One of the most eagerly-awaited events of the theatrical year, the musical ‘I Can’t Sing’, has opened in London.
Inspired by the smash hit TV phenomenon ‘The X Factor’, it lampoons the judges and the show including its producer, Simon Cowell, who also co-produced the musical.
According to the show’s director, however, Cowell didn’t try to impose himself on the stage production.
“He’s been incredibly hands off. I mean, right from the beginning, I think he was very smart, he said, ‘You’ve just got to do what you want to do, otherwise I’m going to look like the puppet master and you’re going to look like idiots, because you’ll be doing what Simon says’. So he just said, ‘Do what you think is right’ and he’s actually been completely true to his word,” said Sean Foley.
Asked about the the secret to a hit show, successful musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber had this comment: “Do you know, there’s a wonderful line that was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, ‘Fools give you reasons, wise men never try.’ The answer is: I haven’t a clue.”
Reactions were mostly positive among the stars who were invited to see the premiere.
“I thought it was fantastic. I’m going to come back again and again. It’s funny, it’s brilliant and it’s got the X Factor,” said X Factor judge and talent manager Louis Walsh.
“I think it is so funny. We never stopped laughing. It’s got wonderful songs. It’s a great variety show,” said actor Christopher Biggins.
The musical was co-written by British comedian Harry Hill.
“(I was) thrilled. It’s never gone better. The cast were fantastic and it sounded great too. It was a brilliant audience reaction,” he said.
The musical’s opening comes at a tumultuous time on the London scene – the Spice Girls’ show ‘Viva Forever!’ was axed after just six months and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Stephen Ward’ only ran for three months.
