Jelly Roll Morton & His Red Hot Peppers recorded The Chant at the Webster Hotel In Chicago September 15, 1926. The Chant was composed by Mel Stitzel of the Melrose Music Company of Chicago. Stitzel and Morton both composed and arranged at Melrose Music and Morton played many of his own compositions as well as Stitzel's arrangements. Stitzel apparently did well at Melrose, even though Morton was by far the better and more prolific of the two, but Morton, being black, was defrauded out of a large sum of royalties by Melrose.
