My Approach to Wedding Photography
When you’re meeting with potential Wedding Photographers to photograph your wedding, I think it’s important to ask them what is their approach to wedding photography; how do they go about doing their job and getting the photos that they want to get and the reason I think this is important is that their approach has to suit your personality.
Some photographers are very outgoing and like to be the star of the show at a wedding. They will literally burst through the doors and announce the photographer is here and they throughout the day will be vocal, quite assertive, and loud and have quite a strong footprint throughout the day and this is the way that they go about doing their job and getting the photos that they want to get. That’s not to say that this is a good approach or bad approach, it’s just has to suit your personality.
Other photographers like to take a more of a fly-on-the-wall approach and this is the way that I like to photograph weddings. I take more of a fly-on-the-wall approach like a photojournalist would at an important event. I like to move around discreetly and take pictures of candid moments when guests and family and friends are interacting and laughing and I want to take those photos without them even really knowing that I’m there or taking their photo and for me this is important because it is the way that I feel that you can capture the real emotion that is happening at the wedding.
This isn’t say that I am not assertive or take charge at times because there’s times in the wedding when the photographer needs to be more assertive, needs to offer some direction and some guidance and I’m certainly happy to do this at the appropriate times. For the majority of the day I like to take a photojournalism, photojournalistic approach and to be more of a fly on the wall who is moving around discreetly, not leaving much of a footprint, allowing the day to unfold naturally as it is and just capturing the great moments of intimacy and laughter that are happening and that are defining and telling the story of the wedding day.
