A Jalandhar based punjabi boy named Anand (Kishore Kumar) moves to Delhi. He is having a hard time in finding a place to live in. He gets shunned by many landlords as they want to give their place to the people of their own caste. Out of desperation| Anand disguises himself as a Tamilian fellow named as Anandkumar Swami and get to live with a Tamilian family. He meet Janki (Vyjayanthimala)| daughter of his landlord and falls in love with him. But he was unable to tell her the truth about his identity. When he tried to convince their parents for marriage| their parents turned against them. Due to all this Janki tries to kill herself| but a shopkeeper saves her and brought her up as his Punjabi niece named Mohini. Everyone including Anand considered her dead. Considering Mohini as a good punjabi girl Anand's family fixes his marriage with her. What will happen when everyone gets to know the truth of Janki and Mohini? Will Anand and Janki unite?
