Q & A - What to look for when hiring a Wedding Photographer - Style & Approach
So when you’re looking to hire a wedding photographer I think there are 4 important ingredients you need to consider. The first is the style and the approach of the photographer, every photographer is going to have a different eye and different way of seeing a wedding and seeing the world and capturing that on film so it’s important that you look through their website, look through their portfolios, and get a feeling for what their style is and whether you gravitate to that style. When you look at a website you should really like the photos you are seeing and want to look at more and you should be able to look at multiple different weddings and see consistent style that’s there and make sure that style is attractive to you.
Some photographers are going to have a more posed approach where almost every photo they’re going to want to pose it and put your body in a certain position, other photographers are going to want just totally candid pictures where they’re not going to give you any suggestions or guidance and they just want candid shots and some photographers like a more stylized it’s almost like a fashion shoot in every photo.
For me, I like to have a blend of more candid or kind of photojournalist documentary style where I’m giving you some gentle posing and some gentle direction but ultimately what I want is for your personalities to come through and be evident in the photos. I don’t want it to be overly posed where it gets stale but I also don’t just leave you hanging and don’t give you any direction at all so the goal for me is to have candid pictures that show a natural emotion and kind of the chemistry that is there between the couple.
One thing to consider as well when you’re looking at photographers and you’re looking at their websites is you want to be able to see a large variety of weddings. Anyone can get one or two great photos throughout a day or one or two great photos in a weddings but you want to see from start to finish there’s great photos throughout the day as the lighting changes as the scene changes and you want to see that consistently over a lot weddings, I think that’s very important.
