Al George's Red Pepper Band - Sweet So-and-so

This appears to be a pseudonym of American-born British bandleader Jack Harris. He took over the baton from Ambrose,when the latter left the Embassy Club to go to the Mayfair Hotel, in 1927, for an eight-week engagement and decided to stay on. Harris commenced recording from 1927 till 32 and then again from 1937 till 1940, when he left to go to back to America. His finest bands were in the late 30s when he had a big swing type band,that rivalled Ambrose's band. In the late 20s and early 30s he had a different band,but it was rather good,with a robust confident style of playing. In 1937 he and Ambrose bought Ciro's Club in London's West End. They alternated their own bands every six months and even booked Art Tatum to play at this place. Before long, Harris took full control by buying out Ambrose's share. It later folded in 1939. Harris was notorious for his ferocious temper, and on several occasions he actually fought with his musicians. He cut down salaries,would not allow other session work. He was extremely demanding and reportedly, he had no close friends. Anyhow he was an outstanding musician and this great recording is one of his early sides, waxed in 1928.
