Desperate search for survivors continues after two buildings collapse in India

A woman emerges from the rubble of the building which toppled to the ground in Chennai on Saturday. She was one of the lucky ones, as more than 100 are still feared trapped, and at least nine were killed when the building under construction collapsed after heavy rain.

The Indian rescue services are continuing the desperate search for survivors, around 26 had been rescued so far.

One official said it would be two days before they could reach the ground floor. Many of the construction workers were said to be in the basement collecting their paycheques when the 12-storey building crumbled.

Police have detained two of the construction company’s directors as part of the inquiry into the incident. Many blame lax safety standards and poor quality materials for the accident.

On the same day a second building collapsed in New Delhi, killing ten people.

Several similar incidents across India have killed around 100 people in the past year, highlighting the need for closer monitoring of the construction industry.
