Peru: Indigenous Communities Negatively Affected by Oil Extraction

Oil extraction in the Peruvian Amazon region is taking its toll on local indigenous communities. In the Loreto region, Block 192 has proven oil reserves worth US$7 billion and accounts for 20% of national crude production. But the water supply of local communities has been contaminated and residents have high lead and cadmium levels in their blood. For the first time ever they are dying of cancer. teleSUR
