not just with words but with decisive action.
12:14May the souls of the departed rest in peace.
12:16We owe them justice, and we owe Nigeria a safer future, said Atiku Abu Bakar.
12:22Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwoso said,
12:26I am saddened to learn of the attack on the Zike community, Kimikpa, Kual district of Basa
12:32the local government area of Plateau State, which resulted in the death of 51 people and
12:37destruction of several properties.
12:40This sad attack came after over 50 persons were killed within a week in attacks over
12:45five communities in the state.
12:47It is important that Plateau State must not be allowed to become a hotbed of violence and
12:52wanton destruction again after the relative peace it has enjoyed in recent years.
12:57The federal government must rise to its responsibility to ensure that all lives and
13:02properties are protected and the message of peace should be embraced by everyone in
13:06the state and beyond.
13:08I extend my condolences to the government and people of Plateau State.
13:13I also urge the authorities to ensure that justice is served by bringing the perpetrators
13:18of these heinous crimes to book.
13:21Osasua Kano, bringing you the news in a more digital way.
