FROM SWEENEYS BAR ON DAME STREET
PRESENTED BY TOM MILLETT

Pelicans' foundations were laid in June 2011 when David Bridgeman and Mark Sheridan met each other in Connemara. They were attending the same Gaeltacht. David and Mark clicked instantly as both were big into music and both were members of bands. David was lead singer of indie band 'The Claritons' whilst Mark was the bassist of progressive rock band 'Giant Land-Squid'. A little while after returning to Dublin, 'The Claritons' broke up. David got in contact with his good friend Eric Fitzgerald, who at the time was bassist for Alt Rock band 'The Lockout'. Eric had expressed previously that he was not happy as a bass player, but wished to be a lead guitarist. David then contacted Mark, who had said that he was going to leave 'Giant Land-Squid' due to conflicting ideas. The three had a test session together in David's shed, and ended up writing a song that day. They just clicked with each other. After a month of working on acoustic pieces together, the group decided that they needed a drummer to go electric. John Phelan, who was a friend of David's from school, asked David if he could 'try out' for the band. David was completely unaware that John Played drums, so he invited him down. After playing with John, the three knew they had a lucky find so he joined the band. First calling themselves 'The Boxing Social', they changed their name to 'Pelicans' soon after a recording session with RTÉ's Frank McNamara. They are currently writing songs and being generally beastly in Mount Prospect, Clontarf.
