Brooklyn subway shooting: Will Groomes says he wanted to make citizen’s arrest of Gilbert Drogheo

The retired correctional officer who shot a 32-year-old man dead in New York’s Borough Park subway station following a scuffle has told investigators that he was trying to make a citizen’s arrest.

The incident began when retired correctional officer Willie Groomes stepped between Joscelyn Evering and Gilbert Drogheo on a crowded Brooklyn-bound No. 4 train on Tuesday evening.

The two co-workers began to hurl insults at Groomes. Evering then allegedly shoved the 69-year-old, causing him to experience back and shoulder pains. The elderly man, who was carrying a 9-millimeter handgun, then followed the pair through the station.

After climbing the stairs, Groomes hit Drogheo and the two wrestled for the gun, during which Groomes fired a shot that hit Drogheo in the chest. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

A source told CBS New York that Groomes was only trying to make a citizen’s arrest and did not intend to use deadly force against Drogheo.
