A police dog named Rex who faithfully served New Mexico’s Albuquerque Police Department for years faces an uncertain future.

After faithfully serving New Mexico’s Albuquerque Police Department for many years, a police dog named Rex is retiring.

Once he is no longer officially affiliated with the force, Rex may be euthanized.

Though K-9 handlers sometimes adopt the dogs they worked and bonded with, Rex’s handler has a small child at home and is therefore unable to do so.

Specially trained dogs such as those used by police and the military can be difficult to introduce into domestic situations, particularly those involving kids.

Since announcing their possible plans for Rex, the Albuquerque Police have gotten a number of offers to keep the dog from being put down.
